I'd really appreciate it if you, seriously, piss off. Who cares if non-Nigerians don't care? Why should they? The point is, I care. Quit trying to gag me and face your own identity crisis issues.
TV/MoviesRe: Depiction Of Nigerians In "District 9" by maedan(f): 8:54pm On Aug 25, 2009
Some people just don't get it. Okay, picture this: a talented Nigerian screenwriter writes a good movie about aliens. He gets some American producers and even their special effects/animation team to work with him on the movie. The storyline is great except, the major bad guys are racist bigots, child rapists and plagued by AIDS - and they are labelled South African. Oh yeah, and the leader of the bad guys' name is Nelson Mandela - ok, sorry, Thabo Mbeki.

The South African watch this movie when it comes out as a blockbuster. And when they find out they're the main people who've been depicted as racist, child-raping, AIDS-infested/spreading assholes, they just laugh it off as a good joke. It's only a stupid movie, right?? Wrong.

There's a big difference between stereotyping for the sake of movie creativity: yeah, Italians are the mafia dons, Iranians are the terrorists, and Americans are the smooth criminals - and then directly making a people/nation the direct object of ridicule and disgust. It's just too obvious to be ignored, and too deeply-cut to just be brushed aside with, "chill out people, it's just a movie". Let's keep this up, and then everyone will soon start taking pot shots at us as a people. And one day, you'll be too ashamed to answer to the nationality "Nigerian."

And get this: we don't just hate the movie. We hate the way in which we were portrayed.

You're so right it's serious. Some people are calling it creativity, the movie makers just being funny as usual. Talking about Borat, he's wanted dead in Kazakstan; he dare not show his face anywhere near that country or he'll be lynched. No one likes to collectively be made a fool of. You can joke about Germans and Chinese and even Africans in movies - Americans are known to laugh even at themselves, they are their own worst critics. But this thing in District 9 is a big dent, a slap in the face. Worse of all, it wasn't even funny. So what was the point? undecided

How embarrassing. I don't know whether to call this unfair or very risky. This could start a wave of Naijaphobia around the world. We have a bad rep already without some crappy movie making us look even worse. Or do they want to bring back all those South African xenophobic killing of Nigerians? So annoying.

Ooohkay. But who's being mean now eh?? Calling the public a "bunch of alcoholic pumped morons" isna nice!! Well, I try to focus only on the judges and the contestants most of the time. Works for me wink cheesy!
TV/MoviesRe: X-factor (Who's Watching) by maedan(f): 5:34pm On Aug 24, 2009
@chic2pimp, what's up with you and polls anyway grin?? You're always on about the bookies' favourite and the ratings and some such. Do you know how tough it is for the judges to audition gadzillions of singers, out of which just 1% are worth listening to not to speak of selecting for the next round? Having the public involved makes it more bearable and glitzy I suppose, so they get a chance to suffer a bit of what the judges have always gone through. I don't care how they do it, I just watch the participants anyway. Dwayne's was funny too, esp when he offered to sing "Happy Birthday" cheesy tongue. I'm happy he finally remembered Brokenhearted girl. Singing a Beyonce song is always a winning move wink!

True about Rachel not being a muppet - but I guess they realised the BB ratings had dropped this season so they reined Bello in to make him earn the crown he'd won grin! I know what you mean about Bea leaving the house a bit dry - but that happened when Noirin left, too. I think Roddy,  Siavash and Marcus would always find a way of making the house boil again. And don't forget funny bones Sophie and kinked-up Dave. So who needs Bea anyway cheesy??

@ mohawkchic
You've missed plenty if you haven't been watching BBLB. Move over, O'Leary, George Lamb is the best!! He makes it cool again to watch BB. I totally think he's more professional and funnier than Davina, whom I barely tolerate cheesy. Full of humour you sayhuh I think she's just acting! George is for real, I'll be sorry when the show comes to an end with the final eviction!

PS: I'll gladly transfer my BB aggression to the X-Factor; no need to ask twice. Already the fans are saying "Daniel to Win!!" after his incredible audition. But that's another show. Catch u there!!
TV/MoviesRe: Daniel Craig Is An Insult To The James Bond Persona by maedan(f): 4:15pm On Aug 24, 2009
People forget so easily that back in the day, James Bond's good looks and smooth charm was part of his artillery. Just like in real life, a handsome face can get you into a lot of good places and out of a lot of bad ones. So if they've decided to change the Bond persona to tough and rough, then Daniel Craig fits just fine.

na wa for madam "stop being silly". So because she has four kids I should be compelled to pick her? Get over yourself and read the topic: "who is more cute faciallyhuh?" Does she use her face to give birth? Nadia is prettier to me, tho' I thot because of the age difference, they shouldn't be compared.
TV/MoviesRe: ~ Big Brother 10 UK ~ by maedan(f): 5:55am On Aug 24, 2009
Now that I know what the winner of BB will be obliged to do, ie fooling himself/herself at every BB spin-off show(pls see Brian Bello on BBLB and BBBM), I just can't think who should win. Somehow, I can't see Marcus, Siavash or even Roddy embarrassing himself to Davina or George Lamb's prompting. Charlie might be a pliant BB winner though. Sophie, Lisa or David? Hmmn, I don't think so.
CelebritiesRe: Omotola Vs Nadia Buari, Whos More Cute Facially? by maedan(f): 12:01am On Aug 24, 2009
^^^Yep, the age gap makes the comparison unfair. To Omotola. But talking here and now, Nadia is "more cute" IMO.

I liked Daniel too, though he's not such a fantastic singer - but he covers up well with a fantastic performance. What dulled his shine for me was when I heard he is openly bi-sexual. No homophobia here, but I just wished the hot ones will just stay plain straight FFS!!!

You, you're very lucky. You would have chopped ur boxers today tongue. Yeah, Bea the Legend. But what goes around comes around. She was smug when Noirin and then Freddy left, but tonight was her turn. So you know what? She would have been a legend if she had ended up winning BB despite her character. But she's out now and in a week, no one would even remember her name.

mohawkchic:
~She is Just! She's fun to watch presenting BBBM. . the lingo, attitude she puts on. . only off-putting bit for me is that Brain Bello geezer she keeps having on each week doing ridiculous stunts. . .winds me up big time. . i'm pleased i gave his season a miss when he was on . . .Eugh! angry
My word!!! That Bello guy is freaking unbelievable!! He's like a puppet who does what ever they tell him, even if that means him making a total ass of himself!! He amazes me each time he appears on TV, always doing something worse than the last time. I can't wait for the new winner in a few weeks so we can see Brian's mumu face no more!

I don't get it: are you questioning his actions, or the motives behind ithuh Your post caught my eye because it sounds so funny grin. If you're complaining because he's like those men who do all the shopping and bills just to monitor the cash spending and make sure the "madam" doesn't play a fast one with the housekeeping allowance, then you're right. He is rude!!

yeah i watched that as well. ve never seen anyone receive such boos.

Davina is such a clown btw "Davina's tits r bangin'"
Tits?? What titshuh cheesy cheesy

Yeah, Bea got the boos. You kind of start to feel sorry for her because she kept acting so clueless!!!! What was she thinking, that her eviction was a mistake??

Anyway, all the good guys are left in the house. No one to rant about now. And they are all acting too lovey-dovey to want to nominate eachother again. But I trust BB. If they refrain from nominating next week, I'm sure Big Brother will think of something!
TV/MoviesRe: ~ Big Brother 10 UK ~ by maedan(f): 12:24am On Aug 22, 2009
What a draining last couple of days its been. Ever since the nominations were announced, I was practically counting down the hours till Davina announced the 11th BB evictee. I guess Marcus was right: Bea wasn't ready for what the 4million(?) viewers thought about her with her welcoming boos. I think she had far more of them than Noirin!

The most baffling thing was that, she just didn't know what she was getting into! I always believed she was a fake housemate like the Isi of Koko mansion, I just couldn't believe someone could naturally be so nasty!!! Well well, I'm happy for David. I guess he has one more week before he starts to irritate the hm8s and viewers with his belching, loud-voiced antics. Ta ta, guys wink!

WHAT THE HECK?!?!?!? YOU ARE CONTRADICTING YOURSELF. You said who shoots movies in South Africa anyway? Now you are saying that "there's a difference between shooting a movie in South Africa(as a location) and a movie from South Africa." Stop contradicting yourself man.
Did you ever hear about Tsotsi, the south african movie that won an academy award? What has our Nollywood movies ever accomplished, geez.

By the way, the director of the movie "district 9" is south african.
Whatever. Contradiction or not, it's just a matter of semantics and I wish you'd get off my case. I'm quite sick of this topic but I don't mind repeating myself that the film was far from enjoyable. Big deal about the Totsi movie. I know I'll be opening myself up for insults if i say I never heard of it until lately. Anyway, good luck to the District 9 fans, I'm hearing there's going to be a sequel (District 10 tongue??) so I guess you all have a lot to look forward to.

TV/MoviesRe: Depiction Of Nigerians In "District 9" by maedan(f): 3:14pm On Aug 20, 2009
Ok, well done, but I think it's time you carry your load to the racist and tribalism section cos this place is not for you. We were talking (by "we" I mean the other responsible people that have been on this topic), about how bad the movie was and why we didn't like it. Until u came barging in about how much the movie has achieved.

Once again, I say well done. I'm trying to figure out if you're a South African trying to be a Nigerian, or a Nigerian trying to be South African. I was bored with the movie three minutes into it, even before I saw that scene in the slums with the "Nigerians" trying to "cheat" the aliens. The so-called leader was even called "Obasanjo". Very funny.

But even without those slurs, I couldn't finish the movie. Drrrrryyy. Thanks to the special effects and the imported director, the movie has won fame. The same fame a dog would win if it started dancing calypso. Let me assure you though, that if the Nigerian movie industry had half the facilities their South african counterparts have, we would have been shoulder to shoulder with Hollywood by now, not licking crumbs from their table like your SA movie people are doing. tongue
TV/MoviesRe: Depiction Of Nigerians In "District 9" by maedan(f): 2:44pm On Aug 20, 2009
To be frank, the fact that you are even here on this Nigerian forum making a nuisance of yourself, is proof of all I've been saying. Or don't you have any entertaining and high-quality South African forums to inflict yourself upon? I still maintain I don't like that District 9 movie, even if I wasn't a Nigerian, I wouldn't see what the fuss is all about.
