Primate E. O. Akeju of New Holy Messiah Church in Ilasamaja, Lagos state on Wednesday announced a set of 32 prophecies wherein he stated that God revealed to him that former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, will emerge as Nigeria’s next president.

Prince Tony Momoh, a former Minister of information and a national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has given reasons why it will be difficult for Igbos to attain the presidency in Nigeria, citing disunity and their preference for supporting the candidates with huge financial chests during election.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with DAILY INDEPENDENT on why it has been difficult for the Igbos to produce a president since 1999, Momoh said one of the problems facing the Igbo is their inability to be united and queue behind one single candidate for presidential election.
He gave an instance of what happened in 2003 when the late Chuba Okadigbo, who was President Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate in the 2003 presidential election, visited Igbo leaders in Lagos and solicited their support. According to him, the Igbo leaders who had earlier collected N6m from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) asked them to bring N6m before they can give their support to Okadigbo, who is one of them.

“The fact is the Igbos have been in a difficult place since the civil war. They started from scratch after the civil war and they had to reestablish themselves in the Nigerian polity and they had to start moving up slowly in the institution. Many of them their senior people in the Army were no longer there but they have moved in the Army to the highest level, even to the level of Chief of Army Staff” .
“The Igbos are a wonderful people. For instance, at the end of the war, inspite of what you’ve had, they gave you 20 pounds. Every other thing collapsed. Then the Igbos came back to Nigeria and Nigerians celebrated with them and forgot that there was any war . Where they have property, apart from Port Harcourt, people were collecting the rents for them and gave it back to them. But the fact is climbing the social, political and economic ladder takes time” .

“But because of commercial activities, they dominated the economic terrain in Nigeria, the Igbos are the main group of any city in Nigeria. Even in Lagos today, they have Igbos in the House of Representatives” .
“But the Igbos are as disunited as the youths of Nigeria who wants to be president. We were in ANPP. We went to Lagos with the late Chuba Okadigbo who was Buhari’s running mate in the 2003 presidential elections. We met the Igbo chiefs in Lagos and asked for Igbo votes. The chief said we should come back the next day. We came back the following day and he said ‘look at that corner, that is N6m that PDP gave us. Bring us N6m and we will vote for you. I will return the N6m given to us by PDP to them” .

“That is trading and I am not surprised because they are businessmen and they talk business. For you to be talking business, the highest bidder is the person you will befriend. Nigeria will always try to divide the Igbos through financial compromises” .
“ I speak truth to power, issues and institutions. If for instance, you have an Igbo aspiring to be president, you may have about 20 people from the same South-East wanting to be president. The issue is, how can they sit down and say we decide that we want a particular person as our candidate? Nigeria knowing that weakness will cause trouble so that they cannot be united. That is the problem” he said.

Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, on Friday, dispersed members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria protesting the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakyzaky.

The policemen also arrested an activist, and Convener of a civil society group, Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, who has been championing the daily rallies by the Shiite group for the release of their leader by the Federal Government.

Adeyanju was arrested at the Unity Fountain, Maitama, during a sit-out which was disrupted by the police officers who fired tear gas at the participants.

The activist’s arrest is coming a few days after the Buhari Media Support Group called for his detention over comments made by him on Channels Tv breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily against President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.

The group, in a statement by its chairman and secretary, Austin Braimoh and Cassidy Madueke respectively, noted that during the programme, the activist claimed that President Buhari upon landing in the United Kingdom, was immediately whisked to a hospital.

BMSG noted that the statement was capable of inciting unrest and instability in the country.

“Deji Adeyanju is notorious for his mischief and falsehood. He does this deliberately to incite the public. He is also known for his media consultancy with the Islam Movement of Nigeria on whose platform he has called for civil unrest across the country against the government.

“He has also taken to the social media several times to make completely false statements against the government, most times implicitly calling for anarchy,” the statement said.

Adeyanju had in his reaction to the statement said, ”If they don’t arrest me, then they are lily-livered.”

The FCT police spokesman, Anjuguri Manzah, has yet to respond to calls and SMS inquiring about Adeyanju’s arrest.

We shared perspectives on global issues, especially as it concerns the mandate of the ICC.

I conveyed to him the goodwill of the National Assembly of Nigeria and assured him of our support to the ICC's efforts to check crimes against humanity and ensure justice for the victims.

As a Nigerian and African I am proud of the jurist. I believe his emergence is a collective honour for Africa.

Importantly, as somebody coming from Africa, I believe that he is in a better position to understand the issues around the mandate of the ICC because a lot of these atrocities have been recorded in Africa.

For us as a civilised people, we believe that human life is very precious. That is why the right to life is the first right in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria and I think that is the same with modern constitutions the world over. Genocides, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and aggression should have no place in civilised world.

On his part, Judge Eboe-Osuji said the purpose of his visit was to express his gratitude to Nigeria for supporting the ICC and its mandate.

He also said that the idea of the rule of law must continue; that there must be accountability for violations of international criminal laws. And I totally agree with him'.
