Liverpool vs. Leeds United Tuesday, November 29, 2016 – 7:45pm (GMT) Anfield League Cup Referee: Andre Marriner The Reds battled their way to a 2-0 win at home to Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday, but attention now turns to the League Cup. Liverpool were defeated on penalties by Man City in last season’s final, and Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to go one better this season. A resurgent Leeds side travel to Merseyside attempting to cause an upset, with Garry Monk’s side in the Championship play-off positions currently. While Liverpool will understandably be strong favourites to progress, they will not have it all their own way against a club with great history of their own. The Reds and the Whites have had some memorable clashes down the years, from the hot-headed Charity Shield showdown in 1974 to Liverpool’s late show at Elland Road in the FA Cup fourth round in 2001. Tuesday’s encounter could provide more drama in a classic British footballing matchup—a win for Liverpool puts them closer to a first piece of silverware in five years. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Last Meeting Leeds were relegated from the Premier League in 2004, with their last league showdown with Liverpool a 2-2 draw at Elland Road in February of that year. It was five years before the two teams met each other again. That meeting came in the League Cup third round, with Rafa Benitez ‘s Reds sneaking a 1-0 victory at the home of their opponents. The game’s only goal came via the right foot of much-maligned striker David N’Gog, with the Frenchman finishing clinically to send his side into the fourth round. It is now over seven years later, but Liverpool supporters will hope for the same outcome. Opposition Q&A We spoke to Leeds fan Rik Cridland ( @RikCridland) to get his thoughts on Leeds’ season and their chances of springing a shock at Anfield. Leeds currently sit 5th in the Championship table—this must be a joy after so many years of disappointment, right? We are Leeds fans, we won’t be taking anything for granted! Yes, it’s very nice to be up there, but sadly the last 15 years has taught us to be wary. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Things change very quickly in football and particularly with an owner like Massimo Cellino. But yes, the team’s good to watch at the minute, so we’re enjoying ourselves. Who do you see as Leeds’ key men going into the game? It’s tricky to know what team Monk will go for, as he’s mixed it up in previous rounds, but I’d expect the big man Pontus Jansson to come back in. He and Kyle Bartley at centre-back have been awesome this season. Also keep an eye out for Hadi Sakho, a winger with bags of pace and trickery. On his day, he is very exciting to watch and creates chances from nothing. Switching our attention to Liverpool, how do you rate them this season? Any players you’re particularly fond or scared of? It’s nice to see Liverpool doing well and playing some attractive football. I’ve heard people question whether you can defend, but given your propensity to score five or six goals at the other end, who cares? Frankly, all your forward line are scary so we’re just hoping you lot have an off day. If I have a favourite Liverpool player it’s going to be James Milner , isn’t it? Amazing to think that he was only 17 when we last played you guys at Anfield in 2003. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW What’s your prediction for Tuesday’s game—a shock on the cards? If it had been at Elland Road I’d have been more optimistic about us getting a result, but it’s going to be tough. We just have to hope you guys have an off game and we can rattle you a little. If we can keep it tight and maybe even nick an early goal, who knows? I’m going for 1-1 and then penalties. Leeds to win. Team News Klopp has been dealt a blow with the news that Philippe Coutinho will be until for the rest of 2016, after he suffered ankle ligament damage against Sunderland. In truth, the Brazilian was likely to be rested for the visit of Leeds anyway, but longer term, it could be damaging to Liverpool’s title aspirations. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana are both also out with respective calf and groin problems, although the attacking duo should be fit sooner rather than later. Roberto Firmino is unlikely to feature either, having not trained on Monday. The Reds’ starting lineup is expected to be much-changed on Tuesday, as was the case against Tottenham in the last 16, when Klopp made 11 alterations. Simon Mignolet, Trent Alexander- Arnold , Lucas Leiva , Ragnar Klavan and Alberto Moreno could all come into the back line, while youngsters Marko Grujic and Ovie Ejaria will hope to start in midfield. Divock Origi should lead the line after his match-changing strike against Sunderland, and prodigious teenager Ben Woodburn could also feature, having made his senior debut on Saturday. Moan everyday? Talk to me everyday? “That’s the way it works. It wasn’t the most easy time for him, but it’s not that it’s the worst time in his life. “The group is very respectful. It’s a good group, so how we handle the players—as long as they want and as long as they work—they can get all the help they want. “It’s the same for Divock and a few other players. If you have a quality group it’s more difficult to go through the door. “It’s not that serious or hard. It’s not nice, but it’s training, with good people around. That’s good and he’s in a good way again.” One to Watch: Charlie Taylor Back in August, Liverpool were loosely linked with a move for Charlie Taylor, but it never came to fruition. The 23-year-old left-back is a talented young player, and at 6’1″ tall, he is not one to be daunted by a physical challenge either. It will be worth keeping an eye on Taylor on Tuesday evening to see if he has the potential to be a future Reds player. That is, of course, assuming he starts. The Reds trail current leaders Chelsea by one point going into the weekend. Last Meeting: Liverpool 2-2 Sunderland Opposition Q & A MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Saturday, March 29, 2014: Manchester United's David Moyes during the Premiership match against Aston Villa at Old Trafford. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda) We spoke to Sunderland fan Rory Fallow (@RoryFallow), contributor to the Roker Report blog and podcast, to get his thoughts on the Black Cats’ campaign, and this weekend’s Anfield showdown. How would you rate Sunderland’s season so far, out of 10? Who have been the standout players? Not very highly, despite recent back-to-back wins. I’d give it a 3/10 but before we actually managed to get a couple of wins, it was probably minus figures. Jermain Defoe is the obvious answer in terms of stand out players. When you watch him play, it’s like he’s never aged and he’s still scoring for fun. At the other end, Jordan Pickford has been brilliant in goal and looks like he’ll get his first England cap this season. It was great for him to finally get a clean-sheet in the Hull game, because he’s kept a few matches respectable for us. The recent revelation though is Victor Anichebe! Two starts, three goals and watching him bully defenders has been brilliant. The hold up play and the space Anichebe opens up has finally given us an identity on the pitch. It’s a pretty obvious plan but hopefully one that teams keep finding difficult to stop. While we can’t expect such brilliant performances from ‘Cheebs’ every week, it’s great to see something clicking in the team, at last. You seem to miraculously escape relegation every season, but do you think this year might be a step too far? The first 10 games of the season were far worse than any of the previous survival campaigns, which led to most fans thinking this would be the year we drop. We’ve put ourselves back in with a chance now, though, and there’s certainly some other terrible teams down there with us, so you never know. LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, February 6, 2016: Liverpool's Roberto Firmino in action against Sunderland during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda) Focusing on Saturday’s game, how highly do you rate this Liverpool side and certain players? Title contenders? You have to have a heart of stone or be an Everton/Man United fan to not enjoy watching this Liverpool team. The way Jurgen Klopp has the side playing is fantastic and Klopp himself is such a great character. I think you’ll definitely finish top-four and be serious title contenders. Adam Lallana is the standout player, for me. Great technique, he can create, finish and he works hard. I have to mention Jordan Henderson as well – I love seeing him doing so well. The determination of him was evident as soon as he broke into our team and it didn’t surprise me to see him get given the captain’s armband at Liverpool. What’s your prediction? How do you see the match panning out in a tactical sense? I can’t see us getting anything out of the game – you’ll just have too much for us going forward. Our plan will be to use Anichebe to take the pressure off the defence, holding up the ball and slowing the game down. Jason Denayer will screen the back four and look to track any late runs through the middle, with John O’Shea dictating and organising at the back. Your quick, attacking movement will obviously see you create chances and you’ve got the personnel to put those opportunities away, something that we got away with against Hull. We’ll need all of our players to be at their best and their concentration levels will have to be 100% too. If Pickford has a Jurgen Macho-esque game then maybe we’ll nick something but I’m not confident. 3-1 to Liverpool. Team News LONDON, ENGLAND - Friday, September 16, 2016: Liverpool's Adam Lallana celebrates after the 2-1 victory over Chelsea during the FA Premier League match at Stamford Bridge. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda) The only major absentee for the Reds is likely to be Adam Lallana, with the 28-year-old still not back in training after picking up a groin injury with England. Klopp could field the same starting line-up that drew at Southampton last time around, with Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum ahead of the more deep-lying Jordan Henderson in midfield. Alternatively, he could be bold and play Philippe Coutinho in midfield in place of Can or Wijnaldum, allowing Daniel Sturridge to come into the attack. Jason Denayer is a doubt for Sunderland because of a tight hamstring, while former Man United youngster Paddy McNair has been ruled out for the entire season after suffering cruciate ligament damage. Match preview : Adam Lallana is unlikely to feature for Liverpool as they look to strengthen their lead at the top of the Premier League with victory at Southampton. The midfielder, who has been in impressive form for club and country, suffered a groin injury in England's 2- draw with Spain at Wembley on Tuesday. Southampton sit in 10th place and will be looking to halt Liverpool's impressive form with Jurgen Klopp's side thrashing Watford 6-1 in their last league outing. Liverpool sit top of the league with a one-point advantage over Chelsea, who take on Middlesbrough on Nissan Super Sunday. Liverpool 6-1 Watford Team news Fraser Forster and Dusan Tadic have been passed fit to start for Southampton after suffering injuries while on international duty. Tadic could yet require a protective mask to protect his nose injury, but of greater concern to manager Claude Puel will be the late fitness tests Ryan Bertrand, Cedric Soares, James Ward- Prowse and Shane Long are to undergo. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is also fit after a knock, but Alex McCarthy and Matt Targett miss out. Fraser Forster has been passed fit to play Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho may be a doubt for the trip to St Mary's. The Brazil international underwent a precautionary scan on Thursday having returned from South America the previous night. Georginio Wijnaldum is set to return fo the visitors. Hull 2-1 Southampton Opta Southampton have lost their last two Premier League games - their first successive league defeats since February/March 2016. Claude Puel's side have won just one of their last five league games. However, the manager will be encouraged by the fact the Saints have lost only one of their last 10 games. Hull 2-1 Southampton Puel will not, however, be encouraged by the amount of points his team have dropped from winning positions this season, with eight points falling by the wayside. Liverpool have won seven of their last eight league games and are unbeaten in their last nine, in what is their best run under Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool have four former Southampton players in Sadio Mane, Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Mane. Sadio Mane celebrates after opening the scoring for Liverpool against Watford Merson's prediction This should be a real, real good game. For Liverpool, these are the times you've got to take advantage. Other teams will come back from international duty, look at the fixtures and think: "Wait a minute, we've got Champions League and Europa League this week, do we rest players or not?" Liverpool don't have to do that. Jurgen Klopp can play his best team, tell them to have a couple days off in the week, and that's your advantage. Six months half Upgrade to Sky S watch Man Utd v Saturday and get months half pric Southampton have had a couple of shocking results, being completely outplayed by Chelsea, and then going to Hull and losing. All of a sudden, they're on a bit of a slump with the Europa League game coming up. Three weeks ago this looked like a difficult game, and all of a sudden it doesn't now. Liverpool so far this season are the most exciting team in the Premier League, but there's a long way to go. PAUL PREDICTS: 1-3 www.skysports.com/football/soton-vs-liverpool/preview/356449 |

MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES
Steve Bower: "Jurgen Klopp might be
trying to dampen the 'great entertainers'

season has captured the imagination of
the whole league.
"After they put four past Crystal Palace last
weekend, Eagles manager Alan Pardew
confessed that Liverpool were the best
team his side had faced all year.
"Whilst the obvious defensive questions
still remain, the challenge for anyone to
get a result at Anfield is an ever-
increasing one with Klopp's men
unbeaten at home since January.
"Watford will certainly be wary of that,
although they do arrive on Merseyside on
the back of three clean sheets in a row

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "Watford
play a different system to a lot of other
teams in the league. We have to work on
this, we have done it all week, and try to

"It's Anfield and [we want to] take a
positive result before the international

Watford head coach Walter Mazzarri: "We

that is in top form at the moment in the

showing this.
"They are playing very well, they have a
great team and great players and the
coach is managing them very well, so I
think they can be one of the title
contenders. But of course, we want to go
there and make a great performance and
make our fans happy."
LAWRO'S PREDICTION
Liverpool are conceding goals - their only
clean sheet in the league so far was their
0-0 draw against Manchester United - but,
while that is an issue, when they are

polite smile, there seems a growing
irritation with being asked if he's prepared

LAWRO'S PREDICTION
I will be at this game for BBC Radio 5 live
and I am expecting the Baggies to make
life difficult for Manchester City, or at least
try to - but I think Pep Guardiola's six-
game winless run will end at the
Hawthorns.

There are wide speculation that Big SAM Alardyce will tak over from David moyes if they lose today. |
Liverpool are looking to win their sixth Premier League game in seven on Saturday, as they take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Crystal Palace vs. Liverpool Saturday, October 29, 2016 – 5:30pm (BST) Selhurst Park Premier League Referee: Andre Marriner FREE £50 BET: Register to unlock your free £50 Ladbrokes bet here Life as a Liverpool supporter couldn’t be much better right now. The Reds are playing some wonderful football under a world-class manager, and they are picking up victories at the same time. Having knocked Tottenham Hotspur out of the League Cup on Tuesday night, attention now turns back to Premier League commitments. Trips to Crystal Palace are never straightforward, and under the Selhurst Park floodlights, a fervent atmosphere will be created. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Jurgen Klopp had the luxury of resting all of his key players for the Spurs game, so his side should be in perfect physical condition against one capable of causing any team problems. A Liverpool win would see them at least stay level on points with leaders Man City, but Klopp will hope their rivals slip up earlier in the day. Palace, meanwhile, have had a disappointing 2016, winning just five times in 28 attempts in the league. They have failed to win in their last three top-flight games, although their current 11th-placed standing is fairly solid. Everything points towards Liverpool seeing off their opponents, but the Premier League has shown time and time again that games of this ilk are potential banana skins. Last Meeting: Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool: 10 men Reds take three points Opposition Q & A We spoke to Palace fan Joel Buckwell ahead of the game, getting his thoughts on the Eagles’ recent form and their chances of victory this weekend. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW It has been a tough 2016 for Palace— are you happy with the job Alan Pardew is doing? And what have you made of their start to this season? Yes. Apart from the FA Cup run, 2016 hasn’t been all fun and games at Palace, but I think this summer’s transfer window has helped turn things around. Personally, I’m happy with Pardew as he’s brought in quality players who have strengthened the squad. It feels like we now have a fully functioning Premier League squad with decent players not guaranteed a start, whereas the last few seasons we’ve had a strong 11 or 12 with a bench lacking the same level, hence haemorrhaging points after injuries at the end of last season. Pardew has a lot of history with Palace and chairman Steve Parish seems to really back him. I hope he sticks around for many years to come and helps take us to greater heights. How has Christian Benteke done since joining in the summer? It took him a few games to find his feet, but now we’re seeing what he’s all about and we’re reaping the rewards. I know he wasn’t a favourite at Liverpool, but we play a style that caters to his strengths. We’ve been crying out for a strong, 15-goal-a-season lone striker with aerial presence for a while now. I think he’ll keep building on what he’s already started this season. I just hope he practices taking penalties in training! With Saturday in mind, which Liverpool players are you most wary of? Philippe Coutinho! I feel that our defence can take wave after wave of Liverpool attacks, especially with Scott Dann looking to be fit again, but Coutinho’s long-range “worldy” strikes from outside the box are just unstoppable. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW We all know Jordan Henderson has it in his locker too. I hope Mandanda, or “STEVE” as he’s known at Selhurst Park, has a game to remember. What’s your prediction? It’s never easy for you boys at Selhurst—I really think we are in for great game. Goals are almost guaranteed on Saturday with your high pressing attacking game and us being so good on the counter. It’s a score draw from me, 2-2 or 3-3 (with a hint of bias). I think Benteke feels that he has a point to prove against his old club, and especially Klopp. Fingers crossed he manages to keep up his recent form and find the back of the net. Selhurst Park LONDON, ENGLAND - Saturday, February Capacity: 26,309 Away fans’ pubs: Pubs in Thornton Heath are more accommodating to away fans than Selhurst or South Norwood now the Spoons in South Norwood has closed down. Flora Sandes is the Spoons in Thornton Heath and you should have no problem getting in there and it is right opposite the train station. Team News LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, As mentioned, Klopp’s first-choice starting lineup were all left out against Spurs, ensuring they are all raring to go for the trip to south London. Daniel Sturridge did all he could to force his way into the team, scoring both goals against Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but he will still likely have to settle for a place on the bench, along with Divock Origi. The frightening attacking trident of Sadio Mane , Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino should all be recalled, as is likely with Loris Karius, Nathaniel Clyne, Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren, Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana . James Milner ‘s health will be closely monitored, with the 30-year-old missing Tuesday’s game through illness—if he isn’t deemed fit to feature, Alberto Moreno could keep his place. Georginio Wijnaldum is back fully fit again, and having impressed in midweek, there is every chance he will take Emre Can‘s place in midfield. LONDON, ENGLAND - Saturday, May 9, Meanwhile, Pardew is sweating over the fitness Jason Puncheon after missing last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to Leicester City with a calf issue. Centre-back Scott Dann is back in contention, however, having recovered from a hamstring injury. Loic Remy, Jonathan Benteke and Pape Soares are all out for the foreseeable future. Form Liverpool – Last five results (all competitions) Won 2-1 vs. Tottenham Won 2-1 vs. West Brom Drew 0-0 vs. Man United Won 2-1 vs. Swansea City Won 5-1 vs. Hull City Crystal Palace – Last five results (all competitions) Lost 3-1 vs. Leicester City Lost 1-0 vs. West Ham Drew 1-1 vs. Everton Won 3-2 vs. Sunderland Lost 2-0 vs. Southampton Klopp’s View Klopp discussed the importance of keeping his entire squad happy, saying he always welcomes the input of his players: “I’m always honest and I say my door and the door in the team is always open but it’s about performing. “We have always this agreement: work hard, don’t talk too much, win games. If a player doesn’t want to be happy I can’t keep him happy, but if he wants to be happy it’s quite easy for me to keep him happy. “Being happy only when you make 48 games, it’s difficult for each player. To feel you are important for the team, that’s 100 per cent true for each player in the squad. I think it’s not too difficult to be happy in our team.” One to Watch: Christian Benteke Players coming up against their former clubs is often a dangerous proposition, and Benteke will be raring to go on Saturday. The striker had a disappointing spell as a Liverpool player last season, and it was obvious early on that Klopp didn’t see a future for him at Anfield. What cannot be denied is that Benteke is a good striker, though, and his power, aerial threat and eye for goal could cause the likes of Matip and Lovren real problems.! Benteke has already scored three goals in his first seven appearances for the Eagles—don’t bet against him adding to that tally this weekend. Odds & TV Info Liverpool are the strong favourites to win on Saturday, as has invariably been the case during this excellent run of form. www.thisisanfield.com/2016/10/can-reds-make-11-matches-unbeaten-crystal-palace-vs-liverpool-preview/ |
Daniel Sturridge: The Birmingham- born forward has largely been out of favour under Jürgen Klopp and is yet to get off the mark in the league. However, he did bag a brace against Burton at the Pirelli Stadium in the second round of this season’s competition and will be hoping to continue that form against Spurs. Klopp's Reds go into Tuesday's EFL Cup tie against Tottenham third in the Premier League, level on points with leaders Manchester City and Arsenal. "We can defend better, we can attack better, we can create better," he said. The hosts will be without suspended captain Jordan Henderson, with Spurs midfielder Moussa Sissoko also banned Klopp will recall goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in place of Loris Karius, who he insists is his first choice. "That's the ranking: Loris number one, Simon number two," said the German. "Mignolet is a very serious player, a good professional. He's still not happy but you cannot see it in training. He is hard working and improving." Striker Danny Ings, who has played just 26 minutes of first-team football this season, is expected to feature and has scored four goals in four games for the club's under-23 side in recent weeks. Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino will rest keeper Hugo Lloris, meaning Michel Vorm is likely to start in goal. Sissoko begins to serve what is expected to be a three-game ban after accepting an FA charge for violent conduct. The France international caught fellow midfielder Harry Arter with an elbow during Saturday's 0-0 draw at Bournemouth. Spurs arrive at Anfield having not beaten Liverpool in eight attempts, their last success being a 2-1 Premier League win in November 2012. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37686653 |
TEAM NEWS
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola must
decide whether to recall Sergio Aguero, who
has featured as a substitute in the last two
games.
Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta are
injured, while City will monitor Vincent
Kompany, who was left out in midweek
because he was not fully fit.
Shane Long misses out for Southampton
after suffering a hamstring injury against
Inter Milan on Thursday.
Matt Targett, Ryan Bertrand and Cedric
Soares are doubts and will be assessed.
Club-record signing Sofiane Boufal came
off the bench in midweek for his debut
and could make his first Premier League
appearance, although a lack of match
fitness means he is unlikely to start.
MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES
Steve Bower: "Both clubs are back in
action after defeat in glamour European
away games this week, but it was
Manchester City who returned with more
unanswered questions.
"Pep Guardiola won't anticipate many
spells of four games without a win this
season. One fact we do know is that the
City manager won't change his approach as
he continues to learn about his new
players and stamp his mark on the team.
"That is what Claude Puel is beginning to
do with Southampton after a slow start,
and luck wasn't on his side in the San Siro
in midweek.
"He'll be fully aware that a sterner test lies
in wait at the Etihad Stadium, where the
Saints have lost on their last six visits.
They have kept clean sheets in their last
two away games, but it would raise some
eyebrows if they continue that particular
record."

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY
Man City manager Pep Guardiola on leaving
out Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany
against Barcelona: "They are the future for
Manchester City. Vincent Kompany was
not perfectly fit and that is why we took
the decision.
"It was a tactical decision [with Aguero]. I
wanted one more midfielder, I tried to
keep the ball in the Camp Nou and when
you have the ball, Lionel Messi, Neymar
and Luis Suarez don't.
"I spoke with Sergio and he was
understanding, I thought in the last 30
minutes, with the Barcelona centre-halves
tiring, he could help a lot from the bench.
"When Sergio decides to leave it will be
his decision. Next time before you [the
media] decide he is not in my plans you
can call me."
Southampton manager Claude Puel: "I
managed against Pep early in his career
and he has not changed his philosophy.
"It's difficult to defend against them,
because they like to have good
possession.
"But for us it is important to play our
football, and I think we can have a good
game."
LAWRO'S PREDICTION
Southampton look very solid at the back
and do not seem to make too many
mistakes. At the other end, Charlie Austin
is going through the sort of spell where
he cannot miss.
City's defeat by Barcelona means they
have now gone four games without a win
in all competitions, but they were still top
of the league going into the weekend.
Some people might be painting it as a
crisis but it really isn't.

Liverpool vs. Man United Monday October 17, 2016 – 8pm (BST) Anfield Premier League Referee: Anthony Taylor Liverpool are 23/20 for the win! This Is Anfield readers can bet £10, Get £30 free with BetVictor, official partners of Liverpool FC. Click here to take advantage of this offer. This has, and always will be, the biggest game in English football. It is a fixture that is watched from all corners of the world, regardless of league positions, and its sheer ferocity and entertainment value makes for riveting viewing. Liverpool are flying at the moment, having won their last five games in all competitions, and their 2-1 win at Swansea City last time around showed a grittier side to their game. Things haven’t got off to a great start for Jose Mourinho and United, with the recent 1-1 draw at home at Stoke City indicative of their early-season unpredictability. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW That said, United sit just three points behind their arch-rivals, admittedly having had a far easier start, and a win would be enormous for them. It may be a cliche, but form generally does go out of the window in games such as these, and it may well come down to a questionable refereeing decision, a moment of genius or a defensive howler. Liverpool are due a win in the Premier League against United, having lost the last four—Monday would be the perfect time to end that run. Last league meeting: Liverpool 0-1 Man United Opposition View We spoke to United supporter Marcus Baxby ( @MarcusBaxby) to hear what he had to say about Monday’s showdown. Are you happy with United’s start, in terms of results and performances? It’s been a bit up and down so far in terms of both results and performances. Premier League wise, we started with three wins and there was a fair bit of buzz, which has since dampened down after a few poor performances and expectations have been managed a bit. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Man City played us off the park in fairness, we were shocking against Watford, we had Leicester beaten by half-time and played well against Stoke —but for their ‘keeper having the game of his life, we’d have won comfortably. So yes, room for improvement but a few more positives than there have been for the last three years. Are you pleased with how Jose Mourinho has started? Has he gone about things any differently to how you expected? Same answer, really. I’m more bothered about results than anything else at the end of the day. That said, having not wanted him as manager before he was appointed, Mourinho does seem to have got the players on side and has brought in some big personalities in Zlatan and Pogba, who need to step up and pull us through tough moments. Whether it’s been different to how I expected is tough. I guess I was hoping that he would be the one to finally show Rooney the door, but it seems to have reached a stage where he is managing the number of games Rooney is playing, so it will be interesting to see whether he starts him on Monday night. Looking at Liverpool, are there any players in particular who strike fear into you ahead of Monday’s game? Or is it more their work as a team? As a team, I’ve been impressed with Liverpool, and I can’t help liking Klopp despite him managing you lot. Lallana is looking like the player you wanted to buy from Southampton, and Coutinho and Firmino are always a threat. I think Sturridge can be kept quiet in games, but he will probably produce a moment of magic now I’ve said that! Hit me with your prediction for the game: how will it pan out? ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW What I will say is it will be a highly charged atmosphere and a huge test for this United squad as to how they can cope. I think Mourinho will find out a few things about some of his players; it can make or break people. We burgled a win last year in the league but then were completely overwhelmed in the Europa League game, so I just hope we do ourselves justice this time around. I’d always take a draw away at Anfield. 1-1. Team News Klopp’s biggest injury concern is Georginio Wijnaldum, with the Dutchman hobbling out of the Netherlands’ 1-0 defeat to France on Monday. The 25-year-old still has a chance of starting at Anfield, though, but Emre Can may well fill in. Adam Lallana is also a doubt, but Klopp has refused to rule him out on contention. Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino are both available, despite arriving back from Brazil duty late in the week, while Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren are back to full fitness. Joe Gomez has made a pleasing return as well, following a year out, with Klopp describing his comeback as “a very nice moment”. It will take Gomez some time to return to the level he was prior to injury, and he likely won’t be considered for Monday, but it is great to see a player of such huge potential back in the fold. As for United, Mourinho has just one member of his squad unavailable: the forever injury-prone Phil Jones. Henrikh Mkhitaryan is fighting for a starting berth, having made a slow start to life in Manchester, while Wayne Rooney will be desperate to be selected, having enjoyed some great moments in the fixture down the years. Mourinho is likely to field a typically robust starting lineup, in a bid to target Liverpool’s much-publicised set-piece frailties. We know about the issues with Gini and Adam, but they’re not ruled out. “Four sessions to go, we have to see. I can wait until I make my final decision —we’ll have a really good team on the pitch.” “Roberto could do a bit more [than Coutinho] in the last session. Phil played two games so needed more recovery after a long, long flight. “It’s a long trip, and it’s still in their legs, but each hour helps and playing on Monday is an advantage, of course.” One to Watch: Marcus Rashford Few English youngsters have burst onto the scene quite like Marcus Rashford in recent years, and the teenager is expected to start at Anfield. The striker is on the crest of a wave at the moment, with everything he touches seemingly turning to goals— 12 in 27 appearances for United—and he will be a real threat against Liverpool. Likely to be deployed on the left-hand side, Rashford’s pace, directness and power will constantly test Clyne’s defensive resolve. The 18-year-old is playing without any fear, and he will believe he can be the match-winner in one of the biggest games of his career so far. Odds & TV Info Liverpool are 23/20 to pick up three invaluable points in front of the home faithful, while United’s odds of 5/2 shown how unfancied they are in comparison to years gone by. The draw is also 5/4 , and while Mourinho would clearly be the happier of the two managers with that result, it would be far from disastrous for the Reds. TEAM NEWS Manchester City pair Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling could return from respective hamstring and calf injuries. Fabian Delph could also be involved and Vincent Kompany is training after a groin problem, but Bacary Sagna has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. Everton defender Leighton Baines is available after a two-match absence with a hamstring strain. Romelu Lukaku and Phil Jagielka have recovered from thigh problems and Darron Gibson is fit. Aaron Lennon and James McCarthy will be assessed. MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES Guy Mowbray: "This game's sub-plot would make a good documentary, if not quite the full film story. "Twenty six years ago, the late, great Johann Cruyff first encouraged a young Pep Guardiola to learn from his Barcelona team-mate Ronald Koeman, laying the foundations for his much admired football philosophies. "Now, as they meet for the first time as opposing coaches, will the mentor be able to outsmart his once very eager pupil? How very Star Wars! "It mostly depends on how their players perform of course, and whilst City should have the edge - especially at home - Koeman will feel that his can follow the Spurs example of how to beat them. "A game to have made Cruyff proud will do beautifully." Twitter: @Guymowbray WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on former room-mate Ronald Koeman: "I switched off the light before we went to sleep! When he needed water - wake up to get water for him. I was the youngest so I adapted to him. "Last season with Southampton he did great, he did an extraordinary job and they qualified for European competition. They (Everton) started really well this season as well." Everton manager Ronald Koeman: "I have all good memories of Pep. We have a really strong friendship. Sometimes we have time for dinner and to talk about football and to talk about life. "When he was manager of Barcelona I saw the best Barcelona team in every aspect of football. Most of the other managers win titles but not with that way of football. "It is impressive the way City play football. It's difficult to defend against but we have had some good examples of teams getting a good result against City." LAWRO'S PREDICTION I think it might be a frustrating afternoon for City. They have had players scattered around the globe over the past week or so and may not be at their best. It is the same for Everton of course but, if both teams are below par, I would still expect the Toffees to leave with a point. http://m.bbc.com/sport/football/37594239 |
