The National anthem meant more than just a recital; each word we sang we engraved in our hearts, to follow true when the baton is eventually passed because we believed we were going to lead tomorrow and wanted our future generations to also take pride in the sacrifices we were prepared to make. Years down the line, I wonder where all those promises went. I see how beautiful and easy things could be if only we towed the path we all should know is right. I fail to see the gains of excessive bickering battering going on everywhere. I fail to see how other people's life meant little to us even when their pain adds no value to us either. I fail to see how power suits only to serve the purpose of oppression to those who wield it. I fail to see how those beautiful shades of colours represented by varying cultures seem so gloom and barbaric from a distance. I fail to how reasonable adults wake up in the morning hungering for fights with people they don't even know. I fail to see how we all don't see the damage and startle ourselves awake from the nightmare that has become the lives of many and make this nation great as promised. And for these and more I weep, I weep and hope for a better nation I believe you and I can decide to build and once again take pride in. |
We wanted to be doctors so we could cure not to make money even at the expense of human lives. We wanted to be soldiers not to intimidate and maim but because we love our country and wish to protect it. We wanted to be teachers not because there were no jobs but because we loved to interact and groom others. We wanted to be farmers not because we were poor or to cheat others, but because we loved to watch the seeds sprout and boom. |
Nigeria was a great country and we were all proud of it. Within those classes, our future in it was insured and there were no need to build bridges because there were no divides. The leaders made sacrifices that brought tears and moulded the sense of patriotism in us. We knew exactly what we needed to be to make our Nation even greater. But having grown up, all these seem to be a mirage. Leadership has proven to be means of primitive accumulation of wealth without regard for human life. Ethnicity seem to be another name for a wild unending gulf restricting people from ever coexisting peacefully. All we were taught seem to be just a wishful thinking of those who taught us. We never saw it and we never work for it to come. |
I weep when I see all happening around here. I wail even more with the realization that this space mirrors a to a large extent, the stark reality of our Nation and I wail thinking of what it portends to our future, individually and collectively. Growing up, Social studies was my best subject. Little wonder 'Uncle Johnson' like we fondly called him was one of my favourite teachers at the Police Children School, Sokoto. (No, my Father wasn't a police officer) It was so because it was fun learning about other people's cultures. Living outside my place of origin, it also presented the opportunity of learning things I didn't learn from home about my own culture. We interacted effortlessly with people from other cultures and the differences in name meant nothing. Friendships were built without recourse to linguistic or ethnic differences, if sides were created, it was just for fun and never lasted beyond the period it was meant to serve. |
Daniel2802:And so? I can show you one that has been as far back as 2009. So shift |
The real problem is not being able to distinguish between discipline and abuse. When you punish a child either by enforcement or denial for a wrong done, it is discipline. When you punish a child either because you don't love them or in a disproportionate manner to their perceived wrongdoing, then it might be termed abuse. It is okay if you decide not to discipline your child, but be sure to establish boundaries that some of their attitudes are tolerable only in your homes, they should understand that they shouldn't try same outside the confines of the 'safe havens' you built for them as parents. |
Post covid wahala, but I guess this would affect just the upper middle class and upper class citizens. Only God knows what the outlook is like for the common man, but las las we go survive. |
ogunsbanjul:Will they speak when asked to or just faint? |
Investnow2017:Quite a sad reality |
Corruption has indeed eaten deep into the fabrics of our dear nation. How much more does one need to make before they can resist the temptation to steal? |

Why is this charade permitted to go on in Edo state? What's the fate of the constituents who were denied representation ? Alas, this country is on autopilot where anybody can determine the direction of governance without due recourse to constitutionality. |
One of the reasons I'm proud being African. Our problems are basically man-made and as such, easily surmountable (if only we want to) |
Kidgaya:What's your location? |
Romangalactic:I will not split bills with my sister or even brother for that matter |
Billionsclub:Maybe you should bring them to a particular home close to them and teach them together, of course after discussing with the home owners |
Mindlog:When you raise your kids right, they become better people for the society. |
I sha pray her phone wouldn't 'spoil' the next time she sees another guy that picks interest in her. |
Take her to a phone repair shop to get it fixed. There's nothing wrong with giving her a new phone, but it shouldn't be such that her response should be tied to the phone. Can you move on and forget the phone if she rejects your proposal if and when you gather the balls to tell her? Or you are the type that would either embarrass her into returning the phone or coming to say 'she rejected me even after I bought her a phone?' Let your sense direct you sha |
The hate speech bill has so far not been effective, especially considering the level of hate going on here. If it were, Nairaland would have been shutdown for permitting so much bitterness and rancour. |
You can only 'challenge Alfa' if he told you it was 4gb when selling it to you. Nonetheless, accost him in a non confrontational manner and he might upgrade it for you (for free if you're calm and he's nice or a little token of not more than 1k if he's considerate) Good luck |
thesicilian:Not all posts on social media deserves a response. I have stated my opinion and owe her no explanation neither have I begged her for upkeep. |
My Mother gave me this mark while i was being disciplined for stealing her money. She told me that that I'd grow to tell the story of how my behavior brought about this scar. Even though she turned around to treat me and might not have intended to leave me with a scar. I understood my crime and still understand no parent should have to deal with a child as me at that point in my life and I have come to understand without any form of resentment her love for me and the need to curb any future tendency of a criminal life. That might have not be seen as the best way to raise a child citing 'civilization' but I love my mum more for loving me enough to want to guide me through the right path. Most times when I see people bragging about how 'my parents never beats me' I pity rather than envy them and can't help but blame their parents for doing a very poor job raising them; especially when I juxtapose that mentality or the irrationality and terrible behaviour they intend for you to condone without as much as raising your voice on them. Those set of kids, in my opinion grow up to have the most sense of entitlement, susceptible to extreme depression, selfish in dealing with others etc. If I ever get to have children, they will have to experience the kind of love I'm proud to say I had growing up and that is tough love. I read it somewhere that: "You should discipline your child or have the law do it later in their lives"
