God bless you for the highlighted..... The way some people turn logic on its head dey make dem mata taya me....

This is one of the reasons I hardly attend to mentions.... not only am I really not bothered about people who deliberately misinterprete (or spin to suit their own agenda) issues, I've also gradually come to the realisation that many people on the interweb are certifiably stupid & ignorant!!!
Madam,

This highlighted part is the conclusion I am reaching lately. NL for example used to be a hub of "intelligentsia"......now turned into something else

Let's be realistic. Someone will have to take that cost and in the current power value chain, the customer is at the receiving end and will bear the cost. We are currently bearing the cost of additional investments all the "COs" are making.....

What a funny question! shocked The Disco, of course. You got to spend money, in order to make money..not so? huh And most companies who seek to improve their business operations, usually invest in research & development in order to perform better, meet the needs of their customers more efficiently, or simply beat the competition, at their own game. It is a fact of business. undecided
So you think the Discos will "bear" the cost and not transfer same to the end consumer?

Standards all over the world is that to hand over calls data, logs and information, you will need a court order.

Thats not "O" level.Dont you know that its completely impossible to break through some encryptions? The whatsapp signal protocol encryption has never been cracked. There are somethings that hackers cannot do or decipher.I still believe day to day calls should be encrypted. Its not a hard thing to do
I will also not want to make this an issue. Calls can be encrypted, but such level of calls are defined. That is why it is called a secured line. A secured line is also accessible by high level security protocol.......hence in principle...nothing is secured, encrypted or not.

Secondly, by definition and concention, phone calls are not meant to be secured. They are in the open. RF calls are even more open. The responsiblity is on the caller and the called to know the security level on the medium they are using, what and what not to discuss on it. Even your office intercoms are not secured, can be listed to by your IT/Telecoms group, especially during investigations.

Bros,

This is as clear as night and day. when a deluded idiot alleges that MTN taps calls and releases it as a price for reduction in fines, don't you think some people's idiocy has reached high octane?

Security agents can tap anybody's calls with sophisticated call frequency interference devices. They do not need MTN. For example Security agencies can listen to your calls, discussions and voices even when they are 1km away

To get MTN to provide the calls data and logs, security agencies will get a court order and serve same to MTN

It is a crime for any govt apparatus to spy on its citizens without A COMPETENT COURT APPROVAL. The challenge I have here is will Fayose be able to prove beyond doubt that DSS actually intercepted his conversation. If he can establish this fact then he needs to sue.

It is very unfortunate that this country is gradually returning to a dictatorial, despotic and Totalitarian state. No respect for rule of law.

Nigerian Govt does not know the importance of security and internet privacy, why wasnt the call encrypted in such a way that they can be no "man in the middle attack" interception to prevent eavesdropping conversations.
Applications like WhatsApp and Telegram messenger apply end to end encryption to thier chats, telegrams default/cloud messages are encrypted with client-server encryption and can be synched across multiple devices. While secret chats use end to end encryption.
All these apps are trying to protect people from wild spread internet surveilance. Our day to day calls are supposed to be encryted but our govt doesnt care about our privacy and security issues.
Bros,

This your O'level IT security knowledge is insufficient to address the situation on ground. First off, "security" and "internet privacy" are not exclusively out of the government security agencies coverage when surveillance is being carried out. Who told you encrypted calls cannot be decrypted by a third party/hacker? Or the attacks on Yahoo, Amazon and spate of cyber crimes in America for example is supposedly down to the inaction of the American government?

Meanwhile, lay off the ignorance. Your day-to-day calls is not supposed to be encrypted by the government? Gosh! How do some of you put illogic together

The reason is simple.
Any Disco that cannot reasonably and effectively metered the electricity it distributes will not be able to pay the Gencos and will just keep accumulating debt. The issue is worsened now with the fact that 1, estimated billing is becoming difficult to collect, 2, it's almost now illegal to disconnect owning customers.
The ultimate solution is to METERED ALL ELECTRICITY CONSUMERS.. Anything outside that will not work
Madam,

Good points.

But if you look at the article critically, it goes a little beyond that. For example, people in Niger refusing to pay for electricity, claiming that power is generated from their state, is a cultural issue that needs change management to address.

You simply cannot take what you cannot use. If you are not making profit, you are in debt, the consequences of which are worse. Transysco should study the pattern and advice the GENCOS to trim output whenever uptake is weak if not, it is they who will go bankrupt.
Spot On! I will also add that this is the point where distribution patterns should be backed up by historical usage patterns and power demands. This will require further investment..........and will push power cost up.....but will be worth it. This probably butresses Osinbajo's point that Transysco should also be privatised rather than the concession arrangement

While power is being rejected by some discos, ironically some are crying for more power as they can sell much more.........

There's nothing wrong. The industry is just maturing and I commend the DISCOS for flying an independent kite. Hopefully they will move to the next stage of diversifying their power purchase from Transysco and open up the whole market to whoever can supply them power and a favourable price to them which includes the general public.

Rejection means one or two things. Either the economics isn't right or the technical package isn't. Why will I buy power if I cannot make money selling it. Is that not a debt which will sooner or later destroy the whole industry. We all know that three of the biggest challenges faced today are: low electricity prices, poor transmission and distribution infrastructure and electricty theft and until these can be adequately addressed and surmounted, DISCOS will have no alternative than to buy only what they can sell and when they can sell to make a profit. This is purely business and if government as a whole operated like this, we will not be in the mess we face today.
Thanks bros,

I thought I would not get someone to rationalise this until I got to your post. My fear is that the consumers are setting a precedent, pushing the market to a "willing buyer-will seller" model. When this happens, there will likely be an embedded cost factor which will only be narrowed down to "alternatives". We will have a scenario where industries will rather opt to buy more of their power needs from disco at a price the domestic consumer cannot pay. The disco will then be more disposed to direct more power to the consumer who is ready to pay more
