With the dust yet to settle on Nigeria’s abysmal performance at the London 2012 Olympics, allegations have started making the rounds, that some athletes were asked to give bribes, if they wished to be taken to the Olympics. An amateur marathon runner, Esther Obiekwe, claimed that bribes were requested from her,in order for her to be part of Team Nigeria that was at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Obiekwe alleged that virtually all the athletes Nigeria took to the last Olympics, paid their way into the team, and that the Nigeria Olympic Committee(NOC) specifically asked her for gratifications which she refused. Owing to Obiekwe’s damning revelations, the National Sport Commission(NSC) set up an investigative panel to look into the allegations coming from the banker, who took to Marathon running out of her passion for the sport. The investigative panel is made up of Justice Danlami Sanchi as the chairman of the panel, and former Nigerian athlete,Dr. Gloria Obajimi as a member. Obiekwe is expected to appear before the panel on Monday, and the outcome of the panel’s investigations would be known later this week. |

I Want To Keep For Nigeria In-form Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme is keeping his international options open for approaches from Nigeria or England. The 26-year-old has been in outstanding form for his club this season. Ikeme hails from Castle Bromwich in Birmingham but his father is Nigerian. Six years ago he was included in Bertie Vogts’ first provisional Super Eagles squad – a 37-man list that also included Villa’s Gabby Agbonlahor and Albion’s Peter Odemwingie, then with Lille, and former Wolves team-mate Seyi Olofinjana. Ikeme’s career then stalled somewhat, having to play second-fiddle to Matt Murray and Wayne Hennessey, and even third-fiddle when Marcus Hahnemann was at the club, leading to a succession of short-term loan moves. But Ikeme is now in the form of his life. And although he may be some way off a call from Roy Hodgson, Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has very little back-up to long-standing goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama who, at the age of 30, already has 70 caps after 11 years as national No.1. “A call up by Nigeria is the next step really, that’s the next level,” Ikeme told the Sunday Mercury. “If the call came I would be interested in it, obviously. “I’ve not gone one way or the other. The Nigeria thing came up a few years ago and so everyone has associated me with Nigeria, but I’ve not decided on anything. It’s just a case of waiting and seeing how my career goes really. I’ll just see where I end up. “But if Nigeria did call me, I’d seriously consider it. My dad’s side of the family are all from Nigeria. I was over there last summer. I do still see a lot of them. “They called Gabby up with me but he was always more hopeful of England because he was playing in the Premier League. England are the stronger footballing nation. |
AkoEja: These Nigerian football administrators are very stupid. There is no football coach in the world that can guarantee success. There is a need for continuity in the administration of coaching before we start seeing success in our football team.My words exactly!!! We should be using this to build up to having a team for brazil 2014 not hiring and firing coaches and no continuity. |
Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp wants to sign West Brom forward Peter Odemwingie and secure a loan deal for Tottenham midfielder Jake Livermore. "We made an enquiry for Odemwingie," the R's boss said after a battling 0-0 draw against his former club Tottenham. Redknapp added: "There is every chance we have made an offer [for Odemwingie] but I haven't spoken to him [Beard] today but there is every chance an offer could have gone in." Odemwingie, 31, did not play in West Brom's 3-2 defeat by QPR's relegation rivals Reading on Saturday. |

A DARK cloud seems to be hanging over Nigeria–trained doctors desiring to practise in the United Kingdom. Figures released under the Freedom of Information Request by a British tabloid, the Daily Mail, reveal that three-quarters of the doctors struck off the General Medical Council (GMC) register in the past years are foreign-trained and that those trained in Nigeria rank second on the list of those removed from the professional register of the GMC . According to the figures published in the Mail article of yesterday, India-trained doctors top the list of foreign-trained doctors to be struck off the GMC register in the past five years and Nigeria-trained doctors have the record of being second. Egypt-trained doctors occupy the third spot. The paper revealed further that “194 of the 285 doctors struck off for misconduct or incompetence in the past five years were foreign-trained, while 29 of the 39 removed from the medical register in the past year received their medical degree overseas.” Continuing, the paper disclosed that “with only one-third of the 250,000 doctors on the medical register trained outside the United Kingdom, this means that those from overseas were more than five times likely than British doctors to be banned.” Quoting the data it obtained under the Freedom of Information Request - the equivalent of Nigeria’s Freedom of Information Act - the Mail revealed that “India has the largest number of doctors struck off in Britain since 2008, followed by Nigeria and Egypt.” This is in sharp contrast to Hong Kong, which has the best record, “with none of more than 700 doctors working here – in the UK – struck off or disciplined in the past five years. New Zealand’s 600 medics also have a clean record.” Based on the revelations, the paper quoted Julia Manning, the chief executive of the 2020 Health think-tank, as saying “these figures are really worrying and shocking” and that “we need to take a hard look at the assessment of all doctors coming into the country |

Shola after winning his first cap. This nation cup would have been his opportunity to establish himself on the inernational stage. Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has spoken out about his pride at becoming a part of the Nigeria squad and has revealed his ambition of becoming an “international hero” for the country of his birth. The 31-year-old has been selected for Wednesday’s friendly against Venezuela in Miami, and Ameobi was keen to stress how much the country means to him and his family, having previously been called up in 2011, but withdrawing due to injury. "I want to do the best that I can," Ameobi told reporters. "I don't just want to be a local hero; I want to be an international one. That's what has driven the decision. "I'm really excited. Nigeria is where I'm from, that's my heritage and I've never forgotten my roots. The majority of my family are from Nigeria and they're really excited about this. My parents are really, really happy but they would have supported me either way. It's a case of better late than never. "This is the first opportunity that has arisen to do something that I've always felt passionately about and I've always wanted to do. "It's a great honour and I don't take it lightly. It's something that I've wanted to do and I'm really, really happy that I've got the opportunity to do it now." The striker revealed the concern expressed by his club manager, Alan Pardew, about his decision to undergo so much potential travelling, although Pardew’s prevailing message was one of congratulations. "I think with my age and the travelling, Alan Pardew has said he's worried," continued Ameobi. "You don't get back until later, you don't get much time to recover but it's something that we will look at and make sure I'm not doing a disservice to the club. "But he's delighted for me, as you'd expect because he wants a squad full of internationals here. "He's happy for me. Newcastle United will always be number one for me, that is the bread and butter so that is something we'll look at." for me. Newcastle United will always be number one for me, that is the bread and butter so that is something we'll look at." |

West Brom star Liam Ridgewell has apologised after being photographed wiping his bum with £20 notes. The defender was pictured using the cash to, ahem, help him in his ablutions in a bathroom whose floor was covered in bundles of £20 notes. The photograph was leaked to The Sun by a fan who had somehow got hold of the picture, and Ridgewell has said sorry to anyone he might have offended. "The photo was taken in the privacy of my home around eight months ago as a joke to wind up a mate, who I had just won a personal bet with," the former Birmingham star explained to The Sun. The 28-year-old - who earns £20,000-a-week with the high-flying Midlands club - was clearly mortified about his cheeky prank getting a far wider audience than intended, particularly given the paper's highly-inflammatory report about how his wages equate to the average annual salary in the Birmingham area. "I only intended him to see the photo but now it's public, I can understand how it will be viewed. I am sorry for any offence it causes," he added. |
