It does not hunt for Yoruba blood so katz is safe. ...unless he brings that kiriji nonsense down here to rabble rouse Lagos.

When we are done with sports, i want to talk about terrorism, radicalisation and extremism in the SW.

Its no news that anywhere you find muslims in large numbers, the above is a worry ( i am muslim BTW).

I know Lagos State government has a firm grip on who becomes Imam in every mosque including private ones. I hope other SW states are coping this model, we already have a case of the knive holding BRITISH boy with a Yoruba name, we have also read about DSS operation against boko haram affiliate group in kogi (next door neighbor).

We don't want our kids getting radicalised, i hope DAWN or whoever is incharge is seriously taking this up.
Iyalode,
In backdrop to your concern, how would you categorize OPC in its early years?

I agree. We must not continue to commit same error over and over. No one denies Ogunde is father of cinema and theatrical play in Nigeria...but going by our record in theater and plays and cinema why is Yoruba not the decision maker in that industry? Many of our actors and actresses are complaining of marginalization. This means another group is the mainstream of Nollywood.

Right?

The irony of the point you make about physical sports is that there are more Yoruba sons in combat sports than any other group in Naija. I watch a lot of Boxing and UFC and the names I see these days are Yoruba.

Boxing
Anthony Olufemi Joshua - 2012 Olympic Heavyweight Gold medalist and current darling ofHeavyweight Boxing
Larry Ekundayo
Lateef Kayode - very funny chap
Segun Ajose

UFC
Jimi Manuwa
Oluwale Bamgbose

In terms of spread, Yoruba are into more sports although the dominance is only in Table Tennis. The issue I tend to have with Yoruba in sports is one of discipline. Sport requires discipline but current players aren't too disciplined hence the limited success.
Not to digress from the point under discussion but you recall in 2008/2009 some American banks and corporations were classified as "too big to fail" and given Govt protection against market forces.

Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey are also in the bracket of American institutions that will never be allowed to fail.

In Europe and South America Soccer is more than just being called a sport!

A food vendor alone with a concession contract to supply food and refreshments at a major soccer or baseball game will take home about $10,000...this about 6,000 pounds sterling.

We do not yet operate our sports on that scale. We did not have a cinema flavor that has appeal around the globe twenty years ago. Until very recently we did not have a music genre that plays on airwaves round the globe, until recently. No doubt, whatever we touch in Nigeria turns to gold!. European teams will continue to recruit our players, so there is a open channel...wide open for seeding and developing sports in Nigeria as a big money maker.

When that day comes, one of the many ethnic groups in Nigeria would wield the power and occupy decision making. Which group would it be?

Let me reference Segun Odegbami commenting not long ago that a lot of people who he believes were fans of Orji Uzor Kalu, his competition for post of FIFA President, would prefer a foreigner is given the position if Kalu did not get it.

Sports has, in a way, become instrument of political negotiation. We cannot afford not to be the decision makers for mega sports wealth in Nigeria

Looool Aunty mi trust me I know what I'm talking about.I was street you know cool so I'm speaking from experience grin

I disagree with the emboldened. All you just need to do is to find a football field around you.For every Chinedu, there's always an Ahmed and a Sola

The examples you cited is not just Yoruba parents alone, parents regardless of their ethnicity are usually skeptical about their children going into music or football

During trials, the money aspect is the most important, then ability, then tribe. In that order
I can't speak for the hinterland but in Lagos soccer was an institution. On Island, from Campos to Onola, Berger, Ebute Alagbafo, they had seasonal tournaments with trophy. Some of these guys ended in clubs like Nepa, First Bank, Customs and so on. My father kept newspaper clippings. At these same fields they had high jump and pole vault competitions. Beside these they had recreation centers in Oko Awo and Oke Arin. Weightlifting was in there, gymnastics with the horses, the suspended rings, they had boxing training...all kind of indoor sports. There was Biney sports center in Yaba for bsketball and swimming, as well as another located close by national stadium. So i know about the potentials and missed opportunities.

In my opening to this discussion series i started by saying "opportunity cost".

Whats the vision, what are we in sports?

CabbieAC,

I don't agree with you about the Tribalism argument for why we don't do well in football...

We don't even make the effort, we are bookish, parents don't encourage extra curricular activities as a tribe...

I read something about how OJB Jezreel had to lead a delegation to beg Wizkid's parents to allow him explore his musical talent...

Olamide said he was on the streets for 6yrs & used to sleep on the floor of ID Cabasa 's studio cos his parents were not prepared to hear anything that isn't about his studies...

I have a cousin who could play well (subjective) as a teen but he never took it further cos he knew his parents weren't bout that life, Life hasn't been especially harsh to him but he never ceases to talk about what could have been if he had had the "liver" to pursue his dreams.

Till date,he still plays set with his neighbourhood friends...

So Aare, you can't complain about not being lifted when you didn't even raise ya hands..
Hhmmmm, true talk. ...there are many children whose divine destiny was stalled or completely weakened because of parents insistence to shape their kids path.

Obsession with titles - iya lawyer, iya doctor.

Now you agree with Iyalode that the idle among us just drift to agberoism! Dunno if it was you or Tupac who mentioned that the average guy at Mushin Olosha is a natural boxer, why aren't these guys representing us? . We can't all be thinkers and strategists, we are leaving behind those who aren't is the point.

I am guessing that it is getting better now but you can't disagree that your average middle-class Yoruba parent almost always give up on wards who show slower aptitude in academics and when they don't give up, the child will drift from one course to another wasting valuable time and energy just because mummy and daddy desire so. What would it take for the same parent to nurture a sporting talent if present ?
Im not addressing a talent in sports, thats a given! Im talking about the elevation of sports globally as an income generator for all participators.

We must keep a noble pace and continue to better our status.

Our parents and their parents did not instruct us to be court clerks or health records clerk, not the draughtsman, not the ledger keeper, not foreman. Their marching order was ...lawyer, doctor, architect, accountant, engineer! It's our turn and the big money maker ahead of us is sports....we must push for decision making!

This kind of mindset is exactly why we lag. Aside from Yekinni, Mutiu Adepoju, Segun Odegbami and thunder Balogun who else can you mention. Rashidi Yekinni's team was made of Okocha, Eguavoen, Amokachi, Amunike, Rufai, Finidi all of whom were stars in their own rights. One person does really well and that is enough reason not to develop further or try to do better undecided
Why do we dominate the professions - law, accounting, engineering, architecture, and so on?

Because it was groomed into us as the only path to success. If sports was groomed into us as vigorously as we were constantly reminded of becoming a successful doctor, lawyer, accountant....we would today dominate the field....whether or not our constitution is a fit. We thrive well as the "thinkers" and "strategists" than we would as the "toiler".

The gist is this...if we must pound our future generations into sports we should groom and remind them to be "team owners", "team coaches"....

This does not exclude us from having Yoruba players in the field....but we will, through the vision rule and dominate professional sports in Nigeria, and control theleagues and all the value propositions from stadium contracts to concession stands.

You feel me darling? wink

Raumdeuter we want to discuss why the Yorubas in Nigeria are not doing well in sports compared to the Yorubas in the diaspora

Shymm3x is still digging up the files
You should look at the opportunity cost. A young man abroad, Yoruba or not has a fast track to fame and status through sports than he has being a contractor or a politician.

In Western societies, services have replaced hand production and artisanship, there are more offices than there are factories. There are more plastic and disposable cutleries in circulation than there are silverwares and stainless heirlooms. If you live in US or England, when was las time you saw a china set?

Commodity trading and prospecting is gradually being displaced by sports betting and forecasts. The risk is low, you can place bets in multitude of arrays and even call for derivatives against your own odds....if you know the teams well the chance of loosing out on sport betting is low...its a win win! So big game sports and physical brags for championships and fanfare is a economy booster for communities and for individuals. Hence sportsmen in West are semi gods....and every boy want to be in the field to be worshipped.

For every one Kobe or Des there are one hundred competitors cut off in trials. We dont never hear about them. There are many that commit suicide because they cant face the rejection and ridicule in their community. Many turn to drug abuse. So, you get my gist....sports abroad pays well but along the path to the arena there are many victims, maimed, dead, ruined that are left forgotten and abandoned!

Amongst the many pressures we already place on little ones growing up....let's not add sports to their plate.

Sir Shymm3×, I think this is a very interesting topic and very very important but disturbing question. I have always asked this question whenever people say Yorubas don't excellece in sports than ......you know now, when i know it's not true. Why? We set football as the only benchmark for achievement in sports in Nigeria, whereas we have other sports where Yorubas are doing even better.

Nevertheless, We can't ignore or pretend Yoruba's are not doing well in football only in Nigeria. Why? I think we should start with football. Shalom
We need to be truthful to ourselves. What is sports to a Yorubaman? Where in our history have you read about domination in sports?

Lets put things in perspective....amongst the Negro race Yoruba is far advanced in practices demanding cerebral energy than physical energy. Our physiological makeup is tailored for thoughts, observation, reflection and innovation.

Ibos are excelling in sports because its in their history and they are physically endowed for it. We need to find our comparative advantage and dominate it....in fact monopolise it for its rewards!

Yoruba is world best in Table Tennis. We have consistently dominated Table Tennis in Nigeria and Africa because its a game of calculation and strategy. If Ayo was a international tournament we'd be top rated because it fits in with our makeup - calculation and strategy! Ive been playing snooker and billiards since I was 16, at one time it was my source of income....and I find it muvh more easier to coach a Yoruba person than any other ethnic group because of the ease with which they lock in.

Heroism in Yorubaland is perfected throuvh acts of shrewdness and decoy...hiding your play hands from the opponent! Think of the range of sports that need that skillset...physical sports do not make it.

Heroism in Iboland is recognized in acts of physical bouts - wrestling! The wrestling champion is the village hero. Hence they are built naturally for physical sports and require zero thought process or calculation to win.

Lets give them what belongs to them. Lets find ours and champion it!
