Oodua Progressive Union (OPU), Canada Chapter has applauded Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State over the signing of the anti-grazing bill into law. Mr. Keke Adams, National Coordinator and Chief ‘Femi Shodunke, National Public Relations Officer in a statement to NEWSVERGE said, “The signing of the anti-grazing bill into law by His Excellency, Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has caught the utmost attention of the entire members of Oodua Progressive Union, Canada Chapter. We, therefore, declare unequivocally that we welcome the law and hereby express our solid support. In line with this, we want to commend, and appreciate, the lawmakers who voted in support of the bill as history will record them as the upholder of the protection of the rights, properties and lives of their people. We must specially commend Governor Ayo Fayose for his laudable and rarified courage to stand for Ekiti people and ultimately the Yorubaland as this law will, no doubt, checkmate the myriad of robberies, unnecessary incursion and unwarranted killings, maiming, raping and destruction of farms and properties worth several millions of naira in the state, and send positive hope to other parts of the country. We are specifically enthralled by the ban placed on the carrying of arms by the Fulani herdsmen. To us the move is indeed a right measure at the time when the Federal Government of President Muhammadu Buhari, in a gobsmacking way, appears to be looking the other way while these herdsmen continue to violate the laws of the land on firearms and other weapons of destruction. Let us, however, remind ourselves that the anti-grazing law is definitely a vivid demonstration of the unassailable rights of the people of Ekiti to determine their rights in a true Federal structure. Therefore, this law is a clear reminder of the urgent need for Nigeria to be restructured along true federalism. It is in this respect that we enjoin all other governors in the South West to immediately initiate, enact and sign similar law and put in place measures to enforce it without delay. However, we will like to remind the Federal Government of Nigeria to learn from other countries where cattle rearing, which are private enterprises, are carried out in a restricted manner without any violation of other people’s rights, gibberish incursion into other people’s properties and unnecessarily endangering the lives of residents. We must not hesitate to also call on the National Assembly to emulate the step taken by the Ekiti State to protect the lives and properties of fellow Nigerians in all parts of the federation against arson, attack, maiming and killings of innocent souls under whatever guise – either religion or tribal grounds. Relatedly, we observe that it is a well-known and verifiable fact that all over our region in the South West, we have Sabo, a settlement for predominantly Hausas/Fulanis. Similarly, we have Iga, another settlement for predominant Fulanis where they gather their stock and peacefully live without disturbance or provocation by our people. But, shockingly, our findings have shown that these inhabitants of Sabo do not pay their electricity bills, and officials of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria dare not go into this enclave to disconnect their electricity. The result of this reckless, boldfaced display of unacceptable and condemnable, impunity is the fulcrum of high cost of electricity debts in the country. Finally, we encourage all Yoruba sons and daughters and all Yoruba organizations, like Oodua People’s Congress (in Nigeria) and Oodua Progressive Union in diaspora, to rise up in support of Governor Fayose, and other governors who are willing to introduce the anti-grazing law, as we reiterate our immeasurable support on ways that would guarantee the safety of lives and properties of our people in the region.” http://www.metronaija.com/2016/08/yorubas-in-canada-backs-fayoses-anti.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
Members of the Supporters Club of Akwa United Football Club who were involved in a motor accident on their way to Port Harcourt for the Week 33 NPLF league match scheduled at Liberation Stadium against Enyimba Football Club of Aba , have been assured of the best medical attention to aid their recovery. Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel gave the assurance when he visited the accident victims at St Athanasius Hospital, Federal Housing Estate, Uyo, the state capital. He said "I am grateful to God for sparing the lives of the victims even as one of them had passed on. What I've seen are serious injuries but I want to assure their families that government would do everything practicable in terms of seeking the best medical facilities and attention to enable them recover fully. That is the only thing I can do as human, the rest is left for God". He continued: "with the assistance of the Health Commissioner and the medical Director, I'm sure we will do our best. Those with severe injuries would be moved to the Specialist Hospital. You know that's a quaternary hospital, those that would be referred there would receive that level of attention while others will also get the best treatment where ever they are but I assure families of every patient the best medical attention " Governor Emmanuel commended the Medical Director of St. Athanasius Hospital Dr Emmanuel Akpanobong for his swift response to save the lives of the accident victims and particularly called on other medical practitioners to place their calling above other considerations as exhibited by the St. Athanasius Medical Group. "Even without calling me they responded to the casualties. This is what medical practitioners should do and I really appreciate the gesture. This would go down the annals of history that at a time like this they were there to assist. I'm sure God will definitely give them speedy healing." He remarked. The Governor, accompanied by Secretary to the State Government, Sir Etekamba Umoren, Commissioner for Health, Dr Dominic Ukpong and his counterpart in the Youth And Sports Ministry Sir Monday Uko, were taken round the wards by the Medical Director Dr Akpanobong. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/08/photos-gov-emmanuel-visits-akwa-united.html

The sound and sight of Lagos will on Monday dominate the popular Notting Hill Carnival in London as the #LoveLagosWeekend campaign enters Day three. To this end, the popular Nigerian Corner on Adelaja street at Notting Hill carnival will transform to Lagos Corner courtesy of the Lagos branding campaign by the Lagos State Government that has taken the city of London by storm since Saturday. https://akinwunmiambode.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_20160828_160924.jpg The #LoveLagosWeekend started on Saturday with a town hall meeting and media parley addressed by Lagos State top officials and continued on Saturday evening at I Laugh with MC Abbey and the Love Lagos Crack Ya Ribs with Julius Agu on Sunday. Promoter of the Lagos Corner, Mr. Ayo Sonaiya said that Monday’s event coincides with the Notting Hill Carnival’s 50th edition. “We are happy that at a time that Lagos State is counting down to its 50th anniversary, the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is using the huge platform of Notting Hill Carnival, which is also celebrating its 50th edition this year to reach out to millions of Nigerians and Lagosians in particular about the emerging powerful brand that Lagos has become in the areas of arts and entertainment and in connecting with the Diaspora about the great things being recorded in Lagos,” he said. https://akinwunmiambode.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_20160828_161113.jpg The Lagos Corner will provide a veritable platform for performing artistes from Lagos State to showcase their talents and further give verve to Brand Lagos as the home of creativity. It’s an initiative that has taken shape in the state. But the slogan for that brand initiative is Love Lagos, which is our way of urging the world to take note and connect with us. “ He added that the Love Lagos Weekend in London was also in sync with the government’s plan to celebrate Lagos on the 27th day of every month till May 27, 2017 when Lagos will celebrate its 50th anniversary as a state. https://akinwunmiambode.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_20160828_161018.jpg “London and Lagos have a long rich history and choosing to start the global brand awareness campaign for Lagos in London is the right thing to do given the huge number of Lagosians and Friends of Lagos that reside and work there, ” the commissioner stated. Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal Wednesday night urged officials and players of the national U17 team to make Nigeria proud when they face Niger Republic in an African championship second leg qualifying encounter in Niamey, this weekend. Speaking in Sokoto where the team camped ahead of their departure to Niger, Tambuwal said the level of determination shown by the players during their preparations showed that they mean business. “I want you to take up this challenge and take this as a match that can make or mar your soccer careers but with the kind of determination I see on your faces, victory is certain by the grace of Almighty Allah,” the Governor said. “I want to believe the reason you camped here in the City of the Caliphate is not only because we share border with Niger but also because this is a peaceful state; and it is great privilege to have you with us. I congratulate all of you for being part of this contingent on your way to Niger Republic and I’m charging you to go there and win, and qualify (for the next round), he added.” In his remarks, General-Secretary of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Dr. Mohammed Sanusi eulogized Governor Tambuwal for his selfless service to Nigerian football even long before now. “I want to use this opportunity to thank our sport-loving Governor because not many knew that the Rt. Honourable Tambuwal had long been supporting Nigerian football even before he became the Governor of Sokoto State. “We (NFF) had turbulent time when he was the Speaker but he was always there to assist us; and we would forever be grateful for that. To our joy, his administration also accepted to host the Golden Eaglets at a very short notice and we are indeed very grateful.” Sanusi added. Dr. Sanusi who is an indigene of Sokoto State, urged the government to provide befitting sports facilities in the state, adding that sport and indeed football has become a veritable avenue for physical and human development with other inherent economic benefits. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/08/photos-tambuwal-hosts-eaglets.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki on Tuesday expressed deep sadness over the passage of the Balogun Fulani of Ilorin, Alhaji Mahmud Durosinlohun Atiku at the age of 76. In a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, in Abuja, Saraki described the death of the elder statesman as a personal loss to him and a colossal loss to the Ilorin Emirate, the Government and people of Kwara State and the entire country. He stated that the contributions of the deceased to the development of Ilorin during his 15-year reign as Balogun in particular, and Kwara state in general cannot be quantified. Saraki stated: "Alhaji Mahmud Durosinlohun Atiku was a friend and father to me. He was a complete gentleman. He was always prepared to give up what is dear to him so long as such sacrificial gesture would contribute to the peaceful and harmonious coexistence of the people in his immediate domain and that of Kwara State. "He was an educationist par excellence who used his knowledge and wealth of experience to enrich the upcoming generation as a former Principal of the Government Technical College, Jebba. "His achievements marked him out for higher offices among which was his appointment as the Daudu of Afon town by the Emir of Ilorin - a position he held till he was elevated to the post of the Balogun Fulani of Ilorin 15 years ago. "On the political front, he was a progressive who ensured that peace reigned in the Emirate and beyond. As a committed peacemaker, he mediated and helped resolve several community disputes and clashes, among others. "I am indeed pained by his demise. I shall sorely miss his fatherly advice and counsel. I give glory to Allah for his glorious life. He was a constant source of inspiration to me. I cannot believe he has departed so soon," he said. The Senate President commiserated with the immediate family of the late Balogun Fulani of Ilorin, the Government and people of Kwara State, the Emir of Ilorin and the Ilorin Emirate's traditional council over the sad loss. He prayed Allah to grant the late Balogun Fulani of Ilorin Alijanah Fidaus, and his immediate family and loved once the grace to bear the irreparable loss. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/08/saraki-mourns-balogun-fulani-of-ilorin.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
