Microsoft co-founder commissions eco vessel expected to go to sea in 2024 in latest sign of his interest in alternative fuels

The software tycoon Bill Gates has commissioned the world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht, in a £500m signal of his belief that investment in new clean technology is the best way to cut carbon emissions.

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal that the retired 64-year-old is behind the construction of a cutting-edge vessel by the Dutch superyacht specialist Feadship.

The custom build is based on blueprints for the 112-metre design "Aqua" publicised last year at the Monaco Yacht Show by the Dutch marine architects Sinot to draw environmentally sensitive billionaires. It said the plans took “inspiration from the lifestyle of a discerning, forward-looking owner

Mr Gates, who co-founded Microsoft and is currently ranked as the world’s second-richest man, is a regular superyacht holidaymaker but has not previously owned his own vessel and has preferred to rent during summer trips around the Mediterranean.

His new vessel, which is scheduled to go to sea in 2024, will not measure up to some of the world’s largest pleasure cruisers, such as the 163-metre Eclipse commissioned by Roman Abramovich, the oligarch and owner of Chelsea football club.

Mr Gates will however gain bragging rights over other ultra-rich seafarers as the owner of the world’s only hydrogen-powered superyacht, which industry sources estimate will cost about half a billion pounds.

The designs for Aqua include two 28-ton vacuum-sealed tanks to store liquid hydrogen at minus 252 Celsius. The fuel will be used to generate power for the two one-megawatt motors and the passengers via fuel cells, which combine hydrogen with oxygen from the air to produce only electricity and water.

Sinot claims the system offers a top speed of 17 knots, cruising speed of 10 to 12 knots and range of 3750 nautical miles, more than enough to cover an Atlantic crossing from New York to Southampton.

The acquisition is the latest sign of Mr Gates's longstanding interest in alternative fuels. He is an investor in Heliogen, a California start-up that uses smart software to control an array of mirrors that focuses the sun’s rays to generate extreme heat. It aims to create a clean source of hydrogen gas by splitting water molecules without the use of fossil fuels.

Most hydrogen is currently produced by processes that rely on fossil fuels and produce carbon dioxide. It is possible, although much more expensive, to use electricity from renewable sources to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Mr Gates, who has pledged to give most of his estimated $118bn fortune to good causes via the Gates Foundation, has argued that investment in new energy systems is a better way to cut carbon emissions than forcing investors to pull out of oil companies when the economy must still rely on fossil fuels to some extent.

Last year he said: “By investing in energy innovations, we can build on the progress we’ve made deploying current technology like renewables, which will help accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to a future of reliable and affordable carbon-free electricity.

We need big breakthroughs in technologies that will allow us to supply the power grid with clean energy even during windless days, cloudy weather, and nighttime.

Bill Gates has a longstanding interest in alternative fuels

Despite Mr Gates’ enthusiasm for hydrogen power, shipbuilding sources said that the plans for his superyacht include diesel back-up due to the scarcity of hydrogen refuelling stations. It is understood the project includes plans to establish facilities at the superyacht’s home port, however.

Mr Gates’s plans for the vessel’s accommodation are unclear, but in the marketing materials for Aqua the designers suggest an armoured glass window to view the liquid hydrogen tanks and a gym with "massive, gym-wide hatch which opens to reveal the ocean’s surface at water level, creating the perception of exercising and relaxing on an island in the sea"

The concept also includes a “spectacular, extremely spacious” owner’s pavilion, occupying the front half of the upper deck and offering “an abundance of privacy”. Meanwhile “the VIP cabin and other state rooms are focused on openness, luxury and comfort, providing a maximum sense of freedom in a highly detailed minimalist Japanese beach-style setting”, according to Sinot.

Olunloyo advised the multi-award winning singer to do commercials for the time being.

Emmanuel Gyang and his wife, Deborah Pam, have emerged as the first Nigerians to complete the 42km race at the 2020 Lagos City Marathon.

It was reports that Gyang, who was the fist male Nigerian, finished 33rd overall with a time of 2:25.30secs.

Pam was the first female Nigerian to get to finish in her category, finishing 14th overall with a time of 2:45.17secs.

The couple had exactly three weeks after their wedding emerged the first Nigerian finishers in their respective categories at the seventh edition of the Okpekpe 10km International Road Race.

Popularly referred to as Nigeria’s No.1 long-distance couple, Gyan and Pam got married in May 2019.

Gyan, an athlete from Plateau State, also emerged as the first Nigerian at the 2019 Abeokuta Road Race, clocking 31.03secs behind Kenya’s Biwott Alan Kemboi who finished first in 28.76secs.

Winner of the 2020 Lagos City Marathon, David Barmasai Tumo, has broken the marathon’s four-year record in 42km race to win the first prize of $50,000.

He finishing the race in two hours, 10 minutes and 22 seconds, a time lesser than what previous winners had recorded.

In 2016, Abraham Kiptum of Kenya won in 2:16:21 seconds; 2017: Abraham Kiptum, Kenya 2:15:20secs;

2018: Abraham Kiprotich Kenyan-French 2:13:04secs; and in 2019, Sintayehu Legese of Ethiopia breast the finishing tape in 2:17:28secs.

In the female category of 2020 edition, another Kenyan Sharon Cherop came first in 02:31:40secs

Both male and female 42km runners competed for the grand prize of $50,000 while the second and third place winners $40,000 and $30,000 respectively.

However, organisers said after the race that Tumo would get an additional $20,000 for breaking the Lagos Marathon race 42km record, bringing his total earnings to $70,000.

Nigerian Afropop singer, Danny Young, born Ajibola Olumuyiwa Danladi, who made news recently for copyright lawsuit against former Mavin First Lady, Tiwa Savage has debunked the widely held notion that artistes are to be blamed for the upsurge in crap music in the Nigerian music space. While speaking with Star Tracker in an interview he stated reasons artistes cannot really be blamed.

Hear him: “It’s like a disease that has eaten deep into the present generation of music fans. They don’t want to listen to anything reasonable or educative.

If you make sensitive music, you better be ready to double up on the promotion or listen to it alone with your family. But the music with no direction but with danceable beat is all they love.

All artistes are striving for hits and that is the reason everyone makes the same type of sound. Yes, it is not the artistes promoting crap music but the fans because that’s what they want.

Danny Young, born Ajibola Olumuyiwa Danladi, who is also a songwriter, music producer, record label owner, entrepreneur and brand ambassador from Owo local government area of Ondo State singled out the ‘African Giant,’ Burna Boy and refusing to mention others, but admitted there are many others who make good music.

The ones I know that have been doing so much of the right music are not A-list. That is not to say that some of the A-list artistes are not trying, for example, Burna Boy and a few others are doing the right music. My brand of music or genre is Afropop. A good music is when you have the right sound, melody, hook and meaningful lyrics to go with it,” he added.

Danny young came to prominence into prominence in 2006 after releasing his first hit song “Welcome” featuring Lord of Ajasa, off his debut album “The One,” released under the platform of BigDeal Entertainment in 2009.

Tontolet, as she likes to be called, posted this on her Instagram page. “A lot of you come on social media to see people who are having a great time with exotic trips and vacation, and you slip into depression, what you don’t know is that many people plan and save towards their trips.

Some people plan a year before or even two years. A beautiful photo that shows a vacation might be a result of saving for many years. Don’t be deceived into thinking it’s that easy. It is not. Even the flashy cars and houses and phones you see with rich people, they plan and save towards it.

They won’t tell you, all you know is that they just got a house. Go and ask them how long it took to save up, and the sacrifices they made to gather up the finances, See, it’s never really too rosy for people as it seems on social media. Just keep working hard. Save for important things. Save to spoil yourself.

The High Court of the Federal High Court in Nyanya, Abuja on Thursday sentenced one Obinna Echianu to death for killing an Uber driver identified as Edwin Ali in Abuja on December 26, 2016.

Delivering judgment, Justice Peter Kekemeke convicted 42-year-old Echianu for armed robbery and culpable homicide.

But the judge discharged and acquitted Echanu’s co-accused, Everly Nnorom, 27, for lack of evidence.

The police had instituted five counts of conspiracy, armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and culpable homicide against the two men.

However, convicting Echianu of the offences on Thursday, the judge held that the police proved counts of armed robbery and culpable homicide against him beyond reasonable doubt against him.

The first defendant is therefore sentenced to death by hanging on each of the counts,” Justice Kekemeke held.

The police had alleged that Echianu and Nnorom, who was acquitted on Thursday, conspired to rob the deceased Edward Ali beside Goza pedestrian bridge, Airport Road, Abuja, at about 7pm on December 16, 2016.

The prosecution alleged that the two men allegedly armed with a revolver pistol and 33 live ammunition shot and killed Ali.

But while the court believed Nnorom’s defence ending in his acquittal, it dismissed Echianu’s defence and was convicted and sentenced to death on Thursday.

Odion Ighalo will reportedly earn the sum of N1.4bn (£2.98m) during his six months loan spell at Manchester United, Sports Extra can reveal.

As of Thursday, the exchange rate from naira to a British pound sterling was put at N469.41.

Ighalo joined United on loan until the end of the season in a surprise move as a cover upfront for Marcus Rashford, who is facing an extended spell out after suffering a double stress fracture in his back.

The former Nigeria international, who took a pay cut in order to complete his dream deadline day move from Shanghai Shenhua to Manchester United, earns a whopping N60m (£130,000) per week. He earned £300,000 per-week at Shanghai Shenhua.

In a month, the 30-year-old will receive N244m (£520,000) and in his six months at Old Trafford, the former Watford striker will collect N1.4bn (£2.98m) as salary.

Ighalo is currently undergoing a personal fitness programme this week, in a bid to get up to speed, having arrived into Manchester from China last Sunday.

The 30-year-old forward, who will wear the No.25 shirt, is confident he can boost United’s attack, which has struggled without Rashford, who he regards as one of the best in Europe at the moment.

So it turns out that my twin brother has been alive all these years, I got to find out few months ago.

The doctor who delivered us and his wife have been acting as his parents.

I’ve always imagined it all my life, if we were gon be close or not. And to think I’ll never have that answer is so disturbing but I’ll be fine.

They got married 5 years before we were born and had no child of their own.

On the day we were giving birth to my brother couldn’t breathe well and died, that was what they told my parents but it turns out that he survived and the doctor kept it a secret with the two nurses involved during our delivery.

Few months ago I was out and I saw a guy who kinda look like me,I couldn’t resist than to just move close and talk to him, while talking to him I noticed he had a birth mark just like mine and that made me more curious.

I got friendly and made sure we exchanged contacts. We started talking and I asked a lot of questions, I was sure not to make him curious.

I asked for his date of birth, it was the same as mine, the hospital he was born was also the same hospital.

He told me that after his birth was when his parents left the country and they just came back March 2018 because he has been disturbing them he wanted to know where he’s from. I thought of it and I was like maybe God knew it was time for us to meet.

I told my parents about it but they didn’t believe me, my mom was so sure that he died on that day cos she held him, it was so hard to convince them but something in me was so sure that he’s my brother, their supposed dead son.

After all efforts to persuade my parents was successful, I asked to meet his parents too because he adored them a lot which made me more curious. It was actually so hard since they were all busy people but during all this I haven’t told him anything.

On that fateful day I was so tensed, I didn’t know how I was gonna take it if it turns out to be true, I didn’t know how I’d react, I almost didn’t wanna go through with it and then boom his call came in and he told me I shouldn’t be late.

We got to their house, gosh the house was so beautiful and lovely. My twin brother was living large as he is the only child they have, he was a spoilt brat lol.

Oh I forgot to mention how my mom use to sing praises of how cute he was when she held him, his pointed nose, his teddy, skin, his eyes too, I must admit that I was always jealous, he was so cute even more than I am.

Immediately our parents saw there was a silence, the parents were so shocked.

They greeted my parents awkwardly that was when I sensed that I may be right after all.

After we got in his mom couldn’t take it and just burst into tears and she said “l never knew this day would come” and the dad had to hold her with tears also in his eyes.

They told us how everything happened and how they left the country and just moved back. They’ve wanted to tell him for so long that he was a twin and tell him the truth but they couldn’t find themselves doing it, they love him so much and just didn’t wanna lose him.

And yes, my twin brother was so furious, angry, betrayed, pissed that they lied to him all his life, hiding his identity from him, He left the house and I followed him, gosh I’ve never seen a man so broken in my life, he cried his eyes out and I was sure my hands were wrapped

around him and yes I cried too lol. I told him it was just time we met and he should not be angry at his parents, they did what they had to do. We can’t blame them because they were desperate to own a child.

Few hours later we went back inside and he looked at his biological parents i.e my parent and he huuuuuugggged them. Everyone was just in tears, he has a big heart I must say because he went back to his parents and said “I forgive you”

I don’t wanna bore you with my story lol but I just want you to know that I wish this story was true gosh I’ve longed for my twin brother all my life, I wish he was alive there somewhere living his life and I could just meet him once.

I don’t know if there are twins out there who lost their second and feel the same way I feel, I always know in my heart that if he was alive he’ll be my best friend, I’ve imagined a lot of things lol even knowing he’s not alive I pretend he is right here with me.

I even act sometimes whenever I’m alone and I imagine that he was there with me, talking to me about the girls crushing on him and how he’ll deal with any guy that messes with me, talking about how beautiful our future will become and how we’ll make our children close,

so many things that I can’t even type out

If you still have your twin with you, please cherish every moment, the fights (most important lol) the laughter, the joy, the matching outfit and every other thing.

The Ipele born optometrist has proven over time to be man of valour, epitome of excellence and an articulate defendant of the masses.

In all ramifications of human life, Dr Abu is indeed a colossus worthy of emulation from those trailing behind him. A fact must be established that he has been active towards alleviating the plight of humanity from his school days.

As a Senior Prefect Boy during his primary and secondary era at Saint Stephens Mercy Nur/Pry School and Owo Diocesan Anglican Grammar School respectively, he has been an icon with unblemished record.

While delivering a Lecture, as a Guest Speaker, on the topic, 'The Role of Youth Empowerment in a Community', at a symposium organized by the Great Young Shall Grow Club, on the 27th December, 2019, Dr Abu made it known to his audience that we don't have to be a political office holder before we empower the youths around us. He stated that the importance of youth Empowerment cannot be over emphasized in any sane environment.

Compubox says that 93% of the fight has been fought at distance, a clear advantage to the taller Joshua. I can barely remember a clinch so far. Joshua gets in a few hooks and for a moment breaks from the plan and darts in to do damage from close range. But he springs back before Ruiz can do damage.

Ruiz predicted that he’d let Joshua dance and jab for the first rounds before going in and causing damage, but the Briton hasn’t let him inside all fight ... so far. Joshua gets in close and delivers a blow to Ruiz’s body. It does damage but Ruiz will have no problem with the challenger getting in where he can do damage to him. Ruiz looks slow, and who knows how that extra 15lbs he’s put on since June will tell as the fight wears on.

Fifth round

That cut has reopened above Ruiz’s left eye. Joshua still in control but he’s not going into Ruiz’s body, and is maybe a little one-dimensional. He smiles to himself as he lands a couple of hard jabs to Ruiz’s head.

Second round

The vaseline goes on Ruiz’s cut. He doesn’t look too worried, but even though Joshua won that first round, the Briton was a lot more cautious than he was in the first fight when his aggression got him in trouble. Two nice jabs from Ruiz, his best shots of the fight. Joshua focusing on that area with the cut and it’s reopened early in the round. And then a right from Joshua from close range, but Joshua is bleeding now too.

Ruiz is in gold trunks and Joshua in white. The crowd has warmed up a little. As predicted Joshua is keeping his opponent at a distance, controlling the centre of the ring. Reports gathered that the exquisite suite which she was given is worth millions per night. The reality star lodged in with her lover, Ike Onyema.

Sharing her joy via Instagram, the reality star explained how the hotel management had called her while in her previous hotel room, and afterwards she was moved to the best suite.
