And what attracted Sky to the UK?

When Maggie became prime minister, the British economy was in shambles with high inflation, restive unions and state owned companies that were bleeding the country dry. It was simply living off past glory.

There was even a time before she became prime minister, the British economy was briefly under the hands of the IMF. That's how low it sank.

Under Thatcher, she embarked on a number of economic reforms which are now common place such as privatization, lowered job destroying personal and company taxes to pragmatic levels and so much more.

Her reforms attracted investors in droves and also proved to be a job creating machine.

When Tony Blair won the election in 1996 or 1997, the Times or is Economist front cover said the real winner was Thatcher. Labour was now center left promising to adhere to the reforms she implemented.

Minorities are still sour with her become she was an til immigration. It however doesn't change the fact that her reforms inadvertantly proved a boon to migrants for the jobs it created.

Britain is the best place for social mobility for migrants in the EU.

Immigrants are desperate to cross from France to Britain because better opportunities awaits them in Britain.

You may not like her like many Britons or minorities but they are all beneficiaries of the reforms she implemented.

The lady by the way is not for turning
Like i said she helped the economy
Also rupert murdoch was british i.e the founder of sky
And like i said earlier she did a fantastic job with the economy but she was never a sports fan

I really don't know much about what you wrote up there but I'm talking about the economic reforms she introduced which has lured investors to the UK and eventually into English football.

4 of the top 6 English clubs are majority or if not fully foreign owned
Sky money built the behemoth u call the "premier league" and until the early 00's ALL the club owners were english
Yes maggie did well for the economy but sport esp football was the least of her concerns infact she suggested that fans should wear i.ds to enter stadiums
Abrahomvich success with chelsea brought the boom of foreign owners

Interesting Germany has a higher population than Britain yet does not match them.

Italy and France have about the same population but each can barely count 4 clubs worthy of the championship.

Margaret Thatchers economic reforms have left a long lasting mark even in football
Maggie's what?? grin
Maggie destroyed english football wen SHE not uefa or fifa or even the notriously brownosing FA called for ALL english clubs to be banned after heysel
The hillsborough tragedy brought about the all seater stadiums u see today and that was due to the taylor committee not Thatcher.
Also the english league has the finance but in football terms it's behind serie A and La liga

Travel › Re: Gburugburu: My Trip To Enugu By Deji Yesufu by LZAA: 4:33pm On Dec 13, 2018
VBCampaign:
Concluded:

One high point of my stay in Enugu is in discovering the phenomenon called Gburugburu. Gburugburu is the nick name of the present Governor of Enugu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. Gburugburu means “everywhere”. I understand it is a name of a chieftaincy title that he holds but it portrays in real fact the kind of person that he is. Ugwuanyi is a big fellow with a big heart. He is generally regarded as a “performing” Governor. Enugu State, since 1999, has been led by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The party has succeeded in zoning out the governorship seat to the three Senatorial zones in the city. Ugwuanyi is from the northern senatorial zone, Nsukka. In spite of the work he has done in Enugu, he has also helped to improve the infrastructures in Nsukka.

John took me to Nsukka for a burial. It was a delight driving from the town of Opi to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, on a road that Ugwuanyi had only recently built. The commercial aspect of that city had opened up a great deal; making it easy for transporters coming from the North and Benue State, to connect through the city unto Port Harcourt.

Then there is the night life of Enugu city. I was told that Enugu is only second to Owerri (Imo State) in night party ridding. Hotel business is a booming business in Enugu. In fact there are seasons that hotels are fully booked in the city. Enugu folks love life and they live it to the fullest. There is very little crime and the people are very hardworking. There is also the booming estate business in the city.

I personally have not seen as many estates anywhere else as I saw in Enugu. It seems to me that everyone is either building a house or has built a house in that city. The city is a massive construction site. John told me that some two to three years ago, people of Eastern origin suddenly awoke to the consciousness of building their own region. So even though they do not live in these houses, except at Christmas, everyone owns a house back home in Enugu.

My book had been written around a central theme that Nigeria is better together than divided. I saw this theme play out in practical terms while I was in Enugu. Not for once was I discriminated against because I was Yoruba. In fact the very moment anyone learnt I was a visitor, everyone made efforts to ensure that I was most at home in the city.

At the Centre for Memories, were I gave my first book reading on Saturday 3rd, November, I was guest to Prof. Rena Okonkwo. She is a retired Professor of History from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She did a brief review of my book with the guests and then I was invited to speak to them. Ms. Adachukwu Onwudiwe and Ms. Florence Ugwu of the Crater Library and Publishers, coordinated everything around my literary works in the city. I remain greatly indebted to the duo.

On Saturday, 10th of November, I was guest of the Enugu Literary Society at Radio Nigeria, Enugu. Mr. Ken Ike, the Zonal Director of Radio Nigeria Enugu, was my host. He led me through a series of questions and answers on my book, as I sat before scores of guests who had come to the program that evening.

The event that evening is probably one that I would never forget. The Enugu Literary Society is a forum that holds every second Saturday of each month at the Radio Nigeria and it has writers come to talk about their books. They have students from Secondary Schools, who are interested in Literature, come also to both talk about their own writings and to listen to published writers. As I sat and watched these young people talk and ask questions, I knew that Eastern Nigeria was already sowing seeds of greatness for its future. Other regions of this country have a lot to imitate from them.

My trip to Enugu had come within a few days of my annual leave. It is the best holidays I have ever taken in my life. Enugu is a city you would want to visit or even live in. What I saw in that city is a pointer to a great future that awaits Eastern Nigeria and the whole country in the days to come. There is a sense in it that my trip to Enugu was a kind of gburugburu around Eastern Nigeria – it took me everywhere I never dreamt I would go to in that region of this country.

A Nigerian fraudster who claimed his sister and nephew died in the Grenfell Tower fire to secure accommodation and more than £40,000, has been convicted of fraud in the U.K.
.
.
Abolaji Onafuye, 54, claimed the cash after telling volunteers he was related to two real victims of the fire. He was put up in a hotel for nearly a year before being moved to a flat. .
.
The convict denied fraud, but was convicted at Isleworth Crown Court of two counts of frauds by false representation. He is due to be sentenced on 18 December. .
.
The 14 June 2017 fire in Kensington, killed 72 people. Prosecutor Michael Phillips, said: "Abolaji Onafuye had no connections to the Grenfell Tower tragedy but saw an opportunity to benefit himself, both financially and with accommodation. .
.
Our prosecution was able to prove he had repeatedly and intentionally lied and that his post-arrest story that it had all been an innocent mistake was just an attempt to escape the consequences of his cruel deception."

Music/Radio › Re: Osayimwen Osahon George: Don't Watch Blue Films Just Watch Nigerian Music Videos by LZAA: 2:15am On Dec 12, 2018
uche87:
The best way to be sexually aroused nowadays is not really by watching adult films. All you need to do is pay attention to the trending secular songs which are virtually wherever you go.

The sounds and visuals are potent enough to resurrect a manhood which has been flaccid from inception. You will see the best quality of high definition videos flashing the well-exposed waists, hips, boobs and bums of young ladies in your face.

As we have unsound music videos, so also we have second-rate lyrics which are worse than nursery rhymes designed to enhance the learning ability of kids. The mediocrity of the so-called talented heads is laced with melodious beats and instrumentals to easily penetrate the minds of unsuspecting listeners.

It’s like the key to dropping a hit song in Nigeria is by using unmeaning, silly and unintelligible lyrics that portray and glorify s*x, drugs, internet scam, thuggery, promiscuity, alcoholism, civil disobedience and unfounded wealth. These are the common vices the youths easily identify with and it gives the brand of the artistes wide acceptance. The music industry has continued to deteriorate that good profane music is beginning to become extinct except you want to consider the religious songs.

For a male artiste to appeal to the audience, he has to portray himself as a slave master who manipulates the hottest ladies at will and for that female artiste to be given attention, she has to project herself as a sex idol that can win the heart of any man who sights her. Wizkid and Tiwa Savage fit perfectly into this description.

Music has continued to adversely shape our perception of life in Nigeria. It has helped in making abnormal things normal and this can be traced to the problem of globalization. Through this, foreign culture, tradition and behaviours have been imbibed to show exposure and class on the path of the performers. When I was growing up, it was a big shame to pay for sex. Men who patronize prostitutes did it with utmost secrecy to save their reputation. Today, sleeping with a prostitute has become a competitive sport which could attract a gold medal. This might not be far from the way some vulgar celebrities like Olamide, the late Da Grin, Reminisce, Lil Kesh and others have admitted to sleeping with hookers popularly regarded as "Oloshos".

I remember the popular song which says " Bata re adun koko ka, ti o ba kawe re, bata re a dun koko ka" meaning that "You will excel in life if you are educated". This song added real value to our lives and helped improve our mentality towards personal development. Today, good and inspirational lyrics have been replaced with songs that celebrate internet fraud and inexplicable wealth. Songs that demean women and reduce them to mere commodities which could be acquired in the market places if their prices are triggered dominate the airwaves.

Music video directors now hire video vixens that perform sexual acts painstakingly to impress their paymasters while the Hot audience feed their lust. They now pay millions of naira to enhance their bodies through cosmetic surgeries to make their body parts more attractive and intoxicating.
The leadership of the Nigerian Customs Service has been constantly intercepting container loads of Tramadol worth billions of naira. A society which tolerates and applauds songs like ‘Codeine Diet’ and ‘Science Student’ by Olamide shouldn't be shocked about the crisis of hard drugs as vulnerable people might think getting high is the only way to experience Utopia.

I remember how the Ibale tradition in Yorubaland which encouraged women to remain virgins till they get married instilled discipline and decency among female folks. I also remember how single mothers were called 'Adelebo'. The latter sounded like the stigmatization of women involved in failed relationships or broken marriages but it helped us in maintaining sanity in the marital institution. Today, being a 'baby mama' to a wealthy person is bigger and more enviable than working at Shell or Chevron. Musicians now indiscriminately sleep with young ladies unprotected and consequently impregnate them.

Legendary musician, Innocent ‘2Baba’ Idibia once boasted in his song, ‘Enter The Place’ about his virility although he later regretted his actions after having 7 kids from three different women at a young age. Davido even went as far as featuring his two baby mamas, their children and also his reigning girlfriend, Chioma in his ‘Wonder Woman’ music video. The 26-year old is also under pressure to accept another child from an Ibadan-based lady he reportedly had a one-night stand with.

With the advent of social media today and the desperate quest of multinational companies to make money at all costs, some of these celebrities who are outright bad examples in the society are now paraded as mentors under the banner of ambassadorial roles with cooked up successes stories that mislead the younger generation.

In all sincerity, these songs which are produced with hot beats and attractive choruses easily captivate the minds of the younger generation; mostly taking them unaware. These poisonous contents unconsciously pollute their minds and they later see life from the corrupted lenses of these celebrities. Music is powerful and often times underrated. One of the purposes of music is to express and modulate emotions. We use it to soothe, psych up, woo, enrage, sadden and cheer each other, or ourselves.

The societal decay is so prevalent that it appears any artiste making good songs with meaningful lyrics is unserious about his musical career.

One wonders how the promising and intelligent rapper, Skales of the defunct music record label, Empire Mates Entertainment retrogressed from the crooner of the inspirational song "Heading For A Grammy" to a questionable song like "Booty Language". The popular excuse is that he is only producing what the society wants to consume as that is the only way to make good and quick money.

Most youths now want to get rich quick and acquire belongings that will attract numerous girls to warm their beds with ease. Women have been reduced to fortune-hunting elements that generously spread their legs at the sight or smell of Naira notes.

Watching Nigerian music videos have boosted the sexual fantasies of men who wish they could have replicas of the video vixens to sleep with them. It’s even worse for married men who are given clues of what their aging wives aren’t giving them. Morality and shame have been thrown into the dustbins with ladies now advocating on social media for long sexual sessions. They have even tagged some men "one minute or Indomie men". Who else has noticed sex drugs advertorials have taken over Instagram with popular pages showcasing nothing less than three brands of sex enhancers per day? The companies producing and marketing these drugs have become so bold that they hire young ladies who make sultry appearances in short videos to talk raw in attestation to the efficacy of the drugs. Reports have it that men are patronizing these start-ups massively in the bid to satisfy the women in their lives in the ‘other room’.

These are signs of insanity and absurdity being normalized by the young folks who are supposed to be the future of the country. The destiny of 67 million youths appears to be at stake with the ailment of cancerous music eating up the audience towards the destruction of their psyche.

Music is deeper than how it sounds and its clandestine effects on the lives of human beings can’t be overemphasized.

Scientists have proved that sound affects our bodies; sound affects us physiologically in very powerful ways. This is because hearing is our primary warning sense. A sudden sound will start a process. It releases cortisol (steroid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex), it increases your heart rate, and it changes your breathing.

Music can improve mood, increase intelligence, enhance learning and concentration, and ward off the effects of brain aging. This is why one needs to be careful about the musical contents he/she consumes consciously and unconsciously.

Also, according to an entertainment writer, Ronald Urbina - music is the reflection of the society. The fact that music reflects the community is well-known for more than a century. This is why the investigation of tribes that lived in the past is conducted through exploration of their way of life, which includes music. People like to express their state of being through songs.

The way a Nigerian will dance to bad music in the heat of the moment is the same way he will show indifference about poor infrastructural facilities, bad government policies, corruption, moral decadence and other forms of societal challenges.

This is who we are in Nigeria, we just don’t care. We suffer and smile. We easily overlook budding challenges until they become insurmountable. Those bad musical contents are reflections of us no matter how much we deny it.

Crime › Re: Woman Stabs Lagos Food Seller For Refusing To Sell To Her On Credit (photo) by LZAA: 11:51am On Dec 11, 2018
dabrin:
A woman has been arrested for stabbing a food seller because she refused to sell food to her on credit in Lagos.

The 47-year-old suspect, named Aminat Ayileri, is a tailor who is struggling to make ends meet. As a result, she frequently bought food on credit from a food seller in Ejigbo, named Abiodun Ishola.

Aminat had reportedly racked up a debt of N8,000 overtime.

When she went to ask Abiodun to sell food to her again, Abiodun refused and asked her to pay up her debts before she will get food. That did not go down well with Aminat and she attacked Abiodun and stabbed her close to the right eye.

Aminat was charged before the Ejigbo Magistrates Court for assault where she pleaded not guilty before the Court.

Aminat was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. She was remanded in prison custody pending when she will perfect her bail condition.

The matter was adjourned till 9th January, 2018.

Igbos In Lagos State: My Experience, By Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe

Lagos State belongs as much to the ethnic Igbo as to the Yoruba, Ijaw, Hausa, Fulani, Efik, Idoma, Urhobo, Itshekiri, Edo, and so on who live in it, pay tax, identify with it, and settle in it. That compact was made the moment Nigeria became a single nation, and a successor power to the old principalities who were subdued and who ceded their sovereignty for the new commonwealth of Nigeria.

It was pragmatic. The Igbo had the skill and the industry, and Lagos was the seat of the Federal Government of Nigeria and its major port. The Igbo have lived in Lagos since the 15th century when the Aro and other Igbo first settled in good number in a place we now call “Oyingbo” in the era of Benin and the Portuguese trade.

The arrival of Dr. Namdi Azikiwe to Lagos in 1937 from Accra after his studies in the United States, stimulated the political and cultural environment of Lagos as no other has before or after him. Zik literally resurrected the wizard of Kirsten hall from political death. Zik represented Lagos in the western house. The NCNC was the power in Lagos , and not the Action Group. The Igbo were prominent in the governance of Lagos in the Lagos City Hall.

The institutional development of Lagos – the railways, the ports and ship yards; the education and research facilities; the Banking and Commodities Exchange, the development of towns like Yaba, Surulere, Ebutta-Metta, Festac Town, Victoria Island, and now increasing the Ajah-Lekki axis, and of course, the ghettoes along the Orile-Badagry axis, have profound Igbo imprimatur. The circulation of the image of Lagos is to date best reflected in the cosmopolitan Igbo imagination of one of the greatest African writers of the 20th century, Cyprian Ekwensi, a thorough Lagosian if there was any. Igbo have built industries in Lagos and have been drivers of commerce and exchange.

Interestingly, I was born at plot number 8, Okoya Street , Idumagbo- Lagos, while the Ojukwu families were residing at number one to three on the same street. I grew up to know the father of Odumegwu Ojukwu. Chimbizie and Azuka grew up with us on the same street. Even the Chibeze small parking space at the end of Okoya Street is called Ojukwu. I later attended St. Patrick Primary School , Idumagbo, where I had very amiable classmates of Igbo origin in the persons of Azubike Ezenwa and Damian, Ihekuna, both now professors and doctors of today. They were brilliant, resourceful and friendly.

When we were playing bamboo and Tene Felele at Orikoriko at Onola playing ground, the Igbo participated actively. In the area of sports, school football and athletes, Igbo were dominant at Kings College, St. Gregory school, St. Finbars, Akoka, Igbobi College and Ahmadiyya College, Agege. Such boys, Njokwu, George Amu, Stephen Keshi, Henry Nwosu, Patrick Noquapor, Peter Anieke and Sammy Opone were dominant on the field of football, while Asiodu, Empire Kanu were prominent on the field of athletics.

Anytime we went to watch football match at Onikan stadium, my darling team, Stationery Stores and our adversary team I hated most was the E. C. N, where the centre forward, Paul Hamilton, the National Team, Fabian the captain who bit the dust. Our greatest captain was Duru, Oduah Onyenrekwa, Onyeador Onyeali and Opel, the greatest outside right Nigeria ever had, Cyril Azuluka. So, during my early life at primary school, the Igbo were always there and delightful to watch, both in athletes and on the football field.

When I listened to radio at that time, both the commentary and drama series, the Igbo were there for you. The likes of Chris Ndaguba, Ernest Okwonkwo, Ralph Okpara ‘Alawo Sekiseki the traveler’. The episode will end with – The script was written by Ralph Okpara and edited by Yemi Lijadu.

Anytime I visited where I was born today in Idumagbo at Lagos Island , the entire place is covered by Igbo traders in their thousands. They were never troublesome but decent and accommodating. They have virtually taken over all properties of the indigenes. They succeeded in developing all our properties, married to most of our children even from the royal families. There is no single house you will visit without an Igbo man selling wares there.

So, who is saying something else? Only the strangers in our midst will not notice participation of economic development in our state by the Igbos. Most houses and shops in Lagos Island have been purchased, developed and occupied by the Igbos. The value of their investments in Lagos Island alone is in trillions of naira.

Instead of deporting the Igbos, whose contributions to the development of Lagos state are immensurable, you must keep on praising and encouraging them to keep on developing Lagos State .

As naive and foolish as you are, you think yourself as full CATHOLIC.. Then you most really be stupid for throwing hurtful words at an Ordained Man of God

Who are you to judge him, and Ordained Priest for that matter

I find your comment hurtful the most becox you called yourself a CATHOLIC MEMBER, but yet, your behavior and words says the opposite

The Judgement is GOD'S

I know who i am and when it comes to the criticism of Spiritual leaders I never involves myself with it, and I except you to do the same
