Nigeria my country...
Where ever animal caught in the loose is food. bush meat specifically
Where wildlife is never valued or preserved.

Many will pay money to come see this beautiful creature in a game reserve, even a makeshift one, but my people prefer to "chop today, forget tomorrow". So many beautiful creatures that most of us (myself inclusive) only see on tv end up on nairaland frontpage as bush meat/pepper soup. Having a few more of these special beautiful creatures confined in a reserve will gain some people of that state jobs, attract tourists(even if its only local ones) to the state, development and more employment opportunities, and ultimately, secure some people's future by putting money in their pockets. But for here? Mba nu, lets eat and live today, tomorrow will think for itself. God help my country Nigeria...

It seems you did not get the point. I really don't know what you mean by bush meat.? If you mean grasscutters, guinea fowl, rabbits etc, they are animals that can be reared and are in fact are in large numbers compared to the likes of Hippo's.

Check your facts well, there is an international treaty on hunting of whales.(So the numbers and type the japanse hunt are actually limited).

Is there a justification for killing lions, buffaloes etc?

Is killing a hippopotamus for food illegal?

Nigerians eat cattle. Fine. But the story also shows that some Nigerians eat hippopotamus. Is that illegal?

Hippopotamus are not rare. There are just not as popular as cattle

The discovery of ‘couples’ among the students of Sa’adu Zungur Model School in Bauchi came as a shock to many. An old, reputable primary school, it was named after the famous Bauchi-born political activist and writer, Malam Sa’adu Zungur. It has produced prominent individuals that have excelled in various fields. It was renovated by the immediate-past governor, Malam Isa Yuguda. Part of the school was temporarily occupied by the Department of Management Science of Bauchi State university Gadau before they relocated to their Bauchi permanent site. It was later structured to accommodate a Co-Educational Secondary School of Boys and Girls.
According to reports, some senior students, male and female, were said to have been conducting illegally arranged ‘mock marriages’ among themselves within the school, wherein male students would pay a certain amount of money, allegedly as low as N500, as dowry.
Classmates of the ‘grooms and brides’ also allegedly contribute money to purchase snacks for the ceremonies. Sources in the school revealed that although male and female students study in separate classes, the attention of the teachers was drawn to the ‘mock marriages’ only about a week ago. According to the sources, an SS2 student whose name was withheld organised a ‘wedding ceremony’ between him and his ‘wife’ who was also a senior student. Teachers’ attention was drawn when they heard the noise from the celebrations. They rushed to the venue and found out what was happening.
The matter was promptly reported to the school’s principal, Malam Ahmed Zailani who later informed the state Ministry of Education, leading to the instant closure of both the primary and secondary sections of the school.
When Daily Trust visited on Monday, some SS3 students were hanging around the school to enquire about their fate, as they were about to start writing exams. However, when asked about the issue, some of them denied the allegations against their colleagues.
“It’s all lies. The thing happened on Valentine’s Day when the boy was teased that the girl is his wife. They don’t even talk to each other, talk less of being husband and wife,” one of the students said.
However, a female SS2 student who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed that there were indeed two ‘mock marriages’ in SS2A, and another class. The girl who is said to be in the same class and close to one of the ‘brides’ also confirmed that the ‘bride’ had indeed bought and shared candy to celebrate.
“When it was discovered, all the students in the two classes were punished by the school authorities. The first day we were punished, the two couples in the two classes were all present, but on the second day, the ‘bride’ in the other class was absent,” she said.
Parents vowed to take necessary action and provide the needed support.
Chairman of School Basic Management Committee (SBMC) of the school, Alhaji Muntari Abubakar, said there was a meeting with the members of the committee set up by the government and the school authorities and have presented their recommendations which was incorporated into its report. He accused some mischief-makers of blowing the issue out of proportion, which led to speculation.
“Yes, there was a ‘mock marriage’ by the students, which is just like all childhood drama where a boy or a girl can claim to be what he is not. A boy while playing may claim to be a king or an emir, but he is not. How can somebody claim to marry while there are steps? There must be involvement of the families of both parties as stipulated in Islam,” he said.
He however informed that they were worried because as parents, they don’t want their children to adopt a behaviour that is against the teachings of Islam and morals of their society. He therefore called on parents to avoid interfering in the administration of disciplinary measures on their wards in schools.
Findings by Daily Trust revealed that most of the students admitted in the school were transferred from private schools because their parents can no longer afford tuition due to economic challenges.
According to residents, the school was reputable and it’s students were well-behaved, until recently. “Some of them even hold hands openly and the girls will remove the school Hijab, bring out a long one to cover the school uniform and walk away with one of the boys on his bike or Keke NAPEP to God-knows-where. The teachers have been delaying the closing interval between the boys and the girls by about thirty minutes so that the boys will close when the girls would have dispersed, but some of the girls still hang around and wait for their male colleagues,” he said.

BusinessAs Naira Gains, Neighbouring Countries Ease Rush For Nigerian Goods by ManirBK(op): 12:06pm On Mar 06, 2017
The sudden slide of the US dollar and other foreign currencies has made export to neighbouring countries such as Niger Republic, Burkina Faso and Chad unattractive, traders have said.

Visits to Tsohuwar Kasuwa and other markets in Sokoto recently revealed that the number of trucks that load goods to Niger and Burkina Faso on daily basis has dropped drastically from about 20 to about five trucks.

Merchants from the neighbouring countries had taken advantage of the depreciation of the naira in recent times to ship more goods out of the country with little amount of their currencies, especially the CFA.

Local traders who spoke to our reporter said merchants from neighbouring countries no longer found it attractive to exchange a CFA at N62 to do business in Nigeria even as the price of the goods still remained high at their markets.

Alhaji Usman Salihu Mai Sugar, told our reporter that patronage by the merchants dropped since last week when the naira began to appreciate, adding “Before now there was hardly space here, even to pass was difficult.”

He said some of the reasons why the export business has gotten less attractive was “Because we are still selling the old stocks in the market; the appreciation of naira is yet to bring down prices in the market.”
Ismaila Illela said some of his customers at Niger told him they were studying the market for now before returning to Nigeria.

Also, some traders in Kano said there is a sharp dropped in patronage by merchants from Niger Republic as well as Chad
“About 20 to 30 trucks fully loaded usually leave Kano every evening before the appreciation of the naira but the number of trucks has reduced minimally as of last week,” a trader, Shuaibu Rijiyar Lemo, told our reporter recently.

The naira appreciated by about 20 percent since February 21 after the Central Bank of Nigeria released some new rules on the forex market.
Some Nigerians expressed joy over the naira appreciation hoping that things would get better in the nearest future.

Meanwhile, Nigerians have expressed joy over as the naira appreciated, saying that no one was happy with the high rate of inflation in the country due to forex scarcity.

According to Alhaji Salihu, “No one was happy with the high cost of materials in the market, even us the traders, we are not making much gain as speculated, we spend a lot to buy few goods.”

The naira jumped by about 18 percent at the parallel market - from N520 on February 23, to N425 a dollar Wednesday. However, some reports said the local currency closed the week at about 465 a dollar.

PoliticsKano Govt Drags Bride To Court For Given Birth Day After Mass Wedding by ManirBK(op): 6:12pm On Mar 05, 2017
Kano State government has dragged Habiba Inusa of Doguwa Gangare to court for given birth day after the mass wedding sponsored by government, the Director General of Hisbah Board, Dr. Abba Sifu has said.
Dr. Sufi told Daily Trust on Sunday that the woman was arraigned before a Shari'ah court in Doguwa local government area of Kano state for adultery and deliberate concealment of pregnancy respectively.
Consequently, he said, government had confiscated all the room furniture and other items earlier given to her by government during the mass wedding exercise.
"Habiba had confessed to the court that she was pregnant months before the mass wedding exercise. She told the court that she deceived the officials assigned to test the couples by given them her sister's urine during the exercise.
"She told the court that she went to the venue of the screen with her sister's urine which she concealed in her stomach and when it was her turn for the test, she presented her sister's urine in place of hers," he lamented.
Dr. Sufi added that the woman also confirmed that the pregnancy was for one Kamalu, not her husband, adding that "when the said Kamalu was invited, he confessed to have slept with the woman some months ago."
He said the court had also invited her parents for explanation over the unfortunate incident.
The DG said the woman is currently under the custody of the court in Doguwa local government area.
Daily Trust reports that one of the 1, 520 couples that were married off by the Kano state government last week under its mass wedding programme had given birth to a baby boy a day after the exercise.
