President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday August 15, commissioned the Air Force Reference hospital at his hometown Daura in Katsina State.

Commissioning of the new health facility which the President described as a critical milestone recorded by the nation’s armed forces, had Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State, Governor Ganduje of Kano state, Perm Sec. Defence Mrs Nuratu Batagarawa, Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State and Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar in attendance.

Speaking at the event, President Buhari revealed that the Federal Government invested huge resources in the health sector in the last 4 years which include an increased budgetary allocation to the sector from N259 billion in 2015 to N340 billion in 2018.

Accordingly, significant stride has been made to life expectancy and reduced some of the killer diseases associated with child and maternal mortality claiming 70 death per 100,000 and 90 persons by the year 2007 as explained in the United Nations sustainable development goals.

Despite this, more efforts are needed to fill in the wide range of diseases and remain persistent in the emerging health issues in our society.

To achieve this, we must now reveal effort to focus on providing more efficient funding on the health sector” he said.

Five-times champions Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja got their camping programme for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup finals holding in Brazil from Oct. 26 to Nov. 17.

The Golden Eaglets had picked a ticket to the competition after finishing among the top four teams at the Africa Under-17 Cup of Nations in Tanzania in April.

“Head Coach Manu Garba has called up 52 players who were expected to arrive in Abuja on Tuesday (Aug. 13),” Ademola Olajire, the Director of Communications at Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), announced in a statement on Tuesday.

Garba was the head coach of the Nigerian squad which won Nigeria’s fourth title in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2013.

The Golden Eaglets also triumphed at 1985, 1993, 2007 and 2015 championships in China, Japan, Korea Republic, and Chile respectively.

The Anambra Police Command on Tuesday confirmed that one person died, while seven others sustained injuries when hoodlums tried to prevent its operatives from arresting fleeing criminals in Onitsha metropolis.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the casualty figures, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the incident occurred at about 1pm at Obosi New Park, Onitsha.

There was an intelligence report that some suspects who escaped from custody were seen at that place and the Police mobilised and went there to make arrests.

They were, however, stopped by some hoodlums who attempted to disarm a policeman.

The policeman tried to liberate himself from them, but they refused. So he had to use his firearm and, unfortunately, it hit one of them.

The victim was rushed to a hospital but he was confirmed dead,” Mohammed said.

NAN reports that the hoodlums, who became angry at the death of the man, went on the rampage, blocking the Onitsha-Owerri road.

Although their activities disrupted vehicular movement for about 45 minutes, it took the intervention of reinforced Police team and the local security guards to disperse the rampaging hoodlums.

So far, the area is calm and the Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation to ascertain the cause of the incident,” Mohammed added.

The Police spokesman declined comment on whether the wanted criminals were later rearrested.

Followers of Ibraheem El-Zakyzaky have accused the Nigerian government and American secret service of frustrating the medical treatment of their leader at Madenta Hospital, New Delhi, India.

The group revealed this on Tuesday in Abuja in a press statement signed by the Secretary of Academic Forum of the movement, Abdullahi Musa.

He stated that the security agents, who accompanied El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat, have connived with foreign security agents and threatened the management of the hospital not to admit him for treatment.

The statement added that the agents believed to be working with US Embassy in India have perfected plans to frustrate the medical treatment.

The statement read in part, "Reports reaching us from the hospital indicate that the security agents are colluding with foreign security agents believed to be working for the American Government.

"Earlier, even before the Sheikh arrived at the hospital, we gathered from competent source that officials of US Embassy in India instructed management of the hospital not to admit him there for treatment."

The sect, however, called on international community and people of conscience to prevail on the Nigerian Government and it's western masters to stop playing with the life of their leader and allow him access to the treatment.

Musa added, "We are calling on the international community and people of conscience and humanity, especially those that facilitated the trip of the Sheikh to India for treatment to prevail on the Nigerian Government and it's allies to stop playing with the life of our leader."

El-Zakzaky departed Nigeria on Monday to India aboard Emirates Airlines and was escorted by officers from National Intelligence Agency as well as his family members .

The Registrar and Chief Executive, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Prof. Segun Ajiboye on Monday said it has written to the National Youth Service Corp Director-General to stop posting graduates without education degrees to teach in schools.

Ajiboye lamented that most of those posted to teach in the mandatory one year scheme do not have the qualification to teach.

Ajiboye noted that the education system gets bastardised when unqualified persons without requisite professional skills are deployed to teach.

He noted that there are challenges of having qualified teachers in some states of the federation.

Ajiboye stated this in Ibadan while speaking with journalists on transforming education which is the theme of the 2019 International Youth day.

He, however, stressed that the majority of those teaching in private nursery and primary schools nationwide do not have the qualification to teach.

Ajiboye also emphasised that those qualified must still be registered and professionally certified and licensed by the Council.

According to him, only qualified and well trained and re-trained teachers can bring about a transformed education that the Nigerian youth can benefit from.

We have written a letter to the NYSC Director-general that only those who read Education should be posted to schools during their service year. This will ensure that only round pegs are deployed in round holes. Why are Doctors not posted to teach?

Why are Education graduates not deployed in hospitals to operate the sick? If you cannot allow a teacher to treat you in the hospital why should you allow a fake teacher to teach your children and destroy their future? We should not debase the teaching profession.

State governors must also ensure that they train and re-train those in their schools. Human capital development must be taken seriously to transform our education system,” Ajiboye added.,

South Africans are not responsible for the deaths of Nigerians in the country a senior official of South Africa’s High Commission in Nigeria said on Sunday.

The counselor in charge of political Affair at the south African high Commission in Abuja Anna-Maria Jojozi said such claims were unwarranted.

I wish to express my department’s concern regarding statements said to emanate from student organisation in Nigeria, calling for expulsion of South Africans and protests at South African owned businesses,” Jojozi said.

The protests are said to be in response to alleged killings of Nigerians by South Africans; as you are aware these allegations are devoid of truth, reckless and unwarranted,” Jojozi.

The National Association of Nigerian Students had said they can no longer keep quiet while South Africans kill Nigerians in their country as they call for the expulsion of South African businesses from Nigeria.

The protest which was slated to hold in all the 36 states in Nigeria followed the killings of no fewer than 118 Nigerians in xenophobic attacks in South Africa over the years.

On July 15, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, also condemned the continuous killings of Nigerians in South Africa, warning that the government will no longer tolerate further attacks on its citizens.

I believe we have faced enough, we will no longer take it anymore,” Lawan said when he hosted the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Bobby Moroe in Abuja in July.

We want to write the names of Nigerians killed, and the South African parliament must act fast to put a stop to this menace.”

Jojozi, however, insisted that xenophobic allegations and call for the expulsion of South African businesses from Nigeria does not reflect the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.

She said that the killings allegations statement is the “most unfortunate” and “devoid of truth” as they do not reflect the strong relations that exist between the two countries.
