Nigerians are expected to pay higher electricity tariff from July 2020, the Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, insisted on Tuesday. Mamman disclosed this in his presentation at an investigative public hearing on: “Power Sector Recovery Plan and the Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic” organized by the Senate Committee on Power, in Abuja. The Minister noted the controversial increase would have taken effect in April 2020 but was postponed till July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and widespread “apathy” towards the increase by Nigerians. Mamman said: “The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has also affected our laid out plan for the repositioning of the electricity market towards financial sustainability under the Power Sector Recovery Programme (PSRP). “Initially, the Regulator, following the completion of public consultation on tariff review, planned on conducting a tariff review in April 2020. “However, due to COVID-19 and customer apathy, the proposed tariff review was delayed by 3 months. “The impact of this means the subsidy being incurred in maintaining the current tariff level had to be maintained till July 2020 when the proposed tariff review will be implemented.” He noted the challenge of the nation’s power sector is facing in the development and expansion of our transmission line is “budget and release of FG’s commitment in the estimated sum of N32billion primarily for Right of Way acquisition and environmental impact mitigation. The fund should be provided for in the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Appropriation of the Ministry of Power.” He added that the power sector is also grappling with the challenge of infrastructural misalignment, market inefficiency/transparency, sector governance/policy coordination, increase energy access and completion of legacy projects. https://thenationonlineng.net/nigerians-to-pay-more-for-electricity-in-july-fg-insists/ |
The Lagos State Government has stopped the reopening of worship centers initially scheduled for Friday, June 19 (mosques) and Sunday, June 21 (churches). Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the decision at a press briefing on Tuesday. According to him, the development became necessary as a result of the rising cases of COVID-19 in the state. On Monday, Nigeria recorded 573 new coronavirus infections, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 16,658. Of the new infections, Lagos reported the highest figures with 216 new cases, bringing the total number of cases in the state 7,319. Consequently, the state has remained the epicentre of infections in the country, closely followed by the FCT with 1,264 and Kano state with 1,158. To curb further spread of the virus, the Federal Government had in March, imposed a lockdown on the three majorly affected states at the time (Lagos, Ogun State and the FCT). Subsequently, other states began to impose varying degrees of curfews and governors eventually agreed on interstate lockdowns as they began to record new infections. But weeks after the federal government-imposed lockdown, President Muhammadu Buhari announced again that there would be a gradual easing of the lockdown in order to allow economic activities resume as the country could not sustain an extended period of economic inactivity. While essential workers and other levels of workers have been allowed to resume so far, the government has still appealed to those who can afford to stay at home, to do so. Reducing interpersonal contacts and maintaining social distancing of up to 2-3 meters is said to be one of the ways to curb the spread of the virus but that in itself has proven to be a difficult task for most Nigerians. Other measures to stay safe include sneezing or coughing into your elbow, washing of hands regularly, use of alcohol-based sanitizers and wearing of face masks. While most businesses have been allowed to resume with strict adherence to the above measures, schools, cinemas, clubs and other places of mass social gatherings remain shut. However, on June 1, the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 lifted the ban on religious gatherings in the country. While the PTF had said it does not recommend that people resume at places of worship, it noted that if they have to, they must adhere strictly to the guidelines, some of which include the mandatory use of face masks by worshippers and provision of handwashing spots at the entrances. Also, the use of hand sanitizers with at least sixty per cent alcohol content and mandatory temperature checks was advised. The PTF also mandated that facilities be structured in a way that physical distancing can be observed and as much as possible, congregants avoid activities such a hugging, shaking or kissing. In addition, it noted that church/mosque volunteers (ushers, choir, security etc) that have underlying illnesses should not be allowed to serve, while the time for worship services should not be more than one hour. Following the announcement, states began to lift the ban placed on worship centers. In Lagos State, the governor on June 4, announced that worship centers could reopen but limit the capacity of persons per time to 40%. For larger worship centers, he said the maximum of attendees should be 500 persons per time. The reopening was to commence on June 21 for churches and June 19 for mosques. https://www.channelstv.com/2020/06/16/breaking-lagos-govt-stops-planned-reopening-of-worship-centers/ |
The Presidency on Tuesday said no other government has done more for democracy and freedom of speech than the Muhammadu Buhari administration. In a press release signed by spokesman Garba Shehu, the Presidency said the Buhari administration’s tolerance for divergent views has opened it up to “puerile” attacks. The release was addressed to ‘The Coalition of Northern Groups” which had reportedly disassociated itself from the nation’s “Democracy Day”. “Nigeria recognises Democracy Day because for many decades since independence, the fight for the right for Nigerians to choose their own government in their own name was not complete,” the statement read in part. “A prominent citizen of the country, Chief MKO Abiola died trying to do just this. The statement continued: “Yet when groups such as the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) put out statements claiming that Democracy Day holds no purpose and the government somehow wishes for the northern states to be struggling it is embarrassing not for the government but for the group, its members and their sponsors. “For a start, if the group dared to issue such a comment under non-democratic method they would have met a swift and harsh retribution from a dictatorial government. They should thank their stars that we are operating a truly democratic government where the rights of free speech are guaranteed and protected. The future, it is often said, belongs to the youth. For as many times as he met youth leaders, President Buhari has said to them again and again that we are fixing the ailing state to hand it over to you. It then amounts to a grave mistake, for this group of otherwise promising northern stars to dissociate themselves from Democracy Day and, in effect de-cognizing democracy as a chosen system of government. Nigeria recognises Democracy Day because for many decades since independence, the fight for the right for Nigerians to choose their own government in their own name was not complete. A prominent citizen of the country, Chief MKO Abiola died trying to do just this. When independence was won, and then swiftly replaced by unelected government, it was not much of a change. For the challenges Nigeria faces today, lack of universal suffrage or lack of elected politicians is not one of them. We are facing severe hardships because of the coronavirus pandemic. And we continue to face the challenges posed by the terrorists Boko Haram. Yet when groups such as the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) put out statements claiming that Democracy Day holds no purpose and the government somehow wishes for the northern states to be struggling it is embarrassing not for the government but for the group, its members and their sponsors. For a start, if the group dared to issue such a comment under non-democratic method they would have met a swift and harsh retribution from a dictatorial government. They should thank their stars that we are operating a truly democratic government where the rights of free speech are guaranteed and protected. This government has done more than any other – elected or not elected – to curtail and beat back the terrorists. Similarly, no government has done more to foster democracy and freedom of speech in Nigeria than the current administration. The fact that CNG is freely able to transmit garbage to the media in the hope they will be widely reported is a testament the freedom of expression and media liberty that exists in our country today. Equally, the fact that the government is issuing this statement, in response to the puerile message is a testament that today Nigeria is a country where disagreements can be aired publicly through the press, not through less gentlemanly methods used in the past. We hope that CNG will consider the facts and reconsider the unhelpful and inaccurate message their statements contain when issuing them in the future. https://www.channelstv.com/2020/06/16/no-govt-has-done-more-for-democracy-freedom-of-speech-than-buhari-administration-presidency/ |

France, Germany and Switzerland on Monday allowed travel to resume three months after unprecedented restrictions were imposed in a bid to curb the coronavirus pandemic. France reopened its borders with all EU countries except Spain, where restrictions would remain in place until June 21 in line with a similar decision on the Spanish side. Passengers arriving from Britain would also be asked to self-isolate for 14 days, in line with British restrictions on individuals arriving from France. Borders with non-EU countries remain closed to all but essential travel, except for incoming foreign students who can now head to France. Traffic was reported on a motorway leading to the German-Danish border on Monday, just hours after Copenhagen lifted entry restrictions for German, Norwegian and Icelandic nationals. Germany has however, lifted travel restrictions for most European countries. A policeman said on Twitter that no traffic was reported at other border crossings in the area. He added that a km long queue of cars was reported on the A7 leading up to the Kupfermuehle border crossing, where checks were still being conducted. Germany’s Foreign Ministry removed a warning against travelling to 27 countries in Europe from its website at midnight, ending an unprecedented directive against all foreign travel that had been put in place to stem the virus. Germany is also to stop carrying out border controls, although the checks have already been phased out at many crossings. The travel relaunch is in line with a recommendation by the European Commission, which is urging EU members to reopen borders. The Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) welcomed the lifting of restrictions, saying “the opening of EU borders could act as a second stimulus package for the German economy without costing the state a single cent. https://thenationonlineng.net/travel-resumes-across-europe-amid-hopes-of-economic-recovery/ |

The Presidency has acknowledged concerns expressed by several members of the public regarding a recent incident among the occupants of the State House which escalation led to the arrest of some staff by the police. In a communique on Sunday, presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, assured all and everyone that the President Muhammadu Buhari is not, and was not at any time in any form of danger arising, either from deadly infections or the reported incident by security personnel which he said is currently under investigation. According to Mr Shehu, this particular incident happened outside the main residence of the President. He noted that armed guards and other security personnel assigned to the State House received the necessary training of especially weapons handling and where they come short, their relevant agencies have their rules and regulations to immediately address them. The spokesman further stated that having authorized the proper investigation to be carried out into the unfortunate incident by the Police, the President has acted in compliance with the rule of law. Mr Shehu, however, stressed that it is sad that a minor occurrence is being used by some critics to justify attacks on the government and the person of President Muhammadu Buhari. According to him, in this particular instance, the President says the law should be allowed to take its course. https://www.channelstv.com/2020/06/14/security-incident-in-state-house-buhari-was-not-at-anytime-in-danger-presidency/ |

The University of Ibadan has faulted a claim made by the All Progressives Congress that the institution awarded two certificates with separate dates to Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki. The APC had stated discrepancies in the dates on Obaseki’s UI certificate as one of the reasons for his disqualification from the June 22 governorship primary in Edo State. Presenting its report to the National Working Committee headed by National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, on Saturday, the APC Screening Appeal Committee led by Abubakar Fari, said, “It is inconceivable that the same University will award two certificates with separate dates for the same graduate. “We also find it difficult to vouch for the authenticity of his National Youth Service Corps certificate, there is no indication as to where he served. We find that he should be disqualified.” “It appears you were extremely meticulous to details and you justified ours – not in terms of your findings but in terms of what you were able to amplify. That you have an eye for very important details. “We are happy you were able to finish this work timeously. This is the final appeal level, what is left now is the NWC will meet and take a decision one way or the other,” he said. However, when contacted on Sunday, UI Registrar, Olubunmi Faluyi, restated that Obaseki remains an alumnus of the institution. Faluyi said the institution’s stand remained as contained in an earlier statement that “Obaseki gained admission to the University in 1976 and graduated in 1979 with a Second Class Honours, Lower Division. Records of his Admission and Graduation are intact in the archives of the University.” Also, the varsity’s Director of Public Communications, Olatunji Oladejo, told The PUNCH in a telephone interview on Sunday that the claim by the APC was not true. “We stand by our statement on Obaseki. How can you issue two certificates to a candidate? That is not true. It is not possible. He graduated in 1979 from the university. We issued only one certificate to him, not two,” Oladejo said. https://punchng.com/edo-2020-we-issued-only-one-certificate-to-obaseki-ui/ |
What a beautiful story! May it never ever be well with the evil and looting party that brought this evil Boko Haram into our nation.. These Criminals couldn't do anything for more than a decade and watch Boko haram kill thousand and thousands of innocent Nigerians. That people could not go to their place of worship for over a whole year. Back then, if you see an ordinary polythene bag (nylon of akara) on the floor, everybody start running helter skelter thinking it's gonna be an explosive/BOMB! (It was that bad!) Same evil party that denied Boko Haram kidnapped 286 of our teenage girls before the world stood up to burst their bubble! They rather share the BILLIONS meant to procure ammunition for our soldiers to tackle this Boko Haram insurgency (when it was still at infancy) among themselves and watch our soldiers die!! Only people with chicken brains must have forgotten all these atrocities in less than 6 years. That is why we call them hypocrites and children of hate, perdition and frustration. (They are trying to tell us that this raped, battered and looted nation by their party of looters was like Canada or Dubai pre 2015!) Kidnappings, Daily Pipeline Explosions etc were the order of the day. More of the reason we sent the ineffectual buffon packing. A senseless wailer was telling us here yesterday that before Buhari became President, Borno and Katsina was peaceful, we replied him that before PDP brought Boko Haram to our darling country, the whole Nigeria was peaceful, he kept shut and never responded again. Shameless criminals supportingevil. Our darling country will win this war as a nation, and all the politicians sponsoring these killings along with anyone supporting them will all die miserably and terribly in due season. God bless Nigeria.
. Who did this to you? Imagine how your family members feel about you |
SATANIIST:I have two questions for you. 1. Where APC members today come from? 2. Where are the looted funds? |
brainpulse:. So pastor Eze is now a saith? APC worst thing even happened to Nigeria. |

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Friday assessed his regime as the nation commemorates Democracy Day and returned a verdict that he has recorded “notable achievements.” Buhari made the declaration in his nationwide broadcast to the nation. The President said, “We have recorded notable achievements in the course of implementing our nine priority objectives and are establishing a solid foundation for future success. “On the economic front, our objectives have remained to stabilise the macroeconomy, achieve agricultural and food security, ensure energy sufficiency in power and petroleum products, develop infrastructure, fight corruption and improve governance. “We have witnessed eleven quarters of consecutive GDP growth since exiting recession. The GDP grew from 1.91% in 2018 to 2.27% in 2019 but declined to 1.87% in the first quarter of 2020 as a result of the decline in global economic activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.” https://punchng.com/democracy-day-i-have-recorded-notable-achievements-buhari-boasts/ |
