Night fell Monday in Nairobi with no clear resolution of the standoff between Kenyan forces and terrorists at Westgate Shopping Mall. Kenyan authorities sounded increasingly confident that they had brought the three-day standoff to a close with a final assault Monday, reassuring a nervous public that there was little chance of escape for any surviving Al-Shabaab gunmen who had terrorized the mall, killing at least 62 people. "Taken control of all the floors. We're not here to feed the attackers with pastries but to finish and punish them," Kenyan police Inspector General David Kimaiyo said on Twitter. But it wasn't clear Monday evening whether any hostages remained inside the four-story mall, and authorities had yet to sound the all-clear about six hours after the assault by Kenyan forces. Gunfire echoed from the mall sporadically during the day, sending journalists and aid workers scrambling for cover. Thick heavy smoke -- from a fire set by terrorists, according to Kenyan authorities -- billowed into the air much of the afternoon. There is no let up in the crises in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party,PDP,as the seven “rebel” governors may have resolved to turn their backs finally against the party and shut out further reconciliations. They are heading to the Accord Party, and former president Olusegun Obasanjo is being touted as the national leader. The decision was taken at a meeting of the aggrieved leaders of the nPDP in Abuja yesterday. A competent source close to the group told Sunday sun that the choice of Accord Party was arrived at following a careful study of current trends in the polity, the terrain and current political dynamics.credit http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/rebel-governors-set-to-join-accord-party/ updates @ http://..com/ |
Ahead of the November 13 governorship election in Anambra State, the rumour of financial inducement to Catholic priests to say Novena Masses for one of the candidates in the state has created confusion among the faithful and the priesthood. It was gathered that a text message allegedly sent to Catholic priests in the state by unidentified people, asked them to pray for the ambition of a candidate, with the text saying that the priests should expect some stipends for their efforts, an effort seen as geared towards exploiting the massive influence of the Catholic Church in the state. The alleged message, which had incensed the Anambra Catholic clergy and others was said to have read thus in part: “Dear parish priests, you are directed to offer nine Sunday masses (beginning this Sunday) for (name withheld), a governorship candidate. Please check your letter boxes at information desk from Monday next week for the stipend. Fin Admin.” But the Director of Communications of Onitsha Archdiocese, Reverend Father Pius Uko, in a reaction to the allegation, said it was a rumour, saying it was not true that priests received such request and offer. Father Uko said he was sure that he and the priests working with him did not receive any such text message. He said: “I have not received any text message or money. Here in my house, I leave with five priests and none among then has received any text message or money. In my office where I have three priests, none of us received any money or text message. I do not think it is true but for all I know, I am not aware of that.” However, a priest from Awka Catholic Diocese was quoted to have said “We are supposed to be an unbiased umpire. Our duty is to pin point the areas where things are not going well and advice our leaders. We are not supposed to be partisan at all. Most of us turned down the offer because of the experience of 2010 where some of us abdicated their duties for vain glory.” In a related development, Awka the Anambra State capital was agog on Saturday when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the governorship election, Mr. Tony Nwoye was led into the state capital by national leaders of the PDP. Nwoye and his entourage were received by a large crowd of supporters and well-wishers at a reception reception they said marked the end of crisis in their party. Nwoye told the large gathering that “the days of the reign of Governor Peter Obi’s All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the state is over and gone,” and expressed support for President Goodluck Jonathan, his administration and vision. According to Nwoye, “Anambra remains a PDP state and the PDP has now come to retake it for the party,” saying “We have seen eight years of Mr. Peter Obi’s administration and every one can see that it is a colossal failure. He now wants one of his boys to replace him so that the misrule and maladministration can continue.” source: http://www.tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/news/item/22188-anambra-2013-confusion-over-alleged-monetary-gift-to-catholic-priests.html updates @ http://..com/ |

Oil and gas workers in Akwa Ibom State have given notice to begin an indefinite strike on Monday over plans by Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited to sack them. The workers, under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, gave the notice in a statement issued on Saturday in Lagos. The statement was signed by NUPENG’s General Secretary, Isaac Aberare. Aberare said: “We warn against the alleged plan to disengage 80 per cent of the labour contract workers and replace them with service employees by the end of September. “We find this plan unacceptable and unfair after our members have helped to contribute their quota to the growth of the company. “We will resist it.” The workers, in the statement, said that some contract staff in Mobil had been sacked and replaced with new ones on new contracts terms that negate the collective bargaining agreement signed with NUPENG. The statement added: “The union cannot watch and see its members being sacked indiscriminately. “It will lead to bad precedence in the oil and gas industry.” The statement said that the new employees use tools, equipment, machinery and vehicles that belong to Mobil to perform their jobs but they were denied the benefits stipulated in the agreement. It said that Mobil had also refused to give the mandate to labour contractors to hold the quarterly Joint Consultative Council meeting. The statement said that NUPENG had written several letters to the management of Mobil on the issues but all entreaties for dialogue were ignored by the oil company. source:http://sunnewsonline.com/new/national/mobils-sack-threat-nupeng-begins-strike-on-monday/ more at http://..com |

(CNN) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani made his case Thursday to the American people and the world for "a constructive approach" to contentious issues including his nation's nuclear program, arguing that failing to engage "leads to everyone's loss." "We must work together to end the unhealthy rivalries and interferences that fuel violence and drive us apart," Rouhani said in an op-ed published Thursday evening on the Washington Post's website. It's not the first time a leader from a country often at podds with the United States has used its newspapers to convey his or her views. Just last week, for instance, Russian President Vladimir Putin argued against international military intervention in Syria and jabbed his U.S. counterpart for saying Americans should consider themselves "exceptional" -- a remark that quickly elicited derision from across the U.S. political spectrum. But Rouhani's tone differed from Putin's, echoing the theme of "prudence and hope" and the promise of more positive engagement with the rest of the world that helped propel him to an election win in June. "To move beyond impasses, ... we need to aim higher," he said. "Rather than focusing on how to prevent things from getting worse, we need to think -- and talk -- about how to make things better." Contending "the age of blood feuds" and the idea of diplomacy as a "zero-sum game" no longer apply in a "changed" world, Rouhani said leaders should engage each other "on the basis of equal footing and mutual respect." "My approach to foreign policy seeks to resolve ... issues by addressing their underlying causes," he said. "We must work together to end the unhealthy rivalries and interferences that fuel violence and drive us apart." Chief among those issues, for Iran, is its nuclear program. Iranian officials have insisted its aim is peaceful and for energy purposes only, but skeptical U.S., Israeli and other officials accuse Tehran of working to develop nuclear weapons. Iran's lack of openness on the issue and its perceived lack of cooperation with international nuclear authorities, have led to stringent international sanctions and increased tensions in the region. In his opinion column Thursday, Rouhani sought to frame the debate over what he called "our peaceful nuclear energy program." This program, he said, is tied into not only addressing Iran's energy needs but also into establishing its place in the world. "To us, mastering the atomic fuel cycle and generating nuclear power is as much about diversifying our energy resources as it is about who Iranians are as a nation, our demand for dignity and respect, and our consequent place in the world," he said. The Washington Post column appears to be part of a U.S.-targeted public relations initiative by Rouhani, coming a day after he talked with NBC News. In that interview, Rouhani said, "We have never pursued or sought a nuclear bomb and we are not going to do so." Iran's Rouhani: Diplomat's touch, no pushover There's little dispute Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is Iran's most powerful figure. Still, Rouhani said Thursday that he and his delegation will head to New York with the "full power and has complete authority" to make a deal with others on nuclear matters. The Iranian president also talked about trading letters with Obama this summer, an exchange he called "positive and constructive." "It could be subtle and tiny steps for a very important future," Rouhani told NBC, according to video on the network's website. "I believe the leaders in all countries could think in their national interests and that they should not be under the influence of (interest) groups." Rouhani's Washington Post op-ed published a few hours after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry -- also speaking in Washington -- characterized some of the new Iranian president's remarks as "very positive." Yet he offered his compliment with a caveat: "Everything needs to be put to the test, and we'll see where we go." Iranian human rights activist freed Kerry punted on a question of whether Rouhani and U.S. President Barack Obama will meet next week when both attend the U.N. General Assembly in New York. Asked the same question Wednesday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said "there are currently no plans" for such a face-to-face meeting though he also didn't rule it out. And Carney did hint the United States is open to talks with Iran -- with whom it has feuded regarding Iran's nuclear program, a dispute that's led to harsh international sanctions and raised the specter of war in the region -- to "test" whether Tehran is sincere in its hope to improve its international standing. "I think it's fair to say that (Obama) believes there is an opportunity for diplomacy when it comes to the issues that have presented challenges to the United States and our allies with regards to Iran," Carney said. "And we hope that the Iranian government takes advantage of this opportunity." In fact, there were high-level talks Thursday -- involving Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Zarif called the meeting "constructive," saying it involved "satisfactory negotiations" on various issues such as Iran's nuclear program, according to the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency. Ban's office also issued a positive statement on the meeting, saying the two "discussed Iran's growing cooperation with the international community on a host of issues, including the nuclear file, as well the role Iran could play in promoting a political solution to the conflict in Syria." This cooperation has been spearheaded by Rouhani, himself a former nuclear negotiator who vowed during his campaign to try to reduce tensions between Iran and the outside world. That includes expressing openness in talks on its nuclear program. The 64-year-old cleric, who is considered a moderate, said last month that as long as there are "negotiations without threats, the way for interaction is open." http://..com/2013/09/iran-president-to-us-lets-end-rivalry.html

(CNN) -- The "Snake Man" is real. The mythical creature with the body of a serpent and face of a human folds himself into a tight coil for the gasping crowds, before slithering into his next impossible position. Or at least, that's how it seemed to circus manager Winston Ruddle when he first saw the homeless boy dressed head-to-toe in a snake skin suit, performing on the streets of Mombasa, Kenya. A decade later, the mysterious "Snake Man" -- better known as 30-year-old contortionist Lazarus Gitu -- is now set to perform on New York's Broadway, one of the star acts in Ruddle's spectacular circus show While other professional contortionists spend years training in specialist schools from just five-years-old, Gitu learned his trade while living on the streets aged 14. An orphan whose mother had died from Aids and father from old age, Gitu learned to bend his body into incredible positions from watching other performers busking. "I noticed I could do better than them, and I started training on my own," said Gitu. "I was on the streets for six years with other boys and they all depended on me as their star show -- it was how we made money to survive." The freakishly flexible teen became something of a legend on the streets of Mombasa, and when Ruddle came to the city looking for performers for his new circus troupe, he was quickly pointed in the direction of the "Snake Man." http://..com/2013/09/street-kid-who-grew-into-snake-man.html

ASUU strike: Jonathan approves N400bn lifeline –SSANU The end to the present strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be in sight as President Goodluck Jonathan has approved N400 billion for the infrastructural development of Nigerian universities. The document to this effect is expected to be made available today at the meeting of the presidential committee on implementation of the NEEDS assessment in the universities with the leaders of the four university-based unions – the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The President of SSANU, Samson Ugwoke, made the revelation while addressing his union members at the SSANU National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the weekend at the University of Abuja. Ugwoke, briefing the SSANU members on the activities of the NEEDS assesment implementation committee, led by Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam. He noted that the fund was different from the N100 billion Governor Suswam had raised from donor agencies and big companies to tackle the problems of Nigerian universities in 2013. The labour leader said: “Let me give you a tip on what the NEEDS assessment committee is doing. The president has approved that within the next four years; N400 billion would be expended in infrastructural development of Nigerian universities, to transform the universities to international standard. “N100 billion has already been raised by Suswam committee out of which 61 universities have been pencilled down, as contained in the NEEDS assessement committee. The N100 billion is expected to address needs of the universities in the areas which include re-furbishing and renovation of lecture theatres and lecture halls, re-furbishing and renovation of laboratories/libraries and the renovation of hostels. “The second category is building of new hostels of international standard, self-contained rooms, the latest model in the world. That is the standard to be built in every university, and also the state-of-the-art laboratories as well as classrooms, lecture theatres and the halls.” Ugwoke pointed out that the money had been shared and out of the N100 billion, N96 billion had been sent to universities. He added: “The committee is meeting again on Monday, and by Monday (today), the document will be out. This time around, it is not only by giving university money, but it will be monitored to ensure that the money is used to transform the universities, to bail universities out of the present situation and developed to an international recognized university standard.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/ASUU-strike-jonathan-approves-n400bn-lifeline-ssanu/ http://..com/2013/08/ASUU-strike-update-jonathan-approves.html |
