Family / Nigerian Woman Recreates Her Mother's Photo With Her Own Daughter by metroblogger: 9:08am On Jan 04, 2017
Yasmin's mother took this photo over two decades ago. So when Yasmin had her own daughter she decided to recreate the photo. The resemblance is striking! Below is a post by the photographer Udimee:

"Pictures are powerful. They freeze time, preserve memories and document history in ways that still intrigue me. *

Over two decades ago, Yasmin’s mom had this photo taken (the one on the left) and recently, after Yasmin welcomed a baby girl, she decided that she wanted to recreate that same photo. The curious thing though, is how close the resemblance is between the three people in the photo. Yasmin looks just like her mum in the older picture and her daughter looks exactly like the younger Yasmin. *

Interestingly, I have not seen Yasmin in one year. However, the last time we met for a photoshoot at her house, I made a photo of her with a little girl, a relative of hers who kept trying to get into our pictures. So we included her in one with Yasmin and recently, when I was looking for a picture for my story, A Northern Dream, I stumbled on that picture and shared it on Instagram. Someone told Yasmin about it and that is how we got reunited for this exciting project. She had been looking for a photographer for this for a while. Can you believe that? *

It is in moments like this that I often place a lot of value on the job that I do. Photographers have helped preserve powerful memories for posterity and that is a truly noble thing, I think. Who knows, someday, Little Armani might want to make the same image and I might just be fortunate to be the guy who makes that image as well. Here is to Photographers and Powerful Memories!"

Politics / Akwa Ibom Orders Release Of Reigners Church Building Architect by metroblogger: 6:17pm On Jan 03, 2017
The Commission of Inquiry on the Collapsed Reigners Church Building has ordered the release from detention Arc Anietie Augustine, the Architect that handled the building design of the Collapsed Church.

The Chairman of the Commission Justice Umoekoyo Essang (Rtd) in his ruling today ordered that Arc Anietie Augustine who has been in Police custody at the Headquarters of the Akwa Ibom State Command of the Nigerian Police Force be released.

The Commission Chairman said his release will give him the opportunity to provide documents needed by the Commission but insisted that he will be accompanied by police escort to his home to obtain required documents.

The Commission also granted the prayers of the Founder of the Collapsed Church, Apostle Akan Weeks to be given leave of not presenting his evidence today as scheduled until Friday 6th January 2017.

Earlier the Counsel to Apostle Akan Weeks, Barr Ini Ekpo had requested the Commission to avail his client with what he described as a short adjournment to enable him make his memorandum available to the Commission.

"This hearing has come a little too early and we are therefore not ready to give evidence today sir. This commission gave us notice to summit memorandum on or before 4th of January 2017. It is our strong desire that the Commission gives us a little time." He said.

The Counsel informed the Commission that why the memorandum from Apostle Weeks is not ready is because all the documents about the site is with the structure Architect, Arc Anietie Augustine who he reported is still in police custody.

He said for his client to have access to the documents and present same during hearing, it was imperative for the Commission to give order for his release even as all his efforts to secure his release has proved abortive.

Counsel to the Commission, Barr Friday Itim although argued that It is not realistic that an Architect will be in position of all documents of a building, he conceded that he should be granted bail.

On adjournment plea by Counsel to Akan Weeks, Barr Itim stated that since the counsel to Akan weeks has expressed the desire and readiness to present the memo within 48 hours from receiving the said documents, he thinks it is fair and in interest of justice that he be allowed to present his case before the Commission.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Commission, Barr Emem Daniel revealed that the Commission has received memoranda from the Nigeria Institute of Engineers, Institute of Builders, National Institute of Architects, Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, a Private Citizen, Brigadier Afangide, and the Ministry of Health.

Business / Chicken Consumers Flay Increased Processing Charges by metroblogger: 10:13am On Jan 01, 2017
Chicken consumers in Asaba on Sunday expressed displeasure over the hike in charges for processing the commodity by butchers.

A survey conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the Abraka Market revealed that the price for processing one chicken had gone up from N100 to N200.

Mrs Cynthia Uchenna, a resident, said that she used to pay N100 to have one bird processed but was now told to pay N200, adding that the 100 per cent increase was too much.

“Prices of all commodities have shot up because of recession. Will the President also be blamed for the hike in this ordinary service?,” she asked.

According to her, the butchers have no reason to increase the charges because the time and energy spent on processing one chicken has not increased.

Another consumer, Mrs Ejiro Ugbaja, also argued that there was no reason for the increase, noting that the butchers were just exploiting the consumers because of the festive period.

But a butcher, Mr Abdul Hamisu, said that the service charge was hiked because the season presented the best opportunity for them to make more money.

Hamisu explained that the rush for the commodity and the long queue gave rise to the price increase.

He said that consumers who kicked against the increase failed to realise that the amount of pressure mounted on them by the consumers had also doubled.

“How many of these women come to the market to buy chicken before this season?,” he asked.

However, another butcher, Mr Jelili Mafara, said that they decided to increase the charges because more people strayed into the business during festive periods.

According to him, because of the increase in number of butchers the number of chicken he processed in a day during the yuletide had dropped.

He said that he used to process up to 30 birds a day during festive periods in the past, but that the number had dropped to about 20.

Mafara also attributed the hike in the charges to the increase in price of firewood used in boiling the water for the processing.

“If you are not careful this time, you might end up regretting at the close of work,” he said. (NAN)

Phones / Telecos Negotiating Reversal Of Impending Data Price Increase With NCC by metroblogger: 1:08pm On Nov 29, 2016
Telecommunication firms in the country are negotiating a reversal of the impending increase in data price with the Nigeria Communications Commission, NCC.

It is expected that data prices for MTN, Glo, Airtel and Etisalat will be hiked from the 1st of December, 2016.

A top Etisalat managing officer said the telecos are negotiating how to stop the increase.

“The NCC issued the directive late last week on the orders of the Federal Government. We have not announced it yet because most of the major telcos have been meeting the NCC on how to reverse this policy, because it will be too harsh for Nigerians,” the officer said.

“However, we further gathered that the Federal Government took the decision having discovered that data rates are very low-priced in Nigeria, compared to other countries, including nearby African countries.

“The government might have also taken the decision given that Nigerian subscribers have been kicking against the proposed nine per cent Communication Tax, whose bill is currently in the National Assembly”, he added.
