Team news, match facts, manager quotes and odds ahead of the Champions League encounter between Real Madrid and Liverpool at the Bernabeu. Holders Real Madrid have been in imperious form in the competition thus far and will be confident of making it four wins from four games as they take on opponents they beat away from home a fortnight ago. Real, now top of La Liga, are on a club record of 11 straight wins in all competitions as they host five-times European champions Liverpool in Group B, having beaten them 3-0 at Anfield on matchday three. And with Cristiano Ronaldo in scintillating form, the hosts are heavy favourites against Liverpool, who could start with captain Steven Gerrard on the bench. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers admitted that he considers Saturday's Premier League clash with Chelsea more important than the match in the Spanish capital and he could opt to rest several players, including his skipper. TEAM NEWS The world's most expensive player Gareth Bale is set to feature for Real, either from the start or off the bench, having recovered from a thigh injury. But Carlo Ancelotti will not be able to call on Jesé (knee), Dani Carvajal (hamstring), Fábio Coentrão (knee), Asier Illarramendi (unspecified), Sami Khedira (unspecified). Steven Gerrard could be demoted to the bench in a bid to rest him ahead of the weekend's domestic fixture with Chelsea, while Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said it is "highly unlikely" that Daniel Sturridge will play as the England striker continues to recover from a calf injury. Raheem Sterling may also be rested, while summer signings signings Lazar Markovic and Adam Lallana could be in line to start at the Bernabeu. Tweet MANAGER QUOTES Carlo Ancelotti: "We have a serious side. I don’t think that we will lose. [Mario] Balotelli is spoken of a lot, maybe too much. He has quality and is at a side where they are not playing well. They have lost [Luis] Suarez who scored a lot and they need another solution. But I don’t think all of Liverpool’s problems are about Balotelli. He needs to do his work for the side, that’s all that can be asked of him. The coach needs to find the right system with the new players." Brendan Rodgers : "Cristiano Ronaldo at this moment in time is probably the best player in the world ... This week and these games against the likes of Real Madrid I see as a great opportunity for the squad – you put them out there and you put your trust in them to perform. In Steven’s case, if he is playing on Saturday I have to look at what is the priority for him and us. If he played against Newcastle and didn’t play tomorrow night you could say that was the priority. We're still very much in the group to qualify, which is the objective. It's a big ask playing against arguably the best team in the world at the moment. But we'll go into it with confidence." MUST-SEE VIDEO MATCH FACTS Liverpool lost 0-3 at home to Real Madrid in their last Champions League fixture on MD3 - this was the Reds first ever defeat against their Spanish opponents in all competitions (P4 W3 L1). Liverpool won their only previous away game against Real Madrid – 1-0 in February 2009, thanks to a goal from Yossi Benayoun. Real Madrid have won nine successive Champions League home games; their longest run since December 1998. The last time that Madrid went on a longer winning run at home in the Champions League/European Cup was between Sept 1978 and March 1988 (17 wins in a row). Cristiano Ronaldo (70) needs one more goal to equal Raul’s all-time goalscoring record in the Champions League (71 goals). Ronaldo has scored 55 goals in 54 Champions League appearances for Real Madrid. Karim Benzema has scored in three successive CL appearances (four goals) – he hasn’t scored in four successive CL apps since March 2011. Liverpool have failed to score in their last two Champions League games, despite attempting 27 shots (inc. blocked). The Reds have not failed to score in three successive CL games since September 2006 (five games). https://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/champions-league-real-madrid-v-liverpool-preview-gerrard-030221615--sow.html |

Liverpool travel to Newcastle on Saturday looking to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to five games. Ben Twelves looks ahead to the clash. Newcastle United v Liverpool Premier League; Saturday, 1st November 2014; 12:45pm kick-off Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool head to the North East to take on a rejuvenated Newcastle in their 10th game of the Premier League season on Saturday, with both teams having enjoyed success in the League Cup this week. The Reds will arrive at St James’ Park off the back of a morale boosting 2-1 comeback against Swansea in midweek, but they face a far stiffer challenge now, with the Magpies resurgent having recorded fantastic back-to- back away wins against Tottenham in the Premier League and Manchester City in the League Cup. Last 5 In the last five visits to Tyneside, the Reds have lost twice, drawn once and won twice – the last of which was two seasons ago when Rodgers’ side – without a banned Luis Suarez – thrashed the Geordies 6-0, thanks to a brace each from Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge and a goal apiece from Fabio Borini and Daniel Agger. Last season, the two teams battled out a 2-2 draw on a day Rodgers chose to operate with a 3-5-2 formation on the spacious St James’ Park pitch. The Reds fell behind to Yohan Cabaye’s long range strike before Steven Gerrard’s penalty – which resulted in the home side being reduced to 10 men – pulled Liverpool back on level terms. Paul Dummett put Newcastle back in front despite being a man down, only for Daniel Sturridge to once again level the match for Liverpool as he headed in Luis Suarez’s cross at the near post. Team News Jose Enrique has been added to the injury list due to suffering from a knee problem, and the Spaniard is therefore unavailable for the return to his former club. Mamadou Sakho , Jon Flanagan, Suso and Daniel Sturridge all remain out, with the England striker frustratingly set to miss his twelfth game of the season to date. Ahead of a huge clash in Madrid on Tuesday night, Rodgers is likely to freshen up his side from the team that played in midweek and he could make a number of changes, with Simon Mignolet, Martin Skrtel , Alberto Moreno, Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard all expected to return to the starting XI. Joe Allen and Emre Can were also rested in midweek, and the midfield duo will be hopeful of recalls to the team, as will Adam Lallana and Mario Balotelli who did feature in the cup match, but only as second half substitutes. Fabio Borini – who impressed in the cup tie and was a large factor behind the turnaround – will also be hoping his tenacious performance is rewarded with more match-day involvement whether from the bench or in the starting team, starting on Saturday. Opposition After a woeful start to the season saw Newcastle in the relegation zone, the Magpies, typically, have found some form which looks to have turned their season around, having gone unbeaten in the month of October. That form saw Alan Pardew’s side win three out of four fixtures, picking up two league wins and progressing to the quarter final stage of the Capital One Cup – knocking out the current holders, and a very strong Man City team on their own turf on Wednesday night. Pardew made wholesale changes to his team for the cup clash, and the Newcastle manager could recall a number of the players he chose to rest back to the starting team such as, Tim Krul, Vernon Anita, Moussa Sissoko, Yoann Gouffran, Remy Cabellia and Ayoze Perez. However, one player the Newcastle boss may not be able to call upon, is Pappis Cisse, who, Pardew revealed in his pre-match press conference, is rated “touch-and-go” and the Senegalese international is set to be monitored closely ahead of the match. Midfielder Cheick Tiote has been ruled out for the home side. The Geordies will be looking to turn three successive wins in all competitions into four on Saturday, but they’ll have to record their first win over Liverpool since the 2011/12 season, when they overcame Kenny Daglish’s side 2-0 in a game that saw Jose Enrique end up in goal for the Reds after Pepe Reina was sent off with ten minutes remaining. Saturday’s fixture is the early kick-off, meaning the match will be shown live on BT Sport 1 with kick-off from St James’ Park coming at 12:45pm. |

The Shrews are three points off top spot in League Two after a run of four straight wins has catapulted Micky Mellon’s men up the This league two club are the leader so Chelsea should be wary of their threat. |
http://www1.skysports.com/football/live/match/326929/preview A late Robin van Persie strike denied the Blues another Premier League victory in stoppage time at Manchester United on Sunday, and Jose Mourinho will want his side to to put that disappointment behind them by putting the Shrews to the sword. The Blues remain unbeaten in all competitions, but were not entirely convincing in the last round of this competition, labouring past Sky Bet Championship side Bolton 2-1 at Stamford Bridge. The League Cup was the first trophy Mourinho won as Chelsea manager back in 2005, with an extra-time win over Liverpool earning the Blues their fourth League Cup trophy. Shrewsbury will be no pushovers for what is likely to be a much-changed Chelsea at the Greenhous Meadow. The Shrews are three points off top spot in League Two after a run of four straight wins has catapulted Micky Mellon’s men up the table. The Shropshire side showed their resilience at the weekend after coming from a goal down against Portsmouth to secure a 2-1 victory, and will be taking plenty of momentum into one of the biggest matches in the club's history. They have so far knocked out Blackpool, Leicester and Norwich on their way to the fourth round. Team news Mourinho looks set to ring the changes for Chelsea's visit to Shrewsbury. The likes of Petr Cech, Nathan Ake and Mohamed Salah could feature in the fourth- round tie, but striker Diego Costa, who missed Sunday's game at United as a result of illness and a hamstring injury, is unlikely to be risked. Loic Remy (groin), Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic (both suspended) are unavailable, but midfielder Ramires, who has been out for over five weeks with a groin problem, could return. Shrewsbury captain Liam Lawrence came off the bench in the weekend win, and should be fit enough to face the Blues. Striker Andy Mangan also completed his comeback from a knee injury by appearing as a substitute on Saturday, and is likely to be named on the bench again. |

Liverpool look to get back to winning ways when they take on Swansea City at Anfield in the Capital One Cup fourth round on Tuesday night. The Reds season has failed to take off, with their Premier League, Champions League and Capital One Cup performances leaving much to be desired. Brendan Rodgers’ side needed a record- breaking penalty shootout success against Sky Bet Championship side Middlesbrough in the third round after twice being pegged back. The 14-13 victory was only settled when Boro's Albert Adomah missed with the 30th spot-kick, which equalled the British record for the highest-scoring post-match contest, set over three years ago when Dagenham and Redbridge edged past Leyton Orient in a Football League Trophy tie. The weekend draw with Hull only added to the growing frustrations on the Anfield terraces, and victory over fellow Premier League side Swansea is needed to ease pressure of Rodgers’ shoulders. The Swans have impressed this season with Garry Monk earning plenty of plaudits since being appointed permanent boss. The south Wales side are now in a lofty sixth position after a convincing win over Leicester at the weekend, and Monk will be hoping his side can better their Capital One Cup third round performance, when the Swans laboured past Championship side Rotherham. Team news Rodgers is expected to make several changes for the visit of Swansea with Lazar Markovic, Suso and Kolo Toure likely to get a run out. Liverpool have no new injury concerns after the weekend draw with Hull, with Daniel Sturridge and John Flanagan long term absentees. Mamadou Sakho is out for a further week with a calf injury. Monk is expected to name a strong Swansea side as he prepares to renew acquaintances with his former manager Rodgers. Gerhard Tremmel has started Swansea's two previous League Cup ties this season and is likely to replace Lukasz Fabianski in goal, but Monk seems set to keep changes to a minimum as the Welsh club look to repeat their Anfield win at the same stage of the competition two years ago. But Gylfi Sigurdsson, who limped off during the second half of the 2-0 Premier League home victory over Leicester on Saturday, and Wayne Routledge could be handed breathers after their heavy workloads so far this term. |

Liverpool will be looking to put their Champions League lesson at the hands of Real Madrid behind them as they go in search of their third consecutive league win, whilst Hull City are looking for another positive result after coming away with a draw at Arsenal last weekend. To be played on Saturday 25th October 2014 at 15:00. Venue: Anfield, Liverpool. Odds: Liverpool 5/11, Draw 15/4, Hull City 7/1 Last season: 2-0 Preview & injury news Given that Liverpool have had something of a stuttering start to the season, they aren't too badly placed. There may be an element of fortune in that as they go in search of third consecutive league win against Hull City at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, as they look to put the disappointing result against Real Madrid at home behind them. The Reds are currently fifth, level on points with West Ham United who occupy fourth place and face a difficult task against Manchester City this weekend - so this weekend presents an opportunity for the Reds to make their league position look much healthier - especially with Manchester United and Chelsea playing each other the following day. Hull City will be on a high going into this, but with a tinge of disappointment, and will be the fresher of the two sides going into this encounter. They got an impressive draw at the Emirates Stadium but it could have been more if Danny Welbeck hadn't found a late equaliser against the targets who have made a solid start to the season again after a busy summer from Steve Bruce. If they were to leave Anfield with a famous victory, they could leapfrog their opponents in the table. article continues below The two sides have conceded 25 goals between them so far this season, so it's doubtful this one is going to end in a goalless draw. On the injury front, Liverpool are still without Daniel Sturridge after he suffered another injury setback ahead of last weekend's trip to Queens Park Rangers, meaning there is a little bit of uncertainty over who will start up front for the home side after Mario Balotelli's disappointing performances of late. Mamadou Sakho is sidelined with a thigh problem whilst Jon Flanagan isn't due back until at least December with a knee problem. Hull City have something of a goalkeeping crisis ahead of Saturday with Allan McGregor sidelined with a shoulder problem, and Steve Harper tore a bicep in the draw against Arsenal. As a result one of Rory Watson or Joe Cracknell will have a place on the bench from the development squad. Eldin Jakupovic is likely to start in goal. There are injury worries over Michael Dawson who limped off against Arsenal with an ankle problem and Nikica Jelavic who has a knee problem. Key stats Possession Percentage % Accurate passes Total attempts per game % Tackles Won Error Lead To Shot Played Liverpool 54.25 84.05 15.88 76.25 5 8 Hull City 44.38 79.48 9.88 78.57 1 8 The statistics suggest that Liverpool will have the Lions' share of the play and be the more threatening going forward, given that they lead on possession, accurate passing and scoring attempts per game. Hull City, however, seem to be a bit more solid at the back, despite conceding one more goal than their opponents this weekend in terms of winning tackles, and errors leading to shots. Liverpool may find a way through, but they don't want to produce more errors, whilst Hull may well be patient and wait for their opportunities. 5 players to watch Philippe Coutinho - After his match-winning cameo against Queens Park Rangers, and his performance against Real Madrid which saw him applauded off by the Spaniards in the crowd, Coutinho seems to be rediscovering some of his best form. After being substituted early in the loss to Madrid, Liverpool may be looking to their playmaker to provide some more magic this weekend. Mohamed Diame - Diame seems to be thriving in his preferred role under Steve Bruce, and has something of a knack when it comes to scoring against the top sides. Another goal would do nicely for the visitors here, but they will face up against an energetic midfield. Rickie Lambert - Brendan Rodgers has an interesting decision to make given the form of Mario Balotelli. Does he take him out of the firing line and start Lambert, or does he persist with him? It wouldn't be surprising to see Lambert to play at least some role this weekend. Tom Huddlestone - If Hull are to leave Anfield with a good result, they are going to have to look after the ball. Last season Huddlestone did that well when they met in at the KC Stadium, and they will be looking for a similar job from their central midfielder again. Martin Skrtel - The Slovakian has looked uncertain at centre-back, then again so has the rest of the defence, but there have been times when he has been losing battles in the area, mistiming his tackles and looking lost at times. The Reds could do with Skrtel discovering some form quickly as they look to tighten up at the back. Last time they met #459947369 / gettyimages.com Liverpool 2-0 Hull City, January 2014, Premier League Liverpool were coming into this game on the back of two consecutive defeats over the Christmas period and looking to avenge their defeat at the KC Stadium only a month earlier in the first game of 2014. Both sides were feeling the effects of the festive period and Liverpool took the lead in the first half through a Daniel Agger header from a corner. Shortly after the half time break, Luis Suarez scored his 20th league goal of the season with a trademark free kick, and it was later revealed he played with a foot injury. Hull didn't have much to offer in reply as Philippe Coutinho could have made it three only to be denied by Allan McGregor after a wonderful solo run, as the Reds moved back up into the top four. http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2014/10/23/liverpool-v-hull-city-match-preview-stats-team-news-1/ |
