Former Minister of Finance/Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Monday dismissed the well-respected legal luminary, Femi Falana, as “a tool of corrupt elements” whose interests were hurt by her anti-corruption fight while she was in office. In a press statement signed by her media adviser, Paul Nwabuikwu, she described what she called Falana’s “malicious attempt” to mix her up in the $2.1 billion arms scandal of the National Security Adviser (NSA) in his letter to the International Criminal Court (ICC) as “a desperate joke by an integrity challenged charlatan”. Describing herself as “a strong transparency advocate and anti-corruption fighter,” Okonjo-Iweala diagnosed Falana’s ailment as Chronic Cerebral Amnesia (CCA) because, according to her, he has no grasp of the facts. “This misadventure shows that the so-called learned lawyer does not have any idea of what the mandate of the ICC is about,” she said, speculating that Falana resorted to the action because his previous efforts to tarnish her name failed because they were lacking in credibility. She named those efforts to have been “through his discredited NGO, SERAP and petitions to the EFCC”. Of the “corrupt elements” of which she accused Falana of being a tool, she said they have made a habit of making false allegations against her whenever she receives any national or international recognition for her work. “The pattern is clear and Nigerians should be alert to it,” she said, adding that she will neither be intimidated from going on with her life and performing her duties, nor will she “give in to cowardly and unmanly bullying”. She cited four elements she claimed to be “the facts,” to demonstrate her innocence, including her mother being kidnapped while she was in office because of her offensive against corruption. “Falana’s attempt to implicate Dr Okonjo-Iweala falsely is a disservice to law, justice and the image of the country,” she concluded. “It is sad that a person who had earned some prominence as a human rights lawyer now tramples on the human rights of others as a political jobber.” Text of the statement: OKONJO-IWEALA: A STRONG TRANSPARENCY ADVOCATE AND ANTI-CORRUPTION FIGHTER A RESPONSE TO FEMI FALANA, AN INTEGRITY-CHALLENGED CHARLATAN (ICC) The malicious attempt by Lagos Lawyer, Femi Falana to mix Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala up in issues that have nothing to do with her in his letter to the International Criminal Court (ICC) is a desperate joke by an integrity challenged charlatan (ICC). This misadventure shows that the so-called learned lawyer does not have any idea of what the mandate of the ICC is about. He has resorted to this action because his previous efforts to tarnish her name - through his discredited NGO, SERAP and petitions to the EFCC – failed because they were lacking in credibility. This latest effort to try to attach her name falsely confirms that Femi Falana is nothing but a tool of corrupt elements whose interests were hurt by the work Dr. Okonjo-Iweala did in fighting corruption while she was in office. These elements have now made a habit of making false allegations against Dr Okonjo-Iweala whenever she receives any national or international recognition for her work. The pattern is clear and Nigerians should be alert to it. But Dr Okonjo-Iweala will not be intimidated from going on with her life and performing her duties. She will not give in to cowardly and unmanly bullying. Falana’s latest attempt to implicate Dr Okonjo-Iweala falsely suggests that he is suffering from an ailment that may be described as Chronic Cerebral Amnesia (CCA) because he simply has no grasp of the facts. Here are the facts: FACT NO 1: OKONJO-IWEALA HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE $2.1 BILLION ARMS CONTROVERSY Contrary to Falana’s lies, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has absolutely nothing to do with the alleged misuse of $2.1billion by the office of the former National Security Adviser. Falana and his sponsors are simply trying to invent a connection where there is none. The January 20, 2015 memo in which Dr Okonjo-Iweala sought and received the approval of former President Jonathan for the release of part of the newly returned Abacha funds to the NSA for purchase of arms is totally separate from the $2.1 billion issue. The memo which is now in the public domain speaks for itself. The release of the resources was in response to an approval by the former President following a meeting chaired by him after a committee had considered the request. The memo clearly documented Dr Okonjo-Iweala’s insistence that the proper procedure be followed, subject to appropriation and according to financial regulations. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala went further to state that the former NSA should account for the funds to the former President since she is not a member of the Security Council. The attempt to link Okonjo-Iweala to the $2.1billion issue is therefore dead on arrival. FACT NO 2: OKONJO-IWEALA WAS NOT IN GOVERNMENT WHEN MOST OF THE ABACHA FUNDS WERE RECOVERED Falana and his sponsors have claimed that billions of dollars of Abacha funds were recovered and that Dr Okonjo-Iweala should account for the recovered funds. The fact is that some of the funds recovery was done under the regime of General Abdulsalami Abubakar and the first term of President Olusegun Obasanjo when Dr Okonjo-Iweala was not even in government. During the time Dr Okonjo-Iweala was Finance Minister in the second Obasanjo administration, $500m was recovered. As documented by the Field Study conducted by the World Bank with the assistance of national and international NGOs, this amount was properly applied. Falana’s insistence on the contrary shows how despicable he is and how he is ready to ignore facts and concoct a fiction in the service of his sponsors. FACT 3: OKONJO-IWEALA LEFT STRONG LEGACIES AS A CHAMPION OF TRANSPARENCY AND THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION WHILE IN GOVERNMENT It is on record that Dr. Okonjo-Iweala championed transparency and vigorously fought corruption during her two terms as Minister. Among other actions, starting from the second Obasanjo administration, she, for the first time in Nigeria’s history, published monthly revenue allocations to all tiers of government for Nigerians to see. While serving in the Obasanjo administration, she requested the assistance of the World Bank and DFID, the UK’s development agency to build institutions and systems that could block leakages from the treasury. This work stalled after she left office in 2006. In August 2011 when she returned under the Jonathan government, with the assistance of the Ministry of Finance Team, she re-invigorated the establishment and use of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Management Systems (IPPIS), the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMIS) and the Treasury Single Account (TSA), all of which saved the country billions of naira by drastically reducing avenues for corruption in the public service. These facts are well documented in successive World Bank, DFID and IMF Article 4 Reports. It is gratifying that the present government has adopted and is further building on these systems for the benefit of the country. FACT NO 4: DR. OKONJO-IWEALA’S MOTHER WAS KIDNAPPED AND ALMOST KILLED BECAUSE OF THE FORMER MINISTER’S STANCE AGAINST CORRUPTION Falana is callous beyond belief for ignoring a fact of recent Nigerian history: the kidnap of Professor Kamene Okonjo, the then 83 year old mother of Dr Okonjo-Iweala by agents of fuel subsidy fraudsters who were angry that the former Minister had blocked them from defrauding the country further. The kidnappers had told the traumatised old woman that they were sent to punish Okonjo-Iweala for refusing to pay some oil marketers. It is on record with the State Security Services that the kidnappers initially demanded the resignation of Dr Okonjo-Iweala in return for the release of her mother. Thank God Professor Okonjo is still alive to tell her story today and she will not be silenced. It is extremely insensitive and, in fact, inhumane for Falana and his sponsors to level false accusations against someone like Dr Okonjo-Iweala who went through this kind of searing personal ordeal for her principled fight against corruption. CONCLUSION Falana’s attempt to implicate Dr Okonjo-Iweala falsely is a disservice to law, justice and the image of the country. It is sad that a person who had earned some prominence as a human rights lawyer now tramples on the human rights of others as a political jobber. He and his sponsors are engaged in nothing but media harassment, cyber bullying and intimidation against innocent persons like Dr Okonjo-Iweala for political and pecuniary gain. That is why Nigerians should not give in to Falana’s self-imposed Chronic Cerebral Amnesia (CCA). At the time of writing this essay, Nigeria has lost over 60 of her citizens to the dreaded Lassa Fever which like the equally dreaded Ebola Virus Disease is a haemorrhagic fever that spreads easily from one person to another even at the slightest of contacts. The two diseases need a comprehensive action plan involving the people and relevant agencies, local and international, as led and mobilised by government who deploys all resources necessary, be it human, cash and material, to tackle the menace headlong before it ravages the citizenry. That the disease has claimed over 60 lives already within a short period of time shows how deadly it can be. The Ebola virus which caused a worldwide stir in 2014 and claimed about 11, 000 lives in West Africa alone when the epidemic occurred that year, can be considered to be more fearsome because of the number of casualties it claims per occurrence and its rapid spread to even Europe and the US which also lost some seven citizens together in the outbreak. However, with all its threats and spread; with all its fame for defying medicine, the then government of Presdient Goodluck Ebele Jonathan rose up to the occasion and confronted that monster with total commitment and vigour, mobilising government agencies, personnel and other resources; sensitising schools, offices, churches/mosques etc while equipping hospitals and other public places with anti-Ebola kits and releasing the sum of N200million each to Lagos and Rivers States which had reported cases of the disease then despite the states being led by APC, the then opposition party, the disease could not do much damage to Nigeria contrary to genuine fears and worry expressed by the international community then. Former President Goodluck Jonathan (L) With President Muhammadu Buhari, After A Close Door Meeting At The Presidential Villa In Abuja On Monday (2/11/15). Although outbreak of the disease was Although outbreak of the disease was reported in West Africa, precisely Guinea, in March 2014, it did not give the world much concern until it was brought into Nigeria by a Liberian diplomat, Patrick Sawyer. The moment the Ebola disease found its way into Nigeria, the alarm bell was rung all over the world because of Nigeria’s population and her lack of expertise to handle such an outbreak. However, with President Jonathan’s commitment, drive and patriotic approach to the fight against the disease, Nigeria managed to still eventually lose seven of her dear citizens while Europe lost three and the US lost 4. However, Liberia has lost 4,809, Guinea lost 2,536 and Sierra Leone lost 3,955. Even the World Health Organisation (WHO) commended “…the Nigerian Government’s strong leadership and effective coordination of the response that included the rapid establishment of an Emergency Operations Centre… strong public awareness campaigns, teamed with early engagement of traditional, religious and community leaders, also played a key role in successful containment of this outbreak”, hence, Nigeria was declared Ebola-free on October 20, 2014, exactly just three months after the first reported case. Thereafter, Nigeria had the luxury of even sending health workers to other sister African nations affected by the disease to assist them combat it. Furthermore, the WHO Country Director in Abuja, Dr. Rui Gama Vaz, described Nigeria’s exemplary handling of the outbreak as a “spectacular success story.” It was, indeed, a commendable achievement. In spite of all these achievements and accolades poured on Nigeria then for this rare feat, the All Progressives Congress (APC), the then major opposition party, tried several times to politicise the issue and distract the Jonathan administration from focusing on tackling the disease headlong so they could use it as one of their campaign issues against the then president, an issue which resulted in the PDP and Jonathan chiding the APC on different occasions for politicising what would have been a national disaster on all citizens irrespective of party affiliation, ethnic background or religious leaning but for government efforts. Fast forward to 2016, and with the outbreak of the Lassa Fever which was officially declared by the federal government in January 2016, despite the Minister of Health saying it has been with us for 6 weeks (as at 8th of January, 2016), yet, the Lassa fever has killed 44 Nigerians as at January 18, and distracted by the so-called corruption cases deliberately churned up by the authorities as a decoy to parry the attention of Nigerians from other urgent national matters, Nigerians do not seem to be asking questions as to why the high fatalities within such a short period of time. With the death toll of Lassa fever reaching 44 and the possibility of it climbing higher, one can only thank God that Buhari and his party, APC, were not in power when Nigeria and indeed West Africa suffered the Ebola outbreak. It would have been a monumental disaster. It is sickening, smacks of gross incompetence and a display of high level of crass irresponsibility on the part of our government of the day to be talking about setting up a National Action Committee to tackle the outbreak nearly three weeks after its emergence was officially declared. The Action Committee would be inaugurated at an Emergency National Council on Health meeting. The question is, what is “emergency” about calling a council meeting over a disease that has been allowed to ravage citizens for so long? Why did it have to take the intervention of the Senate via its committee on health for the Buhari administration to be talking of a council meeting to tackle the fever? Why did we have to wait for 44 of our citizens to die before action is being taken? Under Jonathan, Ebola could only spread to three states of Lagos, Enugu and Rivers before it was effectively contained. Why did we have to now wait for this Lassa fever to spread to 10 states before waking up from our slumber? Surely, there is a lax attitude from this government towards the wellbeing of its citizens. It is obvious this government lacks any action plan for its citizens whether in health, employment, economy, education, social welfare, infrastructure etc. When compared to the progress made under the Jonathan administration and the commendations the country received from all over the world with regard to the dogged fight put up against Ebola disease, one would have thought that Nigeria should only improve on that in tackling any disease of similar trait. But with the Lassa fever saga, it has become obvious, and another incontrovertible proof that the “Change” promised Nigerians during the campaigns is nothing but a change for the worse. Lastly, in the interest of the nation and fellow citizens, I will advise the Buhari administration and the APC to eat the humble pie and approach the PDP for advice on how best to tackle this latest disease before it ravages all of us, and as a responsible and patriotic party, I will also strongly advise the PDP not to withhold any information and or resources from APC when they are approached for advice and expertise. This country belongs to all of us and we must see to it that our citizens are defended stoutly against any disease, no matter how deadly! |

Although millions of eight-year-old girls in Nigeria are presently playing or disturbing their mothers for more noodles, there is one particular eight-year-old girl who is now a married woman. I have confirmed that two days ago, a marriage ceremony was conducted between a rather curious couple: the bride is eight years of age and she is in primary four (we are presently still getting more information on the groom but initial reports say he is aged 14 and is in SS1). They are of the Baba Ahmed family in Zaria and this is reportedly not the first of such marriages they have conducted. Sources told that although the marriage has indeed been formalized between the two ‘lovers’, there will be no sexual intercourse until at least they finish their secondary school education. It is unclear if there will be other marital duties such as cooking, living together or going for romantic time outings. We are still getting more updates on the story and will be updating as we get them. The marriage has raised a lot of controversy among Nigerians. Some are totally outraged at the concept of wedding between minors and even say it is unconstitutional as the ‘bride’ is not of age and she did not give her consent while others say there is nothing wrong with it. In the meantime, see exclusive photos from the ceremony below:

Better for them |
I often cannot completely read facebook updates to be candid.Mails and
private msgs?..,I try to read them all.But updates I have noticed, have
switched to a peculiar trend trickling out of network marketing:- free
advice, pple turning to professors overnight and telling others to luv and
imitate their lives, attitude of exposing ur problems thus letting ppl to
mock u contemptuously without providing solutions to them, ppl
confronting the whole world just for a little misunderstanding with the a
close friend or a hault in their relationship with the opposite sex
etc..Disagreement,insult,rancour follow despite the gud
intentions..Argument comes up and the advice mutates into a melt down
drama.
Is it necessary to permit oneself to understand another?..I think it
is..Our 1st reaction to most updates of other ppl is an evaluation or
judgment rather dan understanding. Very rarely do we permit ourselves
to learn and understand accurately what the meaning is.The few updates
I managed to read,I've never observed a positive
result....Meanwhile,some of us are very intelligent and so fluent in
oratory to the extent that ours surpass that of Shakespare/Chinua Achebe
(in litterature),Da Vinci/Michealangelo(in Arts),Isaac Newton/Albert
Einstein(in physics),Washington/Kennedy(in politics),Ancient Athenian
Sophists-Pluto/Socrates(in philosophy)e.t.c...These oratories we
display, very often are self referntial in their content. The bulk of the
words, phrases and sentences are couched in "me,myself, mine,I" thereby
presenting ourselves to be the "only" new Moses or Aaron that hv the
capacity to take the ppl to the promise land wt our updates...However,if
u want another to truly understand u,give all learning styles the chance
to absorb what u hope to convey wt effective communication and
appropriate fixative. As a student of epistemology,I'm learning how to
xperience knowledge, methods of learning new things and ways by which
I can transfer knowledge to others and its validity. Each time I glance in
the mirror,I am reminded to master my ego so that I may be reborn into
my essence;that essence I chose to dedicate pple by mastering their own
understanding and learning styles.
You can master what u do,and to a degree even how u think bt never
how u feel.Feelings ar nat meant to be controlled, they ar meant to be
xperiencd. Then we hv a choice on how we RE-act upon them;whether to
ACT THEM OUT on others or not.Often tyms,we usually cater for our
own dominant learning styles, that's not communication but rather the
xpression of self-dialogue 2wards others. To fully communicate wt
others.................
>Tell me
>Show me
>Help me feel it.
We live in such diverse world dat no advice appear 2be xtremely
stupendous or universal enof to not lead to controversy. We can only live
by xample by facing our failures, mistakes and impediments not by
bossing others wt laws we cannot keep or 2do what we cannot do.Pple
don't usually want advice...sometyms,they just want to find out dat
someone relates to and understands their struggle.
God has given me d chance to become courageous enof to
climb, confident enof to set my goals and certain enof to fly.But also
humble enof to crash weh I think I've found "the way" to do things wtout
Him..I hv made certain mistakes dat I can transparently hope for courage
to slay or share my perceived mistakes and pitfalls, through example, may
lend courage to others to face their own;we walk side by side, and
therefore everyone is my teacher.
I don't hv any update as an advice or answers to pple's problems only
empathy and moral support. After d privilege to participate in various
workshop/conferences organized by Red Cross Society, life has
repeatedly demonstrated that every person has all it takes or the answers
they ever need in them...Everyone knows dat the three biggest struggle is
sharing our past wtout GUILT,living the present wtout HESITATION
and facing the future wtout ANXIETY..As for me,all my attitude hv been
geared towards empowering my purpose becos no events, circumstances
or others have the power to make me happy or unhappy, strong or
weak,ready or unbalanced,humble or timid,contemporary or
superficial, respectful or fearful but myself alone,I chose my day!.........
Yesterday has given me its gifts and tomorrow has not yet arrived to
offer its opportunities...So today alone,I will face with ready hands,a
clear mind and an open heart..As u face urs,I stand next to u,vunerable
and raw..We may fail temporarily, for ultimately there is no failure, but
by failing and falling,we bodly take a step towards our next dream which
happens to be a BIG STEP through our worst fears, hence,we can stand
again inspiring others to do the same.

She is brighter than her future... |
Thinking about this topic, I’ve been wondering who the focus of this post should be – girls or guys or both. In almost every tertiary institution in Nigeria, you find ‘undergraduate couples’ living as husbands and wives. You find a lot of these misguided people in virtually all schools. It’s so bad that, often times, they are duly recognized and acknowledged as couples by lodge neighbors, classmates and even leaders of various students associations. Little wonder there is such an award as “The best couple of the year award” shamelessly and thoughtlessly received by students..Like I said earlier, I really don’t know the particular gender to address but let me just keep typing. The rate at which girls live with their boyfriends in their various off campus hostels is painfully alarming. Most times, these young girls are very beautiful, with bright and promising future. They cohabit with boys who are their fellow students as roommates. The lugubrious part of it is that the silly girl would always introduce the small boy as her fiancé..Our society is really sick courtesy of those that live in it. These girls collect either hostel fees or house rents from unsuspecting (and sometimes, struggling) parents and end up in the house of a boy. You struggled possibly for several years to gain admission. Then you suddenly became a prayer warrior posting and shouting ‘Amen’ at the slighted provocation. You fasted. You had one prayer point filled with promises of your loyalty and devotion to God if only He would answer your prayer. Now that He has fulfilled His part by answering and granting you admission, don’t you think He is expecting you to fulfill your own part, to keep whatever promises you made to Him??. Many of you just got admission and once you settle down (especially from your second year), crazy thoughts will begin to creep into your minds. Yes by then, the heat of the rush would have been over; If God didn’t capture you (possibly through the various campus fellowships), boys would have caught you. In my school we even have an unrecognized, unregistered but well offered course . For d guys its a course that shouldn't be carried over. Soon, they would persuade you to move in with them. Of course, they’d give you one thousand reasons to make you give in to their prodding..Before you agree to move in and live with a boy on campus, consider the reason why you are in school in the first place. What image would you be creating about yourself? Can this boy marry you in case you get pregnant for him as is always the case, or will you resort to series of abortions like many other girls before you? What advice will you give your children in future concerning this kind of things? After school, what next? Will the relationship really lead you anywhere?. This post is finally addressing the female folks. I didn’t plan it that way. Maybe it’s because they are the worst hit by the grave consequences of illicit sexual relationships. They are the ones that turn out to be the sore losers in the end. They call it school life but they don’t realize how idiotic they have been till it’s too late. You are not in school to get married. Part of the reasons why you are in school IS NOT to get the husband-and-wife experience, to see what it feels like for the boy to provide the money for food and for the girl to go to the market for food stuffs and cook. That’s pure misplacement of purpose! One guy told me that he was practically learning how to be a caring and romantic husband. Such shameless! Then you hear the girl say, “We are not doing anything, we are just roommates”. Yet she commits countless abortions before graduation..Yes, your admission has given you unlimited freedom. Yes, your parents are not there to tell you what to do or what not to do. There is even no blood relation around, so there's no fear of someone reporting you. But what about giving your womanhood respect and protecting your dignity? What about living in such a way as to have a positive story to tell the next generation (including your children) without your conscience pricking you? What Goes Around Will Definitely Come Around.... Y not exercise a moment of thorough thinking....#gbagam |
