Politics / You Threatened Me Over Gay Marriage” "Jonathan Exposes Ex-uk PM, Cameron" by Maniagist: 3:18pm On Oct 05, 2019
Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has revealed that the Former Prime minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, used envoys to ‘threaten’ him over his refusal to pass laws legalising Gay Marriage in Nigeria.

As President of Nigeria at that time, I came under almost unbearable pressure from the Cameron administration to pass legislation supporting LGBTQ Same-Sex marriage in Nigeria. My conscience could not stomach that, because as President of Nigeria, I swore on the Bible to advance Nigeria’s interests, and not the interest of the United Kingdom or any foreign power.

As such, on Monday, January 13, 2014, I signed the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill into law after the Bill had been passed by an overwhelming bipartisan majority of Nigeria’s parliament, in line with the wishes of the Nigerian people.

This happened shortly after a study of 39 nations around the world by the U.S. Pew Research Center came up with a finding which indicated that 98 per cent of Nigerians were opposed to the idea of Gay Marriage.”

Immediately after I took this patriotic action, my government came under almost unbearable pressure from Mr. Cameron, who reached me through envoys, and made subtle and not so subtle threats against me and my government.

In fact, meetings were held at the Obama White House and at the Portcullis House in Parliament UK, with the then Nigerian opposition to disparage me, after I had signed the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill into law.

Politics / South Africa May Compensate Nigerians Affected In Xenophobic Attacks by Maniagist: 5:26pm On Oct 04, 2019
Nigerians who lost property in recent xenophobic attacks might be compensated after South Africa and Nigeria agreed to set up a committee on compensation.

Both countries agreed to set up a committee on compensation, wide range of bilateral issues were reviewed, assurances gotten, early warning mechanism to be established,” a presidential spokesman Ayo Akanji said on Friday.

South Africa had rejected demands from Nigeria for compensation after recent anti-foreigners attack. South African officials have indicated that the country will not agree to any demands for official compensation for damage suffered by Nigerian nationals.

They said these Nigerians should seek restitution from their insurance companies — just as South African companies whose properties were damaged in the retaliatory attacks in Nigeria should seek compensation from their insurance companies and not the Nigerian government.

They also said Pretoria had rejected similar demands after eruptions of xenophobic violence in 2008 and 2015.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari met his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa, weeks after xenophobic attacks in Johannesburg triggered tensions between the Africa’s leading economies.

Nigerians were among those targeted during the wave of violence which resulted in the death of 12 people. Over 600 Nigerians were repatriated following the attacks.

On Thursday, Buhari said the attacks were “unacceptable” and called for preventive measures.

As the government of South Africa, we have expressed our deep regret at the attacks directed at foreign nationals and our condemnation of all forms of intolerance and acts of violence,” Ramaphosa told journalists.

Ramaphosa said the two countries had sealed 32 bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding covering trade and industry, science and technology, defence, agriculture and energy.

On the early warning mechanism, Ramaphosa said an “early warning mechanisms will be set up so that when we see there is restiveness in both of our people … we will be able to inform one another.

We are equally committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all those involved in criminal activities, regardless of their nationality, are prosecuted,” he added.

Nigeria accounts for 64 percent of South Africa’s total trade with the West African Region and is one of its largest trading partners on the continent.

Crime / LAUTECH Crisis: Unions Are Used Against Osun Govt -oyetola’s Aide by Maniagist: 4:52pm On Oct 04, 2019
The Chief Press Secretary to the Osun State Governor, Ismael Omipidan On Friday accused members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, as well as its sister union, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso of being used to antagonise the state government.

Although, he did not mention those using the union against the state, but added that the state would resist every attempt to blackmail it.

Omipidan added that the unions had denied all the allegations it raised against the state when the governor met it recently.

Speaking on private radio programme in the state capital, he said the union is taking advantage of the governor’s civil and gentle nature, as well as the fact that he runs from controversy however little.

I will advise the unions not to take it for granted. Last week Wednesday, we read in the paper that ASUU had singled out Osun state government for being responsible for the delay of their salaries.

Thursday we held a meeting which had Olaniyan Olatunji and Adeniyi Adediran as representatives for ASUU and NASU and they both disowned the report in the newspapers vehemently.

The Vice Chancellor also came with a purpoted prepared communique and in it, there was nowhere it was said the state government was responsible for owing salaries. We put it to them that now that they are denying the story, go out there and issue a rejoinder”.

Rather than do this, ASUU came up with a statement saying Osun is not aware that Oyo has been funding LAUTECH teaching hospital in Ogbomoso. How else can you conclude these groups are being mischievous and being used “.

Omipidan said that despite having seven of the eight faculties in the university in Oyo among other lopsidedness the osun has never failed in its responsibilities.

He said the University had gotten a grant of N3B from Tetfund and all the projects would be executed in Ogbomoso, saying inspite of all these the Osun state government has never complained.

According to him, Oyo state embarked on building another teaching hospital in Ogbomoso without the consent of the other owner state, saying such action means it has enough money to take care of such venture.

However, Joel Oyewande, who spoke on behalf of NASU denied being used by anyone, stressing that the two state governments, especially Osun, need to pay salaries owed the union members or tell the world if they do not have the means to do the right thing.

Why is it that when it gets to the turn of Osun state government, they will be complaining? They only paid us in July while Oyo state paid all it dues from January to June”.

They have started again. Do they want to kill us? Why are they politicising everything? If they don’t have money let them tell us. If they want to relinquish their joint ownership let them do it. Let them quit if they can no longer fund the University”.

Also we have indigenes of Osun and other states in LAUTECH in Ogbomoso while the teaching hospital in Osun has only Osun Indigenes working there”, he added.

The Golden Eaglets are expected to depart Nigeria for Sao Paulo, Brazil October 8 for their final preparation for the 2019 U-17 World Cup.

According to coach Manu Garba, the team will play two friendly games before he announces his final squad for the tournament.

The team will travel with 30 players to afford Garba assess all the players before making a decision on his final 21-man squad to represent Nigeria at the U-17 World Cup.

The UEFA/CAF tournament was a good exposure for the boys, they faced stiff oppositions in Turkey. The games against Turkey, Guatemala and Senegal were good tests for the boys,”

We learnt a lot from the tournament as it was a perfect ground to test the players which also gave the technical crew an opportunity to see some errors in the team.”

The five-time winners will face Hungary, Ecuador and Australia in Group B at the tournament billed to hold from October 26 to November 17 in Brazil.

Three suspected kidnappers meet their demise as angry mob sets them on fire after they attempted to kidnap a young female at the Dutse Alhaji area in Abuja.

The suspects were three young men and a female victim, who has been rushed to Kubwa General Hospital for treatment.

At the scene of the incident, a Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) officer, Mr. Aminu Umar, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the incident happened at about 8:00 a.m. when a lady inside moving vehicle was heard screaming for help.

The lady was suddenly pushed out of the vehicle while screaming. A motorist, who saw what had happened, pulled over in front of the vehicle and blocked it under the Dutse Bridge. From there, Okada riders (motorcyclists) surrounded the vehicle and told them to come out.

They asked them if the vehicle was one chance (kidnappers) and the next thing, they started beating them and eventually put fire on them and the vehicle,” he explained.

Mr. Sylvanus Ekpenyong, Route Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) said that his men were alerted of the event by some people while on duty at Dutse.

We were at Dutse junction and we got information that there was traffic building up before the Dutse Bridge because a vehicle was on fire.

We rushed down there to clear the road only to see three dead burnt bodies and a burnt vehicle.

When we made inquiries from eyewitnesses, they said it was one chance (kidnappers). So we are here to ensure free traffic flow of vehicles but we don’t know the exact group of people who burnt them,” he said.

An eye witness who is also a motorcyclist, Mr. Aliyu Mohammed said that angry motorcyclists attacked and burnt the suspects because it was obvious they were kidnappers as described by the victim.

Mohammed said that it was the normal tactics of kidnappers operating in Abuja to push victims out of their moving vehicle after carrying out their illegal activities.

He, however, said that the incident of today would serve as a warning to all those involved in such activities within the territory.

Security agents were on ground to ensure the bodies of the suspects were evacuated to a nearby mortuary as they ensured peace and free flow of vehicles in the area.

My parents are loving. They tried all they could to make us happy and comfortable. They always gave us whatever we wanted. Whenever I remember how my parents cared for me when I was younger, it makes me happy.

I had my elementary education at Zik Avenue Primary School, Enugu State. For my secondary education, I attended Queens School, also in Enugu. I then went to the Enugu State University of Science and Technology.

The industry is a crazy place where you might have a pure heart towards your fellow human but most of them don’t love you in return. Your prosperity becomes a problem for them. It has not been easy but I am a very hardworking woman.

With determination, consistency, perseverance and God, I believe anyone will pull through. If you have a God who stands with you, you are nothing but a conqueror.

On the industry not being lucrative, I will tell you for free that for beginners, it doesn’t pay well. But when one starts making waves and has commercial value, one’s pay increases.

My parents were supportive. My mother actually introduced me to the craft as a child. Thereafter, I went to school. When I wanted to continue, I told her and she gave me her blessings. My parents are so proud of me today.

I can’t really remember the first movie I acted in, because I was in JSS 1 then. However when I was in my third year in the university, I saw movie practitioners shooting a movie, and I decided to check them out.

I saw the late Ifeanyi Udokwu. He got my number and featured me in a couple of films.

In 2012, I did my first movie titled, Idemili. It was written and directed by Ernest Obi. The movie brought me into prominence.

One of the challenges I faced was that people couldn’t fathom the fact that I came into the industry and just wanted to start acting.

I was stopped by a woman that used to be my mother’s friend. She told me I would have to register. I felt because my mother was already in the industry, it would be an automatic ticket for me.

Secondly, most of the times when I got picked at auditions, a producer or director may not want one to play the role, because they intended to give it to their girlfriends.

Also, if a director or producer likes you, and the feeling is not mutual, they will resort to frustrating you, making you feel that you don’t know what you are doing.

At a time, the challenges were almost too much for me. It was after I produced a movie that announced me to the world that everything changed

Everybody cannot like you. When I built a house for my mother, people started saying all sorts of nonsense, questioning me about who gave me money to build the house.

Also, when I bought a Toyota Venza last year, people asked who got me the car. Somebody works hard, another person sees her hard work and tries to support her, and I don’t know why that becomes a problem. Initially, I used to get angry over such comments, but now, I know better.

If you are not being spoken about, it means you are not relevant. I am on my lane thinking of how to improve my life. Gone are those days I got scared when people called me names.

The only roles I will love to get are international ones in Hollywood. If you are talking about Nigeria, I actually have roles pursuing me. I have got enough.

As a popular actor, people always want you to pay more for things. One wouldn’t be free to do the things one used to do. For example, there is a place I used to make my hair and fix my nails in a market, and they were very good. But, I can’t go to the market again to fix my nails.

I had to look for somewhere else though those people may not be as good as my customer in the market. Fame robs one of basic things that any other person would have done.

Nollywood is one, though it seems like the industry is divided. Lagos people want ‘to do’ Lagos, while those in the east want to stay in their region.

When I get jobs in Lagos, I go and return to my base. There is a point I will get to that I will have to consider moving to Lagos, but I cannot move now.

Most of the jobs I get are from the east. I hardly have a day of rest there. I can only move to Lagos or Abuja, If eventually I get a man for myself.

Sex is a subject that people have different understanding about. For me, I have my own understanding of sex. Whether they are hypocritical about it or not is really not my business.

I had prepared to go somewhere when a fan saw me and pop champagne all over my body and vehicle. He said he was a super fan that loved me.

It was exciting and at the same time, it ruined my day. I was actually going for an important appointment, dressed in a white outfit. I had to go back home to change.

My physique gets me the most attention. I believe that was why I was endorsed as a brand ambassador for ‘Killer Curves’.

I like a guy who is tall, dark and loves me. I love attention a lot so I like a guy who wants to know what is wrong with me whenever my mood changes. I love a guy who will support my career because getting to where I am today hasn’t been easy.

I pray that God gives me a man who understands me and supports my career. I don’t want a man that will destroy what I have built over the years.

The car was actually given to me as a birthday gift. I work so hard and make my money, but for now, I cannot use my money to buy such a car. It was a gift from a loved one.

I love to dress classy. I love clothes that show my killer curves.

Crime / 58-year Old Farmer Jailed 10 Years For Raping, Impregnating Teenage Daughter by Maniagist: 4:20pm On Sep 27, 2019
Justice Muslim Hassan of a Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday sentenced a 58-year old farmer, Yesiru Onajobi, to a jail term of 10 years for rape and defilement of his teenage daughter.

The Judge, who noted the rising wave of rape in the society, ordered that the convict would serve 10 years imprisonment without option of fine.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the convict, a resident of Bogije St., Ibeju, in Lekki Lagos, was charged to court in 2011 on a two-count charge of having carnal knowledge of his 13-year-old daughter.

He was prosecuted by The National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons (NAPTIP).

The Prosecutor, (NAPTIP), had told the court that after the death of Onaboji’s wife, he took custody of his only daughter who is a twin, while her brother was with relatives.

The convict was said to have engaged in repeated sexual adventures with his daughter, with whom he shared the same bed and restrained her movement or interaction with neighbours.

Although the convict had pleaded not guilty to the charge, the case suffered some setbacks and adjournments as he had no legal representation for several months while he was in custody.

The trial, however, subsequently commenced after a lawyer was provided for the convict from the Legal Aid Council.

In his lengthy judgement on Friday, Hassan gave a detailed analysis of the facts of the case as reflected in the charge and the various arguments as canvased by respective parties.

The court expressed dissatisfaction at the high rate of rape, defilement, assault and sexual abuse of the girl child, which had become prevalent in the society.

The issue for determination as formulated by counsel, can be summed into one, and that is whether the prosecution has proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Proof beyond a reasonable doubt is not proof beyond any shadow of a doubt; once an ingredient of the offence is proved, it is sufficient proof,” he said.

Hassan held that it was difficult to disbelieve the evidence of the victim who he said gave a vivid account of the incidences, adding that her testimony remained constant at all times.

The evidence of PW1 was consistent both in her examination-in-chief and under cross-examination.

PW 2 also corroborated this evidence and the defendant did not produce any evidence to prove his denial.

I believe the evidence of PW1 and I hold that the prosecution has been able to prove its case.

I hereby convict you, Yesiru Onajobi, on this charge and I call for allocutus,”

After listening to a very brief allocutus (plea for mercy) by defence counsel who urged the court to temper justice with mercy, the court held that the charge against the convict was a serious one.

The right of custody of a child does not extend to abuse as done in this charge.

The offence of defilement and child molestation is becoming rampant in our society, as one cannot leave his child under the care of his neighbour.

I hereby sentence you, Yesiru Onajobi to 10 years imprisonment each on counts one and two, without an option of fine.

The terms shall run concurrently from the date of arrest,” he said

Politics / New Minimum Wage: TUC Urge FG To Begin Payment by Maniagist: 4:11pm On Sep 27, 2019
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) on Friday urged the Federal Government to urgently conclude discussion on the new minimum wage and commence implementation across board.

The TUC Chairman, Lagos State Chapter, Mr Gbenga Ekundayo, made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

Ekundayo said that the union had condemned the segmental implementation of the minimum wage for grade levels one to six.

Ekundayo said: “The government implemented for grade levels one to six, leaving grades level seven upwards out, and we are still discussing around the consequential adjustment and relativity impact.

It needs to be quickly dealt with, concluded; what needs to be done is to go to the negotiation table, discuss these issues and let us have implementation for all the workers.”

Also, the union Secretary, Mr Abiodun Aladetan, expressed displeasure over the delay of the implementation of the minimum wage.

Aladetan said that it was the duty of government to address the issues in the interest of the workers.

It is unfortunate where we are on the minimum wage; recently, the Minister of Labour acknowledged that the government had commenced payment for those on grade levels one to six.

This could create division within the labour circle and as a labour movement, we condemn it; it will not deter us, but have a ripple effect on the system.

We call on government, as a matter of urgency, to discuss with labour; come to terms with these realities by accepting the demands of the labour movement,Aladetan said.

Education / UNILAG Suggestions; Undergraduates Seek Stiffer Sanctions For Cruel Lecturers by Maniagist: 7:03am On Sep 26, 2019
Despite several attempts by various tertiary institutions in the country to tame the unprincipled activities of some lecturers who take excessive advantage of their female students, sexual harassments in universities still persist.

Unfortunately, the societal backlash towards victims of rape and sexual harassment has silenced many students who will receive condemnation upon speaking out rather than justice.

However, some undergraduates who are saddened by the situation have suggested that stiffer sanction from government to the culprit is one sure way of curtailing the act.

They said if government at different levels have used one lecturer as a scapegoat, others would have learnt their lessons, and begin to see their students as their younger sisters or even their daughters.

A mass communication student at Ebonyi State University (EBSU), who pleaded anonymity, affirmed that lecturers still harass students directly and indirectly in their campus.

According to her, Some are so stupid about it, while some are smart. The stupid ones will make you understand how you won’t fail their courses and how important it is graduating with good grades.

They will lure and pressurise you to the point of willingly giving in to their demands and having your peace, which is very sad. And then, they move on to another student, depending on their interest.

While the smart ones, will, first of all, psych you to know whether you are interested or principled. Whatever the outcome of their analysis is, if they truly want you, they will surely get you.

The fear of carryover has made a lot of students to succumb to lecturers. This is outside those that are actually interested in such lecturers. But we have discovered that most times, the lecturers prefer the reserved students.

I try as much as possible to keep a low-profile in school because once a lecturer or a student that is close to a lecturer notices you, it may spell trouble for you.

I have friends that lecturers threaten to fail because they like them and they want to have sex with them.

Even with the management’s threat that whoever that is caught exploiting students will be severely punished, lecturers still harass students sexually.

Our appeal is that government should do more, maybe they should pronounce stiffer measures and implement it on those caught and proven guilty, probably it may end it,” Lawal said.

Oyebola Opeyemi from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), said lecturers regularly threaten most students especially the females if they refuse to yield to their advances.

I have seen cases where lecturers threaten female students that if they tell anyone, they would have to spend an extra year.

Victory Johnson said, one of the reasons lecturers do that without a second thought is because they know that should the student report to the school authority, nothing will happen. The school authority will definitely take sides with the lecturer and turn the table against the students.

A student who wished to remain anonymous, said, “my lecturer went as far as failing me in my examination so that I can be visiting his office regularly, so he will have his way.”

She recalled that it came to a point that the lecturer began to comment about her curves even when she wore loose clothes.

A certain day, he drew her bra strap, even when my blouse left no trace of it, it was that bad.”

Suggesting measure to abate the act, Daniel Marakwe, a student of UNILAG, stressed the need for students to have mentors or counselors that they can freely go and talk to at any time”.

Akande Timothy, also a UNILAG suggested that awareness and sensitisation programmes would give victims the opportunity to speak up and get help.

Education / UNIPORT Student Wins UNILAG Vc’s Innovation Challenge by Maniagist: 6:55am On Sep 26, 2019
A 100-level student of Electrical Electronics of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Augustine Udo-Olisa, has emerged winner of the maiden edition of Professor Ogundipe Innovation Challenge (POIC).

POIC is an initiative of the vice chancellor of University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, as part of his humanitarian activities to promote national growth and development, and it is open to all Nigerian university students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Udo-Olisa defeated 10 others from other universities across the country who made it to the finals, and was given N1 million to further develop his business idea into profitable venture that will benefit mankind.

He won the star prize with his technological device named ‘Daltech 4 All Security’, at the grand finale of the competition held at the Jelili Omotola Multipurpose Hall of UNILAG recently.

Explaining the functions of the technology device, Udo-Olisa said ‘Daltech 4 All Security’ is designed to safeguard valuables and assist security agencies to authenticate distress calls.

He said the idea came the day he witnessed a road accident and no help immediately came for the victims.

Udo-Olisa explained: “I felt too bad about the incident, especially as no help came the way of the victims. That was how I started to think on what could save people in similar situations in the future.

I then created a device that when you open a car door, it will call the person; and when the person calls back, it will shut down the ignition system. And if the car has an accident, it will call the rescue agencies such as the Fire Service and police.

If the device is installed in a house or office and there is a fire incident, it will automatically make a distress call to the fire service or police or the owner.”

Expressing excitement about his accomplishment, Udo-Olisa said he had failed many times before he finally came up with the device.

However, he expressed sadness that two teammates could not join him for the competition because of a registration error on his part.

He said he registered as the only member of ‘Team Solution’ in error and could not correct it when he tried to do so. That was why the others could not come to the grand finale.

The first runner-up in the competition was ‘Team Veta’ which developed a digital platform where students can learn technical and vocational skills, and after training, find jobs on the same platform.

The second runner-up was ‘Team Brickify’ which designed rubber bricks for constructing movable structures.

Each of them also got N1 million to further develop their ideas.

In his remarks at the event, the initiator of the competition, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, said he was particularly impressed by the performance of the winning teams.

He said he introduced the competition to encourage and support scientific creativity among university students which can help solve the country’s problems in agriculture, oil and gas, information and communication technology, computer and other related fields.

Professor Ogundipe urged students to take advantage of the competition to develop themselves to become entrepreneurs right from school and become globally competitive in their chosen fields.

Crime / One Dead As Police Clash With Suspected Cult Groups In Delta Community by Maniagist: 3:03pm On Sep 25, 2019
A yet to be identified person was on Tuesday feared dead after Policemen from Ovwian/Aladja Division in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State allegedly clashed with suspected cultists at Express junction.

It was gathered that during the rival cult clash, the victim’s group had allegedly opened fire on the Police who had gone to the area to calm the situation.

However, the Police repelled the gun attacks and in the process, the suspected cultist was gunned down while others fled the scene.

When contacted, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Adeyinka Adeleke, in a telephone chat with Our Correspondent confirmed the report.

CP Adeyinka said, “Cultists clashed with Police and one was shot dead. The person is a cultist”

The Vice Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, Hon. Justice Iyasere, who spoke on behalf of the Chairman in a telephone chat with Our Correspondent said,

Before resuming this morning, I went to the Police Station where I had a brief meeting with the DPO.

He never mentioned such to me. So, I wouldn’t be able to confirm anything with regards to this matter now. Perhaps, when I get any information, I will get back to you.

The incident occurred barely a week after the Udu Council imposed a dusk to dawn curfew in about six communities to check the menace of cultists and their criminal activities.
