Politics / Chinese-owned Banks To Establish Operations In Nigeria by maximunimpact(m): 8:25am On Sep 22, 2021 |
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Cui Jianchin, has said he is in talks with Chinese-owned banks to establish operations in Nigeria to boost Nigeria’s economy and expand trade relations between the two nations. Mr Jianchin disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja while addressing journalists during the commemoration of the 2021 Chinese Moon Festival and China-Nigeria Cultural week, NAN reported. He explained that establishing Chinese banks in the country would also be a point of discussion during the China-Nigeria Binational Committee meeting. “Before my departure from Beijing to Abuja, I talked to several banks in China. When you list the world’s 10 big banks, six are in China. The banking sector is very important because, without money, we cannot build our industries,” Jianchin said “What I am thinking here is best to talk to the governor of the central bank, and how we can allow the Chinese banks to run office here and now, they are doing the feasibility studies on that. “I am working hard that in the binational meeting, I hope we can make a big decision and give a big push to let the banking industry and insurance industry because financial integration and institutions are key,” Mr Jianchin added. “If you go to China, you will find our banking industry is very powerful, not only for business but a change in the way of life. Extolling the extant China-Nigeria trade relations, the Chinese ambassador noted that the trade volume between China and Nigeria was nearly $20 billion, increasing from 2020’s $19.2 billion. According to Mr Jianchin, the 2021 celebration is special as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of China-Nigeria’s bilateral relations and that the countries share October 1 national day. He disclosed that the Chinese embassy would honour 50 Nigerian employees of Chinese companies in Nigeria for their outstanding performance and contribution to strengthening diplomatic ties. https://www.financialwatchngr.com/2021/09/22/chinese-owned-banks-to-establish-operations-in-nigeria/ OAM4J, Mynd44

Business / BREAKING: Nigeria’s GDP Records 5% Growth For Q2, Highest Since 2015 by maximunimpact(m): 9:50am On Aug 26, 2021 |
Nigeria has recorded its third consecutive quarterly growth, NBS reported on August 26, 2021. Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 5.01% (year-on-year) in real terms in the second quarter of 2021, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said. The NBS disclosed this in the latest report on the nation’s GDP entitled Nigerian Gross Domestic Product Report (Q2 2021) released on Thursday. It explained that the increase in the GDP index marked three consecutive quarters of growth following the negative growth rates recorded in the second and third quarters of 2020. “The Q2 2021 growth rate was higher than the -6.10% growth rate recorded in Q2 2020 and the 0.51% recorded in Q1 2021 year-on-year, indicating the return of business and economic activity near levels seen prior to the nationwide implementation of COVID-19 related restrictions,” the report read. “The steady recovery observed since the end of 2020, with the gradual return of commercial activity, as well as local and international travel, accounted for the significant increase in growth performance relative to the second quarter of 2020 when nationwide restrictions took effect. “Year to date, real GDP grew 2.70% in 2021 compared to -2.18% for the first half of 2020.” But the real GDP (quarter-on-quarter) grew at -0.79% in Q2 2021 compared to Q1 2021, indicating slightly slower economic activity than the preceding quarter due largely to seasonality. In the quarter under review, the NBS revealed that the aggregate GDP stood at N39,123,713.32 million in nominal terms – higher than the second quarter of 2020 with aggregate GDP of N34,023,197.60 million, indicating a year-on-year nominal growth rate of 14.99%. It added that the nominal GDP growth rate in Q2 2021 was higher than -2.80% growth recorded in the second quarter of 2020 when economic activities slowed sharply at the outset of the pandemic. “The Q2 2021 nominal growth rate was also higher than 12.25% growth recorded in Q1 2021,” the agency said. https://www.financialwatchngr.com/2021/08/26/breaking-nigerias-gdp-records-5-growth-for-q2-highest-since-2015/ OAM4J, Mynd44, FOD, puskin, dominique |
Business / CBN Places Limit Of N1m Per Transaction For Microfinance Banks Loan by maximunimpact(m): 10:19am On Aug 22, 2021 |
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has pegged maximum loan limit for Microfinance Banks (MfBs) at N1 million per transaction. The apex bank gave this directive in a circular to all MfBs titled: Cessation of non-permissible activities by MfBs”. The MfB operators were also strictly prohibited from engaging in foreign exchange transactions. The CBN further directed the MfBs to primarily focus on providing financial services to retail and/or micro clients, microcredit and retail transactions not exceeding N500,000 per transaction for tier 2 unit MFBs and N1 million for other categories. Also, micro credit facilities shall constitute a minimum of 80 per cent of total loans portfolio for MFBs. The apex bank also warned MfBs to desist from offering non-permissible activities, especially foreign exchange and wholesale banking transactions. The regulator noted that it observed that some MFBs are engaging in non-permissible activities which pose risk to the financial system. The circular, which was signed by the Director of Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Ibrahim Tukur, stated: “The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has observed the activities of some MFBs that have gone beyond the remit of their operating licenses by engaging in non-permissible activities, especially wholesale banking, foreign exchange transactions and others. “Given the comparatively low capitalization of MFBs, dealing in wholesale and/or foreign exchange transactions are a significant risk with dire consequences for financial system stability thus, therefore, become imperative to remind all MFBs to strictly comply with the extant Revised Regulatory and Supervisory Guidelines for MFBs in Nigeria 2012 (the guidelines). The CBN promised it will continue to monitor developments in the MfB sector and apply severe regulatory sanctions for breaches of extant regulations, including revoking the licence of non-compliant MfBs. https://www.financialwatchngr.com/2021/08/22/cbn-places-limit-of-n1m-per-transaction-for-microfinance-banks-loan/ naijacutee, FOD, puskin, dominique

Investment / 32% Of Nigerians Use Bitcoin — World’s Highest Percentage by maximunimpact(m): 12:38pm On Aug 15, 2021 |
On Saturday, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey posted about Nigeria being the highest percentage in the world to use cryptocurrencies. The CEO seems to be surprised as he tweets “Wow: 32% of Nigerians own Bitcoin, the highest percentage in the world.” According to Statista, Nigeria is indeed the first among the countries that are using/owns Bitcoin. Vietnam (21%) goes second, followed by the Philippines with 20%. Other countries included on the list were Turkey, Peru, Switzerland, India, China, U.S, Germany, and Japan. Previously, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo of Nigeria shared that he supports cryptocurrency. In most countries, currency collapses have caused hardship to most people. Argentina, Brazil, China, Mexico, Russia, Thailand, Turkey, Indonesia, South Africa, and Lebanon, for instance, have all gone through at least one currency devaluation cycle since the 1970s. Bitcoin, on the other hand, has a fixed and predetermined monetary policy. Alongside Jack’s tweet, he also linked an open letter the US Senator Elizabeth Warren written by a crypto enthusiast. It can be recalled, Senator Warren has been publicly sharing her views against Bitcoin and the whole crypto itself. Thus, she’s been pushing tough crypto regulations in the Senate. In the open letter entitled ‘Why Progressives Should Love Bitcoin: An Open Letter to Senator Elizabeth Warren’, writer Samantha Messing said, As the Nigerian naira plummets in value, Bitcoin has become a necessity. 32 percent of Nigerians own Bitcoin, the highest percentage in the world. Furthermore, remittances into Nigeria exceeded $17 billion in 2020, and a substantial proportion of this value is conveyed in Bitcoin. Lastly, she said, Nigeria has one of the youngest populations in the world. Thus, the writer believes this progressive cohort increasingly embraces Bitcoin. Ending her open letter with a handful of syllabus links regarding Bitcoin as she wants people to truly understand it. https://www.financialwatchngr.com/2021/08/15/32-of-nigerians-use-bitcoin-worlds-highest-percentage/ dominique, mukina2
