European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Capital One Cup :arsenal Vs Chelsea On Tuesday By 7:45pm by luvola(op): 12:09am On Oct 28, 2013
High-flying Arsenal will look for their
first win against Chelsea in more
than two years in the fourth round
of the League Cup on Tuesday.
The Premier League table-toppers
bounced back from their first loss in more
than two months - which came in the UEFA
Champions League against Borussia
Dortmund - with a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace
on Saturday.
Mikel Arteta from the penalty spot and
Olivier Giroud scored the goals for Arsenal,
who have not lost an away match in any
competition since March.
Arteta was later sent off and will miss the
Chelsea clash, with the Emirates Stadium
outfit keen to reverse a trend that has seen
them fail to defeat their London rivals in
their last three meetings.
There are still significant injury problems for
Arsenal, with Theo Walcott (abdominal), Alex
Oxlade-Chamberlain and Abou Diaby (both
knee) as well as Lukas Podolski (hamstring)
on the sidelines, while Mathieu Flamini
(groin) has also been added to that list.
Boss Arsene Wenger has traditionally used
the League Cup as a chance to give his
younger players a taste of first-team football,
buthe has promised to pick a side more
than capable of winning the match.
"I will rotate against Chelsea, but play with a
team that has a good chance to qualify,"
Wenger said.
German winger Serge Gnabry is likely to be
involved from the start for Arsenal, after
impressing off the bench at Palace, while
fellow youngsters Thomas Eisfeld, Ryo
Miyaichi and Isaac Hayden could also
feature.
Striker Nicklas Bendtner, defender Thomas
Vermaelen and goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski
are likely to provide the experience in
Wenger's side.
Arsenal have won the competition twice,
their last triumph coming back in 1993, with
Wengeryet to win the League Cup with the
club, having lost finals in 2007 and 2011.
That 2007 defeat was against Chelsea, as
Didier Drogba scored twice to guide his side
to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory in Cardiff.
Only two teams – Liverpool and Aston Villa –
have won the League Cup more than
Chelsea, who have lifted the trophy on four
occasions.
Chelsea will also enter the match in good
form, with their last-gasp 2-1 win over
Manchester City on Sunday lifting them to
second in the Premier League table.
Fernando Torres scored the winner in the
90th minute, with the result extending their
winning streak in all competitions to five
matches.
The short turnaround between games
should see Chelsea rotate their squad
heavily, with the likes of Juan Mata, Willian,
Kevin De Bruyne and Michael Essien keen to
impress manager Jose Mourinho.
After making an error in Chelsea's 4-1 win
over Cardiff, defender David Luiz has begun
the last two matches on the bench and is
likely to start for the visitors, who are still
without Dutch midfielder Marco van Ginkel
due to a serious knee injury.

Match Preview & Injury news

Steve Clarke will be travelling to Anfield in the hope he can repeat the feat against the former club he was once assistant manager of. The Baggies of course don’t have the powerhouse of Romelu Lukaku in their ranks this season, but have proved they have threats elsewhere which has seen them win at Old Trafford against Manchester United as well as taking a draw against Arsenal.

Liverpool will be viewing this game as a ‘must win’ given the difficult run of fixtures that they will face in the next two months, and will hope there are no goals conceded from set-pieces this week. Dropping points here could well be a bit of a blow to their credentials for a Champions League place but they have had a good start to the season as they sit 3rd, two points behind Arsenal at the top. West Brom have proved difficult to beat on the road so far this season, and currently sit 12th on ten points.

Lucas Leiva should return for Liverpool in midfield after missing the past two league games, one for suspension and the other because of the birth of his child. There were suggestions Philippe Coutinho could return for this game but next week’s trip to Arsenal is deemed to be the likelier return date. Jose Enrique is a doubt whilst Iago Aspas is recovering from a thigh injury and unlikely to return until December.

West Brom could welcome Scott Sinclair into the side after Steve Clarke suggested he could be fit for the trip to Anfield. The Baggies are still without Zoltan Gera and Ben Foster is still recovering from a broken foot.

Statistics

Daniel Sturridge is Liverpool’s top scorer in the league with seven goals this season.

Morgan Amalfitano is West Brom’s top scorer in the league with two goals this season.

Liverpool last six: Won 3, Drawn 2, Lost 1

West Brom’s last six: Won 2, Drawn 3, Lost 1

Liverpool’s home form: Played 4, Won 3, Drawn 0, Lost 1, Goals For 5, Goals Against 2

West Brom’s away form: Played 4, Won 1, Drawn 3, Lost 0 Goals For 2, Goals Against 1

Liverpool had 62% possession in their last league match, a 2-2 draw away to Newcastle.

West Brom had 50% possession in their last league match, a 0-0 draw away to Stoke City.

Five players to watch

Victor Moses

With Coutinho still likely to be absent, Moses will be occupying his position as the ‘number ten.’ His place in the side is going to be under the spotlight, so a big performance here will do him no harm.

Scott Sinclair

Sinclair could be included in Steve Clarke’s side this weekend. Will he get the opportunity to impress and cause Liverpool’s defence some problems?

Daniel Sturridge

Currently the Premier League’s leading scorer, Sturridge has scored in all but one game this season, with an impressive record of seven goals from eight games. Will he get his eighth league goal of the season this weekend?

Morgan Amalfitano

Amalfitano has been impressive since signing for the Baggies on loan and has played a big part in a couple of big games this season for West Brom. His performance at Old Trafford was crucial to West Brom taking all three points, can he do something similar at Anfield?

Lucas

Lucas is likely to reclaim his place in the Liverpool starting eleven this weekend. It will be interesting to see if there is a noticeable difference in the way the team plays with the Brazilian back at the heart of the midfield.

Last time they met

Liverpool 0-2 West Brom, Premier League February 2013.

It was an incredibly frustrating night for Liverpool as they lacked that killer instinct which left hopes of European football were getting slimmer and slimmer. West Brom had Ben Foster in very good form, pulling off a string of good saves including a Steven Gerrard penalty ten minutes from time when the scoreline was 0-0. Gareth McAuley headed home a corner to give West Brom the lead immediately after, before substitute Romelu Lukaku bullied his way through the Liverpool defence to slot home a second, meaning the Baggies completed the double over Liverpool.

Alan Pardew has challenged his Newcastle team to make a statement about the destiny of their season as they attempt to right two horrific wrongs.

The Magpies face in-from Liverpool at St James' Park on Saturday and then head to arch-rivals Sunderland eight days later in a pair of fixtures which could provide a telling indication of their current state of health.

Six months ago, the same two clubs provided Pardew's men with the rudest of awakenings when the Black Cats made the short trip to Tyneside and against all the odds, left with a famous 3-0 victory a fortnight before the Reds doubled the dose in more than once sense in a 6-0 rout.

However, Pardew is hoping his players can gain a measure of revenge for both debacles and prove that they are far better than they appeared to be on either of those days.

He said: ''You hope so. I'd like to think it puts fire in your belly because that's what it should do.

''I have certainly got fire in my belly to get positive results and make sure they are distant memories.''

If Newcastle are to achieve the first leg of their aim, they will have to find a way to shackle Liverpool front two Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Suarez was suspended for last season's encounter, in which Sturridge scored twice, but the pair have formed a formidable partnership at the start of the new campaign, prompting manager Brendan Rodgers to suggest there are not many better double-acts around.

It is a view with which Pardew agrees whole-heartedly.

He said: ''They carry a threat in front of you and in behind, which is the best threat you can have.

''If you defend deep against them, they pick it up short and particularly Suarez starts running at you and causes you all sorts of problems, yet if you play a high line, then Sturridge's pace is a problem in behind.

''It's that mixture that is probably why they are having such success. It gives a back four a problem.

''But taking all of that aside, they are also great players and that makes it doubly difficult.''

Fabricio Coloccini's absence through injury may make the process of containing the Reds' SAS strike-force that much more difficult, although Pardew is hoping that his defenders will be up to the task.

Steven Taylor, a potential replacement for Coloccini, is unlikely to have recovered in time from a hamstring problem, so Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is in line to start alongside Mike Williamson.

Meanwhile, midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has been allowed to return to his native Argentina for personal reasons.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will takes his strongest squad of the season to Newcastle with the assertion there is plenty more to come from his side.

The second-placed Reds head to St James' Park for Saturday's early kick-off at virtually full strength.

Only playmaker Philippe Coutinho is missing as he continues his recovery from a shoulder operation as full-backs Glen Johnson and Aly Cissokho and midfielder Joe Allen all return.

''We'll arrive with our strongest squad of the season against Newcastle,'' said Rodgers.

''We'll get better as we grow together more. I go on about performance because I don't just like to get three points; I worry about playing well and playing in a certain way. That's always how I've been.

''But I can't take anything away from how we've been so far. In terms of results, we've been absolutely brilliant and this is the most competitive league in the world.

''But it shows you how much growth there is still left in the team, that we can win games 3-1 (last time out at home to Crystal Palace) and I can come away a little bit dissatisfied because of the performance.

''What I can't argue with is the work of the players, the honesty of the players, how humble they are and how willing they are to come in to train every day to be better.

''I've got a great group here that I think will get better - that's something that we aim to do, always improve.

''If we can do that and continue to win games, then of course I'll be happy.''

Not that Rodgers will be taking the Magpies lightly even if they have struggled to hit top form at home having registered a win, a draw and defeat at St James' so far.

They were 2-1 winners at Cardiff prior to the international break and the Reds boss expects them to have been lifted by that after two successive league defeats.

And he does not expect their 6-0 drubbing over the Magpies in April to give his side any advantage.

''In our game last year, we were exceptional up there in our performance level,'' he added.

''With all due respect it probably has no bearing on the game at the weekend.

''It's going to be a tough game, but we're full of confidence and real belief in the team.

''There will be even greater motivation from our perspective, because we know that Newcastle are coming off the back of a really good result at Cardiff.

''It hasn't been so easy for them at home. It's a difficult place - you've got some 50,000 really passionate supporters who demand that you play attacking football.''

Christianity Etc › Anti-graft Group Expresses Concern Over Pastors’ Extravagant Lifestyles by luvola(op): 3:32am On Oct 17, 2013
A civil rights organisation, **Anti-Corruption Network** (ACN), on Wednesday, expressed concern over the extravagant lifestyles of Nigerian, urging them to stop monetising their consciences and seek salvation.

The ACN group, which also condemned the high tuition fees being charged by private universities founded by pastors, called on the church to wake up from its slumber and make the fees affordable for members of the congregation whose tithes, it said, were used for establishing the institutions.

Mr Dino Melaye (The Executive Secretary of ACN and former member of the House of Representatives) in a statement titled : ‘Private Jets, Higher Fees and Nigerian Pastors’, said, “we should stop deceiving ourselves because we cannot deceive God.”

“Men of God should return to their first love which is salvation and stop monetising their consciences . They should stop being materialistic because the Biblical injunction is that we should seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness and all other things will be added unto it,” Melaye said.

“The men of God don’t want any other person to talk about them. But Jesus Christ Himself asked His followers: ‘Who do men say I am?’ That means Jesus Christ was ready to be debated, talked about and analysed. So men of God should also not criticise those who analyse them and their activities. Again, the Bible said, test every spirit and hold unto that which is true. This means that it is our responsibility to check them.”

According to Melaye , school tuition fees in most supposedly mission schools in Nigeria are “mouth-watering and not for the poor.”

“ Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU) 450,000 per semester , Bowen University, N650,000 per semester; Covenant University, N640,000 per semester; Benson Idahosa, N500,000 per semester; Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), N450,000 per semester; Ajayi Crowther University, N350,000 per semester; Madonna University, N350,000 per semester,” he noted, adding that “all of these universities were built from the tithes and offerings of the common worshippers who obviously now cannot afford to send their wards to these schools they built with their sweat. There are all manners of offerings in our churches today, all to establish a man and catapult his ego by purchasing a private jet with monies from innocent worshippers.”

The ex-legislator also accused some pastors of using Malachi 3:6-12, a quote from the Bible, as an instrument for extortion and self aggrandizement.

He said: “Warren Buffet who owns the company that produces these jets flies around the world in commercial airlines. What absurdity imported into the House of God! The Church must wake up from its slumber of ‘orishirishi’ seeds”.

“The congregation is advised to sow a seed, special offering seed, first fruit seed, redemption seed, thanksgiving seed, harvest seed, tithes, pastor’s birthday seed, church building seeds, evangelism seed, father’s day seed, mother’s day seed, children’s day seed, pastor’s cake seed, seed for the poor, olive oil seed, books seed, Compact Disc and DVD seeds, etc.

“All these seeds germinate to become luxurious houses, cars, servicing of body guards, women and purchasing of private jets, while the donors perish in abject poverty and penury. Their wards are in public schools while government and oil thieves and politicians send their children to schools built by the barber, bricklayer, mechanic, hair dresser, tomato seller, civil servants, artisans and unemployed.”

Melaye also called on God to “have mercy on these so-called Men of God, whom we now address as Daddy and their wives as Mummy not minding their ages.”

“They have Different Personal Assiatants including the one who carries the Bible. Will Christ find Christianity on earth when He appears. Time to stop deceiving ourselves because we cannot deceive God. Seek first the Kingdom of and every other thing is jara. Those who prepare for their heavenly home and have genuine calling will not be carried away by materialism,” he said.

Politics › Shutdown: Senate Leaders Announce Deal To Avert US Default by luvola(op): 3:12am On Oct 17, 2013
WASHINGTON (AFP) – US Senate leaders in a move to avoid a global fiscal shock took a giant step on Wednesday by unveiling a plan to increase the nation’s debt ceiling and end the government shutdown.

The Senate Majority Leader (Harry Reid) announced a deal that calls for reopening the federal government with a temporary budget until 15th of January and extending US borrowing authority until 7th February.

“The compromise when reached will provide our economy with the stability it desperately needs,” Reid said, after working behind closed doors with his Republican rival (Senator Mitch McConnell)

President Barack Obama quickly hailed the agreement and urged Congress to act swiftly to ensure that “the government reopens and the threat of default is removed,” the White House said.

The eleventh-hour agreement still needs to pass both chambers of Congress — including an unpredictable House of Representatives — before it reaches the desk of Obama.

Lawmakers said they believed the legislation could pass Congress Wednesday, which allow the government to keep borrowing to meet its obligations.

(Senator Susan Collins), a Republican who has led efforts to broker a compromise said “I hope that we are nearing the end of this ordeal, this impasse which never should have happened in the first place".

On Thursday, the economy of the United state was to sail into uncharted waters where the Treasury would no longer be able to borrow more to meet its obligations and avert a devastating debt default.

The only way to avert this peril, which could send global markets into turmoil and threaten another recession, would be for Congress to agree to raise the US government’s $16.7 trillion debt ceiling.

Senate leaders hammered out their compromise after previous efforts in the Republican-led House collapsed in chaos Tuesday.

Senator Kelly Ayotte , a Republican said “The American people are tired of where we are”. “They’re tired of the brinksmanship, and so they want us to get this resolved now for them — today, hopefully.”

Republican aides said it remained unclear exactly how the deal would navigate its way through the two chambers, but several lawmakers suggested the House would act first.

If it is approved there, the deal would return to the Senate, where lawmakers hope to rapidly pass it into law.

Republican Senators (Ted Cruz and Rand Paul), two vocal opponents to the deal, said they would not attempt to delay it further.

“I have no objection to the timing of this vote,” Cruz told reporters.

House conservatives backed by the Tea Party movement have thus far thwarted votes on the debt ceiling and on passing a budget, demanding concessions from Obama.

Obama’s Democrats have refused to allow Republicans to hold those issues to “ransom” with moves to cut spending or dismantle the president’s landmark health insurance reform.

But the Senate deal includes a mechanism that forces lawmakers into entering long-term budget negotiations, with recommendations due by December 13.

The stand-off forced the federal government of the US into a partial shutdown from October 1, and if it continues it would put the United States in a position where it might not be able to pay its debts.

Markets have been watching the mess carefully, but have not panicked, most traders assuming that Washington will scrape together a deal before triggering global financial calamity.

US stocks surged as soon as reports began coming out from the Senate on the prospective deal.

At the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 177 points, or 1.2 percent, to 15,345.45, while the S&P 500 added 42 points, or 1.2 percent, to 1,717.93 at 1:00pm ( 1700 GMT).

The Fitch ratings agency had underlined the seriousness of the situation by putting the US government’s AAA credit rating on a downgrade warning, and European markets slid in morning trade.

The Senate has a Democratic majority and would back a straight vote to raise the debt ceiling.

The remaining hurdle is the House, where Republican Speaker John Boehner has proved unable to control his restive caucus.

With the Tea Party to his right insisting on standing firm, Boehner has thus far proved unwilling to use minority Democratic votes to pass even an interim budget or a temporary debt-ceiling hike.

On Tuesday, House Republicans floated a plan broadly similar to the Senate’s, but which would have constrained aspects of so-called Obamacare and removed the administration’s ability to use “extraordinary measures” to temporarily pay obligations beyond a debt ceiling.

It stood no chance of passing the Senate.

Republican Representative (Scott Rigell) said on Wednesday that he expected Boehner would eventually break with the hardliners and call a vote.

“I am absolutely confident of this. The speaker will do whatever is required to preserve the United State of America's credit rating and I will support him in that effort,” he told C-Span.

Major world powers have been left looking on in dismay, unable to do anything to protect their own economic interests, with many deeply invested in US Treasuries — hitherto seen as a safe haven.

China and Japan, which between them hold $2.4 trillion in US Treasuries, have expressed alarmed and annoyance.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Liverpool's Coutinho, Johnson, Allen And Cissokho Set To Return To Training by luvola(op): 3:04pm On Oct 16, 2013
Liverpool have been offered a timely boost to their Champions League charge.
Boss Brendan Rodgers has been given the perfect pick-me-up to the Reds' growing top-four hopes with the return of four key players to first team action.
England star Glen Johnson, Brazilian Philippe Coutinho, new signing Aly Cissokho and Wales midfielder Joe Allen are all due back in training this week as the Reds prepare for a two-month Premier League programme that will define their ambition for the rest of the season.
Samba star Coutinho is seen as a crucial component in Liverpool’s system, and he is set for an early return after successfully undergoing surgery on a shoulder he damaged against Swansea in mid-September.
Likewise Johnson, who is already back in training, after being sidelined since limping out of the win over Manchester United at the start of last month.
The return of the influential duo couldn’t be better timed, with a tough run of games including Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham, City and Chelsea to come before the New Year.
All four players could even be vying for selection for this weekend’s visit to Newcastle, with Johnson and Cissokho back on the training ground and Coutinho well ahead of schedule.

Allen is eager for a return after picking up an hamstring injury in August.
He said: “I’m almost there. The plan is a good few days [training] leading up to Newcastle and hopefully I’ll be available.”
France international Cissokho, a season-long loanee from Spanish side Valencia, lasted just 10 minutes of his home debut in the League Cup win over Notts County after picking up an ankle injury.
Rodgers confirned he is now ready to make an impact, along with the others.
“Aly has trained and he should be fine and fit for the Newcastle game, and likewise Joe. Glen’s out on the field and hopefully after the international break he’ll be ready to come back,” he said.
Coutinho is quite possibly the most important player though, as Liverpool look to maintain the flying start which has taken them to the top of the table.
The Brazilian said this week: “The surgery was a success, and I’ll be back soon.”

Politics › ASUU Leaders Receive Death Threats by luvola(op): 5:46pm On Oct 14, 2013
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) leaders complain of receiving death threats by phone messages and start to go underground for fear of their lives.

This was made known in a statement titled “ASUU strike: Union leaders go underground” made by ASUU, University of Ibadan (UI) chapter, signed by Dr Olusegun Ajiboye. According to the claims, union leaders are being tailed by unknown elements suspected to be security agents involved by the Federal Government.
The extract from the statement reads as follows:
“Apart from the issue of finance (referring to withdrawn salaries) ASUU leaders are now being trailed all over the place. Majority of our union leaders have now gone underground while many have their telephone lines bugged. Some are now living in fear for their lives.

“The position of ASUU is that Nigeria is a democratic country and citizens are guaranteed freedom of association. Members of the union are apprehensive for the lives of their leaders. We urge the government to leave our leaders alone.”
Ajiboye urged the Federal Government to focus on implementing the 2009 agreement, which was reached with the Union.
He also asked Inspector Mohammed Abubakar, General of Police, to take care of the lives of ASUU leaders.

According to new reports, former Niger Delta militant and current leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, Asari Dokubo, is now a proud owner of a university in Benin Republic...

The leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, NDPVF, Muhajid Asari-Dokubo has joined the swelling rank of private university proprietors with his establishment of a university in the neighbouring Republic of Benin.

Mr. Asari-Dokubo, who already owns a soccer academy in the West African country and another one in Abuja, said the university, which will be known as King Amachree African University, KAAU, had already been accredited to commence degree programmes beginning September 2014.

In an interview in Abuja ,he said that the proposed university, named after his ancestor, was a product of his two existing institutions in Benin Republic, namely King Amachree Automobile/ICT Royal Academy and King Amachree Arts Academy. Both of them, he added, currently award Diploma to their students.

Mr. Asari-Dokubo said he chose to establish the institutions in Benin Republic because he does not only live there, but has adopted it as his country.

“What we have now, we are awarding only diploma now. “By next September, Insha Allah, the university will start,” Mr. Asari-Dokubo, who dropped out of University of Calabar, he said.
“For now we have King Amachree Automobile/ICT Royal Academy and King Amachree Arts Academy. Two of them were merged. We have merged the two of them into king Amachree African University.

“King Amachree is my great ancestor. He was king of the Kingdom of new Calabar.”
On his soccer academy, the 50 year old Mr. Asari-Dokubo, an indigene of Rivers State, who refused to be tagged a former militant, said it was established to train the youth in soccer free of charge.
“We plan to engage the youths. It is free. We have a soccer academy in Abuja and we have another one in Republic of Benin,” he said.

More Nigerians are forced to go to Benin Republic, Ghana, Togo and other neigbhouring countries to acquire education due to the incessant labour disputes and industrial actions within the Nigerian university system as well as the deplorable state of education in the country.
Currently, students of both the federal and state universities in Nigeria are at home due to the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, over the refusal of the Federal Government to honour its 2009 agreement with the union.

Other unions within the education sector, including the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, have also embarked on solidarity strike while the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, and Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, are reportedly on the verge of doing towing that path.
Students of the over 50 private universities in Nigeria, whose fees can only be afforded the rich, are however, in session.

Mr. Asari-Dokubo is, like former Niger Delta militants enjoying massive patronage from the current administration, believe to be very wealthy but his source of income is largely unknown.

There were speculation he made his fortune stealing crude oil in the Niger Delta. But he denied engaging in such practices, he said he had never been part of any act capable of endangering the Delta.
