An Islamic group has queried the widely-held claims that the Sultan of Sokoto is leader of Nigerian Muslims. The group also frowned at Sultan Abubukar Saad’s declaration of Friday as a work-free day, saying it undermines productivity. The group, Oodua Muslim Progressive Council (OMPC), also dismissed as false the long-held view that the that the Sultan of Sokoto is the leader of Muslims in Nigeria. The group’s position was contained in a statement signed by Mallam Abdulnasir Kadir Araoye in response to the call by Professor Ishaq Akintola, scholar and founder of Muslims Right Congress (MURIC), that Friday should be declared a work-free day. The group also described as ill-thought the agitation to make Friday a work-free day in the country. It argued that the aspiration of the Yoruba in the 21st century is to go to space, build a Yoruba territory with cherished values, technological development, industrialization, peace and harmony. “To achieve this feat, we would want to see Yoruba people go to work every day, including Sundays and Fridays. It is a primitive idea to be fighting on Fridays being declared a work free-day.” It said that Friday, as a working day, was not imposed on Nigerians by any Christian group, but by the British colonialists, who handed over power to a reactionary Muslim Fulani North. This, said the OMPC, left the country with a legacy of Arabic inscriptions on Nigerian currency. The OMPC added that a demand to make Friday a work-free day will lead to the loss of jobs and dwindling employment opportunities for the Muslim population. “If you ask Muslims not to work on Fridays, we can assure you that many private employers will not like to employ Muslims any longer even if this policy is restricted to the government employees. We also wish to know if we, as Muslims, will have to work on Christmas day and on Sundays. Will these elements also advocate for a change in the Western Calendar which is used in Nigeria? This is an irresponsible demand, a clear attempt to set the Yoruba nation and Nigeria on the cause of violence and disorder. We call on Yoruba people, especially youths to watch out for paranoid scholars who are using the name of religion for financial gains from some foreign countries at the expense of the poor Muslim population who desire happiness, justice, food and security. The group described the Sultan as a usurper. “The Sultan cannot be the head of Yoruba Muslims. He is a usurper. He came to Nigeria in 1804 through violence, killings, looting and cold-blooded brigandage. How can the offspring of such a movement be the head of Nigerian Muslims? There was no record of the position of the Sultan until 300 years after Islam had been established in Yorubaland as a religion of peace. Even the Sultan did not introduce Islam to the North. There was a Muslim ruler, Umme-Jilmi, who reigned between 1085 and 1097. He was converted to Islam by Sheik Mohammed Ibn Mani. In Hausaland, Islam was introduced by Wangarawa merchants. In Yorubaland, Islam came on before Mansa Musa of Mali (d.1337C.E). Islam was a strong religion in Yorubaland from the time of Alaafin Ajiboyede (1560 to 1570 C.E). So how did Sultan become the head of Nigerian Muslims including Yoruba? Who made him the head? Where was the meeting held where he was chosen? The idea of promoting the Sultan over several Yoruba Islamic scholars is a myth and a continuation of the political domination of Nigeria by the Fulani oligarchy. This is unacceptable to the Yoruba people,” said the statement. The statement also warned Muslims to be wary of scholars, who receive foreign grants, including from the Islamic Movement of Egypt. He accused them of making demands on behalf of Nigerian Muslims solely to justify their receipt of such on the pages of newspapers

Alcatraz005:This is very true. You see, in most other multi-cultural countries the political conversation is centered on legality and rights of access. The ownership of tangible power is the bottomline for setting discriminative agendas, and thus denying rights of access. In Nigeria, political victory is won through historical markers. When you know how your opponent responded in past challenges you are able to decode strengths and weaknesses you can use to pull their strings. Our biases and prejudices always take us back to the 50s and the 60s, the genesis of our problems as a competing nationalities cohabitating in the Nigerian sovereingty. The ethnic competitions are nothing but a race for self survival. This ship must have one captain....or no captain at all! The aspiration to captain Nigeria goes beyond the ethos of selfless public administration, it is structured moreso for selfish ethnocentric gains. Therefore the ruler is viewed narrowly as "our son" (the taker), rather than in a broader benevolent perspective as "our gift" (the giver). The competition to have and keep "our son" at the head then incites all manners of basic instincts at the lower level of our humanity that compels us to deny access to others, to discriminate against them and to eliminate them. This is what Nigeria is. It is unfortunate Ibo politicians do not make use of historical markers enough to understand political plots and intrigues. In matters of power, fear is the first human emotion that must be exploited. The unknown factor is a limitation on the psyche. To limit man you must give him something to fear. Violence, pain and sustained suffering limits man greatly. They can be physical, emotional or both....the objective is to humiliate and subordinate your opponent and therefore kill his ambition to captain the ship, which means all the priviledges and rights of access belonging to the captain now goes to you alone. Time after time, North has used "fear tactic" to suppress others and subordinate them. This is why after realising the advantage of military rule in 1966, they will always prefer military rule to civilian rule. This explains why Shagari was ousted in 1984, and why the idea resurfaced again recently during Buhari's absence and the thought that North will loose Presidency to South again. The violence of military regimes is useful in imposing the Nothern will on the political landscape. Between 1966 and 1979, and between 1985 and 1999, North used the military to ra.pe and exploit other regions and nationalities. Since 1999 their exploits had increasingly dwindled and their political relevance pushed to the back burner. They could not install the army to invoke fear....therefore they supplied arms to bokoharam and fulani herdsmen and unleashed them on the public. Bokoharam backfired on them. Fulani herdsmen is thus funded as a parallel army to visit fear and violence, one-city-at-a-time, village-after-village, on those in competition with sharia North. Bokoharam has big enough arsenal and command infrustructure that it faced and dominated the national army. Fulani are trained, and if need be with back support, to face and destroy the police. True enough there were reported incidences of face off in which police officers either surrendered to fulani or fled. National Security resources are deployed in their defense when caught in a snag. So, it is very crucial that Ibo leadership understand historical perspectives and study strengths and weaknesses to exploit. Laws, constitutional rights, fundamental human rights....these are not recognizable tenets for engaging and dominating a political conversation in Nigeria. Their lack of understanding is revealed in the response to IPOB, Biafra and Operation Python dance. Ipob was an advantage to SE but a threat to North. The elites up there recognized this but concealed their fear behind Arewa Youth acting as mouthpiece. Realizing their error, they tried damage control, which failed. Then they sprang into action and sent machineries of fear into Abia. When demanded to ban IPOB and declare Biafra illegal, their reflection should have been on the history of the agitation. The grievances were primarily on marginalization and discrimination. So, after taking Kanu out, has the marginalization, discrimination and bias of Iboman stopped? No! So there is a tangible power there that SE leaders could have used to negotiate access rights and priviledges back to political relevance at the center. Instead, without any counter-demands and guarantees for development of SE and inclusion in appointments made by the Administration , which was causal to the agitation, they capitulated; they demonized Ipob and Kanu and implicitly agreed to subordination by the Northerners. |
Mynd44:Kanu was in his house when the soldiers arrived and sorrounded the compound. The purpose of sorrounding is to control entry and exit of the area. He alongside Somto were trapped in. Somto released a documentary video of the siege. It is noticeable that he recorded the event from different angles and sides of the building and sounds of flying bullets can be heard all around the house. Im unsure if Somto said Kanu was in the house at time of the invasion or not. If he was, then he was taken away with them when the army left. |
benuejosh:IPOB stands on a legal and legitimate cause, which is demand for Biafran sovereingty and self-rule. There is nothing illegal about their demand. Much as I hate anything with Ibo, I also detest anything with fulani. Nonetheless, neither of them is totally useless and a waste. The issue of IPOB in particular is a wakeup call but moreso the response and reactions to it from North is despicable. Is North the only people threatened by IPOB? Is North the only region in Nigeria that loves this country? Where else in this country, beside North, and outside the period of civil war, has Ibo been massacred in this country? This militarized response to IPOB is barbaric, however, most people rejoice at it because Ibo people generally have acted towards others in malignant and pernicious manners. Fulani killings are not local by the way. I pity the Southerners who vote likes for comments from you and Sarrki. You fulani sympathisers conceal your identity using Middle belt and Southern profiles to propagate your agenda of divide and eliminate. You chant omoluabi and Eko oni baje freely to the unguarded and Yoruba simpleton who falls victim to your scam. If fulani killings were local why did FG raised a protective force (with high powered weapons) to shield them from thefts? Should that not be the job of individual states or local govts? The Ipob lesson is not an instruction for fulani treatment going forward since fulani herdsmen is defined internationally as a terror group. Bokoharam is similarly a terror group, therefore fulani herdsmen deserve bokoharam treatment. There are two elements that continue to work against Ibo. 1. His continued rebellion and assault against Yoruba 2. His aggravated assault against itself. These two make it divinely impossible for him to advance politically. Fulani toys with him too much. If he were to correct one or both of these fulani will no longer able to play him like yo-yo. |

Everytime talk of state of origin is in news, check what region of Nigeria the person is from. That alone says it all. Those who are satisfied with their ancestry and ethnic homeland never care to change their state of origin, whatever it is, they are content...but check those who are troubled and ashamed of their ancestry as they bother rest of this nation about a desire to acquire new origin. In other words, the land he was born in, Iboland, were subjects and tributaries of Bini. So if his own father was a member of Bini council of chiefs and elders then who is his father? Could an Iboman be a member of Bini Chiefs? What is Embrence? This is another anglocize corruption of a native term. Does it have collocate in any of the territories in and around Iboland? The marriage rituals he described are unique. Which culture practice this ritual? This kingdom is divided into many provinces or districts: in one of the most remote and fertile of which, called Eboe, I was born, in the year 1745, in a charming fruitful vale, named Essaka. The distance of this province from the capital of Benin and the sea coast must be very considerable; for I had never heard of white men or Europeans, nor of the sea: and our subjection to the king of Benin was little more than nominal; for every transaction of the government, as far as my slender observation extended, was conducted by the chiefs or elders of the place. The manners and government of a people who have little commerce with other countries are generally very simple; and the history of what passes in one family or village may serve as a specimen of a nation. My father was one of those elders or chiefs I have spoken of, and was styled Embrenche; a term, as I remember, importing the highest distinction, and signifying in our language a _mark_ of grandeur. This mark is conferred on the person entitled to it, by cutting the skin across at the top of the forehead, and drawing it down to the eye-brows; and while it is in this situation applying a warm hand, and rubbing it until it shrinks up into a thick _weal_ across the lower part of the forehead. The men, however, do not preserve the same constancy to their wives, which they expect from them; for they indulge in a plurality, though seldom in more than two. [b]Their mode of marriage is thus:--both parties are usually betrothed when young by their parents, (though I have known the males to betroth themselves). Following new revelations about cultural identity and root and their political ramifications for ethno-centric interests and patriotism I learnt that language is assimilative and is a variable whereas origin is fixed and unchangeable. Proper example is Hausa speaking areas of Northern Nigeria. The population speak Hausa but many are by origin non-Hausa. Another prime example is Ibo of South East Nigeria. There are bordering cultures who speak Ibo as a language but by origin are non-Ibo. Places like Ikwerre, Ika, Etche, Aboh. Most of what we know today as Ibo culture are in fact antiquities of culture and society inherited fron the ancient Igala society and culture. The prime status of an Ibo man is symbolized by his red cap. This red cap was borrowed from the Igala culture. The red cap chieftaincy of Igala is synonymous with the red robe royalty of the Ogisos of Benin. Its root is culturally in the Idu cult of the earth deity. Hence the name similarity between Edo and Idoma. Both came from Iduma - the red deity! We know how Ibos lived in the aftermath of European explorers who chronicled, both in writing and pictures, the lifestyle of Ibos. These records placed strong emphasis and clearly enumerated the Wawa, the Ngwa, as core Ibo race. In the political and missionary interest, both for administrative and religious control, the speakers of Ibo language, Ibos and non-Ibos, were lumped together and called Ibo-speaking areas. They were not called Ibo people...but rather, Ibo-speaking peoples. Let's take more examples. In Yorubaland there are Aworis, Egbas, Owus, Ijebus, Ekitis, Oyos, Ijeshas, Ketus, Itsekiris, Oros, Ilajes, Ikales, Ebiras, Offas, Ilorins, Okins, Binis, and so on... All without exception face Ife and recognise its sacredness as the homeland, the uproot and seat of the progenity of the different nations of dialects in Yoruba Commonwealth. To those who have different opinion or disagree history serves as reference. The Yoruba can therefore stand on merit as a Nation of same language and origin. In Hausaland, the Fulani claim a different root from Hausa; the Kanuri claim a different founding from both Hausa and Fulani, the Birom ancestry is different from Hausa or Fulani or Kanuri; the Kamberi is a different stock, so is Jukun, Tiv, Angas, Yauri, Gwari, and so on...but they all dress culturally same way and have a common official language. The North, like South East, should properly be called an Hausa-speaking area or Hausa-speaking peoples.....since only language is common, root and ancestry is not. The way the Ibos live pre-written records will forever remain a great mystery. However in the illustrative accounts given by the acclaimed Ibo man, Olaudah Equiano, one who is well intimate with the cultures and topography of the landscape he described and the lifestyle of the peoples begins to wonder if indeed Olaudah was an Iboman.....or an Ibo-speaking person of non-Ibo origin. This is my quest in this Myth Buster. |

Among the Igbo, one of Nigeria’s largest ethnic groups, there is widespread identification with Jews, and many see themselves as descendants of the biblical Israelites. But a recent test to determine if a group of Igbo men share genetic material with Jews is back — and no connection was found. Even before the results were known, the test was the source of heated debate among the Igbo. Now activists are decrying the enterprise, and the missionary American group that carried it out, as illegitimate. “Our purpose for providing this DNA testing…was to assist them in their pursuit of truth concerning their historical lineage and identity,” Jonathan Bernis, head of Jewish Voice Ministries International, wrote in an email to the Forward. The DNA test results “did not support their claim to be descendants of the ancient people of Israel.” Jewish Voice Ministries International is a Messianic missionary organization that appeals to “lost tribes of Israel” and people with Jewish heritage around the world to spread the message of “Messianic Judaism and the Jewish roots” of Christianity. In March, the group carried out the test in collaboration with a local religious group called Redeemed Israel Community of Nigeria, gathering some 120 saliva samples of community members. The tests were carried out using kits from Family Tree DNA, a Texas-based company that sells genealogical analyses, including a focus on Jewish heritage. The genetic test had been the source of fierce debate among Igbo members, some of whom questioned Jewish Voice’s ability to successfully carry out such a test and whether such a test would serve or hurt their cause. “There is no DNA test for ‘Jewishness,’” Igbo lawyer and author Remy Ilona wrote in a lengthy Times of Israel blog post, which outlined his objections both to the group and what he sees as their faulty methods.
