TravelPHOTOS: Bus Conductor Jumps Into Canal In Lagos by metronaija2(op): 4:46pm On Aug 05, 2016
This happened in Lagos today August 5th. According to one of the passengers, he and some others boarded a bus from Ajah to CMS for N250. When they got to Ikate roundabout, the driver and conductor of the bus suddenly decided that they didn't want to continue the journey anymore and would transfer all the passengers to another bus. Unfortunately for them, older women in the bus resisted the change. They demanded that they will not leave the bus and it must also take them to their agreed destination.

The conductor tried to resist but one of the women grabbed his shirt and held her ground. Seeing that there was no other way out, he quickly jumped into the canal by the side of the road and refused to come out.
After a while he eventually dragged himself out and returned the transport fare to other passengers who agreed to enter another bus.

PoliticsPHOTOS: Governor Amosun Visits Arepo by metronaija2(op): 9:05pm On Aug 01, 2016
Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for authorising the ongoing military operation against suspected militants that had been terrorising Ibafo, Ogijo and other neighbouring communities in Ogun State.

Amosun who spoke, on Monday, while visiting the affected communities, also called on the Federal government to ensure that the creeks, especially areas hosting petroleum pipelines, are cleared for proper visibility.

The governor who was appalled by the large number of jerrycans the hoodlums use to steal fuel from ruptured pipelines, noted that there was the need for the nation's creek line to be cleared of shrubs and bushes that makes it attractive for hoodlums to hide and rupture pipelines.

"We have gone round this place they say is the camp of the vandals, and I must say I feel sad, sad because some of us can deliberately be engaging in this type of economic sabotage.

"But I will advise the federal government to embark on a deliberate policy to clear our creeks. All the shrubs and bushes 500 metres of our creeks should be cleared.

As you can all see, this place is bushy and it is enough incentive to hoodlums to hide and operate. I want to believe this is how our creek is natiowide. We should be proactive and solve this problem." the governor said.

Senator Amosun who was accompanied on the visit by the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga; Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon Adekunbi Suraj; Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa; Brigade Commander, 35th Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Ogun State; State Police Commissioner, Ahmed Illiyasu, as well as the State Director of the Department of State Security, DSS, expressed appreciation to the Service Chiefs for their focus and determination to rid the country of all forms of criminality.

He also advised residents of the affected communities to cooperate with the security operatives and ensure that their community does not harbour criminal elements.

Jobs/VacanciesBeware Of This Fake EFCC Recruitment by metronaija2(op): 8:58pm On Aug 01, 2016
It has come to the knowledge of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, that some unscrupulous members of the public have been defrauding unsuspecting Nigerians in the on-going recruitment exercise by the Commission.

The modus operandi of the scammers is to request for applications from job - seeking Nigerians and later inform the applicants to pay N49, 000 (Forty Nine Thousand Naira Only) as processing fee.

Thereafter, the “successful candidates” were asked to pay another N48, 000 (Forty Eight Thousand Naira Only) into an account for accommodation and transportation.

A poorly written appointment letter purportedly from a non-existent office of Director General, Ibrahim Lamorde and dated 03/07/2016, sent to one Ubong Aniefiok Bassey reads: “This is to inform you that you have been offered a job into the nigeria E.F.C.C, all applicant that have applied 2016/2017 nigeria EFCC form are expected to come down to the head office at Abuja on 15/07/2016.
Applicants are to pay his/her prescribed fees which is N49,000.0....All applicants are to come down to the head office at Abuja on 15/07/2017 with teller slip for the payment..Congratulations”.

The Commission does not and will never ask for money from prospective candidates in the ongoing recruitment exercise.
While efforts are on to track those behind these nefarious activities, we urge members of the public to be vigilant, not to fall victim of these scammers.

HealthMayowa Ahmed: LUTH Releases Press Statement On #savemayowa by metronaija2(op): 3:04pm On Jul 29, 2016
The Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, has denied involvement in the public appeal to raise funds for the treatment of Miss Mayowa Ahmed, one of it’s patients.

In a statement issued today, the LUTH management said contrary to any circulating information, the hospital did not refer Ahmed overseas and as an Institution, is not involved with any fund-raising activity or activist on her behalf.

The statement said LUTH has only dealt with Ahmed and her relations throughout her stay and not with any other third party.

[b]"Miss Mayowa Ahmed is an old patient of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital who has been on treatment for another condition. This 31year-old lady came into the Private Wing of LUTH on Monday, 25th July, 2016 with a history and clinical features of an intra-abdominal mass. The family and the patient brought along some results of laboratory investigations ordered and done from outside LUTH. Three different Specialists were invited to review Mayowa. The Gynaecologist, Oncologist and Haematologist all arrived at a tentative diagnosis of an abdominal malignancy. They planned to conduct a series of fresh tests to confirm the definitive diagnosis, since the earlier tests were neither requested nor authorised by any doctor from LUTH.

The family however requested to fly Miss Ahmed outside the country barely 24 hours after her admission in LUTH, thus stalling all the planned investigations meant to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. We were able to transfuse her with much-needed blood only after lots of persuasion where the family was told point blank that it was risky for her to travel by air, given her low blood count. Today is the 3rd day after admission and a definitive diagnosis has not yet been made while the relations insist on their own to carry her abroad. LUTH has only dealt with Miss Ahmed and her relations throughout her stay and not with any other third party. Contrary to any circulating information, the Lagos University Teaching Hospital did not refer Miss Ahmed overseas and this Institution is not involved with any fund-raising activity or activist on her behalf.

There was a disturbance of the peace today around the ward premises. When an altercation involving Miss Ahmed’s relatives and persons not known to the Hospital ensued, the police were invited to restore peace in the Hospital. Both parties are presently with the police and we urge the general public to patiently await the outcome of the ongoing police investigations. We also enjoin the good-natured public

CelebritiesStephanie Linus Campaigns Against Election Violence In Edo by metronaija2(op): 12:02pm On Jul 29, 2016
Ahead of the upcoming September governorship elections in Edo state, star actress Stephanie Linus, has once again reaffirmed her commitment to fighting violence against women in elections.

The Stop Violence Against Women In Elections (Stop VAWIE) Ambassador made her commitment at the Stop VAWIE campaign launch in Edo state recently where she encouraged women to participate actively in the electoral process and speak out when they are being marginalized.

The event was organized by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in partnership with the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the African Women Empowerment Guild (AWEG). Some of the dignitaries who attended include Hon. Justice Cromwell .O. Idahosa, the Chief Judge of Edo State; Hon. Henry Idahagbon, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Edo State; Jasper Veen, NDI Country Director and Iyom Josephine Anenih, Former Minister of Women Affairs.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Linus called on women and all citizens of Edo state to eschew all forms of violence that will affect women in the electoral process. She maintained that all violence against women is wrong and must be stopped. “Violence that results in the exclusion or under-representation of women, or denies women the representative of their choice inherently undermines what democracy really stands for.”

The Campaign Launch also coincided with the flag off of the "Vote Not Fight: Election No Be War" and the "Leave No One Behind: Disability Votes Count" initiatives for the Edo State elections.

The Stop Violence against Women in Elections (Stop VAWIE) campaign encourages women and all other citizens of Edo state to eschew all forms of violence that will affect women in the electoral process and also recognizes that this can increase the participation of women in the political process. This is the best way to advocate for change. The campaign is focused on Nigerian women and upholds the belief that democracy without women is impossible. By informing all women in Edo state about their civic rights and responsibilities in the upcoming September 10, 2016 governorship elections, the campaign inspires women to make active and positive impact to the elections and to politics in general.
