The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has said that $15.3million, which is part of the money Olalekan Jacob Ponle aka Woodberry stole, was stashed away in a Bitcoin (BTC) wallet. Woodberry was arrested alongside Ramon Olorunwa Abbas aka Hushpuppi and 10 others in Dubai, UAE over cyber-fraud involving 1.9 million victims to the tune of N168 billion. They have all been extradited to the US, where they will face charges of conspiracy to commit fraud. In an affidavit, the FBI noted that Woodberry received the said amount between January and September 2019. Woodberry allegedly staged business email compromise (BEC) schemes targeting accounts through computer intrusion techniques, to carry out unauthorized transfer of funds from victim companies. It resulted in a Chicago-based company losing $2,300,000 while another firm was defrauded into transferring a total of $15,268,000, part of which was stashed away in BTC wallet. “Preliminary blockchain analysis indicates that PONLE received at least 1,494.71506296 bitcoin related to these BEC schemes, valued at approximately $6,599,499.98,” the affidavit read. “These schemes resulted in attempted and actual losses to victim companies in the tens of millions. PONLE directed money mules in the US to open bank accounts in the names of victim companies. “Proceeds from BEC schemes, ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars, were then wired by unwitting employees to the bank accounts opened by PONLE’s mules. “PONLE then instructed the mules to convert the proceeds to Bitcoin and to send the proceeds of the BEC schemes to a bitcoin wallet that he owned and operated.” BTC transactions are recorded in the Bitcoin blockchain, but the identities of the individuals or entities are accounted for on the public ledger, making the platform partially anonymous in nature. https://dailypost.ng/2020/07/06/hushpuppi-15-3m-stolen-by-woodberry-from-us-companies-may-not-be-recovered-fbi-hints/ |
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama, Abuja, on Monday rejected the bid to field an official of Ecobank Plc to as a prosecution witness in the trial of a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and six others. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is prosecuting the defendants on amended 10 counts of fraud, with the ex-SGF being accused of benefiting illegally from the approval of N544m for grass-cutting and simplified irrigation in the North -East region of the country. Others with whom Lawal is being prosecuted by the EFCC are his brother, Hamidu David Lawal; a director of Rholavision Engineering Limited; an employee of the company, Sulaiman Abubakar and the Managing Director of Josmon Technologies Limited, Apeh John. All the defendants had pleaded not guilty to the charges.. Justice Jude Okeke, in a ruling on Monday, upheld the defendants’ objection which they had earlier raised on June 10, 2020 agaisnt the testimony of an Ecobank’s Compliance Officer, Chidi Eboigbe, The judge anchored his decision, disallowing the witness based on the failure of the anti-corruption agency to include Eboigbe in its list of witnesses served beforehand on the defendants. He ruled that the omission by the commission violated Section 379 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2011. He, however, however ruled that the EFCC could still call the witness to testify after amending its proof of evidence to include Eboigbe as a witness in its list of witnesses. EFCC’s lawyer, Offem Uket, asked for an adjournment to file the additional proof of evidence. Defence lawyer, Chief Akin Olujinmi (SAN), expressed displeasure over EFCC’s request for an adjournment which he said was informed by the commission’s failure to keep its house in order. Another defence lawyer, Sunday Ameh (SAN), representing the second defendant, adopted Olujinmi’s position. Justice Okeke adjourned till September 14 and 16 for continuation of trial. https://punchng.com/court-stops-banker-from-testifying-against-babachir-lawal/ |
The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Monday lamented the increasing rate of COVID-19 cases among people in government, saying it was directly impacting on governance and security in the country. The PTF Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, who stated this at the task force press briefing in Abuja, also said the possibility of ordering a fresh total lockdown to curtail further spread of the virus could not be ruled out. The SGF, who advised prominent Nigerians to take COVID-19 protocols seriously, said the virus does not respect status. Mustapha’s warning came amid rising cases of COVID-19 among state governors and other prominent Nigerians. Recently state governors, including David Umahi of Ebonyi, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta and their Ondo State counterpart, Rotimi Akeredolu, contracted the virus. Warning people in authority, the SGF said, “Of recent, we have witnessed a high rate of positive cases especially among people in authority. This has a direct impact on governance and security of our nation. We urge that vigilance and care should be exhibited by all Nigerians, irrespective of status. This virus does not discriminate and the PTF shall keep sustaining its sensitisation messaging.” We can’t rule out fresh total lockdown – PTF When asked if the task force would be considering a fresh lockdown in the face of what it observed as disregard for guidelines, Mustapha said events of coming weeks would determine the next line of action. He said, “We will not speculate on what will happen in future but we will protect the lives of Nigerians. “To achieve that, if it means to lock down again, we will not shy away from that responsibility. We will recommend to the President who will look at the report and take a decision on our recommendation. What happens in the next two three weeks will determine what we will do.” PTF meets security agencies The SGF also said members of the task force met with heads of security agencies earlier on Monday. He said the meeting centred on how to enforce compliance with guidelines among other issues. The Minister of Health, Ehanire Osagie, said the ministry planned to boost overall COVID-19 sample collection by preparing all eligible public and private hospitals nationwide to become collection sites. He said a 17-man team of the ministry left Abuja for Calabar to engage with the Cross River State Government in setting up its COVID-19 response and aligning it with the national response. WASCE holds in August and September The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, said the West African Senior School Certificate Examination would take place between August 4 and September 5, 2020. He also said that the decontamination of the 19, 159 registered centres for this year’s WASCE was not the sole responsibility of government as many of them were private schools. The minister stated, “As soon as we conclude WASCE, we will take up the NABTEB (National Business and Technical Examinations Board) and NECO (National Examinations Council) exams.” Shedding more light on the meeting of the PTF with security chiefs, the National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr Sani Aliyu, said the task force sought their assistance in the enforcement of the use of face masks.” https://punchng.com/we-may-propose-fresh-lockdown-after-two-weeks-says-task-force/ |

Under a government that told us fight against corruption one of her key agenda. |
Oluwatoyin Ojaomo, the lawyer of the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has said the forces behind corruption in Nigeria are more powerful than Covid-19. Ojaomo said this on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme on Monday while reacting to the investigation of Magu by a Presidential panel. The lawyer said his client was under probe because the recoveries he announced publicly and the funds remitted to the government’s coffers did not correspond. He said the funds remitted were more than the monies declared. Ojaomo said, “When you are fighting corruption, the forces behind corruption are so powerful; they are more powerful than Covid-19. You can imagine what is happening. Instead of Magu to be celebrated, those powerful corrupt persons who have the media backing them are trying to call a dog a bad name so they can hang it.” The lawyer said asset recovery was a continuous process and as such there would always be discrepancies in figures. Also speaking, activist Auwal Musa aka Rafsanjani, said Magu’s experience has again shown the need for a legal framework on asset recovery and management. Rafsanjani, who is the Head, Transparency International, said if Magu is humiliated, it could also discourage those who are genuinely dedicated to the fight against corruption. “I don’t think it is a good development for persons who are fighting corruption to be framed,” he said. “Instead of looking at Magu, we should look at the legal and institutional deficits in the area of recovery,” he added. https://punchng.com/forces-behind-corruption-stronger-than-covid-19-magus-lawyer/ |

Alleges plot to compromise case by minister Amaechi denies involvement, says count me out of Rivers APC palaver A political and justice watchdog- Free People’s Social Club and Good leadership Initiative- has appealed to the President of the Court of Appeal (PCA), Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, to ensure that justice is allowed to take its natural course in the appeal over the leadership tussle in the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC). The watchdog, in a petition to the PCA on ISAAC OGBOBULA V RT. HON. IGO AGUMA, ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS, AND OTHERS, alleged that a minister had set in motion machinery to “compromise and desperately upturn the case at the Appeal Court, Abuja”. In contention is the judgement of a Rivers State High Court which affirmed Honourable Igo Aguma as APC chairman in the state, but which is now subject of appeal. The watchdog alleged “a boastful plan by the minister to influence her Lordship to hurriedly upturn the judgement of the Rivers State High Court delivered by Hon. Justice George Omereji in Rt. Hon. Igo Aguma v All Progressives Congress & Othrs in SUIT N0. PHC/4355/2019 in favour of the appelant and this is quite curious.” It added: “The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress in a letter has officially accepted the judgement of the Rivers State High Court and publicly stated that they do not intend to file an appeal against the judgement in Igo Aguma v All Progressives Congress. ”We are also aware as an organisation that the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress has issued an official letter to Rt. Hon. Igo Aguma recognizing him as the Acting Chairman of the APC in Rivers State.” The group asked the PCA to “allow the Port Harcourt Division of the Court of Appeal to freely without any interference whatsoever entertain this appeal and do justice to it as the law prescribes.” President of the group, Chima Samuel, and the Director of Administration, Issa Yusuf Mohammed, who signed the petition, said that since the appeal was filed in Port Harcourt, it should be allowed to be decided there. I’m not involved in APC case, says Amaechi Reacting on Friday, Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, denied the allegations against him and said the watchdog was only out to tarnish his image by alleging he has “a phantom interest in a court case involving the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State.” The minister’s Media Office, warned in a statement yesterday, that no one should ”drag his name into any court matter involving the APC in Rivers or anywhere else as he is not involved in any APC court matter.” The statement reads: “We are aware of plots by a group attempting to muddle the name of the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, by dragging him into an ongoing court case involving the All Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers State. ”The group has perfected plans to rubbish Amaechi’s image by falsely claiming that he (Amaechi) plans to influence the outcome of the said court matter. ”We want to clearly state that the honourable minister is not in court with anybody or any matter relating to the APC. He is in no way involved in any case whatsoever with the APC in Rivers or any other individual or entity in relation to the party. ”The individuals or group pushing this patently false, ill-conceived narrative about the honourable minister are by this statement warned to immediately desist from their evil plot. We are not unaware of their sponsors and paymasters. We will shame them publicly in due time if they don’t put a stop to their nefarious, ungodly, treacherous plans. ”Let us restate that the Honourable Minister, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, is not a defendant or respondent in any matter in court relating to the APC whether in Rivers State or anywhere else.” https://thenationonlineng.net/watchdog-kicks-over-rivers-apc-appeal/ |

Following an error on his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate, Governor Obaseki has been issued a new certificate. Obaseki name was mistakenly written on the NYSC certificate as OBASEK instead of his correct surname, Obaseki. The programme had in the new certificate with number A 004280695 corrected the error. The Edo state incumbent governor was disqualified from contesting in the All Progressive Congress (APC) due to an error on his certificates, among other things. The Professor Jonathan Ayuba-led Screening Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Edo state Governorship primary election speaking on why Obaseki was considered ineligible to contest in the party’s primary election said in part; “On the NYSC certificate dated 6th August 1980, the committee observed that he bears the name ‘Obasek’ Godwin. “While this may be an error on the part of the issuing authority, we observed however that the aspirant has not taken any step ever to have the anomaly corrected by the issuing authority. Due to the saga surrounding his certificate among other issues, Obaseki decamped to the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He subsequently emerged as the PDP flagbearer for the Edo governorship election slated for September 20. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/07/edo-2020-nysc-corrects-error-issues-new-certificate-to-obaseki/ |
