Politics / UPDATED: Gunmen Attack Abuja Community, Abduct Residents by lovetterrison(m): 7:53pm On Sep 10, 2020 |
Gunmen raided Tungan Maje, a suburb of Abuja, early Thursday, abducting an unspecified number of residents, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt. One resident said at least 20 people were kidnapped after prolonged shooting in the community that lies near Zuba. This figure could not be immediately confirmed. The police spokesperson for the federal capital territory, Anjugur Manzah, told PREMIUM TIMES he was working on a statement on the incident. He did not confirm the number of those kidnapped, or whether there re casualties. A resident of the area who would not be named for security reasons said heavy shooting started in the community at about 12.15a.m. and lasted more than an hour. He said members of the local vigilante group were overwhelmed. “We didn’t sleep throughout the night. It’s this morning that the vigilantes told us about 20 people were abducted,” he said. The attack is coming weeks after reports suggested that members of the extremist group, Boko Haram, had infiltrated the federal capital. Police have confirmed the attack, saying 10 people were kidnapped and five rescued. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/413592-updated-gunmen-attack-abuja-community-abduct-residents.html |

Foreign Affairs / US Orders Closure Of Chinese Consulate In Houston by lovetterrison(m): 4:11pm On Jul 22, 2020 |
Hong Kong (CNN)The United States government has abruptly ordered China to "cease all operations and events" at its consulate in Houston, Texas, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, in what it called an "unprecedented escalation" in recent actions taken by Washington. US State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said the consulate was directed to close "in order to protect American intellectual property and Americans' private information" but did not immediately provide additional details of what prompted the closure. Relations between China and the United States have plummeted in the past year, amid an ongoing trade war, the coronavirus pandemic, and US criticism of China's human rights abuses in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. A spokesperson for the State Department said in a separate statement that China "has engaged for years in massive illegal spying and influence operations" and that those "activities have increased markedly in scale and scope over the past few years." Late Tuesday evening, police in Houston said they responded to reports of smoke in the courtyard outside the consulate, located on Montrose Boulevard, in the city's Midtown area. Local media shared video of what appeared to be officials inside the compound burning documents. In a statement posted on its official social media, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the order to close the consulate was a "political provocation unilaterally launched by the US side, which seriously violates international law, basic norms governing international relations and the bilateral consular agreement between China and the US." The Chinese Foreign Ministry condemned the decision and urged the United States to withdraw it. The statement goes on to say the US has been "shifting the blame to China with stigmatization and unwarranted attacks against China's social system, harassing Chinese diplomatic and consular staff in the US, intimidating and interrogating Chinese students and confiscating their personal electrical devices, even detaining them without cause." https://edition.cnn.com/2020/07/22/politics/china-us-houston-consulate-intl-hnk/index.html It added "China is committed to the principle of non-interference. Infiltration and interference is never in the genes and tradition of China's foreign policy." US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is currently in Europe, where he has been rallying leaders on the continent to take a harder line with Beijing, and meeting with exiled dissidents. Pompeo declined to offer further details about the ordered closure when asked Wednesday. Pompeo said US officials had set "our clear expectations for how the Chinese Communist Party is going to behave." "And when they don't, we're going to take actions that protect the American people, protect our security, our national security, and also protect our economy and jobs," he said. Ortagus's statement earlier Wednesday said, "The United States will not tolerate the PRC's (People Republic of China) violations of our sovereignty and intimidation of our people, just as we have not tolerated the PRC's unfair trade practices, theft of American jobs, and other egregious behavior. President Trump insists on fairness and reciprocity in US-China relations," Ortagus said in the statement. Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, the acting chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, wrote on Twitter Wednesday that closing China's consulate in Houston "needed to happen," and claimed it is a "central node of the Communist Party's vast network of spies." Sen. Angus King, an independent of Maine who caucuses with Democrats, told CNN's John Berman on "New Day" Wednesday he was not aware of any "recent intelligence of particular Chinese activities, either with regard to our elections, or the whole confrontation between our two countries -- theft of intellectual property" that may have driven the decision. "There certainly is a good reason to confront China. My concern is, escalating this tension, is it really about confronting China, or does it have something to do with an election in four months?" King, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said. On Twitter, Hu Xijin, editor of the state-backed tabloid Global Times with strong ties to China's Communist Party, said that Beijing had been given 72 hours to close the consulate. "This is a crazy move," he added. According to a statement on its website, the Houston consulate covers eight southern US states, including Texas and Florida, as well as Puerto Rico. It was the "was the first (consulate) to be established" in 1979 after the US and China established diplomatic relations, though a liaison office was already operating in Washington, DC, at that time. On Tuesday, US prosecutors charged two alleged Chinese hackers over a "sweeping global computer intrusion campaign" that they say was supported by the country's government and aimed at coronavirus treatment and vaccine research. The indictment also marks the first time that the US has accused the hackers of working on behalf of the Chinese government.

Politics / Non-chinese Citizens Who Criticise Beijing Anywhere On The Planet Could Be Arres by lovetterrison(m): 12:12pm On Jul 04, 2020 |
Non-Chinese citizens who criticise Beijing anywhere on the planet could be arrested if they enter Hong Kong Hong Kong (CNN)A year ago, Chinese-Australian dissident artist Badiucao was searching for a place in Hong Kong to display some of his political works, many of which are critical of the Chinese Communist Party. Now he says he wouldn't even transfer through Hong Kong airport for fear of being arrested under the city's new national security law. That's because the legislation, which came into effect late Tuesday, doesn't only clamp down on freedoms at home. It also puts foreign citizens who criticize the Chinese government anywhere in the world at risk of jail if they even set foot in the city -- even if they are just transiting through the airport. "It's really concerning and terrifying, not just for residents in Hong Kong but anyone who cares about human rights in Hong Kong and human rights in China, in general," said Badiucao from his home in Melbourne, Australia. For decades -- first under British colonial rule and then after its handover to China -- Hong Kong has offered legal protection from the mainland Communist Party. Chinese dissents, Western academics and global non-governmental organizations used Hong Kong as a safe space to meet, organize and criticize Beijing, mostly without consequence. Whether it can continue to serve that function is now in doubt. "There are crimes covered by this law which are purely about speech and so there is a chance that your speech outside of the country will then expose you to risk should you enter the jurisdictions," said Jeremy Daum, senior fellow at the Yale Law Paul Tsai Center. "Hong Kong used to be a safe space. It's no longer a safe space." Section 38 On Wednesday, Hong Kong's top official, Chief Executive Carrie Lam, defended the new law, describing it as a "crucial step to ending chaos and violence that has occurred over the past few months" in the city. The legislation was introduced by the central Chinese government in response to pro-democracy demonstrations that rocked Hong kong last year. Beijing saw the protests as a direct challenge to the ruling Communist Party, and blamed them on "foreign forces." The law introduces four new crimes: secession, subversion, terrorist activities and collusion with a foreign country, which carry maximum sentences of life in prison. Its primarily focus is on stopping local dissent. Yet section 38 has caught the eye of legal experts globally. "This law shall apply to offenses under this law committed against the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region from outside the region by a person who is not a permanent resident of the region," is the unofficial translation of section 38 by state-run news agency Xinhua. Hong Kong protest leader flees as government warns calls for 'revolution' are now illegal Hong Kong protest leader flees as government warns calls for 'revolution' are now illegal In short, even people who are not Chinese citizens and live outside of Hong Kong can fall foul of the new legislation. Mainland China has a similar law, section 8 of the criminal code, but it can only apply if the crime is punishable in both China and the foreign country -- which means speaking out against the Communist Party likely would not be covered. But section 38 of the Hong Kong national security law has no such exception. The act committed abroad only has to be considered a crime in Hong Kong. The law isn't retroactive, which means that anything said or done before July 1, 2020, won't be taken into account. But for artists like Badiucao, who has no intention of stopping criticizing governments in his work, or displaying previous art that was political, the law could apply as soon as he sets foot inside Hong Kong -- even though he is now an Australian citizen. Dissidents aren't the only people who are worried, either, as Western academics could be rethinking their travel to Hong Kong. Maggie Lewis, an expert in contemporary Chinese law at Seton Hall University, said she would now consider the risk differently every time she traveled the city. "If you aren't thinking through what you did outside Hong Kong before you enter Hong Kong, I don't think you're going through the necessary thought process to be careful," she said. Marco Rubio, a US Republican senator and frequent critic of China, went a step further on Wednesday, warning US citizens against traveling to the city. "Anyone American who now travels to #HongKong for business or pleasure is out of their minds," he posted on Twitter. 1 Like

Please regarding the documentation I have worked as an employee in a Chinese firm for 5 years (thou fluent in Mandarin) and posses most of the criteria i have read on the forum that the embassy requested for : Tax Clearance Cert. Pension Statement Letter of Employment Salary Account ,payslips and others. In Addition, aside my regular 8-5 job there is a company that I'm an existing shareholder and as the same time the only director stated on the company's CAC. *should i use salary account statement when applying for me and my wife or the company that appoints me as its director's bank statement will be preferable what are the odds? *secondly My wife is a 400 level student and haven't secured a job yet,I will be the one funding our trip to brasil and hope it wont affect our application because most required documentation bear my name. *Thirdly when submitting should both of us appear at the embassy and what are the documentation for married couples . *when called upon for interview, will the embassy interview both of us? God bless thanks for ur response in advance |
