Tech JobsRe: Any Programming Or Software Engineering Jobs? by markesh(m): 3:39pm On Jun 28, 2007
Well, with an initial investment of $0.00, a running cost of $100 a year, I'm making about $100.000 a year selling software I developed myself. So it's not hard, you just need to be a bit creative with the type of software you choose to develop. And of course, be prepared to work hard to really know your stuff.
ProgrammingRe: Basics Of PHP Programming? by markesh(m): 8:01pm On Nov 17, 2006
You guys are wasting your time learning PHP. PHP is complicated and makes you do a lot of unnecesary work. Learn Ruby or Python, and use the Ruby On Rails or Django frameworks respectively.

Personally, my first language is C++, and I dislike the mess that is PHP.
FamilyRe: Terminating A Six Month Pregnancy by markesh(m): 12:01pm On Nov 15, 2006
This is truly a terrible situation to be in. The child that is born this way is going to be unhappy. His mother will not take care of him, and his grandmother also not. His uncles and aunts are advicing his mother to kill herself. What type of childhood would this child have? The mother knows she is not capable of taking care of the child, so the birth of this child will further destroy her life. In particular, she can forget about finding another man.

On the other hand, who is to say that the child born into the circumstances of despair will not rise above them to become the person who will transform and change the world? Was the ex president of Germany not born to a single mum who was a cleaner? Everybody has the potential to be great, perhaps the life of adversity that this child will be born into will be the environment neccesary to create greatness.

Or maybe none of this will happen, and the child will be an average person, special in no way other than that we discussed its life here on this message board.

Tell the lady that what she has in her womb is not a burden, but a gift. Tell her that life has given her certain cards for a reason, and she can either throw them down and become nothing, und she can take what she got and make the very best of it.
WebmastersRe: How To Market My PHP And MySQL Skills by markesh(m): 9:25am On Nov 13, 2006
Personally, I believe that what you need to do is go to people and TELL them that they need you. For example, go to a private secondary school close to where you live, and tell them that they need a website. Offer them a quote, show them an example, and if the owner has any vision, he will hire you.

The first secret to selling is that people have to know that you are offering something.

WebmastersWhy Is Co.ng Not Available? by markesh(op): 7:33pm On Oct 30, 2006
For some reason, the nigerian domain registration is controlled by a single old man living somewhere in the southern part of Africa. He personally approves every single nigerian domain registration, and this process can take long. Considering the number of Nigerians online, and considering that there are 120 million Nigerians, this is very frankly - a SILLY situation.

Nigerians should protest and make the Nigerian domain name freely available for registration!

HealthRe: My Body Discharges Electricity by markesh(m): 1:31pm On Sep 05, 2006
If you work with computers in an environment where there is an airconditioner, the air coming from the air conditioner will dry the air. Because your hands are dry, constantly rubbing your fingers on the keyboard is going to cause static electric charges to build up in your fingers, and probably because your shoes as well as the chair you are sitting on are isolated, your entire body will charge. Because of the dry air around you, your body cannot discharge into the air, and will act like a molecular battery. When you touch a person after an entire day of sitting at the PC, your body will discharge into them, causing the electric shock.

To solve the problem, get a small bowl of water, and regularly dip your fingers into it. You will discharge the static electricity. Alternative, make sure that you are not isolated from the ground (through rubber carpet, rubber shoes, etc), and you will never build up the charge in the first place.

Lastly, because the air in nigeria is very humid, staying outside for a bit will lead to the static electricity discharging into the air.

Hey Guys,
LiteratureRe: I Am Writing a Novel and Need Some Help by markesh(m): 10:49am On Jul 03, 2006
The vigilante groups are just groups of village boys. There is no real structure, apart from a loose command structure. Most of them are the young men who usually drive okadas around, but seeing that they have nothing to do, they join those groups.

Fact of the matter is this : vigilante groups in the niger delta are hardly dangerous, and they know it themselves. They have guns and all, but they don't actually use them. They are there to make money, and they know that killing would take away all chances of them actually making the money.

On the other hand, the Anti-thief vigilante groups such as the Aba Bakassi boys are a totally different matter. They are strongly structured, they have money, and they revel in the power they have. They are actually brutal, they kill people and they know that they get stronger the more fear they inspire.

Which of the groups are you interested in?

PoliticsRe: Death Penalty For Exam Malpractices In Nigeria? - Satire by markesh(m): 6:08pm On Jun 14, 2006
And is anything new about this? Think how many people are burnt to death daily without trial, because they steal a pencil or they are 'witches'. Nigeirans have to cheat, because the entire education system is a mess. Look at the silly books that they give us to read in secondary school. What is there to learn? Why do we have to dissect a tomatoe?

Education is Nigeria is useless. That is why people cheat. If you want to execute people, execute the senior staff of MacMillans.

If I were you, I would not attempt to bribe people at the airport. Nowadays, it is a risky business. They are much more honest nowadays than before, a and you may meet the wrong person.
FamilyRe: Nigerians And Teen Pregnancy by markesh(m): 8:12am On May 18, 2006
Americans and teen pregnancy, that is the real question. Why do so many black american women allow themselves to get impregnated by men who do not stay with them? You are creating a society of criminals that way, because say what you want, children raised by a mother alone are always more out of control than those from a full family.
Music/RadioRemember Those Magazines Where They Would Write "lyrics" Of Songs? by markesh(op): 12:49pm On May 17, 2006
I remember that when I was young, they used to have these paper magazines where various things would be printed, for example, some sexually explicit cartoons. Also, they used to have lyrics of songs, as transcribed by somebody. The funny thing was that the people who wrote the lyrics had no idea of what they were hearing. They used to write utter nonsense, and back in the day, not knowing any better, I used to believe them.

Does anyone have any of those magazines. The old ones from the early 90s or late 80s? If you have, abeg scan and post for us, let us laugh small. I'm sure they will become collectors item before long, because nowadays they are just getting the lyrics from the internet anyways,
FamilyRe: Am I Having An Affair With This Smart Girl? by markesh(m): 10:44pm On Mar 12, 2006
My own opinion is this - if you are going to do it, just make sure that nobody discovers it. I'm not saying that you should do it, but if you do do it any anybody knows about it, your marriage will suffer. It is better to cheat and not let anybody know than to cheat and break someones heart.
BusinessRe: Bank Consolidation Fall-out by markesh(m): 9:20pm On Mar 02, 2006
A bank is not an area where you want to go to ariaria market, and 20 Uches are shouting for you to come and deposit money in their backyard. A bank is something that has to be reliable. The economic situation of the country is in many ways dependent on the economic situations of the banks.

And about the collapse of banks when people withdraw a lot -> a bank with a lot of capital can absorb a lot of withdrawals without having to lock people out of their accounts. As such, when there is bad news, the bank functions as usual (in public perception), and so there is faith in the bank, and people put their money back. It creates a stable economic enviroment.

However, if the banking sector is such that is were wildly competitive, and banks are rising and crashing like waves on the beach, people will start moving their money out of the country to keep it safe. And you know what that does to the economy and exchange rate.

The pill that makes you healthy is bitter. Was everything good the old way? No! Things had to change, and they have. Stop complaining whenever nigeria changes, or nigeria will always stay the same.
BusinessRe: Bank Consolidation Fall-out by markesh(m): 5:28pm On Mar 02, 2006
I've been away for a long time, so I have not really followed the whole consolidation thing. But to argue from the other side, it looks to me like it makes sense to consolidate the banks in an enviroment that is as financially unstable as nigeria.

A bank makes money with investment. A bank takes your money and puts it to use by investing it locally. If a bank makes a bad investment, it needs to be able to still have enough money to repay everyone who has money in the bank.

Let me construct a hypthetical situation for you:

Imagine you put your N25.000 in a bank where people have put in an amount of maybe 300 Million Naira. Imagine that 100 Million of that money is tied up in investment that cannot easily be liquidated, for example farmland. From it's previous business, it is maybe 50 million in profit, meaning that it has perhaps 100 Million cash stored somewhere, 100 Million in hard assets and 100 Million in investment that can easily be liquidated.

In Newswatch, an article appears that claims that the chairman of the bank has embezzled 10 million Naira and fled the country.

Everyone immediately tries to withdraw their money, because they are afraid. In a week, the bank has 70 million withdrawn. It knows that it cannot pay everyone else, so it locks its doors, and prevents people from pulling money. Everyone gets afraid, the traders cannot pull money anymore, and they are afraid that they will never see their money again.

You know how nigerians are - as soon as the bank allows people to pull money, everyone will remove their money, and the bank will collapse. It cannot even liqidate its assets at a good price because it is owing money, so it will not be able to repay everyone.

You will be one of the unlucky ones, and your money will disappear.

It is easy for me to speak this way as I of course do not have that problem, but I believe that from an economical point of view, the bank consolidation makes sense.

WebmastersRe: Choosing a Domain Name? Factors to Consider by markesh(m): 3:17pm On Jan 17, 2006
If you are starting something new, remember that branding is more important than describing your business. For example, let us say you sell medicine online. You may think it is a good idea to register the domain www.medicine-cheap-online.com, but actually, it is not, because people forget that name. You need to _brand_ your product. For example, let us say this website had been called nigeria-chat-forum.com, it would be a lot less succesful, because people searching for it will find other forums that have to do with nigeria.

The most succesful companies (and products) are companies that have strong brand names that in most cases have nothing to do with the product, for example:

Mercedes Benz
Google
Yahoo
Panadol

And even with crazy names that are difficult to remember, you can still become the biggest sites online, like slashdot.org. Remember to brand your product, and not to try to add the functionality of the product into the name or domain name.

As we all know, pidgin is changing from day to day. My idea was to store the pidgin me I grew up with, and try and learn some new ones. So I set up a wiki at http://www.pidgin-english.com, and I've added some of my pidgin together with some examples on how to use it. Abeg, guys should also add some words, as this our language is changing everyday.
