PoliticsPDP Chair: Lagos Chapter Endorses Bode George by Midex88(op): 12:53pm On Dec 04, 2017
The Lagos State Chapter of the PDP on Sunday night endorsed Chief Olabode George as their preferred candidate for the National Chairmanship position during the forthcoming December 9 National Convention of the party.

Dr Moshood Salvador, the State Chairman of PDP, gave the certification at a feedback meeting between George and members of the party, held at the party’s secretariat in GRA, Ikeja.

Reports say that George had been on campaign in the Southern states of the country to seek support for votes ahead of the National Convention.

There are about eight aspirants jostling for the National chairmanship seat of the party from the south.

They include: the former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Gbenga Daniel, former Minister of Education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran.

Others are: the former Minister of Youth Development, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja and former Lagos State PDP governorship candidate, Mr Jimi Agbaje, Prince Uche Secondus, a former acting National Chairman of PDP, and Chief Raymond Dokpesi.

Salvador said: “ On behalf of Lagos PDP, we must vote for Chief Bode George come December 9; the South west is the rightful region to have the chairman of our great party.

“In the last dispensation, Ekiti produced the Vice- Chairman while Osun and Oyo states took the highest office. It is only Lagos that is left and what we want is the chairman.

“The South-east and the South-south have produced a chairman before that is why it is our turn to have the chairman of PDP,’’ he said.

Earlier, George assured members that if given the opportunity to serve, he would re-establish the culture and tradition put in place by the founding fathers of the PDP.

“If I am given the opportunity, I will not be new to the management of this party because the party’s constitution is not going to be new to me; I know its provisions as I know the back of my hand.

“We grew up with the party and the founding fathers handed over the culture of the party to us and that is what we would re-establish.

“Just check out, from the end of our convention to the national election is a very short time, it is not a time where you can do experimentation, it is not a time you can bring a green horn to be the chairman of the party.

“If you are desirous that you want to win that election, on that day before you cast your votes search your consciences and think very carefully.

“Secondly, it is not a matter of life and death, if I don’t believe that I have anything to offer, I will not be here.

“I will not compromise on things that are not right and are not in the constitution.

“ I will do things the way they should be done and everybody will be happy. That was how our founding fathers were moving the party forward ,’’ George said.
Sports2018 World Cup: Eagles Must Not Lose First Match – Shorunmu by Midex88(op): 12:43pm On Dec 04, 2017
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu, has warned the team against losing its first game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
The three-time African champions, who were the first to qualify for Russia 2018 from the region was on Friday night in Moscow drawn in Group D alongside familiar foe Argentina, European heavyweight, Croatia and debutants Iceland.
Ike who was Nigeria’s first choice goalie at the 2012 FIFA World Cup reckons that the first match against Croatia is vital because it may decide if the Eagles will make it out of the group or not.
Speaking to SportingLife, Shorunmu said: “In the World Cup anything is possible but a lot depends on how well you prepare and we can’t afford to underrate any team.
“Our first match against Croatia is very important and we must strive to get the three points. I know it will be very difficult but winning that game will give us a better chance of qualifying from the group.
“Because if we lose our first game it will bring a huge pressure on the team – so you need to get at least a draw.”
Interestingly, Nigeria has played Argentina four times already in their previous five World Cup appearances and will be meeting Croatia and Iceland for the very first time.

PoliticsMrs Osinbajo Visits, Advises Trafficked Persons In Lagos by Midex88(op): 5:42pm On Dec 03, 2017
The wife of the Vice- President, Mrs Oludolapo Osinbajo, on Sunday visited the NAPTIP Lagos Shelter to interact with some trafficked persons.

Mrs Osinbajo was received by the Director-General (D-G) of NAPTIP, Dame Julie Okah-Donli and the Special Assistant to the President on Nigerians in the Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

She said that she was at the shelter to see the victims, find out how they were doing, what had happened to them and what they wished to do in life.
“I am here to see you people because you are very important. As a mother, I am not happy with what you people are going through. I am not here to see the building but you.
“I came here because you all are our children. I am here so that we can talk on what happened to you, what you want me to do for you.
“Many of you came from different states and from the Republic of Benin. So, why did you leave home to another place? I want to also know the people that took you away to another land.
“Now that you are here, forget about the past, we are here to discuss about tomorrow. There are things that you can do.

“Some of you can sing and other good things, you are going to face that for your tomorrow.

“ All of you have suffered yesterday, no more suffering tomorrow, because you all are princesses,” she told the victims who were so happy to see her around.

Mrs Osinbajo, who commended NAPTIP’s management for their efforts, taught the victims a song, which depicted their new status as princesses.

According to her song: “I am a princess, I am special, every day I promise I will do my best, my future is bright, and God’s grace will help me, I am now a Nigerian princess.”

She promised to send gifts for their comfort and assist them to better their tomorrow, while she warned them against unruly behaviour.
Mrs Osinbajo also urged the victims to take seriously all the teachings they were receiving from NAPTIP.
Earlier, the D-G of NAPTIP, Dame Julie Okah-Donli told the visitor that some of the victims were repatriated from Libya and Europe, while some were intercepted by security agents at Nigeria borders.
Okah-Donli said that more expected to be repatriated from Libya and other countries.
She said the Lagos Shelter located within Omole Phase 2 was currently accommodating 64 of the victims.

Also, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who commended Mrs Osinbajo for the visit, said that her presence would bring good memories to the victims, noting that some of them were between ages 13years and 15years.

“We count on your support. Traffickers are making money from innocent children and ladies. We are looking forward for the evacuation of other victims abroad,” she said.

PoliticsPDP Chairmanship: Jonathan, Wike Fall Apart Over Secondus by Midex88(op): 5:52pm On Dec 02, 2017
Ahead of the make or break convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on December 9, former President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State are at daggers drawn over Prince Uche Secondus’ bid to become the party’s national chairman.

Jonathan, our correspondent gathered, is mobilising serious opposition against Secondus, a frontline chairmanship aspirant in the party who hails from the Ijaw-speaking part of Rivers State.

The former President is said to be determined to shut down the ambition of Secondus, who enjoys the support of Wike and other South-South governors.

The Nation investigation revealed that Wike is a key supporter of Secondus, a former acting Chairman of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC).

He was said to be angry that instead of closing ranks with him and other South-South governors to ensure that his fellow Ijaw brother becomes the next chairman, the former President was busy working against Secondus.

It was gathered that Jonathan’s moves against Secondus were borne out of his cold war with Wike and another South-South governor, following his belief that the duo frustrated an initial plot by his key loyalists to return him as PDP’s Presidential candidate in 2019.

Credible party sources said there was a failed grand plan by Jonathan’s loyalists, especially former ministers and other key aides who served under him, to hijack the party’s structure and pave the way for him to return as its standard bearer.

A stalwart of the PDP, who spoke in confidence, said: “Jonathan has continued to blame the failure of the plan on Wike and the other South-South governor. He believes that the duo frustrated his ambition to return as the party’s presidential candidate.

“His next move is to stop any aspirant for the position of national chairman who has links with Wike.

“He does not want Secondus, knowing that Wike is the one behind his ambition.

“Unknown to many people, Jonathan and Wike have fallen apart and Jonathan’s wife is no longer close to the governor of Rivers State.

“If Secondus is out of the way, Jonathan and his wife, Patience, will go for the structures of the PDP, especially in Bayelsa and Rivers states, to enable them to play key roles in the 2019 elections.”

It was gathered that Jonathan was aligning with the PDP elements in the north against Secondus.

The former President reportedly held various meetings with PDP stakeholders in the north, which has significant number of the delegates for the convention, to extract commitment from them that they would not cast their votes for Secondus.

The party source added: “Jonathan is serious with his anti-Secondus campaign in the north. The north has many of the delegates and presidential aspirants, and Jonathan is reaching out to all of them.

“While he is openly backing a former minister, Nenadi Usman, to become the national secretary of the PDP, Jonathan wants any chairmanship aspirant other than Secondus to emerge victorious at the party’s national convention.

“His actions are creating divisions in the party ahead of the convention. The Ijaw stakeholders in the party and the South-South are not happy with the former President for not supporting their own.

“But like he failed in his previous plots, he will definitely fail again, because Secondus is unstoppable.”

A group, the South-South Coalition for Good Governance, yesterday confirmed that Jonathan’s clandestine moves against Secondus was real, and condemned the actions of the former President.

ýThe group, in a statement signed by its Co-ordinator, Mr. John Boma-Harrison, said theý grand plot was being hatched by Jonathan, using some of his northern allies.

The group said that the former president was mobilising northern delegates against the candidacy of Secondus, despite Secondus being a southerner and a proud son of the Niger Delta.

While condemning the former President’s “divisive attitude”, they wondered why he would move against his own Ijaw brother who enjoyed the overwhelming support of majority of PDP supporters across the country.

They observed that Secondus was tipped as the possible winner because of his popularity and his rich profile in party politics, adding that nothing would stop him.

They advised the former president to desist from his anti-Secondus campaign, especially his attempt to mobilise northern delegates to vote against the candidacy of Secondus.

They also called on the former president to concentrate on playing the role of a statesman rather than engage in “subterfuge and unbridled politickingý” that would further dent his image.

They said: “We have uncovered a plot by former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to scuttle the chances of the most accepted candidate for the position of national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondusý.

“We have it on good authority that the former president is using northern delegates to mobilise against Secondus who hails from the south, and an Ijaw man like him.

“We are disappointed in him, but we want to use this medium to advise him to retrace his steps.

“He is a statesman, and he should play that role.”
BusinessFG Sets Aside N5bn For Local Miners by Midex88(op): 5:44pm On Dec 02, 2017
The Federal Government has set aside N5 billion to empower artisan miners across the country as part of measures to ensure participation of all Nigerians in economic development.

The Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, disclosed this on Saturday when he inspected the gold mining site at Garin Awal at Fakai Local Government Area in Kebbi State.

“We have N5 Billion in Bank of Industry for the use of small scale artisan miners, not only for self-equipping but to contribute to the economic development of Kebbi state and Nigeria, so that our economy will grow,” he said.

Fayemi explained that ISS-Hass Ltd, a Chinese mining company, has been in the community exploiting gold for more than three years, but had failed to develop the area by establishing schools, building roads, as well as providing portable water and employment for the youth, as part of an agreement entered into with the company.

He promised to investigate the allegations against the licensed operator in Garin Awal Village, Fakai Local Government of Kebbi State for alleged breach of agreement reached with the host community.

“We have seen what our artisan miners can do, which professionals in this business failed to achieve. That is from the very little efforts they are putting in place with their own efforts, digging and organising themselves.

“What we need is to enter into partnership with the state, to assist these miners, so that they could have land to operate, technical support as a way of improving their productivity and ensuring that they utilise the equipment beyond exploring mercury and finally support them through the Bank of Industry,” he said.

The minister, who expressed disappointment over the lack of commitment of licensed operators, said “ the provision of the law stipulates that licensed operators must provide community support and this must be captured in an agreement, which we call Community Development Agreement.

“The village head has told us that all the things they promised, none of them were done. No school, they have not seen anything. They just did rudimentary road that provides access for the operators,” he said.

In his remarks, the state governor, Abubakar Bagudu, expressed appreciation to the President Muhammadu Buhari administration for its good policies, saying they had made the state to excel in agriculture.

Bagudu said the people o the state were ready to replicate the same achievement in the mining sector.

SportsNigeria Know World Cup Opponent Today by Midex88(op): 4:57am On Dec 01, 2017
The Super Eagles will discover their opponents in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia at the tournament’s draw ceremony at the State Kremlin Palace in Moscow on Friday. The 32-team 21st World Cup has been scheduled to take place between June 14 and July 15, 2018.

Nigeria, who will make their sixth World Cup appearance in Russia, are in Pot 4 alongside Serbia, Australia, Japan, Morocco, Panama, South Korea and Saudi Arabia.

Three-time African champions the Super Eagles could be drawn against powerhouses Germany, Argentina, Brazil and France, who are all in Pot 1.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Nigeria were drawn against Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran in Group F.

Austin Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu are among the former football stars invited by FIFA as special guests for the draw.

The former Eagles captains will join the likes of ex-Brazil striker Ronaldo, Samuel Eto’o, Ronaldinho, Marcel Desaily, Lothar Matthaus and Peter Schmeichel at the ceremony.

Former PSG midfielder Okocha represented Nigeria at the 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cups, while Kanu appeared at the 1998, 2002 and 2010 finals

Holders Germany will find out who stands between them and a successful defence of the World Cup at the draw.

After beating Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the final at the Maracana in Rio to lift the World Cup in 2014, the aim for Joachim Loew’s side now is to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to retain the trophy, according to AFP.

Having already won the Confederations Cup in Russia earlier this year with a fringe squad, the Germans are leading favourites for glory in 2018, a status that Loew himself has said there is no avoiding.

Certainly, the Germans can expect stiff competition from the Brazil of Neymar – revitalised after their nightmare 7-1 loss to the Germans on home soil – and Spain in particular.

The first step, though, is discovering who they will meet in the group stage as the focus turns to the State Kremlin Palace, where the snow and freezing temperatures of a Russian winter will greet the footballing world.

Germany, Brazil and Argentina are all in the first pot along with France, European champions Portugal, Belgium, Poland and the hosts.

But if those nations are certain of avoiding each other, danger lurks in pot two, where the Spanish – rebuilt into a formidable force by Julen Lopetegui after poor showings in 2014 and at Euro 2016 – lie along with England.

This will be the penultimate 32-nation tournament before FIFA’s grand plan for 48 teams comes into effect for 2026 and world body will keep apart sides from the same continent with the exception of Europe, which has 14 representatives to go into the eight groups.

As a result, most of the sections will contain two European nations, raising the prospect of England or Spain meeting Germany or France in heavyweight contests right from the start.

Alternatively, there is the possibility of England being drawn with Iceland in a repeat of the Euro 2016 clash in Nice that ended in humiliation for Roy Hodgson’s England.

Those sides will add something new to a tournament that will be deprived, amongst others, of Italy for the first time since 1958, 2014 semi-finalists Holland , and the United States.
