Politics2019 Elections: 350 Million Illegal Weapons In Nigeria - FG by maimalari(op): 9:04pm On Jan 23, 2018
The federal Government of Nigeria has lamented that at least, 350 million illegal weapons are currently in the country.
Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau who stated this on Tuesday in Abuja at a meeting on proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria, said this situation may impact on the 2019 general elections negatively.
While expressing dissatisfaction with proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the country, he stressed that 70 percent of the 500 million of such weapons in West Africa found their ways to Nigeria.
"From records by the United Nations Centre for Peace and Disarmament, I understand that there are approximately 500 million assorted firearms in West Africa.
"And out of these 500 million, 70 per cent, approximating 350 million of them are in Nigeria. And, of course, we know for a fact, that quite a large consignment of weapons are being smuggled, or have been smuggled from North Africa, in particular, Libya, as a consequence of the crisis in that country.
"And, in addition to that, the insurgency in the North East, adds more of the problem. Because of the supplies of weapons to the insurgents and terrorists there.
"Likewise, we have similar problems in the Niger Delta, where militants are supplied weapons, not only by trade-by-barter with (with stolen oil), but also politicians supply weapons, in order to carry out actions against opponents.
"These are the issues that we hope to deal with, particularly that 2019 elections are coming up. And, quite a lot of movements of these weapons; people take advantage of that. So, it is very necessary for us to secure our country", Dambazau said.
Dambazau blamed Nigeria's porous borders for the proliferation of the illegal weapons.
He declared that the Federal Government was determined to end the trend before the 2019 elections.
"Following the meeting we had with Governors two weeks back over the violent conflicts that took place in Benue and other places, between herders and farmers, one of the issues that came up in the communique, was the issue of the proliferation of small arms, and also the issue of drug trafficking and abuse.
"And, we also found that these two issues are triggers to the violence taking place in this country.
"Without the firearms, without the drugs being processed, the courage of those who partake in violence, we would not have the kind of violence with magnitude we have today. So, there is need to take very urgent action, in order to ensure that this situation is dealt with accordingly.
"And, as a follow-up, I invited this meeting of experts so that we will be able to deal with the situation, examine and analyse it, and see how best we can approach it.
Dambazau challenged the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigeria Customs Service and other security agencies to ensure that the nation's borders are well manned.
"Our borders are porous. With about 5,000 kilometres porous, there is need for us to look at these issues, because we must secure our country, we must secure our future.
"But, with these weapons and drugs smuggled into this country, if we don't do something now, I am afraid things will be worse than it is now.
"The herders/farmers' conflict, ethno/religious crisis, violent crimes of armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, militancy, terrorism; all that have something to with weapons and drugs. So, we must deal with this issue."

PoliticsUnder Buhari, Cows Important Than Human Lives.-gov Wike by maimalari(op): 11:44am On Jan 20, 2018
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari was under pressure at ‘some point in the past’ to declare a state of emergency in the state.
The governor, who is a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, also said the lives of animals are treated better under the present administration.
“When I went to see the President, he told me that he was under pressure to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State,” a Government House statement quoted Mr. Wike to have said on Friday when he received the Anglican Bishops of Niger Delta Province who visited him at the Government House.
The governor did not, however, mention when, and why, the president made the remark.
Apart from political tension caused by hotly contested elections which are oftentimes marred by violence and killings, Rivers has witnessed several cult-related violence and killings, the latest one being the gruesome killing of 17 people in Omoku on New Year Day.
The opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state is accusing the governor of “working with” cult kingpins and lacking the capacity to tackle insecurity in the state. Mr. Wike denies this.
Mr. Wike told the Anglican bishops that his state ceased to be the focus of the APC-controlled federal government because of “mass insecurity across the country”.
“Those things they planned to use in declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State fell on their own states and it became difficult to do so,” he said.
“When you sit and plot evil against Rivers State, you will not know peace. If they don’t apologise for plotting and executing evil against Rivers State, they will never know peace.”
The governor accused President Buhari of not showing interest on the recent killing in Benue State, saying that in some other countries the president would have visited the area to assess the situation even if the lives lost were fewer in number.
“Human lives are not respected,” he said. “In fact, the lives of cows and chicken appear to be more important than human lives.
“This has nothing to do with politics. Let us not trivialise the catastrophy that has befallen Nigeria,” he added.
Mr. Wike, who said that his state survived by the prayers of the clerics and the church, urged the church to show interest in the nation’s politics.
“If you don’t participate in what is happening through voting, the country will degenerate further. People should acquire their permanent voter’s card to enthrone the leadership they desire,” he said.
Mr. Wike reiterated his administration’s plan to set up a Christian Trust Fund to cater for indigent clerics and told the bishops that a proposal to that effect was already in the 2018 budget of the state.
The bishops, led by the Anglican Archbishop of Niger Delta Province, Ignatius Kattey, told the governor that they were in the Government House to thank him for his role in the success of the Anglican Synod.
The bishops, who were accompanied by their wives, presented an award to the governor.

PoliticsGov Wike Unable To Pay Pension In Rivers State by maimalari(op): 10:40am On Jan 20, 2018
Retired Civil Servants in Rivers State have issued two months ultimatum to the Rivers State government to pay off all the outstanding pensions in the state.

The retired civil servants said failure on the part of Government to comply with the ultimatum would attract legal action.

The State leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners said this in reaction to alleged statement credited to Governor Wike at flag off of road construction at Isiokpo in Ikwerre Local Government on the 23rd December last year where the Governor denied that the state government was owning the pensioners.

Rising from a state Congress of the Union, the State Chairman of Pensioners, Edward Festus-Abibo pointed out that for over fifteen years since the review of pension, salaries, incomes and wages commission had not been paid.

He complained that every effort to draw the attention of the Governor to the plight of the pensioners had proved abortive.

Abibo further lamented the untold hardships experienced by the pensioners just as called for review of the contributory pension scheme which he said was not favourable to pensioners.

According to him, “Rivers State government is the only government that has refused to pay attention to the increase in pension rate since fifteen years now.

“The Union is very much shocked with Governor Wike’s statement; we want to categorically state that the state government is owing pensioners of this state.

“Respect they say is reciprocal, no matter the level one has attained in life, honour should be given to whom honour is due.

“Some of us trained most of the political leaders, so it is injustice and inhuman for the senior citizens not to be paid their pension entitlements and be respected”, he said.

PoliticsMiyetti Allah Says Jonathan Faction Responsible For Violence In Benue. by maimalari(op): 8:25am On Jan 09, 2018
The Secretary-General of the association, Usman Ngelzerma, said this during an interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday.

Ngelzerma said, “I like the Benue State governor. He is a peace-loving person but is working on wrong advice. The approach he took is wrong. You cannot change the way of life of a people like the way you turn off a light switch.

“We don’t wish for the crisis to continue but let us give it (the law) another look. We don’t like the killings; we will never condone the killing of people. Give the farmers their rights but consider the pastoralists too.”

Ngelzerma, blamed a faction of the association for issuing threats before the latest attacks in Benue State.

He fingered the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, which endorsed the then President Goodluck Jonathan in the build-up to the 2015 election, as being at loggerheads with the Benue State Government.

The secretary-general alleged that the livestock guards, employed by the state government to enforce the anti-open grazing law, were high-handed and were extorting money from the pastoralists.

Ngelzerma claimed that the fighting between the herdsmen and the livestock guards led to the January 1 killings in five communities in the Guma and Logo Local Government Areas of the state in which over 20 persons were murdered.

The PDP man came 3rd because he didn't share money like others, obi must have told him not to do so believing people would vote for them because the man stingy die. If obiano had performed, he wouldn't have been tensed a bit to the point of sharing money to voters. Peter obi never shared money for both his first and second tenure because he knew his achievement will speak for him.

In as much as i don't like PDP, please don't compare Obi with Obiano because if both of them should compete, you know who will definitely win. Obi had the chance of decamping to PDP during his second tenure but he never did instead he brought in Obiano to maintain APGA in Anambra before decamping to PDP. you guys should be more concerned at how Obiano will decamp to APC in his second tenure just like Rochas. PoliticsOseloka Obaze Rejects Anambra Election Results by maimalari(op): 10:18pm On Nov 19, 2017
Oseloka Obaze, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has rejected the result of Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra.
Mr. Obaze, in a statement on Sunday, said the result as released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not reflect what happened in the field.

The Commission had declared incumbent Willie Obiano of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) the winner of the election.

The Returning Officer, Zana Akpagu, said Mr. Obiano polled 234, 071 votes to defeat his closest rival, Tony Nwoye of All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 98, 752 votes.

Mr. Akpagu, the Vice Chancellor of University of Calabar, said the PDP candidate, Oseloka Obaze, came third with 70,293 votes.

He said the total valid votes cast at the poll was 422,314; total number of rejected votes, 26,457 while the total votes cast was 448,771 votes.

Mr. Obaze said there were cases of inconsistency and over voting when compared with the records from the electronic card reader.

He also said it was an aberration that APGA could win all the 21 local governments.

“The Anambra governorship election results just released by INEC, does not reflect the realities of the votes cast on Nov. 18 by the Anambra electorate.

“The over voting and inconsistencies between the counted ballots and card reader data remains exceedingly worrisome.

“The uniformity of the incumbent governor wining twenty-one local governments is a political aberration in the context of Anambra politics.

“The election result as reported, shows that nothing matters to the Anambra electorate.
“The people have spoken, they have taken a cursory long term view of what they wish fo Anambra State.”

PoliticsRe: Wike Wants To Reconstruct Benue Roads. "There’s Plot To Disturb Contractor" Wike by maimalari(op): 6:05am On Mar 30, 2017
maimalari:
A PLOT to disturb the contractor hired by Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike to reconstruct two roads in Benue State may have been uncovered.

The Rivers State governor yesterday raised the alarm over the plot to scuttle the multi-billion project.

On Sunday, Wike said he decided to reconstruct the Makurdi-Naka-Adoka and the Aliade-Oju-Obarike-Ito-Otukpo roads in Benue State, as his contribution to alleviate the suffering of people of the state. He put the project cost at N4 billion.

Speaking yesterday, Wike alleged that some elements in the Benue State were planning to disturb contractor he had mobilised to the sites.

He said: “We have mobilised the contractor to site, to reconstruct the two roads in Benue. But information reaching us indicate that there is plan to disturb the work. We want to get the road done as quickly as possible, but the plan to disturb the contractor is giving us some worries.

“Those who are planning this should bear in mind that they are working against development. The people of Benue, who use these roads, are suffering and we want to bring an end to this by reconstructing the roads. Those against the job should not be enemies of progress.”

According to him, the recent protest of pensioners in the state confirmed his earlier claim that the welfare of the people in Benue State has not received adequate attention from the government.

“You must have heard that pensioners protested in Benue. They protested because they are being owed pension arrears. I have been vindicated. The Benue State government has failed in its duties,” he said.

Wike’s call for the imposition of a state of emergency in Benue State over what he described as the state government’s show of incapability in handling security matters drew the ire of his Benue counterpart, Samuel Ortom.

He also called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe Ortom over the use of Paris Club refund allocation.

On the Paris Club refunds, the governor said despite the amount of money disbursed to Benue, the state government has not done much for the people.

Wike said Benue people are suffering “because they don’t have dividends of democracy.”
