In this piece, MICHEAL OCHE examines the struggle for new minimum wage by the Nigerian workers as the federal government’s technical committee submits report this week.
Workers, during the 2016 May Day celebration proposed a new minimum wage of 56, 000 insisting that the current 18, 000 minimum wage is no longer realistic as the economic realities have rendered it so.
More than eight months after the proposal was made, the federal government is yet to respond to their demands, but recently, the minister of labour, Dr Chris Ngige, disclosed that a technical committee is expected to submit its report this week.
Reflectively, although the history of the struggle for minimum wage has been a long standing one, in March 2011, former President Goodluck Jonathan made history by signing the N18, 000 new minimum wage into law.

Teaching about Islam taught me many things.
I enjoyed being a priest helping the people for some years. However, deep inside I was not happy and I felt that there was something not right. Fortunately, and it is God’s will, some events and coincidences in my life led me to Islam.
I used to think of Egypt as a country of Pyramids, camels, sand and palm trees. I actually took a charter flight to Hurghada.
Shocked to find it similar to some European beaches, I took the first bus to Cairo where I spent the most wonderful week in my life.
This was my first introduction to Muslims and Islam. I noticed how Egyptians are such gentle, sweet people, but also very strong.

Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), Kebbi state chapter, yesterday, began a three-day prayer session to seek divine intervention for state government to pay their backlog of pensions and gratuities.
The prayer which was kick-started at the early hours of yesterday led by Adamu Abdullahi Argungu at the Eid-pray ground, Birnin Kebbi, had in attendance over 2, 000 thousand affected pensioners in the state.
In a communiqué issued by the union signed by the Chairman, Alhaji Usman Dangwari, indicated that the members had outrightly rejected the 40 per cent payment of their gratuity which they alleged that the federal government bailout of N11 billion could cover 100 per cent of their entitlements.
It added that the members should remain calm and to attend the three days prayer session to seek for divine redress.

GEJ did a $415 million CCTV camera project in Abuja but it didn't capture any picture and the project was more than 90% paid for. Money has gone into pockets. ..CCTV cameras we don't have. How will a country waste about $400million and much more on other phantom projects and not have recession? Wailers think we have memory loss?
Now someone will come and tell me such a person is his hero. When you keep quiet most times.... a fool will think he is talking sense.
