CultureRe: The Ilorin Blot On Yoruba History And The Perfidy Of The British by MayorofLagos(m): 1:20am On Nov 24, 2017
RedboneSmith:
This is a question you should try to answer. Why? Why didn't they dislodge the Fulani from Ilorin? There were at least three attempts to do so that ended in failure. The Battle of Ogele, the Mugba Mugba War, the Kanla War. Why did those attempts fail? It isn't Bower's fault that they failed.

The Ibadan inflicted a heavy defeat on Ilorin at Osogbo in 1840. Why did they not pursue that victory by trying to carry the war to them in Ilorin? The same happened at the Jalumi War where they beat Ilorin forces. Again they didn't match on to Ilorin to engage them there. Why? It can't be the fault of the British.

I have tried to analyse why, and my opinion is: they knew the Ilorin cavalry was a formidable force at home on the open plains of Ilorin and they weren't prepared to engage them in pitched battle there. If you have an alternative theory present it. But don't tell me na Bower cause am. The Yoruba had over 60 years to deal with Ilorin before the British put an end to all Wars in Yorubaland. If the job couldn't be done in that time it wasn't because of the British.
(1) Before Afonja uprising what role did Ilorin play in history of Yorubaland?

It was the cosmopolitan urban center of Yoruba Culture. The gateway into Yoruba. It was under the ruling authority of Alaafin. It was at a confluence of trade routes into Ashanti, Kordofan, Mali, Yauri, Kano, Nupe....

Naturally, Alaafin placed in there a tax collector.....but because it also housed spies and agents of enemy kingdoms it called for a military outpost as well. The Aare Ona Kakanfo used to domicile in Oyo. The ambitious expeditions of Aare was one too many and on the edge....reason he was relocated to Ilorin.

Now, who were the people in Ilorin? Fulani was amongst the people It was predominantly Yoruba but others lived there as well....citizens of Baruba, Yauri, Tapa, Mali, Hausa and so on but Fulani was there as well. They were Islamic clerics and did not nurse the either of war against Oyo. Afonja was the one who warred against Oyo, he had warriors but not enough number to overrun Oyo...this is where Alimi came in.

(2) The Ilorin warriors were led by Yorubas. They were trained the art of war strategies under the Eso but it just happened they were staged in Ilorin, and not in Oyo itself.

(3) Specific to your referenced period, Ibadan was fighting wars with many different nations simultaneously. The army was stretched and the strategy was defense of Ibadan, not occupation of another land. So what gains were there for them in securing Ilorin? At that point in time, none!

(4) in Jalumi war, which you left out, Ibadan succeeded in pushing Ilorin out completely and back to Ilorin. In hindsight they should have chased after them and complete their retreat out of Ilorin and to the other side of Niger, but that was not expedient at the time tue to their many campaigns against others.

(5) Let's be proud of Ibadan and give credit in recognition of their valour.
What stopped Ijesha, Ijebu, Egba, Offa and others from marching up to Ilorin to chase fulani out? Why does it have to be Ibadan fighting the enemy? Matter of fact while Ibadan was battling Ilorin, other Yoruba nations were battling Ibadan.

The loss of Ilorin is a shame on Yoruba generally, not just Ibadan.

(6) Ilorin never again dared Ibadan or any Yoruba town after Jalumi. In the aftermath and after Afonja had been killed, they created a political class to rule over them and the title was Oba of Ilorin.

(7) The rule by proxy introduced by British did not respect history or ethnic, they pretty much were interested in heirarchy order and how to class that heirarchy for effective control and indirect rule of the grassroot. The heirarchy in Ilorin wore a turban, not a crown as Yoruba Obas do and so Ilorin was classed into turban wearing heirarchies.

Similar thing happened in Epe. They needed to classify the ruler of the town and this led into dispute with Akarigbe of Remo. The British called Ooni to give judgement.

If Yoruba had raised objection about the turban wearing Oba of Ilorin being grouoed with other turban wearing kings Ilorin title might have remained Oba. No one objected.

The Northern Emirate changed the title from Oba to Emir.

Ilorin, as at 1966, was the capital of North Western State. The Yorubas still had a chance to recover it and bring it back politically into a full Western State. The different political ambitions and complete raype of the country by successive military administration chipped away at references of Ilorin to West or Yoruba.

(cool Over the years attempts have been made to reverse the loss of Ilorin. The problem of regaining it lie within Yoruba itself.

Governor Mohammed Alabi Lawal, former Governor of Kwara State was an opponent of the Emir of Ilorin. Yoruba knew this yet made no political moves to support and sustain the efforts of the Governor.

In Moro Local Govt of Kwara State, where the town of Jebba is, there is an Oba. The Northerners do not want any Oba in Kwara and particularly that Adebara claims that as the longest reigning dynasty in Kwara, he is independent and should not be chaired by the Emir. Emir of Ilorin however wants to subdue the Oba crown under his domain and ultimately erase it. Jebba is North of Ilorin. Oba Adebara has been fighting this battle alone. What is Yoruba doing in support of Oba Adebara against to Sulu Gambari and the North?

Few years ago OPC invaded Ilorin with the single action to raid the palace, depose the King and install an Oba. Along the route heading to Kwara their movement in such large number and convoy was suspected and the Police command in Ilorin was notified. When they got to border to Kwara they met tanks and battle ready army and police, they were denied entry into Kwara. No confrontation, they turned back.

Early this year we got news that the Jebba bridge had collapsed. The link between North and South on the Western flank is that bridge crossing. All the traffic that passes through that bridge is a boost to economy of Jebba. The town is a resting spot for travellers. Without the bridge the economy will collapse. Travellers have been forced to reroute away from Jebba since the bridge went down. Did the bridge collapse, or was that an act of sabotage by pro Emir elements to destroy the economy of Jebba and shame the Oba?

Now, we cannot count on Senate President Saraki, being a Senator from Kwara to see the economic impact to the different layers of production in the Supply and Distribution chain that use this bridge or the suffering their absence would bring on the community, because Olusola Saraki was one of those that plotted the downfall and ultimately the death of Governor Lawal. In fact Bukola Saraki was Governor and it is still believed in Ilorin till today that he and his fatjer had a hand in Governor Lawal's death. Saraki is an avid pro Emir, they are trying to destroy Jebba and erase its Yoruba link.

The VP is Yoruba, Minister of Works is Yoruba....what actions are they taking to see to it that a new bridge is constructed and the economic lifeline of Jebba returns? That would be a victory for Oba Adedara to lift up his head and remain poised against Emir and his agents of hate.

This Ilorin issue is a collective Yoruba challenge, not just Ibadan. Ibadan has done its part.

There is a measure of error in radiocarbon-dating, which archaeologists try to account for with the +- X years.

But dates obtained from oral genealogy are infinitely more flawed than radiocarbon-dating. And the longer the time-period between the event and the oral retelling the greater the risk of error.

Any scholar presented with different dates for an ancient event --- one obtained from oral genealogy and the other obtained from dated archaeological sites will definitely pick the radiocarbon-dating as being more accurate.
If i say this to you...

....in the year of the locust attack, on first day of the second moon of the year, when Arewa disapeared from the night sky, the Alaafin was visited by a foreigner whose sojourn would later turn the history of Oyo around for ever....

Are you able to tell me the year, the month, the day and what Arewa is?

More than likely not. You see, this is how the ancients kept record of time and events and passed it on. In our modernity we have lost that knowledge and because naturally the African is a spiritualist, our abilities in empirical science is dulled, and no one has taken time to study and recognize that oral history is accurate in dates....we are just lazy and wont make effort to translate their dating method to synch with our roman calendar.

Not that i know the event and can match the date myself, but the point in my scenario is that this is how oral records are kept and we should not blame our ancestors or discredit them....we should blame ourselves for not making effort to merge our oral past with our modern realities. We are the couplers...and weve done really bad job of integration. In fact we have not integrated, we simply replaced.
PoliticsTo Afenifere Leadership, What Is Your Point? by MayorofLagos(op): 6:03pm On Nov 23, 2017
I heard that in few days ahead Afenifere is having a fraternal meeting with Ohanaeze to relive the Ironsi/Fajuyi assassination in July66 as an anchor for partnership between Yoruba and Ibo.

What is the point?

If Afenifere is looking for ways to dislodge APC from power they dont need to use Fajuyi's sacrifice in vain and a pretense of finding common ground with Ibo. Neither is it honorable to drag his memory in the mud to establish a pro-Ibo and an anti-North stance.

Here is a list of Yorubas assassinated in Jan66. They were killed by the people Ohanaeze represent, the Ibos.

CIVILIANS
1. Premier of Western Nigeria, Samuel Akintola.
2. Mrs Lateefat Ademulegun (pregnant)

MILITARY
1. Brig. Samuel Ademulegun
2. Col. Ralph Sodeinde
3. Serg. Daramola Oyegoke

In addition,
Col. Victor Banjo was executed by Ojukwu.

Yoruba lost six precious lives and a baby to Ibo carnage.

Afenifere, can you as well use their names as pointers for finding common ground with Ibo in the way you are disrespecting Fajuyi name and dragging Yoruba pride in the mud?

Let's see how much love and kisses you get in public for such a dare. If you cannot do it for Jan66, why for July66? What is your point?

Thank you.

Radiocarbon dating itself is not conclusive and final on excavated archives.

There is an element of assumption in radiocarbon methods. It is a protocol adopted for advancing theories....pending discovery of a more definite physical evidence to yield facts.

Please let us be mindful and not supersede valid oral history with assumed calculations.
CultureRe: The Ilorin Blot On Yoruba History And The Perfidy Of The British by MayorofLagos(m): 4:08pm On Nov 23, 2017
RedboneSmith:
We are not discussing Old Oyo here, which everyone knows had a cavalry. We are discussing the 19th century martial state of Ibadan and its chances against Ilorin, given mid-to-late 19th century realities.
Discuss it in full dimension if you must do so. Yoruba were already using guns to wage war in the years you mentioned. Yorubas were in the middle of Kiriji war when colonialists got hinterland of Yorubaland. One of the principal warriors was Ogedengbe and many of his pictures showed him with a musket.

When British Navy attacked Lagos they were badly defeated twice. Yorubas used muskets and canons to defend Lagos and it was only on third attempt the foreign navy succeeded in victory, and that battle was hard-won, took over 24hrs.

Yoruba had posessed guns through trade with Portuguese and Dutch. Iyalode of Egbaland was one of the frontline arms trader.

If according to your storyline Britain was involved in mediating a war in the hinterland of Yorubaland, then it had to be after 1865....the bombardment of Lagos i described above occurred in 1850.

If we could fight off British sailors in boats and over waters in 1850, what stopped us from decimating Fulani horseriders galloping in open view across the plains....or into dangerous terrains of the forest where tree canopies can aid our concealment and assist ambush with the lethal fire power of guns?

Please reconstruct your story. I repeat, Fulani has no power of victory over Yorubaland, they owe gratitude to Afonja and his armies for their Emirate in Ilorin.
CultureRe: Alafin's Supernatural Power Over Other Oba's In Yorubaland by MayorofLagos(m): 3:36pm On Nov 23, 2017
Cyojunior:
BEFORE YORUBA HISTORY IS DISTORTED
All human beings are equal before God; the Almighty. He is
our Sustainer. The Creator of the worlds. However, God in
His infinite wisdom has created man and placed some
above others. It is a providential design to achieve universal
order, harmony and peace. He has placed the kings over
their subjects to ensure coordination. I love history, and I
loathe history being distorted. I am neither an ethnic
chauvinist nor jingoist. But I have special affinity for history.
It is worrisome when people concoct genres of myth in the
face of impeccable facts. I wish to delve a bit into in the
history of Obaship in Yorubaland ,with a special focus on
His Imperial Majesty, The Alaafin of Oyo and His Royal
Highness, The Ooni of Ile-Ife.
History has been so kind and friendly to the Alaafin that he
does not need to get into any battle for supremacy with any
Oba, either in Yorubaland or anywhere in the universe. No
other Oba had combined humility with royalty to meet the
demands of modernity like the incumbent Alaafin of Oyo,
His Imperial Majesty, Kabiyesi Iku Baba Yeye,Oba Lamidi
Olayiwola Adeyemi III .
According to impregnable sources of Yoruba history,
Oduduwa is the ancestor of the Yorubas. Oduduwa gave
birth to a son, Okanbi. Okanbi gave birth to seven male
children (Oranmiyan, Olowu, Alaketu, Onisabe, Orangun,
Olupopo, Oba Benin). Nowhere in history is Ooni
mentioned as one of the Yoruba Royal Families. The Ooni is
no blood relation of the seven sons of Okanbi. Historically,
Ooni has no traditional or political authority in the Yoruba
hierarchy. Riches and political fame of the Ooni from
1954_when Ooni Adesoji Aderemi was made the Governor
of Western Region by the Awolowo Administration cannot
undo the pristine history or invalidate the truth about the
Yoruba race.
History has acquainted us with copious facts that Ooni is
known to have been appointed by the Alaafin as the
custodian and keeper of the rituals and oratory of the gods
in Ile-Ife. The stool of Ooni was never known to be big on
hereditary kingship. Oonis have been the descendants of
Adimu the Olorisa, instead of being the direct descendants
of Oduduwa. The Alaafins of Oyo have been the paramount
kings and rulers of the Yorubas. Alaafin, in recognition of
his leadership, had intervened in numerous boundary
disputes involving the territories of the Ooni and Owa
Obokun of Ijeshaland
Some years back, when Oba of Benin visited Ile-Ife, the
comments made by Ooni Sijuade (I am happy to welcome
back my son and brother to the land of our ancestor,
Oduduwa) was quickly refuted by the Oba , through his
response:"who is the son of who?"
Moreover, The British as it was in their tradition recognized
lineage as meaning supremacy and legitimacy, preferring to
sign the Treaty of Cessation with the Alaafin as the Head of
the Yoruba Nation.
Also, on August 8th,1960, when Sir Adesoji Aderemi held
sway as the Ooni of Ife, Alaafin Bello Gbadegesin Ladigbolu
II was appointed the Chairman of the Council of Obas for
two years, Oba Adesoji never batted an eyelid. In 1962,
when Ooni had ceased to be Governor, he reverted to his
traditional stool and was attending the meetings of Obas
which had The Alaafin as the Chairman. When the first term
of Alaafin Gbadegesin expired, he was reappointed for
another two-year term. The Alaafin was reappointed for the
third time in 1965 until the military struck.
In 1966, Lt Colonel Adeyinka Adebayo made the Ooni
Chairman and the Alaafin his Deputy. Only the
Alaafin, among other Obas, protested the awkward
appointment and sought redress, as Alaafin does not play a
second fiddle to any Oba in Yorubaland. In 1976, the
military government had to reinstate the Alaafin as the
Chairman of the Council.
It is also a distortion to address the Ooni as "His Imperial
Majesty". This is another gaffe! Only the Alaafin is
addressed as His/Your Imperial Majesty. You cannot
assume the title when you have no empire you rule over.
Alaafin ruled over a vast empire (From Ilorin to Dahomey
and to some parts of Ghana; Ashanti) while Ooni did not
have that royal privilege. The Ooni is better addressed as
His/Your Royal Highness. This is history,my people!
The preeminence and supremacy of the Alaafin is obvious
from the above assertions and as deeply espoused in many
Yoruba books of history. We should not distort the history
by pitching the Alaafin against the Ooni. Oba Adeyeye
Ogunwusi made an unequivocal statement on his
coronation day that he was not into any supremacy contest
with the Alaafin.
Therefore, Alaafin remains the undisputed
leader of all Yoruba monarchs.
So if Ooni already said this in bold, then why are you wasting your time with an unproductive essay on who is supreme between the two?

I did not "adduce" Ilorin with "such glory". You people on this site are too emotional. What I said about Ilorin is what every student of history knows, i.e., Ilorin had the stronger cavalry and was the superior when it comes to fighting in the open plains; the Ibadan army was largely infantry and was superior when it comes to fighting in wooden country. Shikenan. I gave both states their due --- I wasn't "adducing" undue glory to either of them. Stop being unduly emotional.
That is not accurate. Ibadan itself was a relocation into the forest, from an earlier geographical settlement in the open plains in higher latitude than Ilorin. Oyo Ile was geographically North of Ilorin, and they kept cavalry in Oyo Ile. There are no fulani fighting on the Yoruba side but there were Yoruba warriors on the Ilorin side. This is why we remind that it was not a jihadi that took Ilorin....rather it was act of rebellion by the Yorubas in outposts.

Fulani would not have had a chance were there no Yoruba warriors pushing the front south into the territories.

I noticed that the yorubas claim ownership of the agbada attire, but there are over 200 ethnic groups in this country.

I see the hausa, Nupe, igbira, igala, idoma, tiv, jukum etc use the agbada as their traditional attire also.

So I ask again, why do the yorubas believe they own the agbada attire?
Agbada is a wear across the savannah. All peoples of Savannah wear agbada, they wear kaftan and they wear buba. Yoruba is a member of Savannah Belt.

Above Savannah you have Sahel Belt. In the Sahel they also wear agbada but in addition, they wear turban to insulate the head and face against the scorching heat of the Sun.

Below Savannah you have Guinea or Coastal belt. People of the coast tie loin clothes.

So agbada is worn in both Sahel, where Hausa is, and Savannah, where Yoruba is.

During investigation and Senate hearing of Stealer Oduah on bulletproof BMW, Maduka was found to have colluded with Ngozi Iweala using import waivers to defraud government. Each state of the federation have a number of import waivers allocated to them as privilege. Maduka colluded with Ngozi and used two waivers allocated to Lagos State, without the State authorization, to go around customs and bring in the two bulletproof vehicles.

Lets not forget that Stealer Oduah told Senate that the two BMWs were gifted to her by the Ministry of Aviation. If this was true, why is a Federal Agency using a waiver that belongs to State to import a vehicle laundered through a non-bid purchase from a private seller? Did Ministry Aviation get Lagos State approval to use its waiver?

Senator Misau made an allegation about the police IG dating & promoting a junior rank officer to a senior officer without naming the said police woman? secondly, the police IG has a limit to the rank he can promote to, cus in the case of those from the ASP to higher officers, that is primary the duty of the police service commission. Senator Misau should produce his evidence of shut his mouth if he has non.
Those who cannot differentiate truth from falsehood or law from ethics are often at a loss to raise point of defense when their own dignity is attacked with falsehood or their rights assaulted unjustifiably.

Misau does not need to present evidence. He has nothing to loose.
IGP has a lot to loose. If he is dishonorably discharged for this misstep, which indeed could happen, he looses his lifetime pension and cannot enter into any business or contractual deal with police for rest of his life. Therefore it is to IGPs best discretion to hire a lawyer and a PR and dispatch both to start talking for him. The Senate could invite Esther as well if they want to...and women talk too much sometime, you can bet she will spill the bean.

When a charge of this magnitude is raised to the point of going in front of National Legislature it is no longer a matter of simply law...all the points and functions of office must be attended to, including codes of ethics....which by the way is also a legal instrument for managing behavior and relationships in a professional institution where trust and integrity is highly desired and of utmost importance.

One of the grievances the public has against government is lack of integrity.

Lack of integrity means a breakdown of trust, perceived or real.

Abuse of office
Misuse of authority and power
Bias
Favoritism
And so on..

These and many more erode citizens trust for government.

An IGP that accelerates promotion for a girl so he could sleep with her has created tension and bias at work and lost trust (integrity).

He challenged the lawmaker representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Senator Isa Misau, who accused him of having an affair with a junior female colleague, to prove him otherwise.

Idris stated this in a written defence he presented through his lawyer, Dr. Alex Iziyon (SAN), to the Senate ad-hoc committee investigating the allegations against him by the senator.

SUNDAY PUNCH obtained a copy of the written defence, in which the allegations against the IG were listed in six categories and responded to.

He specifically asked the senator to cite a section of the law that prevents him from having romantic relationship with a policewoman.

The police boss recalled that Misau’s father married the lawmaker’s mother while in service.

On the allegation that Idris was having affairs with two female officers who also got questionable promotions as a result, Iziyon said, “This allegation is laughable and showed lack of understanding of the provisions of the Police Act and regulation.”

The Inspector-General of Police challenged the senator to cite the section of the Police Act and Regulation which forbids a police officer from marrying another police officer.

He said, “Until he brings such section of the Police Act, it will amount to discussing the Inspector-General of Police’s private life, which ordinarily should not have been entertained on the floor of the Senate.

“It might be appropriate to remind the senator, whose mother retired from the police as an Inspector of Police and a father who retired from the police as an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, that the Inspector-General of Police is a Moslem and, according to Islamic Law, can marry four wives provided he can love them equally.

“The senator also alleged that the Inspector-General of Police is in a relationship with one Corporal Amina whom he claimed was promoted from the rank of Corporal to an Assistant Superintendent of Police within 12 months.

“This allegation is false and the senator is under obligation to give the full particulars of the female police (officer), where she is serving and her duty post. It is not possible to promote a corporal to the rank of an ASP except the officer has attended an in-service cadet course.”

The IG, who earlier declined the committee’s invitation due to pending court cases over the matter, appeared before the Senate panel on Wednesday, accompanied by Iziyon; and the Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang.
