Politics / 'racist' Apple Tells African Kids To Leave by lovetterrison(m): 3:59pm On Nov 12, 2015
Apple has apologized to six black students who were asked to leave an Apple Store in Australia because they "might steal something."
The students told Australian media they were checking out the new iPhone 6S at the Apple Store at Highpoint shopping center in Melbourne on Tuesday when they were asked to leave.

A short video recording of the incident shows a man who appears to be an Apple staffer telling the Maribyrnong College students that store security guards were concerned they might shoplift something.
"These guys [the security guards] are just a bit worried about your presence in our store," the staffer tells students. "They're just worried you might steal something."
The students protest, asking why they were being singled out, but are interrupted by the Apple staffer.
"End of discussion, I need to ask you to leave our store," he tells the young men, who are wearing their school uniforms.
The video caused an uproar on social media, with many users accusing Apple of racism.
"I've been coming to [this mall] for a long time and I never thought something like this would happen ... of course I was offended," Mabior Ater, one of the students, told Fairfax Media.
Australian media outlets reported that after a chat with their school principal, the boys returned to the Apple store on Wednesday and received an apology from an Apple Store manager.
An Apple spokesperson acknowledged to CNN that an apology has been made, but refused to comment further.
While nearly 30% of Australia's population was born overseas, immigration remains a contentious political issue. In recent years, human rights groups have accused the nation of shirking its international obligations with regard to asylum seekers.

Politics / Re: Fresh Crisis In Senate As APC Senators Vow To Stop Ekweremadu From Presiding by lovetterrison(m): 1:00pm On Nov 12, 2015
erunz:
Some All Progressives Congress (APC) senators yesterday staged a walkout from the chamber in protest of the ascension of Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to the platform to preside over the plenary in the absence of Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

Saraki had gone to the Presidential Villa to attend the swearing in of new ministers by President Muhammadu Buhari and consequently asked Ekweremadu to preside over the plenary.

However, the arrival of Ekweremadu into the chamber to preside over the session, irritated some APC senators who said they would not sit and watch a member of the minority Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) preside over the APC majority-controlled chamber.

They accused Saraki of handing over the Senate to Ekweremadu who preside over the plenary for the first time since June 9 when himself and Saraki were elected as the presiding officers of the Senate.

The aggrieved senators who walked out of the chamber vowed not to attend any plenary session presided over by Ekweremadu. The development quickly got to
Saraki in the Villa and consequently, he hastened down to take over from Ekweremadu, a situation that never occurred when Ekweremadu was Senator David Mark’s deputy.

In the days of Mark as senate president, he never returned to the chamber to take over from Ekweremadu even when he returned to the Senate before the end of plenary. Instead, Mark would go straight to his office to enable Ekweremadu preside all through. But Saraki was compelled to return to the chamber to take over the plenary to avoid brewing crisis.

APC senators who walked out on Wednesday included the Chief Whip, Senators Sola Adeyeye, Abu Ibrahim, Oluremi Tinubu, Suleiman Kunkuyi, among others. Notwithstanding, the plenary continued as many other APC senators, including the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, his deputy, Bala Ibn Na’Allah; Kabiru Gaya , Binta Masi Garba, Shehu Sani among others remained in the chamber while Ekweremadu presided.

After the plenary, Hunkuyi (Kaduna North), issued a statement, vowing that APC senators would reject any further attempt to allow a member of the minority party preside over their sittings.

The statement read: “In equal stance, we notice with grave sadness, the handover of the hallowed chamber of the Senate today (yesterday) to the opposition party, the PDP, by the Senate President to Ike Ekweremadu as the PDP helmsman to preside over the majority membership of the APC-led chamber.

“It is a very sad development that must be denounced by all well meaning APC members and leaders alike. With this, to show our protest as APC senators of the eight Senate, we wish to announce that we shall seize (sic) to attend any seating (sic) presided over by the PDP in an APC majority chamber of the eight Senate.”
Another APC senator who did not want to be named, told journalists that his colleagues would resist the next attempt by Ekweremadu to preside over the plenary by massively boycotting the session.

The bad blood generated by the development prompted Saraki to call the senators into a closed-door session after the plenary. The session lasted for one and half hour.

However, the Senate in an official reaction to the development last night, dismissed the allegation of conspiracy to hand over the Senate to PDP.

A statement by Senate’s spokesman, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, described the alleged conspiracy as nothing but the figment of imagination of those who made the claim.
He urged Nigerians to disregard the allegation, saying the Senate remained committed “to providing robust legislative actions to support the change agenda of the President Muhammadu Buhari government, adding: the “Bi-partisan stand of the Senate has not and will not be an impediment.”

But a PDP senator, Sam Anyanwu (Imo East), dismissed the action of APC senators as a mere waste of time, saying there is nothing the APC senators can do to stop Ekweremadu from presiding whenever Saraki is not around.

Politics / In A Deft Move, Buhari Gives Key Portfolios To Southern Nigeria by lovetterrison(m): 11:20am On Nov 12, 2015
In a country gripped by ethno-political balancing, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday moved to narrow the fault line that divides the North and the South by assigning most of the key portfolios of his administration to Nigerians of southern origin.

The president also made good his promise to rationalise the public sector by slashing the number of ministries from 29 to 24.
Since he assumed office on May 29, Buhari has been widely criticised for appointing mostly northerners to non-ministerial but key positions in government.

Prior to the inauguration of the cabinet, Nigerians of northern extraction accounted for almost 80 per cent of the president’s appointments, relative to 20 per cent allotted to southerners.

But yesterday, any concerns that may have arisen over Buhari’s choice of government functionaries to drive home his plan for socio-economic prosperity was laid to rest with the appointment of Babatude Fashola (Lagos) as Minister of Power, Works and Housing; Adebayo Shittu (Oyo) as Minister of Communications; Isaac Adewole Folorunsho (Osun) as Minister of Health; Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti) as Minister of Solid Minerals; and Kemi Adeosun (Ogun) as Minister of Finance, representing the South-west geopolitical zone.

From the South-south zone, those with key appointments included Udoma Udo Udoma (Akwa Ibom) as Minister of Budget and National Planning; Chibuike Amaechi (Rivers) as Minister of Transportation; Ibe Kachikwu (Delta) as Minister of State for Petroleum Resources; and Usani Usani Uguru (Cross River) as Minister of Niger Delta.

The South-east produced Okey Enelamah (Abia) as Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment, and Geoffrey Oyeama (Enugu) as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

However, a closer review showed that the North still got other key positions such as Audu Ogbeh from Benue State in North-central Nigeria, who will man the crucial Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry, Ms. Amina Mohammed from Gombe in the North-east will superintend over the Environment Ministry, while Alhaji Adamu Adamu from Bauchi in the North-east with oversee the Education Ministry.

More significantly, the areas of law enforcement and security was left entirely in the hands of Abdulrahman Dambazzau (Minister of Interior) from Kano in the North-west, Mosur Dan-Ali (Minister of Defence) from Zamfara in the North-west, and Abubakar Malami (Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice) from Kebbi, also in the North-west.

Buhari kept to his word by keeping the portfolio of Minister of Petroleum Resources, where he will be assisted by Kachikwu who still doubles as the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Other ministers who were assigned their portfolios after their swearing-in yesterday included: Abubakar Bawa Bwari (Niger) who was made Minister of State for Solid Minerals; Mohammed Musa Bello (Adamawa) - Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); Senator Aisha Alhassan (Taraba) - Minister of Women Affairs; Lai Mohammed (Kwara) - Minister of Information and Culture; Chief Ogbonaya Onu (Ebonyi) - Minister of Science and Technology; and Mrs. Zainab Shamshuna Ahmed (Kaduna) - Minister of State, Budget and National Planning.

Others were: Prof. Anthony Gozie Anwuka (Imo) who was announced Minister of State for Education; Mr. James Ocholi (Kogi) - Minister of State for Labour and Employment; Senator Chris Ngige (Anambra) – Minister of Labour and Employment; Senator Heineken Lokpobiri (Bayelsa) – Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development; Mustapha Shehuri (Borno) – Minister of State for Power; Prof. Claudius Daramola (Ondo) – Minister of State for Niger Delta; Khadija Bukar Abba Ibrahim (Yobe) – Minister of State for Foreign Affairs; Ms. Aisha Abubakar (Sokoto) – Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Investment; Ibrahim Usman Jibril (Nasarawa) – Minister of State for Environment; and Osagie Ehanire (Edo) – Minister of State for Health.

Others that were assigned portfolios were: Solomon Dalong (Plateau) – Minister of Youth and Sports; Suleiman Adamu (Jigawa) – Minister of Water Resources; and Senator Hadi Sirika (Katsina) – Minister of State for Aviation.

Speaking after the swearing-in of the cabinet, the president asked the ministers to justify the confidence he and the nation had reposed in them.

The president said he consulted widely before selecting his ministers and allocating portfolios to them, adding that he and his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, had been mindful of the need to constitute a cabinet that would best deliver their expectations of a better country than what they inherited.

He said: “We want to work towards a prosperous nation respected for the right reasons, and whose citizens can hold up their heads anywhere in the world.”

The president also expressed optimism that bringing the current batch of ministers to serve the country was a step in the right direction, describing it as "a timely move towards realising their goals for our country”.

The president said since he assumed office in May, he had been mindful of the need to ensure that the appointment of new ministers translated into putting round pegs in round holes while showing sensitivity to the nation’s diversity.

“I have also been conscious of the need not to repeat such mistakes of the past where the right people were allocated the wrong portfolios, which translated into their performing poorly to our collective detriment despite their obvious capabilities.

“Also, I have responded to the counsel to consult as widely as possible, given the need to build a stable and all-inclusive government by reaching across our various ethnic and political divides,” he said.

He noted that with the inauguration of ministers, his government would continue more decisively to implement its policies in respect of the economy and in other areas.

“While working hard to maximise revenue from oil in the face of a sharp decline in the price for the commodity, we are determined to diversify the economy in agriculture to enhance employment and explore solid minerals as a major revenue earner,” he added.

According to him, the primary aim is to achieve self-sufficiency in the production of staple foods such as rice and wheat and to become a major consumer and exporter of both items as well as solid minerals.

He promised that his government would pursue policies that would generate massive employment for millions of youths, and reiterated his determination and focus to ensure improved security for the country and its citizens, and without letting up in the government’s fight against corruption.

“Our commitment to defeat Boko Haram and all the threats it constitutes remains as strong as ever. So is our resolve to root out vices such as kidnapping and neutralise the various forms of criminalities that threaten the social peace of Nigerians,” he said and expressed the view that in the moral sphere, trust was slowly but steadily being re-established between the government and the people.

“Now, when the government speaks, the people listen; and when the people’s expectations are not met, they appreciate that it is not for lack of commitment or trying on the part of government. In effect, government business is now being conducted with transparency and cynicism is waning as a result,” he added.

Buhari said the adoption of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) had resulted in the blocking of leakages in the public sector, making more funds available for the business of governance and ensuring the welfare of citizens.

He added that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had also assisted more than 30 states with concessionary loans to offset the salary arrears of their workers.

“On the monetary side, the CBN has also implemented country-specific and innovative policies that have helped to stabilise the exchange rate and conserve our reserves.”

He urged the ministers to proceed to work speedily and do their utmost to justify the confidence placed in them not only by their conduct but also by their performance in their various positions, adding that the economy is poised for sustained job creation, poverty reduction and inclusive growth.

Politics / OLX Steps Up Security To Address E-commerce Fraud by lovetterrison(m): 2:36pm On Nov 05, 2015
OLX, the biggest online classified platform that connects buyers and sellers, said it has taken further steps in addressing online fraud in Nigeria's emerging e-Commerce business.

Country Manager for OLX, Mrs. Lola Masha, who stated this at a security forum jointly organised by OLX and Mobile Monday in Lagos recently, said the decision became necessary, in order to protect every customer doing legitimate business on the e-Commerce space.

OLX partnered Mobile Monday Nigeria (MoMo), a global community of mobile industry developers, designers and influential individuals who facilitate cross-border business cooperation and development in a security conference, themed “Making E-commerce More Secure in Nigeria”.

According to Masha, some of the security steps taken, included having a business alliance with Credit Registry Services, which is a Credit Bureau that has data and statistics of financial customers; strengthening security requirements on product verification before uploading the products online; and the collaboration with the Nigerian Police on security matters.

The need to partner Credit Registry Services, is to depend on its statics and data of customers on the website of credit bureau, in order to information on the financial behavioural pattern of customers on Credit Registry Services, that may also be substantial customer to OLX. The need for Nigeria to have a single harmonised database system, where information of people could be sourced, becomes absolutely necessary in monitoring the behaviour patterns of customers who trade on the OLX platform, Masha said.

The need to step up security measures on every online transaction, using the OLX platform, was informed by the increasing rate of online fraud in the e-Commece space, where people's credit and debit cards are cloned and used for online transactions without the knowledge of the card holder.

According to Masha, “the partnership with MoMo is to further enhance OLX commitment to keeping the site safe and secure for its users.”

She added that “working closely with the Nigeria Police Force, OLX has been able to apprehend two scammers on the site showing our dedication to keeping OLX users safe and ensuring that every user experiences a smooth transaction on the site.”

Other speakers at the forum, include the Manager, Strategy and Alliances, Interswitch, Ope Adeoye, CEO/CTO INITS Limited, Femi Taiwo; and MD/CEO, CR Services, Jameelah Ayedun.

Speaking on the need for collaboration, Ayedun said the e-Commerce space in Nigeria is fast growing and would need proper protection of genuine users of the all e-Commerce platforms, through the use of data. She said CR Services saw the huge need for data collection in Nigeria, hence it established its presence and would be ready to collaborate with every organisation that depend largely on data. She described the e-Commerce space in Nigeria as a new vista for online retailers and that OLX is championing the way by empowering OLX users to conduct more accountable business transactions.

“We are delighted to partner with OLX towards providing a safe and secure way through which more people can transact business online," Ayedun said.
The Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Charles Okafor stated that “the Nigerian Police Force is actively working with OLX to ensure online offenders (scammers) are caught and brought to justice”. He also commended OLX on their dedication to keeping their site safe for Nigerian citizens.

OLX is the world’s leading classifieds platform in growth markets and is available in more than 40 countries and over 50 languages. OLX connects local people to buy, sell or exchange used goods and services by making it fast and easy for anyone to post an ad through the mobile app. Every month, hundreds of millions of people in local markets around the world use OLX’s online marketplace to find and sell a wide range of products, including vehicles, electronics, phones and much more.

EU Ambassador and Head of EU delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Michel Arrion

Says no hidden economic agenda against Nigeria
Earmarks €6.5bn trade development grant

Crusoe Osagie

The European Union on Tuesday stated that many of Nigeria’s policies in operation contradict the basic rules of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) trade operations in the sub-region.

The EU Ambassador and Head of EU delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Michel Arrion, made the statement while announcing the fourth EU-Nigeria Business Forum with the theme: ‘Unlocking Opportunities for Diversification.’ The EU envoy, while explaining Nigeria’s disregard for ECOWAS rules, noted that in January 2015, a new Common External Tariff (CET) was enforced by ECOWAS giving 14 months for member states to comply, but stressed that in Nigeria, it is still business as usual in clear disregard for agreements and conventions of the sub-regional umbrella body.

Arrion who stressed the importance of the EU-Nigeria business forum which will hold in Lagos from November 5 to 7 for participants from both the pubic and private sectors, however noted that the EU has no offensive agenda of hidden conspiracy against Nigeria and other countries in the region.

He stressed that all the EU and its mission in Nigeria and West Africa was interested in was the advancement of the sub-region as well as the enhancement of the competitiveness of its various economic segments.

“Nigeria is maintaining import bans against ECOWAS. You can do this outside ECOWAS but not within. You are part of the same community and bound by some rules relating to free movement of goods and people. We have no offensive agenda for Nigeria because we believe that Nigeria and ECOWAS are very important places where European or other non-European businesses could invest because there is enough room for investment,” he said.

Arrion assured Nigeria that the EU would not invade the West African market with products that could compete with domestic products of what Nigeria and other countries in the region would be producing, pointing out that the EU has removed all its export subsidies to the West African market.

He added that the forthcoming forum would together about business leaders and policy makers from the European Union and Nigeria to discuss business opportunities and impediments to investments.

“The forum will aim to increase domestic and foreign investments particularly in agribusiness, in line with Nigeria government’s diversification efforts,” he added.
Meanwhile, Arrion also stated that a €6.5 billion for every four years till 2035 has been agreed upon by the EU to provide financial trade related development assistance for Nigeria’s growth and development.

He explained that the move was to demonstrate the Union’s strong belief and confidence in the Nigerian market.

According to him, the EU will be making strong commitments in terms of financial development assistance and the “EU with its member states have all agreed to provide a minimum of €6.5 billion of trade development assistance every five years till 2035. Every five years, we are committed to giving grants, development assistance. EU and the 28 member states have agreed to give a minimum of €6.5 billion for every five years. In the last five years it was €8.5 billion. We are very comfortable to provide this development assistance.”

He further stated that since 2012, the EU-Nigeria business forum, a collaborative effort of the EU and its member states in Nigeria, has served as a platform for private sector participants to gather essential market information, identify business opportunities and connect with key players.

He added that the volume of trade between Nigeria and EU stood at €36.4 in 2013, accounting for 29.6 per cent of Nigeria’s total trade the same year, pointing out that the forum will deepen understanding of the role that the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) can play in supporting the diversification of Nigeria’s economy, strengthen EU-Nigeria business relations through identification of opportunities in agribusiness and forging partnerships.

He said EU will be making strong commitments in terms of financial development assistance, saying that the EU and its member states have all agreed to provide a minimum of €6.5 billion of trade development assistance every five years till 2035.

“Every five years, we are committed to give grants, development assistance. EU and the 28 member states have agreed to give a minimum of €6.5 billion for every five years. In the last five years it was €8.5 billion. We are very comfortable to provide this development assistance,” he said.

Politics / AU Accuses Buhari Of Setting A Bad Example For Africa’s Ruling Class by lovetterrison(m): 2:24pm On Oct 22, 2015
Senior figures within the African Union (AU) have accused the Nigerian president of failing to adhere to “the values and practices” of his fellow African leaders.

A statement released this morning criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for “tarnishing the image of Africa’s ruling class by actively promoting accountability and transparency in Nigeria.” The statement also described Buhari’s decision to publicly declare his assets- personal savings of $150 000, 5 homes and 2 mud houses, an orchard and ranch with 270 head of cattle, 25 sheep, 5 horses and a variety of birds- as “shameful modest” and “an unacceptable behaviour” from an African leader.

The statement which was signed by a number of long serving African leaders said Buhari’s behaviour is alienating the prominent members of Africa’s ruling class such Equatorial Guinea’s Nguema Mbasogo and Angola’s dos Santos- who are known to live lavish lifestyles with luxury properties in Europe and the US, private jets and a fleet of luxury cars.

The statement also reiterated the AU’s commitment to “stand up for Africa’s ruling class.”

“If people like Buhari are allowed to have their way, African leaders will soon be forced to fly economy instead of owning private jets. We just can’t allow that to happen,” the statement said.

Politics / Chinese Billionaire Takes 6,400 Staff On Holiday To Paris And Cote D'azur - And by lovetterrison(m): 3:30pm On May 10, 2015
A Chinese billionaire has taken 6,400 of his staff on a four day holiday to France which finished with a world-record breaking human chain in the Cote D'Azur.
Tiens Group Company Chairman Li Jinyuan booked up 140 hotels in Paris where the group visited the Louvre and various cultural sites in one of the world's most famous and revered cities.
The huge group of tourists then made their way to the glamorous Cote D'Azur, where Li Jinyuan booked 4,760 rooms in 79 four-and five-star hotels in Cannes and Monaco.

It took 147 buses to take the tourists from their hotels to the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, where Guinness World Record officials where on hand to validate the world's biggest ever human chain.
The 6,400 employees arranged themselves to spell out the phrase 'Tiens' dream is Nice in the Cote d'Azur', to celebrate 20 years of partnership between the Chinese company and the French region.
France is expected to be 33million Euros better off thanks to the all-expenses-paid staff trip.

The group were expected to spend 13million in Paris, home of the Eiffel Tower, the Arc De Triomph and The Louvre.
Nice was expected to be 20million better off thanks to the visit - and many of the guests stayed in hotels Cannes, where the famous film festival is to be held next week, and Monaco, long known for being a playground of the rich and famous.
Li Jinyuan, 57, is listed as a billionaire on the Forbes rich list and took more than half of his staff to the region to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the founding of the company.

According to the company, he founded the company in 1995 international conglomerate with businesses in biotechnology, health management, e-commerce, hotel and tourism among others.
France, which is struggling to revive its economy, is the most visited country in the world, according to the latest UN figures, and is seeing an increasing number of tourists from China.
Almost 85 million foreigners a year support a 150billion Euro industry that delivers seven per cent of the nation's GDP, according to government figures.
In 2013, the vast majority of visitors to France were from other European countries, but about 3.1 million came from the United States and 1.7 million from China.

Yola Airport has been attacked by insurgents few times. What you are seeing is a bold attempt at keeping the airport functional. Please understand that it is not a normal situation out there.
thank you for the info.

Police are investigating the shooting death of a man who was killed by a woman he met on Craigslist who accused him of damaging her cervix during intercourse.

Authorities say Jessica Lewis, 34 met Marteese Williams, 25 on the classified ad site Craigslist for a casual encounter. According to reports, immediately after Lewis began complaining of extreme pain in her cervical area and sought medical attention.

Retrieved text messages and emails show that Lewis informed Williams that his large penis had damaged her cervix and may have prevented her from having children. She also demanded that he pay her medical bills. When Williams refused, investigators say she drove over to his home and shot him three times wounding him fatally.

Neighbors described Williams as a nice man who had just recently moved into the community.

"He was always friendly and smiling, and often would help me bring in my groceries" Verna Walker, 58 who lived two houses down from Williams told WSBN during an interview. "I was washing dishes when I heard the gunshots, I couldn't believe it was happening in our neighborhood and when I heard who I was equally shocked."

Lewis is currently being charged with first degree murder and being held without bail.
