I just finished watching the video and would advise all Christians and non Christians to watch it too. The bishop makes some very poignant and true observations about the stories in the bible. How anyone can read it and still say it is a good book amazes me. We all know what is good and what is bad, what promotes altruism and what promotes genocide. From what i have had my eyes opened to about the Holy Bible it falls into the latter category, especially the old testament. To try and justify and condone it is like trying to justify the actions of a genocidal mass murderer who suddenly changed his mind and started a new testament after committing suicide under a different name. (But he didn't really die and will gloriously return to earth to kill millions more innocent babies, women, children, and men who don't believe.) If something sounds like nonsense, looks like nonsense, and smells like nonsense, my brain tells me that it probably is nonsense. So why does a third of the worlds population still believe it to be true? ![]() Keep up the good work Huxley. |
These people have been waiting 45 years for John Frum, their son of god to return to them. When they were told by the british that they are wasting their time, they told the british "you have been waiting 2000 years for your god to return to you so dont tell us to stop waiting for ours!" The last of the cargo cults http://www.nthposition.com/thelastcargo.php This shows how easy it is for a religion to form amonst people who are confronted with things they cannot comprehend. Just like how Christians claim to have all the answers past, present and future, contained in a book. |
In the beginning God created the heavens and earth. Here is the lego illustrated depiction of the story of genesis. http://www.thebricktestament.com/genesis/garden_of_eden/gn02_04-06.html This shows just how ridiculous the story is. Snakes don't talk ![]() And to think i used to actually believe that this fairytale was true. |
In the bible Samson Killed himself and all the philistines in the temple, yet he is considered a hero of the Old Testament. Why is this? Isn't his actions the same as a suicide terrorist? ![]() |

This is my picture of the prophet mohammed. - -If i was in a muslim area and published this would i be in danger of being stoned to death? |
@poster Be careful. This is what the god of the holy bible says that you must do to people, (including family members), who do not believe in him anymore. "If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you. You shall stone him to death, because he sought to lead you astray from the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. And all Israel, hearing of this, shall fear and never do such evil as this in your midst." (Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB) Open your bible and read it for yourself. This is truly sickening, savage, and barbaric. i hope your family are a little bit more tolerant than this. ![]() |
Is it illegal to draw a picture of of the prophet Mohammed? ![]() |
Watch this. This is a very mild reaction to what my parents would do to me if i was his age and told them i dont believe anymore. I know that most nigerians would probably have to wear body armour and have your bags packed and ready to leave. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8Aq00yJSxo Christians; Do you love Jesus more than you love your own family, and why? |
Except for murder, slavery has got to be one of the most immoral things a person can do. Yet slavery is rampant throughout the Bible in both the Old and New Testaments. The Bible clearly approves of slavery in many passages, and it goes so far as to tell how to obtain slaves, how hard you can beat them, and when you can have sex with the female slaves. Many Jews and Christians will try to ignore the moral problems of slavery by saying that these slaves were actually servants or indentured servants. Many translations of the Bible use the word "servant", "bondservant", or "manservant" instead of "slave" to make the Bible seem less immoral than it really is. While many slaves may have worked as household servants, that doesn't mean that they were not slaves who were bought, sold, and treated worse than livestock. The following passage shows that slaves are clearly property to be bought and sold like livestock. "However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way." (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT) The following passage describes how the Hebrew slaves are to be treated. "If you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for only six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom. If he was single when he became your slave and then married afterward, only he will go free in the seventh year. But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife will be freed with him. If his master gave him a wife while he was a slave, and they had sons or daughters, then the man will be free in the seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to his master. But the slave may plainly declare, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children. I would rather not go free.' If he does this, his master must present him before God. Then his master must take him to the door and publicly pierce his ear with an awl. After that, the slave will belong to his master forever." (Exodus 21:2-6 NLT) Notice how they can get a male Hebrew slave to become a permanent slave by keeping his wife and children hostage until he says he wants to become a permanent slave. What kind of family values are these? The following passage describes the sickening practice of sex slavery. How can anyone think it is moral to sell your own daughter as a sex slave? "When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment." (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT) So these are the Bible family values! A man can buy as many sex slaves as he wants as long as he feeds them, clothes them, and screws them! What does the Bible say about beating slaves? It says you can beat both male and female slaves with a rod so hard that as long as they don't die right away you are cleared of any wrong doing. "When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property." (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB) You would think that Jesus and the New Testament would have a different view of slavery, but slavery is still approved of in the New Testament, as the following passages show. "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ." (Ephesians 6:5 NLT) "Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts. Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them." (1 Timothy 6:1-2 NLT) In the following parable, Jesus clearly approves of beating slaves even if they didn't know they were doing anything wrong. "The servant will be severely punished, for though he knew his duty, he refused to do it. "But people who are not aware that they are doing wrong will be punished only lightly. Much is required from those to whom much is given, and much more is required from those to whom much more is given." (Luke 12:47-48 NLT) The more of the bible that i read with a critical and open mind, the more i am beginning to understand how evil it really is and how it was used to justify and condone atrocities such as rape, mass murder and the enslavement of innocent human beings including our ancestors. The chains have been released from our wrists, its time we released the chains from our minds that keep us enslaved. If we don't, this religion could destroy us all. Thank god for the internet to show everyone what the bible really contains, and its not pretty. |
"I think, therefore I am". - René Descartes |
@Bobbyaf Quote from mantraa I know you probably wont be able to understand this because of you seem to be totally blinded by your belief, but the bigger picture is that the world is a much better place now than it used to be. And it will get better as people think more rationally and give up the supernatural beliefs that divide us. "Really! Is that the case socially? Is that the case financially, economically, and environmentally? And since you seem to like science so much, why not provide the social, economic, and environmental scientific observations to prove that the world is a better place now than before. If there is anything fictitious it is the statement made by you above."Think about it Bobby. What period in history would you rather be living in? 50 years ago in America black people were not allowed to even vote and had to sit at the back of the bus, go to segregated schools and were treated as sub second class citizens. In the uk it was normal to see signs up in homes for rent saying "No dogs, no blacks and no irish".Now we have a black president of the most powerful nation in the world who is intelligently trying to bring the world together. Or would you prefer to live 100 years ago when the whole of europe was at war with each other. Just think about all the major wars in the world at that time, including in Africa, china and japan. How about 200 years ago when France was at war with England. Can you imagine being born into the slave trade, when your ancestors were taken to the Caribbean and Americas like cattle and sold as property? There was no electricity, or understanding of the germ theory of medicine. Maybe you cant imagine what life would have been like 500 years ago when the Mayans were ripping peoples hearts out as human sacrifices on an industrial scale, and all around the world tribes were slaughtering each other like there was no tomorrow. 1000 years ago England was in the dark ages. All around the world, life expectancy was less than half it is now. People thought the world was flat and had no reason not to. 2000 years ago most of europe was enslaved by the roman empire and People were being crucified and fed to the lions if they didn't like it. Caesar was considered to be a god. The world was a long long way from being as united and relatively peaceful as it is today. 3000 years ago, well you only have to read Exodus, Deuteronomy and Leviticus to see what life was like at that time. And all Israel, hearing of this, shall fear and never do such evil as this in your midst". (Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB) Is it any wonder that towns at the time like Jericho had to build massive walls around them to keep these bloodthirsty and barbaric ancient Israelites out Bobby, the most respected man in the world today is a black man - Nelson Mandella, and the most powerful man in the world is a black man - Barack Obama. But yet you still fail to see how the world is a better place than it was. ![]() Are you waiting for your colossal city in space to touch down on earth so that you can go and live there and be happy ever after, whilst everyone else outside the walls of this shiny city is mercilessly burnt to death by your god? I don't mean to sound disrespectful to you but it seems you are seriously deluded, and the sad thing is that you are blissfully unaware of your own delusions. You could help to make this world a better place too if you only opened your eyes. Respects |
@viable "It is absolutely difficult for you to believe in God, if you don't acknowledge the fact that Bible is indeed a book that came out of God's inspiration. I just want to give you one reference that can help you accept the bible as God's inspired word." Here's another example of god's inspired word; Kill the Entire Town if One Person Worships Another God "Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it. Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt. Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as he solemnly promised your ancestors. "The LORD your God will be merciful only if you obey him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to him." (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT) How can you accept this as god's inspired word? This is genocide no matter how you try to justify it. If you had one shred of humanity in you, you will see this. if you were living in that time would you join in the massacre also? Or would you disobey your god and refuse to kill innocent men, women and children just because they dont worship him? Cant you see that the only logical explanation for this, and many other 'inspired' passages like this in the bible is that it was written by a barbaric and immoral bronze age tribe of ancient Israelites who had no love for their fellow man. Can you imagine for one minute what it would be like to storm into a town, with sword in hand and slaughter thousands of innocent men, women and babies. To be covered in blood and ignore the screams of the mothers as you murder their children in front of them. Or maybe you would kill the parents first and save the babies till last? Open your eyes and read your bible my friend. Read about the horrendous and heartless mass murders committed by the heroes of the old testament such as Joshua, David, Samson, etc. Even Abraham was prepared to kill his own son for GODS SAKE!!!! Would you kill your family if you heard a voice in your head telling you to? Respects |
I suppose if you were living before anyone had ever heard of the theory of plate tectonics, then the only 'rational' explanation for earthquakes would be "god did it". The main debate would be why he did it and who made him so mad. We all now accept that this has been proven by science to be an irrational explanation. God didn't do it, its a natural result of the immense kinetic forces and colossal amounts of friction created by the slow stop / start movement of continental plates over the earth's hot molten interior. Thanks to the scientists who refused to accept that it is a punishment from god and kept asking questions, we now know that where these huge continental plates meet, that is where we get earthquakes. In my opinion i believe that the truth is much more important and useful than ancient myths which were used to control people through irrational fear based on supernatural superstition and ignorance. |
Where is davidylan? has he given up and admitted defeat? or is he still searching for his peer reviewed scientific papers in support of creationism? He seems to have gone very quiet all of a sudden. I hope that maybe he has started to realise that the power of denial is not as powerful as the blatant truth. |
Does anyone here believe that he earthquake in italy an act of god? And if so, why would god send an earthquake to Italy, the home of the roman catholic church? My condolences go out to the victims and their families. |
@No2Atheism Is the unbelief in the existence of the flying spaghetti monster a 'religion'? |
Quote "@mantraa well, i want to know which side are you, cos the way you asked me, you seems surprised and still yet not a christian, though i may be wrong, but pls i will like to know" I am on no ones 'side'. I am a human being just like any christian, muslim, or non believer. We are all the same and equal in god's eyes. Think about it, I know you will find it impossible to agree with me. respects |
@m nwankwo Great posts. Thank you for all that information about evolution. I knew it wasnt all based on one mans (charles darwin's) mad fantasy as many pastors have tried to convince me over the years. It will take me a while to read through some of them though. There is a programme on tv tonight called "did darwin kill god" (u.k bbc2 7pm). the presenter Conor Cunningham is a christian and a firm believer in Darwin's theory of evolution. He attempts to overturn the view that Darwin's ideas have weakened religion. Are you a christian Nwankwo? and if so, how do you merge your knowledge of science and evolution with your belief in the literal truth of the creation stories as told in the 'Holy' Bible? The amount of information the bible writers had was nothing compared to the amount we have now to form a more accurate picture of how we got here. But surely God knows everything right? so if you believe in god and evolution you must believe that he created evolution and left if to follow its own path of natural selection over millions of years. That would make you a Deist, right? I can see that knowledge and understanding based on facts and evidence are very important to you and the things you believe to be true. respects |
Quote "What bigger picture are you talking about? Have you resigned yourself to the conditions of this life as your source of happiness? Are you really happy with what you see around you? Can you name one scientists who advocates the theory of evolution with a solution for the social chaos that presently plagues this world?"I know you probably wont be able to understand this because of you seem to be totally blinded by your belief, but the bigger picture is that the world is a much better place now than it used to be. And it will get better as people think more rationally and give up the supernatural beliefs that divide us. Unless fundamentalists (christian and muslims) manage to drag us back into the dark ages. Have you ever wondered why the least religious countries in the world are the most peaceful? ![]() Think about it for a while. And please dont think that i am going to hell because i dont share your supernatural beliefs. I am not interested in saving myself from being left outside of your fictitious colossal city in space. I am interested in the psychological process that causes you to keep believing in such a ridiculous story. Your religion is not superior to all the other faiths in the world, and not closer to the truth than a non believer. When we finally realise and understand that we are all equal as human beings (believers and non believers), this world could be the paradise you pray for. Quoting the bible to prove the validity of your theological beliefs is the same as a muslim quoting the quaran to prove the validity of his/her theological beliefs. respects |
"And who do you think caused the existence of such a vast universe? " "God made Heaven, and then, after measuring the space underneath with a ball of thread, he began to form the earth. A mole asked to help, and God gave him the thread to hold while he wove the patterns of the earth. Sometimes the mole would let out too much thread, and finally the earth grew too large for the space under heaven. The mole was so upset that he hid under the earth. God sent the bee to look for him; he wanted the mole's advice on what to do about the mistake. The bee found the mole and he just laughed at the idea of advising God. The bee, however, hid in a flower and overheard the mole mumbling to himself about what he would do if he were God. 'Iwould squeeze the earth,' he said. 'That would make mountains and valleys and make it smaller at the same time.' When the bee heard this, he went directly to God and told him. God did what the mole had said, and everything fit fine." The myth of Rumanian Creation in which God weaves the earth from a ball of thread is just one the many stories that make up the wonderous world of creation myths. In virtually every culture throughout the ages, creation myths have played a vital role in providing not only explanations of the origins of societies but also specific cultural identities--serving as a "projection of an aspect of a culture's soul." From: A Dictionary of Creation Myths - (Oxford Paperback Reference) by David Adams Leeming http://www.amazon.com/Dictionary-Creation-Oxford-Paperback-Reference/dp/0195102754/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_c Your question is a very good question one. And my answer is i don't know. Nobody knows, not yet. But if scientists keep on searching and accumulating all the knowledge we acquire in our quest to find out, we will get closer and closer to the real truth. I suppose you feel that you already know the answer because it is written in the bible, but have you ever considered the possibility that you could be wrong, and that the bible is not the true word of god? Remember what they (the christian church) did to Galileo when his telescopes and calculations disproved the myth that the sun orbits the earth, and the creation story you believe in was written thousands of years before that by people who know nothing of the true nature of the universe we inhabit. Here is a link to a very beautifully illustrated book i just finished reading called "In the beginning - Creation myths from around the world" http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Creation-Stories-Around-World/dp/0152387420/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b As you can see, since humans first asked themselves that question, there have been thousands of creation stories from all over the world. Since they obviously can't all be right, the most logical conclusion for me is that they are all wrong. I suppose for you, they are all wrong except your Seventh Day Adventist interpretation of the stories in the bible. I respect whatever makes you happy, but i have chosen to see the bigger picture and accept reality, and what i see now is much more magnificent that any of the ignorant small minded writers of the bible could have ever imagined or comprehended. Respects |
@Todak Thanks for the information about the Quran todak. i have never read it before. is it really true that Mohammed married and had sex with a six year old girl? ![]() if it is, can a believer in Islam please explain this to me because i find this truly sickening. And also, taking the wife of his son in law. How can this be morally justified? Is it also true that a suicide bomber is rewarded with 71 virgins in heaven? That sounds pretty disgusting and i feel sorry for the poor 'bloody' virgins. But what if it was a female suicide bomber, is she rewarded with 71 male virgins? Why is there so much emphasis based on the fulfilment of repressed immoral sexual fantasies? Respects |
@Bobbyaf You're right, it is always a good thing to be informed. Thank you for informing me of your beliefs. Although I don't share them, I respect your right to have them and know how much it means to you. Peace. ![]() |
Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. Dick- Do you ever ask yourself: What if i'm wrong? -Daniel C. Dennett- Suppose we've chosen the wrong god. Every time we go to church we're just making him madder and madder. -Homer Simpson- If atheism is a religion, then bald is a hair colour. -Mark Schnitzius- Gods are fragile things; they may be killed by a whiff of science or a dose of common sense. -Chapman Cohen- Since it is inconceivable that all religions can be right, the most reasonable conclusion is that they are all wrong. -Christopher Hitchens- |
[tr]Quote from: davidylan on Yesterday at 07:59:52 PM Does allah exist? Oh you bet he does . . . as a demon not a god. Allah is a demon. Are all believers in different religions worshipping demons? I wonder. Do muslims think that Yahweh is a demon too? ![]() |
Is the earth 4.5 billion years old, as claimed by the scientists? Modern geologists and geophysicists consider the age of the Earth to be around 4.54 billion years. This age has been determined by radiometric age dating of meteorite material and is consistent with the ages of the oldest-known terrestrial and lunar samples. Today's accepted age of Earth of 4.55 billion years was determined by C.C. Patterson using uranium-lead isotope dating (specifically lead-lead dating) on several meteorites including the Canyon Diablo meteorite and published in 1956. Or is it just over 6000 years old as claimed by the Christian bishop James Ussher in 1654? Bishop Ussher's history of the Earth. Ussher's chronology provides the following dates for key events in the Biblical history of the world: * 4004 BC - Creation * 2348 BC - Noah's Flood * 1921 BC - God's call to Abraham * 1491 BC - The Exodus from Egypt * 1012 BC - Founding of the Temple in Jerusalem * 586 BC - Destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon and the beginning of the Babylonian Captivity * 4 BC - Birth of Jesus The world: Born in 4004 BC. I used to be a christian, went to church most sundays ( not on saturday like you do). Does that mean that everyone who goes to church on sunday is not righteous and would not be allowed into Gods shiny new city on earth? I read your link about the colossal city being built out in space, which will be lowered down to earth for people to live in. Will everyone who thinks the whole concept is quite ridiculous be left out too? That probably means that 99% of the population will be going to hell. "27. Millennium and the End of Sin: The millennium is the thousand-year reign of Christ with His saints in heaven between the first and second resurrections. During this time the wicked dead will be judged; the earth will be utterly desolate, without living human inhabitants, but occupied by Satan and his angels. At its close Christ with His saints and the Holy City will descend from heaven to earth. The unrighteous dead will then be resurrected, and with Satan and his angels will surround the city; but fire from God will consume them and cleanse the earth. The universe will thus be freed of sin and sinners forever. (Rev. 20; 1 Cor. 6:2, 3; Jer. 4:23-26; Rev. 21:1-5; Mal. 4:1; Eze. 28:18, 19.)" Thats not nice, In fact that sounds like mass murder like the flood story but this time even worse. Death by being burnt alive. This is also implying that life on Earth is the only life in the whole universe. Since Earth is of the same elements as the rest of the universe it is highly likely that other planets (and there are billions out there) could have conditions favourable to the existence of life on them also. "28. New Earth: On the new earth, in which righteousness dwells, God will provide an eternal home for the redeemed and a perfect environment for everlasting life, love, joy, and learning in His presence. For here God Himself will dwell with His people, and suffering and death will have passed away. The great controversy will be ended, and sin will be no more. All things, animate and inanimate, will declare that God is love; and He shall reign forever. Amen. (2 Peter 3:13; Isa. 35; 65:17-25; Matt. 5:5; Rev. 21:1-7; 22:1-5; 11:15.)" God is love? I have come to realise that my idea of love is very different from the 'love' that the God of the bible shows his children. I have given up faith in this fictitious supernatural character from the bronze age called 'God' in exchange for the truth. I hope that one day the truth will set you free too and your eyes will be opened to the true glory and immense scale and majesty of the universe that we live in. Knowledge and understanding is much more important to me now. Respects |
Thanks for the links bobyaf. I found it all very fascinating and didn't realise that your beliefs had so many differences from mainstream Christianity, although based on the same bible. I find the Colossal-City-In-Space theory to be a bit like science fiction though (very early science fiction). i did a bit a of research about your branch of Christianity and found that it began in 1863, around the same time as the Mormons and i can see a lot of similarities in the way 19th century religions came about, evolved, and have had to adapt to modern times. Were you born into your religion or were you converted later in life? I have recently started looking at all the hundreds of different religions of the world, not to try to find the right one for me, but to examine the various different beliefs that people have. respects |
"We are all born Atheists. Some people are unknowingly and forcibly converted to theism. Later, some of us find the strength to de-convert." This time last year i used to be a tithe paying Christian. Now thanks to many of the posters on this board such as Huxley, yourself and others I can see things more clearly now. The process of deconverting is a slow and painful one due to the years of brainwashing from a very early age. I started questioning my beliefs a few years ago and can now see the role that religion has played in the evolution of our species over the last 10000 years and it is all starting to make a lot more sense to include all faiths in this phenomenon that is religion. Millions of people love their God/s more than they love themselves, their own family, or humanity itself. This is mass delusion on enormous scale with each faith living in their own little perfect bubble thinking that if everyone shared their belief the world would be a better place. If you are honest you will Know this is never going to happen. We all need to wake up and start thinking rationally. This world is a for all people.
