THE West African Examinations Council, WAEC, on Wednesday, in Lagos, released the April/May West African Senior School Certificate Examinations, WASSCE, results for this year.

A total of 1,572,396 candidates sat the examination, out of which 923,486 (representing 49.98%) obtained credits and above in at least five mandatory subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

It was 52.97 per cent and 59.22 percent of the total candidates who sat the exam in 2016 and 2017 that had the similar results, while their numbers were 31.28 per cent and 38.68 per cent in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

The Head of National Office, WAEC Nigeria, Mr. Olu Adenipekun, announced the release of the results at a press conference in Ogba-Ikeja, saying out of the total candidates who sat the exam, 1, 470,338 of them (representing 93.51%) had their results fully processed and released, while 102, 058 candidates (representing 6.49%) still had a few of their subjects being processed due to errors traceable to them in the course of registration or writing the examination.

He also said cases of exam malpractice were recorded but the candidates involved were fewer than that of last year and that their cases were under investigation after which they would know their fate as regards their results, either to be released or cancelled.

Giving a further breakdown, Adenipekun disclosed that a total of 823,424 males (representing 52.36 per cent) and 748,972 females (representing 47.63 per cent) sat the exam and that 1, 328 of them are candidates with special needs including 251 visually impaired.

Adenipekun, however, said the performance of candidates this year compared with those of last three years was fluctuated.

He urged all education stakeholders, especially governments, schools, students and parents to give more attention to the education need of the children.

He, however, said candidates could now start checking their results on the council’s website, given at www.waecdirect.org.

The Embassy of Ecuador has refuted fake news published by several media houses over Ecuador and Nigeria signing a visa-free agreement for Nigerian citizens.

FINANCIAL WATCH gathered through a rebuttal sent by Mr. Jaime T. Campas, the Charge D’affaires Of Ecuador To Nigeria; “The Embassy of Ecuador is presently headed by the Charge D’Affaires of Ecuador to Nigeria, Mr. Jaime Campas, as the former Ambassador, His Excellency, Leopoldo Rovayo completed his tour and left Nigeria for his new position as Ambassador in Belarus on the 27th of April, 2018”.

“The news about the Embassy signing a visa free agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria, for Nigerian citizens, as published by different media houses is completely false, and should be disregarded as the former Ambassador to Nigeria whose name was mentioned in the publication to have reached the agreement made no such deal while in charge of the Embassy in Nigeria and neither in his absence”.

“Any news regarding Ecuador Embassy concerning issuance of visas and other activities of the mission, will be sent out directly by the Embassy of Ecuador. The Nigeria media and the general public should take note”.

“The Embassy condemns this development and urge the media houses to permanently delete, from the online platforms, this fake news as it did not originate from the Embassy, to avoid misunderstanding that could affect the good people of Nigeria who might want to migrate to Ecuador”.

“The Embassy would not hesitate to explore legal options on the media houses if the fake news circulating online are not permanently deleted to avoid further misinformation of the public”.

“The Embassy assures the good people of Nigeria, willing to travel to Ecuador that the Embassy will continue to support and facilitate their visa application processes as we have been doing it so far”.
