Crime / Lagos Task Force Used A Commercial Bus To Crush A Motorcyclist’s Leg, (photo) by Maniagist: 8:10am On Oct 16, 2019
Personnel of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Agency (task force) allegedly used a commercial bus to crush a motorcyclist, Segun Joseph, at the Bolade bus stop in the Oshodi area of the state.

The incident was said to have happened on Sunday while the officials attempted to apprehend Segun for riding his motorcycle on a restricted road.

After knocking down Segun, the officials impounded his motorcycle and abandoned the 38-year-old, who suffered a dislocated right ankle in the process.

It was gathered that good Samaritans, including policemen from the Akinpelu Police Division, rescued Segun and rushed him to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, for treatment.

Segun said he was on his way to pick a passenger when the task force personnel rammed him with the bus around 9pm.

He stated that despite sustaining an injury from the crash, the men ignored him and impounded his motorcycle and left him for dead.

The father of three said, “I was on my way to convey a soldier when the task force officials suddenly used a commercial bus to knock me down around the Bolade bus stop, Oshodi, and shattered my right ankle in the process.

Immediately I was knocked down, the officials jumped out of the bus to seize my motorcycle. I tried to resist them, but they pushed me out of the way, saying all they needed was my motorcycle.

I can no longer walk. Some good Samaritans, including policemen, who were on patrol, took me to the LASUTH.”

Segun’s wife, Bukola, said her husband had been transferred to a private hospital in Ogun State, adding that a lot of money had been expended on his medical bills.

The Chairman of the task force, Olayinka Egbeyemi, said the agency did not work on Sundays and advised Segun to present facts to back up his claims so that an investigation could commence into the incident.

Egbeyemi said, “We don’t work on Sundays; it was on Monday that we impounded motorcycles. If the victim knows the names or recognises the faces of the officials, he should come to me. I deal with facts; we don’t use commercial vehicles to operate, because we have our patrol vehicles and anybody on an illegal duty cannot bring an impounded motorcycle to our office, because I will ask him where he got it from.

They won’t even bring such a motorcycle knowing that somebody was injured. Let us know their names instead of speculating that they are men of the task force. It is not only the task force that enforces the ban on motorcycle operations on certain routes in the state; it is the duty of the entire state police command.

Meanwhile, Egbeyemi said during a parade on Tuesday, that 134 motorcycles were impounded from defiant motorcyclists, who plied restricted routes in the state.

He said an O’Ride power bike was also impounded, because the motorcyclist rode against the traffic.

The task force chairman said the motorcycles were seized at the CMS, Marina, Apongbon and Yaba area of the state, adding that the clampdown on errant motorcyclists would stretch to Victoria Island, Ajah and Lekki to put a check to their illegal operations.

Egbeyemi said, “The routes they are plying are restricted in accordance with the Lagos State Traffic Law, which states that every motorcycle operator must wear crash helmet, be above 18 years, avoid riding on kerbs/medians/road setbacks and restricted routes, avoid carrying more than one passengers/pregnant women/adults with babies/children below 12 years, avoid installing any musical gadgets, must wear an apron and should not operate beyond 10pm, operate with a rider’s permit and have the motorcycles registered with the government.

The recklessness of the O’Ride motorcyclists is gradually becoming a problem on our roads, because they ride against the traffic and on flyovers, ignoring the casualties that may occur. They should adhere to the Lagos State traffic rules, if not the agency will be hard on them.

We are ready to ensure that the Lagos traffic regulations are adhered to in all areas of the state and by all commercial motorcycle operators to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, on Monday, October 14, 2019, raided an Osogbo-based nightclub notorious for hosting parties for suspected internet fraudsters.

The raid led to the arrest of 94 suspects and confiscation of 19 exotic cars, laptops, scores of sophisticated mobile phones and other items.

Popularly known as ‘Club Secret Underground’, the nightclub is located on the Ibadan-Iwo Expressway of the Osun State capital.

The wee-hour operation was sequel to an intelligence report hinting that the suspected internet fraudsters were organising a night party for Sunday, October 13 during which some of them intended to celebrate their loots.

A discreet operation on the club had earlier been carried out to ascertain the authenticity of the intelligence.

The confirmation led to the mega raid effected on Monday.

The suspects are currently undergoing further interrogation, and those indicted would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

Crime / Eight FCT Residents Regain Freedom After Paying N5m Ransom by Maniagist: 8:33pm On Oct 13, 2019
Eight of the 10 persons abducted last Monday by unknown gunmen at Pegi, a sleepy community in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, have been released.

Our Correspondent learnt that the victims were freed by their abductors after paying over N5m ransom.

Many of them were reportedly molested by their captors over the failure of their family members to meet the ransom demand.

A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said the eighth victim was released on Sunday, adding that two others were still in the custody of the gunmen.

He said a victim, identified as Abdulmajeed Dayo, who was visiting a friend in Pegi, was abducted alongside the commercial motorcyclist taking him to the community.

The source said, “Dayo was released on Friday after spending five days with his abductors.

He said they were not given any food by their captors and that the hoodlums beat anyone whose family failed to provide the ransom demanded.

Dayo further explained that the family of the abducted commercial motorcyclist paid over N500,000 which the gunmen grudgingly accepted out of sympathy.

Other victims were said to have paid more than that, with the gunmen realising over N5m.”

Confirming the release of the victims, Chairman, Pegi Community Development Association, Mr. Isaac Taiwo, said he saw some of the freed victims, including a 12-year-old boy.

Taiwo disclosed that security had been beefed up in the community by a team of policemen, civil defence officers and vigilante group.

He said, “The problem is that the hoodlums are taking advantage of the bad roads leading to the community.

The lack of infrastructure in Pegi is responsible for the insecurity and the absence of social and economic development in the community.

We hope the FCT Administration would fulfil their promise to rehabilitate the road as soon as possible.

The FCT Police could not be reached for comment on Sunday, as the Command spokesman, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, failed to respond to several calls to his phone.

Politics / Aisha Buhari Confirms Video Of Her Ranting In Aso Rock by Maniagist: 1:53pm On Oct 13, 2019
Aisha, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, on Sunday, confirmed a viral video that showed her ranting about a locked door in the presidential villa.

Mrs Buhari returned to Nigeria at about 4.30am on Sunday, after having been away on holiday in the United Kingdom, UK.

She relocated to the UK after an earlier trip to Saudi Arabia.

In a chat with newsmen, Aisha said she was the one in the footage.

It was gathered that Aisha got angry after a disagreement with Mamman Daura, the president’s cousin, some months ago.

In the clip, Aisha said: “This is the villa. We have over 200 soldiers guarding us, over 200 policemen. Why do you have to lock this door? What for, what for? Enough is enough. Let me know when you are leaving this place, let me know”

Speaking, the president’s wife said: “The video was an old video. The event happened. It was me…actually, it happened in the villa.”

The First Lady, however, said she was happy to be home,

Aisha returned amid rumors that her husband allegedly planned to marry the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster and Management, Sadiya Umar Farouq.

Celebrities / BBN 2019 Winner; Being A Millionaire Won’t Affect My Relationship "Mercy Says" by Maniagist: 7:43am On Oct 13, 2019
The winner of the fourth season of Big Brother Naija, Mercy Eke, has insisted that her relationship with a fellow housemate, Ike Onyema, would continue to go on smoothly. The two were fond of each other in the House.

Mercy waved aside the insinuation that since she was now richer than Onyema, she might want to explore other options.

She said, “I was single before going into the House. But now, you should expect love and friendship (between me and Ike). We would work as partners. Money has nothing to do with the love we share. Money has nothing to do with our relationship; it won’t affect us.

On what endeared her to him, Mercy said, “Ike is a special person. It is something beyond what I can understand– it was just in him. I think every girl in the House liked him too. I realised that I had feelings for him about the fifth week in the house.

Eke also maintained that she flaunted her body while in the House because she was confident in her own skin. She stated, “I feel every woman should be at peace with their body. I was comfortable with my body and that was it for me.

The graduate of Imo State University noted that her focus, for now, would be on her business interests. “My first duty is my business– establishing my clothing brand and putting it out there. But, I want to take things slowly; I am not trying to rush.

The immediate thing is for me to nurture my clothing brand and after that, any other thing can follow,” she added.

Politics / We’re Winning War Against Kidnappers "Gov Ortom Says" by Maniagist: 7:31pm On Oct 05, 2019
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom on Saturday reassured the Igbo community and other Nigerians doing business in the state that the current massive onslaught against criminals is yielding results and cases of kidnapping will soon become history.

The Igbo community in recent times had raised the alarm over the kidnap of Igbo traders in the state and added that hundreds of millions of Naira have so far been paid as ransom.

Ortom, who reassured the Igbo community in the state of adequate security said that the combined forces of the army, police and other security agencies had intensified operations particularly in crime flashpoints and success is being recorded.

The governor who gave the assurance in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, stated that the recent crackdown on a kidnappers’ hideout at Gbatse in Ushongo Local Government Area where the kingpin and his gang were apprehended was a result of the collaboration between his administration and security operatives.

The governor described as misleading, the statement published in some national dailies claiming that Igbos in Benue State were targets of “coordinated attacks and threats of annihilation.

The Governor stresses that armed robbers and kidnappers do not recognize ethnicity. They target any individual or group for ransom and other forms of extortion. In Benue, like any other state, people of different ethnic groups have fallen victim to kidnappers.

Governor Ortom states that what government and security agencies require from all stakeholders is support through intelligence gathering to enable them to guarantee the safety of lives and property.

The governor re-emphasises the resolve of his administration to sustain the fight against criminal elements and urges the people of the state to go about their normal businesses.

To address the security concerns the Igbo community in Benue State recently raised, Governor Ortom will soon meet with the leadership and other stakeholders of the group.

He encourages representatives of Ndi Igbo in the state to attend the meeting with suggestions on ways of deepening the current security strategies as they affect their members,” parts of the statement read.

Politics / Over 90 Percent Of Schools In Kogi State Have No Infrastructures, "ASUSS Says" by Maniagist: 7:18pm On Oct 05, 2019
Over 90 percent of schools in Kogi State have deficient infrastructures, poor or non-existence laboratories, and libraries with out of date books.

The Kogi State Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, ASUSS, Comrade Ranti Ojo made this known while speaking at the occasion marking this years World Teacher’s Day in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital.

Comrade Ojo while calling on the state government to declare a state of emergency in secondary education in the state to steer it away from the direction where it is now heading also hinted that, there is shortages of teachers in all schools all over the state.

He told the governor that, the state of schools in the state calls for urgent attention of the government for the sake of the future generation to which the state belonged.

The ASUSS Chairman lamented that instructional materials are no longer known as part of schools’ necessities while sports and extracurricular activities have for long been forgotten as part of schools’ routine.

“We have been making this call year in year out, yet no government has deemed it necessary to heed our calls. We make the call again today believing that this government that has education as one of its thematic area of focus will urgently take steps to do the needful,” he said.

Responding, the Kogi state Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello promised to ensure adequate and enhanced welfare package for teachers in the employment of the state for greater productivity.

The governor who was represented by his Chief of Staff and running mate in the November 16 governorship election in the state, Edward Onoja, said his administration would continue to sustain regular payment of salaries not only to teachers, but to all other categories of workers in the employment of Kogi State.

He said his government has concluded arrangements to employ 3,500 teachers to address shortage of personnel in public schools in the state.
