Brazil’s education minister resigned Tuesday only five days after he was appointed, amid accusations that he lied over his academic record. Carlos Decotelli was the first black person to be appointed to the government of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro. Decotelli handed in his resignation to Bolsonaro in Brasilia, said a spokesman, Paulo Roberto, capping several days of controversy. Bolsonaro named Decotelli last week as replacement for Abraham Weintraub, who resigned in mid-June after becoming embroiled in a series of controversies, including making racist anti-Chinese comments on Twitter. Decotelli had claimed he held a Master’s degree from Brazil’s Getulio Vargas Foundation, a doctorate from Argentina’s University of Rosario and a post-doctorate from Germany’s Wuppertal University. But those claims came under scrutiny within days of his appointment, leading much of the Brazilian media to refer to him as the “future ex-minister.” The academic credentials had been vaunted by Bolsanaro in a tweet announcing his appointment last week. As early as Friday, however, Rosario University’s rector said Decotelli had not obtained a doctorate there and had never defended his thesis. On Monday, the minister explained the university jury had asked him to make changes to his thesis, but he had run out of money and had to return to Brazil. Wuppertal University said in a statement that Decotelli had not obtained any academic titles there. Decotelli was also accused of plagiarising several academic papers during his studies in Brazil. The Brazilian university said Tuesday the minister had not been a professor there from 2016-18, as his CV stated. Since Bolsonaro assumed office in January 2019, his administration has seen the dismissal or resignation of around a dozen ministers, due to controversy or incompatibility with the president. Decotelli was the third education minister in 18 months. Additionally, two health ministers have resigned since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil. https://punchng.com/brazil-education-minister-resigns-over-cv-irregularities/ |
The Argentine manager was stunned to see his former player given so few minutes in such an important game Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone said he is "without words" amid Antoine Griezmann's struggles at Barcelona. Griezmann was a 90th-minute substitute against former team Atletico, who earned a 2-2 draw away to stuttering Barca in La Liga on Tuesday. A €120 million (£108m/$134m) signing from Atletico at the start of the season, Griezmann arrived amid much hype but the star forward has struggled at Camp Nou, where he has started on the bench against Sevilla and Athletic Club in recent weeks. Griezmann losing the fight to prove he's not just another Barcelona transfer flop Griezmann has scored eight La Liga goals this season and 14 across all competitions for second-placed Barca, who could fall four points adrift of bitter rivals Real Madrid on Thursday. However, Griezmann has not scored since Barca's 1-1 draw against Napoli in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie prior to the coronavirus pandemic in February. Asked about Griezmann, Simeone told Movistar: "I'm without words." Diego Costa's 11th-minute own goal had put Barca ahead before Saul Niguez's penalty restored parity for Atletico eight minutes later. Lionel Messi converted a penalty of his own five minutes into the second half to celebrate his 700th career goal, but another Saul spot-kick – in the 62nd minute – secured a draw for Atletico. It is the first time Atletico have scored two goals against Barca in La Liga under Simeone, whose side are third and two points clear of Sevilla with five matches remaining. "We are respectful of Barcelona with the quality they have," Simeone said. "The game was played as a result of what we usually do. We started well. Their goal came in an isolated play. Then to generate a difficult game against a team that keep the ball well. "We tried until the end. The work was very good, a very competitive team. I'm happy." Setien admitted he felt bad for Griezmann after the match but revealed he wary of introducing the Frenchman as he can 'destablise' his team. "I understand it's tough for Griezmann to come on when so little time left. I will speak with him tomorrow, I won't say sorry because [it's about] decisions," Setien said. "But I understand he may feel bad and I feel bad for him because he's a great person and professional. "It's difficult to put him on without destabilising the team." https://www.goal.com/en/news/griezmanns-brief-barca-cameo-leaves-simeone-speechless/1t1z3i9phg4x8zmf86ki956eg |

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has dismissed the suit filed a former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, challenging his suspension from the party. A three-man panel of judges presided over by Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam unanimously dismissed the appeal on Tuesday at the request of the former APC national chairman. Oshiomhole had approached the court seeking to challenge his suspension from the party by officials of his ward in Edo State. Justice Danlami Senchi of an Abuja High Court had given effect to the suspension of Oshiomhole from his ward on the ground that the executives of Ward 10 in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State acted in line with the constitution of the party. At the resumed hearing of the suit, the counsel representing the former chairman informed the court of his client’s decision to withdraw the suit which originally sought a stay of execution on the judgment of the court affirming his suspension. Other members of the three-man panel are Justice Mohammed Mustapha and Justice Muazu Lamido. This comes after President Muhammadu Buhari appealed to all aggrieved members of the APC to withdraw all pending litigations in the interest of peace. The National Executive Council (NEC) of the party had also dissolved the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC. In his reaction, Oshiomhole accepted the decision of the council and pledged his loyalty to the ruling party and the President. https://www.channelstv.com/2020/06/30/court-dismisses-oshiomholes-appeal-challenging-his-suspension/amp/ |

The Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) have decried the recent attempt by the regulatory body, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to distance itself from the July 1 commencement of a new service based electricity tariff regime. This position was contained in a statement over the weekend by their umbrella body, the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) by its Executive Director of Research and Advocacy, Barr. Sunday Oduntan. He said: “We are in a regulated sector. We cannot take a decision about a very critical aspect of the sector like tariff without a nod from the regulator (NERC). However, what has happened in recent days is that our regulator is warning us not to mention their name or the Federal Government in any of our communication about the tariff increase with our customers. This is certainly very unfair.” “Many stakeholders have expressed their concern at the unusual silence of our regulator, NERC on the upcoming increase and it looks like a unilateral decision by the DisCos. “We’ll like to inform Nigerians that tariff review (upward or downwards) is the primary responsibility of NERC as our regulator. We are required to submit our proposals and they have the final say”. “Hence we were surprised to receive a letter from NERC to all the DisCos warning them not to mention their name or that of the Federal government in any public communications on tariffs”. “While it is our obligation to communicate the increase, it is also important for customers to know that it is following standard processes of tariff adjustments in the sector with approvals from NERC and the FG. “As DisCos, we believe in the rule of law. We will only carry out lawful approval and instructions by our regulator.” “The proposed increase and the timing of the increase in tariffs was done by NERC. It is their statutory responsibility. DisCos alone cannot fix and approve electricity tariffs. “We are very sensitive to the feelings and yearnings of our customers during this period of COVID-19. “To demonstrate our sensitivity, Nigerians will recall that the DisCos, in conjunction with the National Assembly came out to suggest a two-month free electricity supply for our residential customers but the proposal was not approved by the Federal Government due to paucity of funds occasioned by the reduction of national incomes from sales of crude oil. “The fact that the action is deliberately made to look unilateral is capable of creating public resistance, effectively setting DisCos up to fail,” Oduntan said. https://thenationonlineng.net/discos-condemn-nercs-aloofness-to-tariff-increase/ |

Seetto:. So Tinubu single handedly voted Buhari/Osinbajo into office. As for House of rep. Is Tinubu now a member? For the best of my knowledge, Tinubu is not Party chairman, is not president, is not a traditional ruler, is not God. So tell me. |
Seetto:. Bro read what u just wrote here. That one man single handedly made someone vice president, governor, senator, house of rep, assembly, local chairman. My question to u are: 1. Is this democracy? 2. Is this not corruption? 3. So without him there wouldn't vice president, senators, etc? |
