Igbo History: Here's why there is a possibility that this tribe is from Israel

However, apart from the story of how they came into being, the Igbos also shares some similar practices with the biblical Jews.

Igbo: Here's why there is a possibility that this tribe is from Israel [CNN]

To believe that the Igbos is one of the lost tribes of Israel might sound ridiculous to a lot of people.

But upon factual analysis, one is forced to rethink the possibility of this claim.

Known to be third largest of the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria, the typical Igbo communities are found in the southeastern part of Nigeria.

And according to oral tradition and many writers of Igbo history, Eri is to the Igbos, what Oduduwa is to the Yoruba.

But unlike Oduduwa whose father is unknown, Eri was the fifth son of Gad, the seventh son of Jacob (Genesis 46:15-18 and Numbers 26:16:18).

He was said to have migrated from Egypt with a group of companions just before the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt thousands of years ago.

Eri and his group were said to have traveled by water and finally arrived at the confluence of Ezu and Omambala Rivers, located in present-day Aguleri, Anambra State.

We were not told how long their voyage took to get to their promised land, what we were told is that Eri and his group was divinely instructed to make the confluence of Ezu and Omambala Rivers their final destination.

They would move into the hinterland and make a settlement in the present-day Aguleri. It was here that Eri lived and died.

Meanwhile, amongst Eri's children was Agulu, the eldest son who took over from his father after his demise.

It was him who appended the name of his father, Eri, to his name and founded Agulu-Eri (Aguleri) by calling the settlement where his father Eri died and he (Agulu) lived AGULERI.

However, apart from the story of how they came into being, the Igbos also shares some similar practices with the biblical Jews. And among the Igbos, these traditional practices predate the coming of the Christian missionaries.

Examples of shared traditional practices between the Jews and the Igbos include circumcising male children eight days after birth, refraining from eating "unclean" or tabooed foods, mourning the dead for seven days and celebrating the New Moon.

Supporting this belief is Daniel Lis, a foremost researcher on Jewish Identification among the Igbo from the University of Basel, Switzerland.

He affirms that there has been a clear continuity of Jewish identity among the Igbo. "It's not just something that happened yesterday," he said.

In addition to the shared practices between the Jews and the Igbos, there is a striking evidence that forces one to see a link between the Igbos and the ancient civilization of Egypt: It is the Ancient Igbo Pyramids, which is also known as the Nsude Pyramids.

The Ancient Igbo Pyramids or Nsude Pyramids is a testimony of ancient civilization among the Igbos.

Nobody knows when it was built, but archeologists have said that the pyramids have lasted centuries and are believed to have been built at the same time the first or second wave of Egyptian pyramids were built by the Nubians.

ALSO READ: The forgotten Igbo pyramids

With similar features to that of the Stepped Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, Egypt, one is forced to contemplate on the mystery behind their resemblance.

And without exaggeration, it can be suggested that the knowledge of one must have led to the building of the other.

Be that as it may, it should be stated here for the purpose of clarity that the word Ndi Igbo/ Ndigbo mean the "Ancient People." And according to them, the British called us IBO or (Igbos): A word synonymous to Hebrew.

There are other interesting arguments, with regard to the topic of this article, that has been presented by concerned Igbo scholars.

Notable among them is the claim that the following Igbo words/phrases were used in the bible

1. Jee na isi isi (Genesis)

Known to be the first book in the bible, some Igbo scholars believe that the word is a corrupted version of the Igbo phrase "jee na isi isi" which when translated in English means "go to the very first".

2. Detere nu umu (Deuteronomy)

Known to be the fifth book in the Bible, the word “Deuteronomy” is from Latin Deuteronomium, from Greek Deuteronomion and originally from Igbo phrase "detere nu umu".

The Igbo phrase, "Detere nu umu" means "written down for the children". And actually, the book of Deuteronomy was words written down to serve as laws for the children of God.

3. Asaa bu taa (Sabbath)

According to the biblical story of creation, God rested on the seventh day. Sabbath is a day set aside for rest and worship. The word is said to be thesame with the Igbo phrase "asaa bu taa" which means "today is seventh."

4. Chere ubim (Cherubim)

Described in the Bible as a winged angel and represented in ancient Middle Eastern art as a lion or bull with eagles' wings and a human face, Cherubim is regarded in Christian angelology as an angel of the second highest order of the nine-fold celestial hierarchy.
However, the name is believed to be a distorted version of the Igbo phrase "chere ubim" which means "guard my home." And of course, angels are guardians.

5. Nta lite kuo ume (Talitha cumi)

According to the book of Mark 5:41, Jesus was storied to have raised from death- the daughter of Jairus. And "Talitha cumi" were the words he used.

"Talitha cumi" or "Talitha kum" or "Talitha koum" is an Aramaic phrase and believed to be an Igbo phrase "nta lite kuo ume" which means "little child wake up and start breathing".

Politics / Re: The Most Cosmopolitan States In Nigeria - My Opinion by Maadoo: 12:17am On Aug 12, 2020
Afam4eva:
There's a thread on the most cosmopolitan states in Nigeria here but like a lot of opinionated threads, it is riddled with misinformation which comes from a place of ignorance and half baked education. I saw IBADAN in the list even though the list what for states instead of cities and it made me wonder what sort of education some Nigerians have.

I also had a problem with the fact that there was no criteria for the ranking. Are we using ethnic groups, religion, non indegenes ? It has to be clearly stated.

That's why i've decided to make my list of the most cosmopolitan states in Nigeria including ABUJA and my criteria is majorly the ethnic distribution of the states and i will be listing them from the most cosmopolitan.

1. LAGOS: This is Nigeria's former capital city and economic capital. Thousands of people make it to Lagos from all over the country on a daily basis. It is a state where you can hear just about any language in the streets, from Yoruba to pidgin English to Igbo and Hausa. Atleast 50% of the population of Lagos are non Yorubas.

2. ABUJA: This is Nigeria's capital territory and nowhere in Nigeria has a more nationalistic feel than this city. The fact that it is home to a lot of government ministries and parastatals means that you will see people from different ethnic groups in the city. It is not called the center of Unity for nothing.

3. Rivers State: This state is the most cosmopolitan state in southern apart from Lagos. It is mostly populated by people from ethnic groups in the south, particular people from states closer to it. That is why you find Ijaws, Igbos, Ikwerres, Ibibios and people from a lot of minority groups in the south. You also have a large Hausa and Yoruba population in the state.

4. Delta State: This state by providence is already cosmopolitan because the state is home to ethnic groups ranging from the Urhobos, Isokos, Itsekiris, Ijaws and the Igbos that are native to the states. You also have a large influx of Igbos from the neigbouring state of Anambra to the capital city of Asaba. it is also home to Edos, Hausas, Yorubas and people from other ethhnic groups.

5. OGUN: Despite being a majority Yoruba state, owing to it's closeness to Lagos state, Ogun has distinguished itself as one of the most cosmopolitaan states as you have people fro all over the country calling the state home especially in places close to Lagos.

6. KADUNA: This state is a special place in Nigeria because it is home to a lot of government agencies which means that it will attract people from all over the country. There's a huge population of Igbo, Yoruba and people from Northern ethnic groups.

7. EDO: The capital of Edo state, Benin used to be the capital of the old Bendel state and as such is home to people from areas that made up the state. That's why you would find Urhobos, Isokos, Ijaws, Itsekiri and Delta Igbos in the capital of the state either doing business of attending the prestigious university of Benin.

Bro Ogun, Edo and Kaduna cannot be more cosmopolitan than Abia and Anambra. Do you know the number of people that troop into these states in search of greener pastures, and traders from mostly west African countries coming to purchase goods to be taken back to their home countries? Abia for example has a lot of ibibios, Efiks, Ijaw, Hausa and yorubas people.

Asides Lagos, Non indigenes in most states in the southwest including ogun are mostly paid workers in government institutions and some manufacturing companies. The only non indigenes that may still be found outside the corporate sectors in these states are mostly Igbo and northern traders. But compare it to states that are purely commercial and imagine the number of people that troop to those states.

For lighter explanation, compare the number of traders in Alaba or ladipo markets And the number of workers employed by all the banks in Lagos state combined.

Then take it to all the markets in Aba or Onitsha alone and them imagine the number of people in those markets such that they even have sections for non indigenes sef.

If Kano is on the list, then Anambra and Abia should be there. They are all in the same category.

Abagworo why do you like ascribing owerri’s development to Rochas? Rochas night expanded the roads, however, owerri has always been beautiful, developed and planned. Rochas even did a poor job with the roads. Very poor quality roads. Is that what you call development?

micseyi:

You are quoting NBC now and it’s sweeting you. Later if NBC releases the IGR of each state, you and ur kins will start shouting ‘Yoruba dominated media’ up and down.

You are obviously not educated. If you are, you would know that IGR doesn’t reflect economic development.
It’s just a tax generated from workers and businesses within the state.

A state can choose to tax less of it citizens to allow for them to have more disposable income, as well as businesses having more money to reinvest, employ more labour and expand their business. It keeps the state citizens economically and socially healthy. It only means that the government will generate less in IGR. This favours Eastern states more because, they are business owners ( mostly small and medium scale enterprise). It will help keep their businesses alive for them to survive and also employ more.

On the other hand, some other states may decide to tax both its citizens and businesses within to death, while it declares high IGR. It only means that, the state would have more IGR generated but the citizens will be poorer and It will make the state less business friendly. This is common in the west and north because, most businesses are owned by outsiders. While you think you are taxing them to death, you forget that the ordinary man on the street will bear the burden, because the business owner will transfer it to the end user through price increase.

That is why in the east, you see people looking fresh, well dressed and fed, as well as looking healthy. Because despite the harsh economic situation, people are still surviving on their businesses. They are still able to afford their basic needs, (food, clothing and shelter),

But in the west, people are always looking frustrated, hungry, malnourished, haggard unhappy and looking like they are suffering from stunted growth. You will even see old women begging in Ibadan for example. The people are not only poor financially, they are also poor in mind. They have no sense of survival or entrepreneurship.

Apart from government civil service in most southwest states, the middle class is almost no existent, unlike in the east where apart for government civil servants, there is a larger class of business men and women, who are not only doing well, they make the middle class very vibrate.

So IGR my foot. The joke is on you.

akure and Ibadan run domestic and in all statistics they make top 10, even as lagos makes 80% of flight traffic... is it that your people have some deficiency with statistics?

Bloody liar. which top ten statistics did Ibadan and Akure airports make? maybe on Ewedu statistics i guess. Oyo state is probably bigger than the whole southeast and with even bigger IGR as you guys always claim yet, the East as a cluster excluding Asaba and portharcourt, is more productive that your big for nothing region outside lagos where igbos hold sway.

we don't take Ibos seriously because of lies they tell... airport like aminu kano and port Harcourt have traffic that would dwarf ibo airport traffic

stop telling lies or we would keep you marginalize forever

yoruba man, what happened to your almighty brown roof Ibadan and Akure airports? They dont even make top 15, hence you want to use Kano airport to launch your offensive. You see how Lagos is covering for the southwest? Even with all the so call high IGR, ibadan cannot sustain an airport. Big IGR, poor masses. #shame. Even your shame couldn't even let you recognize that portharcourt is igboland as well as Asaba. your mumu never do.

We can manage Abia not having one for now, but I know in the nearest future, Abia state will eventually build one.
