The governors withdrew because their case have no grounds. The case was supposed to have been filed by political parties, not states, because states are not party to the elections and are not contestants. The states that instituted the case are "meddlesome-interlopers", that is what the court would have told them.

Disobeying a lower court is a serious offence, disobeying the supreme Court is unthinkable. Whatever ruling the supreme Court gives becomes part of the Constitution .
