The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Zone D (Southwest) yesterday distrupted the ACTIVITIES marking the 53rd celebration of the independence anniversary in Ibadan, Oyo State. The protesters blocked the major roads in parts of the state calling on the striking university lecturers and the Federal Government to resolve their face-off. The protest started at about 9:30 am and marched through Agodi-Gate, Agbowo, Mokola round-about, Total Garden and stopped at the Iwo-Road inter-change. Numbering over one thousand (1000) , they complained among other things, the underfunding of the education sector and chanted anti-government slogans, accusing the Federal Government of lackadaisical attitude towards education. The security agents kept watch over them to ensure that the protest did not go out of control. The angry students through their leader, Mr Monsuru Adeyemo asserted, “There is urgent need to save the education sector in Nigeria from total collapse from claws of capitalist ruling elites. “As a result of poor government funding, in spite of stupendous wealth of the country, Nigeria’s public education, from primary to tertiary levels is bedeviled with inadequate facilities for learning , proper teaching and research. “Hostel facilities in the few schools where they still exist are insufficient and dilapidated , that is why morethan 10 million Nigerian children are out of school. ”Only just this year (2013), about 1.7 million candidates sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and from the available space in all the universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in the country only less than 29 per cent of the total candidates will be admitted, thus leaving out over 1.2 million candidates. “We have to actively join the struggle to force the Government to implement the agreement with all unions so that tertiary institutions can be reopened. It will mean better funding of education and a great relief to overburdened students if this agreement is fully implemented” source : http://www.nairacity..com/2013/10/nans-disrupts-independence-anniversary.html culled and edited from http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/nans-disrupts-independence-anniversary-ibadan/ |
River state GOVERNOR Chibuike Amaechi has again lashed out at some of the alleged actions of the Police in the state, describing them as an attempt to turn Rivers into a military state by the security agency. The governor asserted this yesterday, at a ceremony at Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt, to mark the 53rd anniversary of the country’s independence, also urged the people of Rivers to join forces with the state government to resist the move. He recalled how the Police dispersed the newly recruited 13,000 teachers by the state government at the Liberation Stadium over unfounded excuse that they were hired to protest against President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. It would be recalled that the newly recruited teachers were invited by the state Ministry of Education to collect their posting letters before they were dispersed by the Police command in the state. The governor said all measures should be taken to thwart attempts by those plotting to disrupt the flow of democracy in the state. Governor Amaechi further assured that his administration would continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to the state, adding that he would not compromise on the standard of education in the state. He said “ The People must come together to chase away those who want to turn Rivers State into a military state. “ The state is identified by an elected government and we must identify with a civilian government”. source : http://www.nairacity..com/2013/10/amaechi-alleges-attempt-by-police-to.html |

It has been morethan 40 days and still counting and our beloved/dearest OJB is still in India yet to undergo kidney surgery in India. Reports from a reliable source suggests that the operation was delayed because OJB needs to undergo several pre-transplant treatment before the main surgery. The source however revealed that the pre-transplant treatments have now been completed and OJB is expected to go ahead with the main surgery in a few days. source 1 : http://www.nairacity..com/2013/10/producer-and-singer-ojb-yet-to-undergo.html

Despite the several warning strikes to press home their demands to no avail, the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria has declared an indefinite strike action from 1st of October 1, 2013. Dr Jibril Abdullahi (The president of the association) who spoke with reporters today in Kano said the decision of the association to embark on strike though painful, is as a result of the inability of the Federal Government to meet its demands. The demand of the Resident Doctors include the following: * That the payment of the outstanding salaries owed to House Officers has been cash backed and would be effected within the second week of September; * Federal Ministry of Health (FMH) would direct the various hospitals for the preparation of payment vouchers accordingly; and that * The Budget of year 2014 should aptly capture and address the challenges currently experienced in the implementation of IPPIS in the sector. source : http://www.nairacity..com/2013/10/oct-1st-gift-resident-doctors-begin.html

It was learnt at the weekend that the President risks further isolation of some group of elected public officers of some state governors unless President Goodluck Jonathan issues an urgent directive to the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to release funds due to the 36 states. State governors, according to source are angry with the Federal Government over the non-payment of their three months’ allocations in full by the Finance Ministry. Although all the governors in the country are not pleased with this financial situation, only seven of them, who are with the breakaway faction of the ruling People’s Democratic Party, have openly cried out, saying their governments are experiencing financial incapacitation. However, PDP governors still loyal to Jonathan and the Bamanga Tukur-led faction have opted to “suffer in silence” over the withheld funds, believing that the situation would be addressed with the urgency it deserves. They have also chosen to tolerate the situation so as not to be seen as disloyal to the President and the party. A northern governor, whose state has virtually been grounded as a result of inadequate funds to meet the obligations of his administration, confirmed that most “of us are quite upset over the financial distress imposed on us by the Federal Government.” Jonathan and Okonjo-Iweala The governor, who is one of the staunchest supporters of Jonathan and who insisted on speaking in confidence, said: “If urgent steps were not taken by the Presidency to put an end to the emerging financial crisis in the states, more governors would be forced to distance themselves from Aso Rock Villa and the Finance Minister. “We are afraid that if the current situation, which we believe is artificially created so as to punish some states and their governors is not stopped, many governors would be left with no option than to seek redress. “It is difficult for the Finance Minister to convince us that after generating N1.05 trillion in July this year, a figure that was well over the projection by government for the month, states could not be paid their full allocations for the month. “As we speak, we have not been paid for August and September while our people are anxiously looking up to us as governors to give them dividends of democracy through provision of life-changing projects. “In almost all the states, the salaries and emoluments of civil and public servants have not been paid while contractors are on edge waiting to do battle with the governors. “If we may ask, where has all the money gone since Okonjo-Iweala keeps insisting that the economy is robust and kicking?”. Questions Another governor from the South, who narrated the situation in his state to Sunday Vanguard, noted that he would have to stay away from his state for as long as the Federation Allocations were withheld so as not to run into trouble with contractors. The governor said, “The financial position is so bad that I have to avoid going to my office daily because contractors are waiting for me. I have no genuine excuse to give since they won’t believe that for the past three months we have not been given our full remittances by the centre. “This is what we have been exposed to by the Federal Government even with increased revenue confirmed by the Central Bank of Nigeria accruing to the purse of the government. “Nigerians should be more vigilant by asking the Finance Minister where our money is being kept. Let them tell Nigerians what happened to the balance of the N1.05 trillion that accrued to Nigeria after N792billion was shared to states for July. “We have made the point that it is either they are hiding our money for 2015 elections or they are deliberately manipulating the economy to give Nigerians the impression that all is well when the nation is broke.” But, last Thursday,Mr Samuel Otorms (the Minister of State for Trade and Investment) had opined last Thursday that the nation’s economy making progress on all fronts and very sound. Mr Otorms asked Nigerians to ignore those in the ‘New PDP’, who allege that something is wrong with the economy but carefully avoided saying why monthly allocations had not been remitted in full to states by the Federal Government. The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), on Saturday announced that it has resolved to resume its suspended nationwide strike from next week, following the failure of the federal government to fulfill its agreement with the union. The lecturers had, on July 17, suspended its weeks-old strike after the intervention of federal lawmakers in its negotiation with the federal government. In a communique released after the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union met for her 75th Meeting at the Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger State, the National Publicity Secretary of the union, Chirman Clement Selchum, said the lecturers will resume the suspended strike on October 4. “That in view of the continued insincerity of Government to honour the agreement reached with ASUP, NEC resolves that the union will resume the suspended strike with effect from October 4, 2013,” the communique read. “NEC sincerely appreciates the good people of Nigeria and all other stakeholders in the education sector for their sustained support in its struggles to save the polytechnic education from total collapse in Nigeria.” The lecturers also lamented the decaying standard of polytechnic education and solicited the assistance of the National Assembly, parents, and other notable groups to assist in revamping polytechnic education in Nigeria. They passed a vote of no confidence on the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and called for the immediate establishment of a National Polytechnics Commission (NPC) to proactively cater for the needs of the sector. Education in Nigeria has been hit with different crises since July. The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has since July 1 declared a strike action over the failure of the federal government to honour an agreement reached with the union in 2009. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has also declared it will go on a nationwide strike should the government and ASUU fail to reach a compromise by October 11. source : http://www.nairacity..com/2013/09/asup-set-to-resume-strike-october-4.html culled from : http://telegraphng.com/2013/09/asup-resume-strike-october-4/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

San Francisco – A United Airlines flight made an emergency landing in Boise, Idaho after its pilot suffered a mid-air heart attack from which he later died, an Airline spokesperson said on Friday. United flight 1603 was en-route from Houston, Texas to Seattle, Washington when the incident occurred. The Boeing 737 landed safely in Boise where the pilot was taken to hospital. The plane, which was carrying 167 passengers and crew, continued to its scheduled destination several hours later, after a replacement pilot was found. “I am sad to confirm that our co-worker passed away last night. Our thoughts are with his family at this time,” United representative Christen David said in an email on Friday source : http://nairacity..com/2013/09/pilot-suffers-heart-attack-makes.html culled from http://www.vanguardngr.com |

A lose at the stadium of light will spell a doom for the red. We can't afford to lose this one since either arsenal, totthenham or chelsea will drop point tomorrow , bredren rodger should get its act together and win this match for us. Our last three matches performance has been awful and we can't afford to lose this match at d stadium of light. |
Di Canio was axed last week 24 hours after the 3-0 defeat to West Brom left the Wearside club rooted to the bottom of the table. Sunderland have just one point from their first five league outings and Ball will be hoping to boost his chances of landing the manager's job on a permanent basis with a positive result against Liverpool. Liverpool travel to Wearside aiming to get back to winning ways after two straight defeats to Southampton in the Premier League and The gloss to Liverpool's impressive start to the season has been taken off in the last few weeks and Brendan Rodgers will be keen to see them get back to winning ways at the Stadium of Light as they strive to keep pace with the leading pack. Kevin Ball won't let Sunderland down because he is a good coach. I played against him a million times and what he will give them is fire and confidence and I wouldn't be surprised to see Lee Cattermole come back in because he is a Kevin Ball-type player who will get stuck in and win tackles. Liverpool have had shocking defeats to Southampton and Man United this week. They shouldn't be getting beaten at home by Saints and then they got knocked out by Man United's B team in the Capital One Cup. It was United's reserves - if they picked the best team, only Wayne Rooney and David de Gea would get in it - against Liverpool's strongest side, so for them to lose was massively disappointing. Luis Suarez has got another game under his belt, though, and I would expect Liverpool to win this game. Ball will have his players ready, but Liverpool should have too much class. culled from : http://www1.skysports.com/football/live/match/295715/preview source : http://www.nairacity..com/2013/09/sunderland-vs-liverpool-on-sunday-sept.html My take on this match : bredren rodger should not start that selfish player called daniel sturridge because he killed the game against manchester united. Liverpool is really paying the price for the injuiry blow of their playmaker countinho as ever since he limped out of the field against swansea city , the reds has been on a losing situation. If bredren rodgers love himself , he should n't start that selfish sturridge and flop handerson. |
