BusinessRe: Naira Depreciates Further As Dealers Await New FX Regime by maximunimpact(m): 1:22pm On May 17, 2016
For those who understand the real value of naira or its purchasing value, it is far way over-valued. The CBN has so far insisted on N199 to 1$, but when buying something from any shop abroad or online it never exchanged below N305 to 1$. It became more laughable recently when the FG directed oil marketers to trade at N280 to 1$, a move many experts see as double standard.

Although there is ongoing reports that the CBN will soon unveil a new FX regime, such as this report; whatever that means, anything less than N300 to 1$ as official rate is unacceptable. At this point the government's rigidity on devaluation is not borne out of sound economic exposure, it is a brazen betrayal of the reality on ground.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has located the whereabouts of N15billion of the N23.29billion ($115m) allegedly offered as bribe by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in connection with the 2015 elections.

The bribe was for the purpose of compromising the result of the elections which the party’s presidential candidate Dr. Goodluck Jonathan lost to Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fourteen directors of four oil firms suspected of substantially bankrolling the N23.29b poll bribery scandal have also been identified by the anti-graft agency while some former Ministers arrested in connection with the scandal were battling for bail last night.

They are: former Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, Dr Nurudeen Muhammad (N 500,000,000) and ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs in the last dispensation, Ambassador Aminu Bashir Wali (N 950,000,000).

Some of their former colleagues are shocked by the alleged involvement of the ex-ministers in the disbursement of the slush funds.

Well placed sources said last night that the EFCC had traced over N15billion of the bribe cash as follows: the Seven North-West states- N5,097,064,000; REC and five others- N681m to; Cross River PDP chairman- N500m; INEC officials in Oyo and Ogun- N359m; Fidelity Bank- profit of N49.7m from the deal; two politicians from South-East- N700m.

PoliticsFG To Militants: We Are Open To Dialogue by maximunimpact(op): 4:20pm On May 06, 2016
The federal government has condemned the attack on Chevron Valve Platform in Warri South-West Local government area of Delta state, saying it is open to dialogue.

A group known as the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) claimed responsibility for the attack, threatening to cripple the nation’s economy if the government does not respond to its demand.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, Paul Boroh, special adviser to the president on Niger Delta and coordinator of the presidential amnesty programme, said the government was willing to discuss, no matter the grievances of the group.

“Pipeline vandalism is an avoidable self-inflicted agony. It is unreasonable to engage in such criminal activity not only because of the resultant economic effect on the country but particularly as it also negatively affects the Niger Delta environment,” Boroh said.

“The act of vandalising pipelines is counter-productive apart from it being a crime against the state. Those involved in this nefarious activity are economic and environmental saboteurs. It will do well for them to refrain from it, as my office is always open to dialogue regardless of their grievances.

“The federal government already has in place a well-structured reintegration programme for youths of the region, which has helped in maintaining the peace and stabilising security of the region. The Amnesty Programme has made militancy unattractive in the region mainly because of the government’s sincerity and commitment to the programme. The proper thing is for those behind such activity to embrace dialogue.”

Commending security agencies for their commitment to ensuring peace in the region, he warned that his office would not hesitate to delist and bring to book any beneficiary of the programme that engages in criminal activity.

Meanwhile, the joint military force (JMF) in the Niger Delta said it had arrested 16 suspects who allegedly vandalised pipelines and engaged in illegal bunkering in Delta.

Isa Ado, spokesman of the force, made this known during a news conference at the 222 Battalion Headquarters in Ughelli in Delta on Friday.

Ado said that the suspects were nabbed in two separate operations in the state.

According to him, in one of the operations, the force recovered 124 pieces of oil pipes valued at over N18 million at Otokutu village in Ughelli.

He said the pipes, meant for a project at Aburah, were stolen from the oil fields operated by Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), adding that four suspects, including an NPDC staff member, were arrested.

Other items recovered included a Toyota Sports Utility Van (SUV) kept at the 222 battalion headquarters.

Ado said in the second operation: “Our troops from the Maritime Component, NNS DELTA, found and destroyed many illegal oil bunkering sites between April 22 and 24.

“The sites were located around Tagola community, near Egwa 1 in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta.

“Items recovered include six 10,000 litres capacity storage tanks, 30 drums and plastic tanks containing substances suspected to be stolen crude.

“Also, 12 suspects were arrested along SPDC-Forcados Line with two large boats carrying 39 plastic tanks filled with illegally refined diesel and 13 pumping machines.

“The items and suspects are in custody of NNS DELTA for preliminary investigations.”

Ado urged community leaders to discourage their youths from vandalism, and assist the force with credible information that will lead to arrest of culprits.

Christianity EtcRe: All The Truth About TITHE by maximunimpact(m): 4:53am On May 04, 2016
soulpeppersoup:
Do you know Christianity is anchored on Jesus resurrection not His death?

If you know that, then know also that the resurrection made him our high priest who present our offerings and sacrifice to the Lord (His father).
If you don't give tithe it means you don't believe Jesus receives your tithe in heaven, Hebrews 7:8 and if you don't believe He receives your tithe it means you don't believe he is really alive. That means your not a christian since He did not raise you up from the dead and your not in heaven.

Tithing is as a prove of Christ resurrection as communion is to the remembrance of His death.
This is the thinking of a carnal man, do you know tithe was never paid with money by those who once paid it during the time of law? do you even know why tithe was instituted? the priests and levites do no work or have any inheritance, the tithes was what they leaved off. Since Jesus is now our high priest in your mind do you still think he needs our tithes to survive? Does he eat food or money? Stop deceiving yourself and your ignorant followers, i believe you are a pastor who depends on tithe to survive, so its no surprise you can go this length to say Jesus collects tithe in heaven. Better still quote one scripture stating Jesus collects tithes, even if it exists (which never does) are you now Jesus the high priest who eats tithes? barbecue its amazing how pastors show red eyes defending tithes as if their lives depends on it (actually it does)
Christianity EtcRe: Let's Talk About Being Born Again by maximunimpact(op): 4:25am On May 04, 2016
Splinz:
Soon the whole world will see the fulfillment of Revelation 11:15: “The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever.” Just as there is no doubt that countries today represent real, literal, physical kingdoms (governments), there can be no doubt, from just this passage, that God’s coming government is also real and literal.
Jesus Christ was born to be a King—to rule all nations of the earth forever with the help of other spirit-composed kings (Revelation 1:6). This is the central theme of the entire Bible. Notice: “And out of His [Christ’s] mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron…and on His thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS” (Rev. 19:15-16).

Entering the Kingdom

The Bible teaches that the kingdom of God rules OVER the people and nations of the earth. The nations are not actually part of the kingdom, any more than the average citizen of any country is part of the government that rules over them. One must ENTER the kingdom of God to be in it. Therefore, we must ask: As distinct from those who are governed by it, who is actually IN the kingdom?
In I Corinthians 15:50-51, Paul stated, “Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I show you a mystery…” Certainly, this is a mystery to almost everyone—that flesh and blood human beings cannot enter the kingdom of God. It would be helpful to read the entirety of this “resurrection chapter” of I Corinthians 15. Only at the resurrection are human beings (all true Christians) changed (born again) from flesh to spirit.

A series of verses in John 3 is commonly misunderstood by those who believe that they can be “born again” in this life (while they are still composed of flesh and blood) and see the kingdom of God.

In this account, Nicodemus, a Pharisee, approached Christ and acknowledged in verse 2: “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God.” He plainly admitted that they knew who Christ was and who had sent Him to earth. Notice that Nicodemus spoke for more than himself when he stated, “we know.” He was referring to himself and the other Pharisees who recognized who and what Jesus Christ was. They could not deny the power of God evident in the miracles that Christ was performing.
The religious leaders, the Pharisees, well understood that He was a “teacher come from God” bringing the truth. They still called Him a blasphemer, drunkard, heretic, seditionist, bastard, ignorant, demon-possessed, false prophet and more—and crucified Him!
Many people see the plain truth of the Bible, yet choose to ignore it in order to hold to their own traditions (Mark 7:7) and ideas!
Christ told Nicodemus, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (vs. 3). He explained that only by being born again can one actually “see” God’s kingdom. So, there is a limitation on who can see the kingdom. But there is no limitation on physical people seeing either a church or an empire. Anyone of any religion or belief can see any other physical item.
Grasp these critical points that Christ is making!
In verse 5, Christ states that unless one is “born of water and of the Spirit,” he “cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” Yes, the kingdom is something that can be “entered into”—but Christ explains His “born of water [baptism] and of the Spirit” phrase in verse 6: “That which is born of the flesh IS flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit IS spirit.”
Flesh and blood cannot enter into the kingdom of God—but spirit can! Because Christ wanted to allow no room for misunderstanding, He likened spirit to wind. Wind, like spirit, is invisible. It cannot be seen. Therefore, those in the kingdom must be composed of spirit.

Finally, the kingdom of God cannot include flesh and blood people!

NOTE: The above teaching is culled from: What Is the Kingdom of God? Written by David C. Pack, founder and Pastor General of The Restored Church of God, Editor-in-Chief of The Real Truth magazine, and voice of The World to Come program.
I appreciate your civility this time, i believe you are open to learn, just as i am.

But the above quoted article is erroneous in that it used the resurrection teaching to explain born again or the new birth. Please bear in mind that Resurrection is an established fact and scriptural teaching, there are two kinds of resurrection, one a resurrection to spirit life in heaven to rule with Christ as co-rulers 1 Corinthians 15:50-52, Revelation 7:4-5, two an earthly resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous - Acts 24:15, the first resurrection is what your quoted article explained and not born again.

Now take your time and read this:

"A Nation Born at One Time"

"Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall a land be born in one day?
Shall a nation be brought forth in one moment? For as soon as Zion was in labor
she brought forth her children."—Isaiah 66:8, ESV

The new covenant came into operation at Pentecost 33C.E., which, according to the Jewish calendar was Sivan 6; and with that the old Law covenant became obsolete. It is interesting what Insight on the Scriptures notes regarding this date: "The Jews traditionally hold that Pentecost corresponded to the time of the giving of the Law at Sinai, when Israel became a distinguished people. It was early in the third month (Sivan) that the Israelites gathered at Sinai and received the Law. (Ex 19:1) Just as Moses as mediator was used to introduce Israel into the Law covenant, so Jesus Christ as Mediator of spiritual Israel* now brought that new nation into the new covenant." ―Vol. 2, page 599; (*Note: The term "spiritual Israel" is not found in the Bible.)

It had taken the nation of Israel a period of several hundred years to form; and its birth, with the covenant made at Mount Sinai, had been accompanied with great birth pangs, labor pains. But their new birth, with the new covenant, was going to be astonishingly different. It would take place in one day, before there could even be any "birth pangs."

"Before she began to come into labor pains she gave birth. Before birth pangs could come to her, she even gave deliverance to a male child. Who has heard of a thing like this? Who has seen things like these? Will a land be brought forth with labor pains in one day? Or will a nation be born at one time? For Zion has come into labor pains as well as given birth to her sons." ―Isaiah 66:7,8

Zion, in Jerusalem, was where Jehovah's temple stood and where God's sons were worshiping him according to the old Law covenant, although they continually broke it. But it was not this Zion that Isaiah prophesied would give birth to her sons. Because the sacred ark was situated in Jehovah's temple on Mount Zion, Zion came to represent Jehovah's presence and heavenly realities. Quoting Insight on the Scriptures, "Zion became a mountain especially holy to Jehovah when David had the sacred Ark transferred there. Later, the designation “Zion” embraced the temple area on Mount Moriah (where the Ark was moved during Solomon’s reign) and the term was, in fact, applied to the entire city of Jerusalem. (Compare Isa 1:8; 8:18; see MOUNTAIN OF MEETING.) Since the Ark was associated with Jehovah’s presence and because Zion was a symbol of heavenly realities, Zion was referred to as the place of God’s dwelling and the place from which help, blessing, and salvation would come." ―Vol. 2, page 1236.

Before his ascension to heaven Jesus had told his disciples not to withdraw from Jerusalem, "but keep waiting for what the Father has promised." While his disciples had already been baptized by John the Baptist in water, showing "that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven," they were about to be "baptized in holy spirit not many days after this." (Mark 1:4, 8, NLT; Acts 1:4) As the Father had promised by means of the prophet Isaiah, Zion was about to give birth to her sons and his new nation was about to be born in one day, "at one time." The account in Acts tells us what happened when Jesus' twelve apostles and 108 disciples were gathered together:

"On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability." ―Acts 2:1-4, NLT.

Regarding the Spirit, Jesus had told Nicodemus that "the wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." (John 3:cool On the last night with his disciples Jesus had promised them "the helper, the holy spirit, which the Father will send in my name, that one will teach you all things and bring back to your minds all the things I told you." (John 14:26; 15:26; 16:7) Now, on this day of Pentecost, God sent the promised helper by pouring out the holy spirit upon the 120 disciples. Since the holy spirit is not visible to the eyes, God made it evident when it was accompanied by the sound from heaven "like the roaring of a mighty windstorm" (NLT), so loud that it brought the multitude, that had gathered in Jerusalem for the festival, running to the house where the disciples were gathered. They could hear the sound but could not see where it came from. Inside, the holy spirit made itself evident when "flames or tongues of fire" settled upon each of the 120 individuals receiving it. —Acts 2:2-6.

The disciples had previously already been "born of water," having been baptized which made forgiveness of their sins possible once Christ had paid the ransom, resulting in their clean standing before God. (1 Cor. 6:11; Heb. 9:14) Now they had been baptized also with holy spirit which filled them with "all the fullness that God gives," empowering them to understand and "grasp what is the breadth and length and height and depth." (Eph. 3:18,19) Full of holy spirit, the apostle Peter was able to explain to the crowd that had gathered the significance of what had just occurred, according to Joel's prophecy: “And after that it must occur that I shall pour out my spirit on every sort of flesh, and your sons and your daughters will certainly prophesy. As for your old men, dreams they will dream. As for your young men, visions they will see. And even on the menservants and on the maidservants in those days I shall pour out my spirit."
—Joel 2:28,29.

With the outpouring of his holy spirit Jehovah brought the new covenant into force, thus giving birth to his new nation—his household, made up of Christ's disciples. As foretold by his prophet Isaiah, his new nation was "born in one day," "in one moment." It was not Zion, the city of Jerusalem, that gave birth to God's new nation, but rather this came from Jehovah himself: "'Shall I bring to the point of birth and not cause to bring forth?' says the LORD; 'shall I, who cause to bring forth, shut the womb?' says your God." —Isa. 66:8,9; ESV.

Jehovah began to lay the foundation of his new nation with his chosen twelve apostles and 108 other disciples, all of them natural offspring of Abraham; with "Christ Jesus himself [as] the foundation cornerstone." (see Summary) Keeping "the covenant in force for the many for one week [of years]," Jehovah continued to choose exclusively from among faithful Jews for another three and a half years to add to the foundation of his household, until 36 C.E., when Cornelius became the first Gentile to be added until the full "foreordained" number of 144,000 would be fulfilled. —Daniel 9:27; Acts 10:1, 44-48; Romans 11:13, 17-24; Ephesians 2:19-22.

Of what use is a foundation, unless a building is constructed upon it? (Luke 6:47,48; 14:29,30) A foundation is of a specific size, having definite dimensions, which includes the one cornerstone. On the other hand, that which is build upon it is only limited by what the foundation can bear. After laying the foundation on the day of Pentecost, Jehovah also immediately build upon the foundation with "about three thousand souls [that] were added." These three thousand had responded to Peter's speech and consequently repented and were baptized for forgiveness of their sins. (Acts 2:37-41) Likely Jehovah chose a number of them in order to add them to the 120 foundation stones. But most of the newly baptized disciples were built upon the foundation. The two loaves of newly ripened grain that were presented to God at Pentecost under the old covenant had pictured these two groups: 1. The anointed disciples who would eventually number 144,000, and who were the foundation, with Jesus as the foundation cornerstone; and 2. The countless others, "all those who [are] rightly disposed for everlasting life," who are build upon this foundation, and whose natural hope of life on earth is assured by Jehovah. (Rev. 14:1, 3; 7:9,10; John 3:16; Acts 13:48; 1 John 4:9) Both groups were presented before Jehovah on that day; both taken from among sinful mankind as the loaves, having been baked leavened, symbolized.* (See footnote) —Leviticus 23:16-20.

The 120 disciples, who were anointed with holy spirit as the foundation stones, and the 3000 who were baptized that day, were thus "born again" and brought into the new covenant, becoming God's sons for a second time since the old covenant was from this day on no longer valid. Samaritans, and later Gentiles, would also be born from God, but for their first time. (Rom. 8:14; Gal. 4:4-7) In this way "the whole building [was] being harmoniously joined together, growing into a holy temple for Jehovah," and "built up together into a place for God to inhabit by spirit." —Ephesians 2:19-22; Hebrews 3:6; 1 Peter 2:4-6.

All who belong to Jehovah have been "born of water" (by baptism) and are also born of the spirit. It is God's spirit that teaches us to know the things of God, "for the spirit searches into all things, even the deep things of God. . . But a physical man does not receive the things of the spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot get to know them, because they are examined spiritually." (1 Cor. 2:10-14) All of God's faithful people have God's spirit, as a recent Watchtower article acknowledged: "Genuine anointed Christians. . . do not believe that they necessarily have more holy spirit than their companions of the other sheep have." ―The Watchtower, May 1, 2007, page 31.

We are born from God, according to his will and promise, and are brought into the new covenant as we are adopted as his sons and daughters. As such we become members of his household, some as foundation stones, others built upon this foundation; and if we remain there, faithful, we will inherit the blessings that Jehovah had originally intended for Adam's offspring, had Adam remained faithful. —2 Cor. 6:16-18; Gen. 1:27,28; Ps. 37:10,11, 29; Rev. 20:3,4.

Do not allow anyone to rob you of your precious relationship with your heavenly Father, for you were bought with a price and have been brought into the new covenant, born from water (by your baptism) and the Spirit (generously poured out upon us), which has been made possible by the "blood of the covenant." —1 Cor. 6:19,20; 7:23.

"When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Because of his grace he declared us righteous and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life." ―Titus 3:4-7, New Living Translation.

Christianity EtcWhy Does God Sometimes Allow People To Be In Error? by maximunimpact(op): 11:20pm On May 02, 2016
True worship is never practiced outside the truth, in fact what makes worship acceptable to Jehovah is if it is done in truth. John 4:24 says: For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth." (NIV).

The significance of truth is further emphasized in John 8:32 - And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
(KJV). But what is truth? Pilate asked Jesus during His trial (John 18:38), not that he wanted to know the truth, but he obviously asked merely because he doesn't believe any truth exist.

Today there are thousands of denominations, faiths, sects, groups, and congregations who professed to be Christians, all claiming to have the truth. More scary is the fact that some regard themselves as the sole true worshiper of the true God.

I have searched in many of those religions that claim to know the truth, and i find many errors and false teachings going around. Some sincerely accepts that they have made mistakes in the past, and maybe also accept that there are still aspect of their current understanding of the truth that needs the "light to be brighter", but the reason given for being in error whether previously or presently is that by being in error they might learn from their mistakes and that draws them closer to God.
Is that really so?

There has been many instances where God hardens the heart of men from the truth, Pharaoh of Egypt is a perfect example, Exodus 9:12 - But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart and he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said to Moses. But for what purpose? so that Pharaoh might be punished. Exodus 7:4 - he will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out my divisions, my people the Israelites.

God knows the heart of all men, He knows those whose heart are rightly disposed to receive Him, and to those whose heart are depraved, he blinds their eyes to the truth. John 12:40 - "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them."

Actually there are no excuses why you should remain in false worship, a worship based on lies and untruth, God will surely judge all such ones no matter how innocent the "untruth" may sound. Do not be surprised why most people enjoy hearing only words pleasing to their heart, such things as preaching of material well being and prosperity, since that is what the desire, God allows the operation of error to go to them. 2 Thessalonians 2:11 - And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie (KJV) 1 Kings 22:22 - "'By what means?' the LORD asked. "'I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,' he said. "'You will succeed in enticing him,' said the LORD. 'Go and do it.'.

After reading this and you still chose to remain in false worship there is only on expectation left, there is a clear warning in Revelation 18:4 - Then I heard another voice from heaven say: "'Come out of her, my people,' so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues;(NIV). Come out of what? False worship!

The truth is not hard to find, we only make it complicated when we go beyond what is written in God's word. 1 Corinthians 4:6 - Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, "Do not go beyond what is written." Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other. (NIV).

Finally finding the truth is not possible by human efforts alone, you need the Spirit of God to guide you, John 16:13 - But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. (NIV).

PoliticsBuharimonics: Oby Ezekwesili Spoke As A Politician, Not As Economist by maximunimpact(op): 12:39am On May 02, 2016
The present regime of President Muhammadu Buhari will in 28 days mark one year at the helm of affairs of the largest black nation on the planet. In few days shortly after the euphoria of workers’ day celebration, many pundits both friends and foes of Nigeria will try to give a scorecard of the performance of President Buhari, especially his economic policies which is rightly termed “Buharimonics”, but a renowned chartered accounted in the person of Oby Ezekwesili, a former minister of education is in no mood to wait, she has already adjudged Buhari’s economic policies as “archaic”, that is in her own opinion.

In her recent postulations regarding the direction of the economic policies of the present regime, one fact that can be deduced from her opinion is that this time, she did not speak as an economist, she obviously spoke as a politician, giving no prove or concrete evidence backing up her stance, a point which will immediately be used to dismiss her opinion as an “unclear Elitist Summary”.

In her exact words on Saturday at The Platform, a yearly programme organized by Covenant Christian Center, Ezekwesili lamented the economic situation of the country.

She said the effect of the policies have been detrimental to the masses.

“What did not work in 1984 cannot possibly be a solution in a global economy that’s much more integrated,” she said.

“During the first coming of this our new president, a command and control economic system was adopted, and inflation spiraled, jobs were lost and the economic growth level dipped.

“In over one year, the president is still holding to the premise that command and control is the only way out, and we have lost the single digits inflation status we maintained in past administrations.

“The weakest and the most vulnerable suffer the impact of inflation the most. Enormous power is being abused as a result of archaic and opaque economic policies.”

Those were her exact words in describing Buharimonics, but was she speaking as an economist or a politician? Maybe the later, because I know economists in trying to make their points back them up with logical evidence and facts, a feature clearly missing from her analysis.

Remote and immediate Causes of Present Economic Woes

It is fitting at this point to critically look at the factors leading to present economic situation of the country, while it is cheap to easily put the blame on the present government, it is equally honorable to critically understand how we got to this point.

Before the present government came into power, Nigeria was at a brink of collapse as a result of impunity, brazen looting, and wild spread corruption that led to loss of billions of dollars. The past administration failed Nigeria and Nigerians in many ways which the effect can be felt years after its ouster.

It is no more secrete how the past regime took advantage of the insurgence to divert funds which is supposed to be used in prosecuting the war, this has lingered the security situation of the country to this day.

The power situation in the country was also in comatose when this government came into power as they inherited less than 2000 megawatts.

On the immediate cause of the present economic situation, the fall in oil price globally has thrown most countries into economic crises including Nigeria. When this government came into power, crude oil price was pegged at $60 per barrel, but will soon afterwards slide below $40 per barrel.

Nigeria is an oil dependent country, and with our only exporting commodity loosing market value, it is natural that its negative effects will impact on all sectors of the economy. This fact does not need an economist to explain, and in any constructive criticism against this regime, this point should not be missed, as clearly shown by our renowned chartered accountant in her criticism.

What the government has done to ameliorate the economic situation

Having inherited a baggage of challenges when they came into power such as insecurity, power issues, unemployment, deteriorating healthcare system, corruption etc, President Buhari knew he is in for serious business. Let us take a look at what he has put in place for a sustainable economy:

Diversification of economy: With oil losing its market value, Nigeria got caught in a web of uncertainty. Looking beyond oil became a necessary step which the government has done effectively. This can be seen in the government’s efforts to raise entrepreneurs through programs such as the YES program. This is put in place to make Nigerian youths self-reliant, thereby creating jobs in other sectors such as information and communication technology, agriculture, manufacturing, skill acquisition and capacity building. The government has also been specific about investing heavily in agriculture, as that is a sure way to sustain a long term plan of improving Nigeria’s economy.

Full implementation of TSA: There has been some debates in the past on who originated the policy of a treasury single account (TSA), while it is a general consensus that it was a product of the past regime, all credit must be given to the present government for the full implementation of the laudable policy. TSA has helped the administration to have a firm and full control of its resources, blocking leakages, assisting it to reduce the cost of borrowing and to monitor spending in the MDAs and has so far accounted for a total savings of about 2.7 trillion naira.

Forex policy and stance on “made in Nigeria products”: Oby Ezekwesili made mention of “command and control” which I believe was motivated in the President’s resolve to control the spending habits of Nigerians through the regulation of the dollar flow in the country. While she criticized the forex policy, she did not mention the need to consume locally made goods, which is in the Centre of the present forex policy. The president made it clear that whatever we cannot import as a result of the “dollar crunch”, let us produce locally. This policy on the long run will position Nigeria as a producing nation rather than a consumer of imports.

Fight against corruption: Perhaps the biggest threat to national development, the present regime has done well in curbing the menace, but exactly how Oby Ezekwesili got her theory of Buharimonics encouraging corruption is what is difficult to understand. Well she did not back any of her points with any logical evidence, so her claims can be rightly dismissed as an “unclear Elitist Summary”.

It should be noted that Nigeria is currently facing a lot of economic challenges, but in the process of proffering a solution, there could be sacrifices that every Nigerian should make such as forfeiting luxury, buying more of Nigerian made goods, de-emphasizing white collar jobs for agriculture and entrepreneurship as well as support the fight against corruption no matter whose ass is gored.

Every government needs constructive criticism to succeed, but when politics takes the place of economics, it becomes a case of misplaced priority. As economic experts will soon take over the space giving a one year scorecard to the performance of President Muhammadu Buhari, it is honorable to do so in good fate with logical evidence in order to avoid another case of “unclear Elitist Summary”.
