•Allege union inserted N87bn into 2009 agreement in February 2013 By Damilola Oyedele The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) have declared their opposition to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), describing the action as self-serving and hypocritical. Both bodies alleged that the N87 billion being demanded as earned allowances was not a part of the 2009 agreement, but was calculated and handed to the government to insert into the agreement in February 2013. The National President of NANS, Mr. Yinka Gbadebo, speaking at a press briefing in Abuja yesterday, also warned ASUU against taking alleged steps to divide the students' body. This, he said, in response to some protests by some students in support of the ongoing action which was now in its 102th day. The Chairman of the Needs Assessment Report Implementation Committee and Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswan, had already met with NANS and NYCN where he updated them on the efforts of the government at improving the infrastructure of the universities. The two bodies accused ASUU of deliberately frustrating efforts by the students and youth body to meet its leaders and discuss the union's grouses, saying that this suggested that the union has something to hide. Gbadebo, who spoke on behalf of two bodies, added that the causes being pursued by the union are not in the interest of Nigerians, as the union is propagating. He disclosed that NANS and NYCN had already obtained copies of the 2009 Agreement and were convinced that ASUU was being egocentric in its demands for its own gains and not in the interest of the Nigerian university system. "The N87billion being demanded by ASUU was not calculated and stated clearly as at the time the 2009 agreement was reached. The N87billion was generally calculated and presented to government to be inserted into the agreement by ASUU in February this year," he alleged. Gbadebo decried the concerns of ASUU as regards the Needs Assessment into Primary and Secondary demands. While NANS and NYCN backed ASUU's secondary demands, they doubted the sincerity of its primary demands. "The primary demands are the earned allowance totalling N87billion being demanded by ASUU for its members. ASUU is also demanding that all landed properties in public universities nationwide should be allocated to it by the government to be managed via a company called ASUU Holdings," he said. Gbadebo further said: "The secondary demands are those which encapsulate conducive environment for teaching and learning, total implementation of UNESCO recommendation on education, among others. A total of N400billion is being demanded by ASUU for these for 2013." The primary reasons, Gbadebo said have become the main reasons why ASUU had refused to call off the strike. "The N87billion being demanded by ASUU was not calculated and stated clearly as at the time the 2009 agreement was reached. The N87billion was generally calculated and presented to government to be inserted into the agreement by ASUU in February this year," he alleged. NANS and NYCN, however, appealed to ASUU to avoid politicising the strike, and call off the action in the interest of Nigerian students. They called for a National Education Stakeholders' Dialogue to come up with practical solutions to reverse the declining trend in the nation's education system. "We want to equally sound a clear note of warning to some ASUU members who are relentlessly trying to polarise our dear organisation, NANS through sponsorship of fallacious, slanderous and libelous publications by fictitious and to a great extent unauthorised persons in the name of NANS to desist from this act of shame, as any further sponsorship of such will be met with the full venom of the wrath of Nigerian students and youths," Gbadebo said. The persistent twin crisis in the country’s university system which has led to a three- month-long lecturers’ strike and the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), internal war of attrition under the watch of President Goodluck Jonathan ,puts serious doubt on the capacity of the administration to facilitate a national conference, General Secretary, Textile Workers’ Union and Vice President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Issa Aremu ,has said. Aremu said in Kaduna, on Sunday that as President Jonathan inaugurates Advisory Committee on the National Dialogue on Monday, again, the challenge among others, lies in the sincerity of purpose and the capacity of the administration to hold a meaningful dialogue on a national scale. According to him, two national issues that had added to the existing national security challenge in recent time were the ongoing Academiic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike and the internal crisis within PDP, adding that if the president and his men cannot resolve the university crisis given the existing country’s robust labour laws and rich collective bargaining and dialogue traditions, what trust can the nation put on the administration to handle a national conversation on more naughty issues of national development? “President Jonathan must come out with clean hands on simple conflict resolutions before he can be further entrusted with national conversation of such importance. Rival teachers unions, Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools of Nigeria and Basic Education Staff Union of Nigeria (BESUN) have raised opposing voices to strike notice called by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in support of the ongoing ASUU strike. Speaking with LEADERSHIP at the end of a joint celebration by the two unions to mark the 2013 world Teachers’ Day which held at the Nigeria Army Officers’ Mess in Lagos, the unions explained that much as they share and believe in the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) call for a better learning environment their members will not join NUT in the proposed solidarity strike. The two unions said their members will not be part of the proposed strike and ultimatum given by NUT because the decision was not a well thought out plan of action. BESUN’s National President, comrade Dorcas Aruge explained that it will not do any good to further bring the entire sector into a limbo adding that all the unions operate at their separate levels that is clearly defined. Showing empathy for ASUU, parents and students especially who have been at home in the last three months, she appealed to the Federal government to live up to the expectations of the university lecturers who are calling for a better learning environment. Speaking in the same vein, Lagos State President of ASUSS, Comrade Alabi Kazeem said the union will not call out its members to join in any solidarity strike with the striking university teachers, noting that NUT had failed to give convincing reasons to Nigerians for the strike. He said, “ASUSS will not call out its member to participate in any solidarity strike over the lingering ASUU crisis. It is not a well thought out decision. Before members of a union can be called out on strike they should be given convincing reasons for enlisting their support’. - See more at: http://leadership.ng/news/071013/asuss-besun-say-no-nut-s-solidarity-strike-ASUU#sthash.Jm1fNGaT.dpuf |

Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, had during the weekend, vowed to stop distributing petroleum products across the country if the ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, continues with no solution. It threatened to frustrate fuel distribution if the federal government remains adamant, without full implementation of the lecturers’ demands. NUPENG however did not specify when the strike will begin, but stated that it was necessary it shows solidarity with the lecturers since the government had failed to find a permanent solution to the strike that commenced 3 months ago. NUPENG President, Igwe Achese, while speaking at the Union’s National Administrative Council, NAC, meeting, in Lagos, expressed worry over the state of Nigerian universities. He said government’s failure to respect agreements had resulted to strikes in different sectors of the Nigerian system since the inception of 2013. He said, “We appeal to government to implement agreement reached with ASUU so that students can go back to school. If the crisis in the sector is not resolved, we will soon direct our members to embark on solidarity strike.” Blaming the Ministry of Labour over the ongoing saga, he said, “The Ministry of Labour needs to be proactive if we must get these issues nipped in the bud. The ministry also needs to make sure that agreements reached or communiqué signed are implemented. “The Ministry has a big role to play to avert strikes in the country. When unions begin to lose faith in the ministry that is when we have this kind of crisis. The Labour mMinister should be firm in making sure that the right decisions are taken. “As it is now, every activity in the Ministry of Labour is in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, which ought not to be so. The role of the SGF should be to intervene only when the need arises.” The ongoing strike is beginning to take a new dimension as different bodies, including the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, have threatened to show support for the action of the University lecturers.
