Christianity EtcRe: Ask God A Question Here! by mantraa: 9:23pm On Oct 31, 2009
I would have to ask just 2 questions:

1. Do you exist?

2. If yes; Which god are you? considering there are thousands of different gods that the peoples of this world believe in and spend their whole lives worshipping.
Christianity EtcRe: What Colour Is God? by mantraa: 10:42pm On Oct 27, 2009
they say man is made in gods image, but i think that in reality gods are made in man's image so thus every race has a god that is the same colour as them. Unless they were enslaved and forced to worship a god that is not their own.

What colour is god? Depends on which god you are talking about. As Horus has just shown, his ancient egyptian god was black (with lots of gold!).

Jewish gods were jewish
African gods were african
Chinese gods were chinese
Indian gods were indian
etc. etc. etc.

lol you seem too desperate to "help" us see the light. Perhaps the truth is you are the one with the problem, i dont remember any of us complaining about being in darkness. We're doing just fine so shove your help elsewhere it might be needed.
I wish our ancestors had said that when the christians first came to africa.

In fact they probably did but were not given a choice. Now some of us still find it hard to release the chains.

Dont believe anything that you read. You are not a child. You must know the difference between fact and fiction.
Why have you not learned anything from all the posts showing you the overwhelming amount of scientific reasons why a global flood could not have happened?

Is it because you are desperately denying the possibility that the bible could be wrong, or is rational thinking beyond your capability.

Do you also believe that the earth is flat? and if not, why not?

Christianity EtcAdam And Eve. Is God A Bad Parent? by mantraa(op): 7:59pm On Oct 13, 2009
"Author Paul Alan Laughlin, a liberal Christian, drew an analogy between the story of Genesis 3 and "a more modern scenario." The following parable is based on his tale:

A woman bakes a batch of cookies for a party. She warns her twins, aged 3, to not eat any. She explained to them, deceitfully, that if they did, then she would kill them. Not thinking things through carefully, she placed the cookies on a table, easily accessible to the twins. A brother who was older, wiser and more mature than the twins asked whether their mother had forbidden them to eat anything in the house. The girl twin, Edna, said that mother had only forbidden them to eat the cookies -- on pain of death. The older brother chuckled and told his sister that parents did that a lot. He said: "Of course she wouldn't kill you. She simply wants to deny you the pleasure of munching on the cookies. She doesn't want to share the cookies. She wants to keep them all to herself." Edna does exactly what any adult could predict: she eats one. Then, she persuades her twin brother Albert to eat another.

The mother returns, not aware of the twin's disobedience. She notices crumbs on the table and on the twins' lips. She correctly concludes that the twins have eaten cookies. She flies into a rage, physically punishes and handicaps them, then throws them out of the house to fend for themselves. She cuts them out of her will. She then does all she can to make the lives of any future descendents of the twins miserable."

Any parent who acts like this lacks love, compassion, intelligence or morals, yet this is exactly how God acts in the Genesis story of Adam and Eve. A possible Christian defence, in order to try and keep God as the good guy, would be that God then rectified the situation by sending his son out to retrieve his children. But this could all have been averted if God was simply a better parent in the first place!
Christianity EtcRe: The Noah's Story by mantraa: 7:20pm On Oct 13, 2009
what about ventilation in the ark ? there was only one window
Good question. The amounts of methane and carbon dioxide gas given off by all the animals on board would have made it totally impossible to beathe.
According to the story, the window was only there for the giraffe to stick its head out of.

Another question: What did they use for lighting inside the ark? To use oil lamps with all that methane around would have explosive results.

So if your child said to you one day that she is an atheist and does not share your religious belief, would you think it justfied for your god to send her to hell to be burned and tortured?

Do you beleive that the only way to heaven is through believing in jesus, or through good works regardless of religious belief?

Christianity EtcRe: The Noah's Story by mantraa: 2:32pm On Oct 13, 2009
Do you seriously believe that noah had dinosaurs on his ark as mentioned in the link you provided?

"Remember there are really only a few very large animals, such as the dinosaur or the elephant, and these could be represented by young ones."

Do you know how many different species of dinosaurs there were and when they became extinct?

Do you know about plate tectonics and the slow movement of the earths crust?

Do you know about the massive floods caused by the melting of the ice sheets at the end of the last ice age?

It is very interesting that local flood myths of the mediteranean coincide with the raised sea levels due to the ending of the ice age, and primitive humans attempts at explaining the phenomenom. Our knowledge and understanding has advanced tremendously since then but still some people desperately cling on to the old idea that 'god did it' because we made him angry.

It is the same kind of people who believe that the tsunami in indonesia which killed thousands of people was god's wrath to punish wicked people.

Noah's flood is a myth based on a massive local flood 7500 years ago when natural dams broke and sea water flooded into the black sea which used to be a freshwater lake.

Would you ever send someone you love deeply like your children or you mother to hell to be tortured, suffer and burn for all eternity?
If you would that is not love.
If hell exists you wouldn't send your children there, so how can god send his children there if he loves them?

It makes no sense at all, which is why i think hell is a fictitional barbaric medievel place created by christians to control using fear and superstition.

I understand how people who are superstitious by nature can be taken in by it all. It takes a long time for a believer to realise they have been duped since childhood.

Christianity EtcRe: The Aim Of Science by mantraa: 5:35pm On Oct 08, 2009
The aim of science is to investigate matter and energy. To discover their properties and behaviour pattern. If a particular thing is neither matter nor energy, then it cannot be investigated in a laboratory. For example, love is a fact of life, but since it is neither matter nor energy it cannot be investigated by science. There is no gadget to measure the mass, length, breadth, or temperature of love.
So is psychology not a science then? The study of human or animal mental functions and behavior. Depth psychologists can even study the unconscious mind. Neuro scientists can detect the regions of your subconscious brain that cause fear, affection, emotions etc using the latest MRI scanners. Did you know that your subconscious brain reacts faster to danger than your conscious brain. This reseach could eventually lead to explaining the origins of superstitions.

Many of the areas that scientists study were once considered to be supernatural, such as electricity, magnetism, seismology, meteorology, microbiology etc etc.
There are also many social sciences such as sociology that are not restricted to just studying matter and energy.

Very, very good point.

Christianity EtcRe: The immense scale of the universe by mantraa(op): 10:58pm On Oct 06, 2009
@deep sight
That is exactly the point i was making.
They thought that they were falling 'stars'. They did not know that a star and a meteorite are two completely different objects. Why did god not tell the so-called prophets that a meteorite is not a star?
In their ignorance of the universe that they inhabit, the writers of the bible tried to explain how and why it was created. In their arrogance, they put the earth at the centre of it all. The planets were thought to be wondering 'stars' until scientists invented telescopes and discovered what they really are.

Why do you think your deist god made all those distant galaxies, massive stars, and black holes, etc?
Do you think that they were made just so that he could impress us humans? (6000 years later, when the first deep space telescopes where invented).

You dont have all the answers, nobody does yet. There is much more to be learned and to just say "god did it" is intellectual laziness which does nothing to advance our knowledge and understanding.

Why did yahweh not know about Parthenogenesis or Hermaphrodites when he told noah to collect two of every species of animals?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parthenogenesis
"Parthenogenesis (from the Greek παρθένος parthenos, "virgin", + γένεσις genesis, "creation"wink is an asexual form of reproduction found in females where growth and development of embryos occurs without fertilization by a male. In plants, parthenogenesis means development of an embryo from an unfertilized egg cell, and is a component process of apomixis. The offspring produced by parthenogenesis are always female in species that use the XY sex-determination system.

Parthenogenesis occurs naturally in some invertebrate animal species (e.g. water fleas, aphids, nematodes some bees, some Phasmida, some scorpion species, and parasitic wasps), and vertebrates (e.g. some reptiles,[1] fish, and very rarely birds[2] and sharks[3]) and this type of reproduction has been induced artificially in other species.

The term is sometimes used inaccurately to describe reproduction modes in hermaphroditic species which can reproduce by themselves because they contain reproductive organs of both sexes."

The answer is obvious. The story is mythological and based on the limited knowledge of the time.
Christianity EtcRe: 'ardi,' Oldest Human Ancestor, Unveiled by mantraa: 1:54pm On Oct 03, 2009
@ the seeker
If you really seek to learn the truth about the evolution of the eye, take a look here and educate yourself first before asking questions that have already long been answered.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution_of_the_eye

"Since 1802, the evolution of a structure as complex as the projecting eye by natural selection has been said to be difficult to explain.[4] Charles Darwin himself wrote, in his Origin of Species, that the evolution of the eye by natural selection at first glance seemed "absurd in the highest possible degree". However, he went on to explain that despite the difficulty in imagining it, it was perfectly feasible:

, if numerous gradations from a perfect and complex eye to one very imperfect and simple, each grade being useful to its possessor, can be shown to exist; if further, the eye does vary ever so slightly, and the variations be inherited, which is certainly the case; and if any variation or modification in the organ be ever useful to an animal under changing conditions of life, then the difficulty of believing that a perfect and complex eye could be formed by natural selection, though insuperable by our imagination, can hardly be considered real.[5]

He suggested a gradation from "an optic nerve merely coated with pigment, and without any other mechanism" to "a moderately high stage of perfection", giving examples of extant intermediate grades of evolution.[5]

Darwin's suggestions were soon proven to be correct, and current research is investigating the genetic mechanisms responsible for eye development and evolution."

You are right. A lot of ancient knowledge was lost as kingdoms rose and fell, only to be rediscovered again centuries later as people were allowed to persue their quest for knowledge free from fear of being labelled a heretic and having their books burned, like what happened in the dark ages in europe.
Christianity EtcRe: What If You're Wrong? by mantraa: 4:00am On Oct 01, 2009
@ deepsight

In Job 26:7 it says, "He suspends the earth over nothing". Or "God hangeth the earth upon nothing."
You are wrong if you think that at the time that was written, every man on earth believed the world was held up by some kind of a solid foundation.

Anaximander (6th century B.C.) -- taught that the stars were attached to a sphere with the earth floating freely in the center without support.

Anaxagoras (c. 500 - 428 B.C.) -- according to Plutarch and other ancient writers, taught correct explanation of Moon's phases.

Aristotle (d. 323 B.C.) -- In his _Meteorology_ said, "The sphericity of the Earth is proved by the evidence of our senses." Noted change in stars visible as you move north to south; the manner in which the hull of a ship vanishes below the horizon before the mast does; and the round shadow of the Earth on the Moon during a lunar eclipse.

Aristarchus (c. 310 - 230 B.C.) -- In his _On the Size and Distances of the Sun and Moon_ used geometric arguments to try to establish those values. While the values were wrong due to limitations in making the necessary measurements (Proposition 15 derived the ratio of the diameters of the Sun and Earth as between 19:3 and 43:6; he derived a distance to the Sun of 18-20 times the distance to the Moon), the ideas were sound.

Eratosthenes (276 - 196 B.C.) -- Using the difference in angle of the Sun from the zenith at Alexandria and Syene, estimated the circumference of the Earth as 46000 km (actual value is 40000 km).

Ptolemy (active A.D. 127 to 151) -- invented a conical map projection to compensate for roundness of Earth: "When the Earth is delineated on a sphere, it has a shape like its own, "; Propositions  19-21 in Book V of the Almagest contains a geometrical argument yielding a distance from Earth to Sun of 1210 terrestrial radii (4,800,000 miles) -- while this is small by a factor of 20, it gives a solar parallax of < 3 minutes, below the limit of observational accuracy at the time.

The Greeks knew many things that other ancient peoples apparently didn't, but recent research shows that they got much of their knowledge from even more ancient peoples.  An interesting example of this was a discovery reported in the New York Times of January 8, 1950 that the ancient Sumerians were familiar with what later became known as the Pythagorean Theorem:
Recent discoveries of cuneiform writing seem to indicate the Sumerians believed the earth was spherical.  Any people associated with the Sumerians or the civilizations derived from them would likewise have some of their knowledge.  This obviously applies to the Israelites, as well as the Greeks and Egyptians.

Understand that it is Job, not God, speaking in Job 26:7 when he says "he suspends the earth over nothing."

And then God appears and asks him where he was when God laid the foundations of the Earth and fixed its cornerstone.  huh

When the Jewish God, Yahweh, appears on the scene He says;

{Job 38:4} Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
{Job 38:5} Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
{Job 38:6} Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

Do you really believe these are the actual words of the deist god that you believe in?
Christianity EtcRe: What If You're Wrong? by mantraa: 12:56pm On Sep 30, 2009
On the planet? I don't think they instructed Niah to gather every animal on the planet, he only gathered those he could reach and some strange sample of wooden material have been found and carbon dated to around the date the incident was biblically recorded
@lightwalk
It seems that you know that it would be impossible to gather two of every animal and put them in a wooden boat. This is good, you are starting to think rationally. However most christians would disagree with you and claim that the story is literally true. In answers-in-genesis and their very popular creation museum in kentucky they claim that two of all the dinosaurs were on the ark as well, including brontosaurus and t-rex! http://creationmuseum.org/whats-here/exhibits/#dinosaur-den

Either you believe in it all or you dont. You cant just pick and choose. Or maybe you are just starting to realise how rediculous the whole thing sounds.

A couple of years ago i read a very enlightening book written by Thomas paine, a deist, called 'The Age of Reason'.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Age-Reason-Thomas-Paine/dp/0486433935/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254219099&sr=8-1

Synopsis
"Written in the years from 1792 to 1795 while Thomas Paine was in prison, The Age of Reason shocked eighteenth-century readers with its attack on the conventions of Christianity. Based on years of study and reflection by the author, the work is written from the deist point of view and questions Christian beliefs and the role of religion in society. Its resonance remains undiminished after two centuries and it continues to influence thinkers around the world."

I was just wondering if you had read it, and if not you might find it very interesting.

I like the way that deists try to understand the bigger picture and not just the tunnel vision that their particular religions is right and all non believers in it are wrong and will be punished in hell.

Even Barack Obama has sent his children to a deist school.

I really don't understand why atheist love wallowing in their delusions with all the overwhelming glaring evidence. It is no suprise that it is only on anonymous forums like this that they can express their foolishness. I can understand a man not accepting religion, but if such a man is deluded enough to assume all the numerous complexities on this planet just happened by chance, I think such a person seriously needs to have his/her head examined.
All the overwhelming glaring evidence is in support of evolution by natural selection. Chance has nothing to do with it.
All i am saying is take chance out of your equation then we can continue.

I know and understand why you feel the need to hang on to your supernatural belief system and respect that. Do not be afraid to question your beliefs and look at the big picture and religions place in that. There is much more to life then the founders of your theology could comprehend.
