Politics11 Nigerian Incoming Senators Facing Corruption Probe by midolian(op):

On February 23, Nigerians in various part of the country went out in their numbers to different polling units to elect a president and lawmakers that will represent them in the 9th National Assembly.

The lawmakers elected include 109 senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives.

Those elected will replace members of the outgoing 8th Senate and House of Representatives.

The 8th National Assembly, particularly the Senate will be remembered for many things including its various controversies. These include the controversy that trailed the election of its principal officers, invasion of the Senate chamber by thugs who stole its mace, and mass defection of members including the president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki.

The 8th Senate also had several members, including Mr Saraki, who faced corruption charges. They were frequently in courtrooms, and the custody of anti-corruption agencies, answering questions for their alleged corrupt practices. Some of the cases are still ongoing.

Like the outgoing Senate, the 9th Senate will also have members who are facing major corruption probes with some already being prosecuted. About 10 per cent of the newly elected Nigerian senators are facing corruption probes. Some are already being prosecuted. They include former governors who allegedly stole state funds while in office and other public officials. All of them have, however, denied any wrongdoing.

PREMIUM TIMES reviews some of the incoming senators facing corruption charges.

Orji Uzor Kalu
The former governor of Abia State won the Abia North senatorial election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mr Kalu won with 30,580 votes while the closest opposition candidate from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mao Ohuabunwa, recorded 21,940 votes

The EFCC is prosecuting Mr Kalu for allegedly stealing Abia funds while in office. He is being prosecuted alongside his former commissioner for finance, Ude Udeogo, and a company, Slok Nigeria Ltd, said to be owned by him.

Mr Kalu’s original trial started just after he left office in 2007. In October 2016, EFCC renewed its prosecution and preferred 34 count charges against Mr Kalu. But he and Mr Udeogo pleaded not guilty to the charges and were granted bail.

The EFCC ultimately reactivated Mr Kalu’s case last year, filing amended graft charges of up to N7.7 billion against him. In November 2018, a judge frowned at Mr Kalu’s foreign travel without the permission of the court and the EFCC. That did not deter the former Abia governor from returning to Nigeria and contesting, winning a senatorial election.

The former governor of Benue State is the senator-elect for Benue North Senatorial District under the PDP.

The federal government is prosecuting Mr Suswam and two others for alleged diversion of N9.79 billion while he was in office as governor.

Those charged alongside Mr Suswam in the 32- count charge are Omadachi Oklobia, his former commissioner for finance, and Janet Aluga, a former accountant, Benue State Government House.

‎In the charge, the trio allegedly cornered the said funds between 2012 and 2015 while Mr Suswam was governor of the state.

They are also accused of conspiracy, conversion of property derived directly from corruption; collaboration to conceal property derived from corruption; obtaining by false pretence and accepting cash payments, exceeding the amount authorised by law.

Chimaroke Nnamani

Former Governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani, won the Enugu East Senatorial Election conducted on Saturday.

Mr Nnamani of the PDP polled a total of 128,843 votes to beat his closest rival, Lawrence Eze of the APC, who got 14,225 votes.

Mr Nnamani, his former aide, Sunday Anyaogu, and six companies were first arraigned in 2007 for allegedly conspiring to divert about N5.3 billion from the coffers of Enugu State.

The case had been handled by no fewer than three judges.

In February 2018, the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court dismissed the charges against Mr Nnamani, for lack of “proper charges” before the court. The EFCC vowed to file fresh charges, saying it has strong evidence against the ex-governor.

Ifeanyi Ubah

Ifeanyi Ubah won the Anambra South Senatorial ticket on the platform of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) polling 87,081 votes.

Mr Ubah, a former governorship candidate in the state, defeated his closest rival, Chris Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who got 62,462 votes.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is investigating and prosecuting Capital Oil and Gas Limited and its Managing Director, Mr Ubah, for their alleged complicity in a fraud worth N43.29 billion, perpetrated through the petroleum subsidy scheme.

The EFCC and the police accused Mr Ubah and his company of obtaining subsidy payments by false pretences, stealing, money laundering and forgery with respect to the alleged fraudulent payment of N43.29 billion in the transactions conducted in 2011.

Peter Nwaoboshi

INEC declared Delta North Senatorial candidate (PDP), Peter Nwaoboshi, the winner of the last Saturday’s National Assembly election.

Mr Nwaoboshi scored 186,423 votes to beat Doris Uboh of the APC who polled 36,360 to emerge second.

He was arraigned for an alleged fraud of N322 million by the EFCC in April 2018.

Mr Nwaoboshi was in court alongside two firms on charges bordering on conspiracy and money laundering.

The judge, Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court on April 25, 2018, ruled that the senator should be remanded in prison. He got bail two days after. The trial is ongoing.

Abba Moro
The former interior minister, Abba Moro, of the PDP was declared as the winner for Benue South Senatorial seat.

Mr Moro polled 85,162 votes to beat his closest rival, Stephen Lawani of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mr Moro, who served under ex-president, Goodluck Jonathan, was sued for fraud over a botched recruitment drive, which led to a stampede that left 20 people dead in 2014.

He is currently facing trial though he has pleaded not guilty to his role in an alleged $2.5 million (£1.8 million) fraud, involving missing application fees.

How a Nigerian Presidential Candidate Hired a Trump Lobbyist and Ended Up in Trump’s Lobby — “Trump, Inc.” Podcast

This week, “Trump, Inc.” goes inside the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. Located in the Old Post Office, the hotel is at the center of three lawsuits alleging President Donald Trump is violating the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause barring the president from taking gifts from foreign governments.

We stayed the night. (Listen to our new episode about our visit.)

Among the many prominent guests we saw: Nigerian presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and his entourage. Nigeria’s elections were last weekend, and Abubakar was the main challenger to the incumbent president out of a crowded field of candidates. After a tightly contested race, he came in second.

Abubakar’s visit is surprising for several reasons. He had been reportedly barred from the U.S. for nearly 10 years for his alleged involvement in corruption while he was Nigeria’s vice president. Perhaps you remember the $90,000 in cash that was found in Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson’s freezer back in 2005? That was allegedly a bribe for Abubakar.

A 2010 Senate report on foreign corruption dedicated an entire chapter to Abubakar and his wife. The report detailed their efforts to transfer $40 million in “suspect funds” into the U.S. through offshore accounts while Abubakar served as vice president.

Abubakar has never been arrested or charged, either in the U.S. or Nigeria, and says he has never taken bribes. He has also called the reports of his immigration ban “misinformation.”

Last year, Abubakar hired a lobbyist, Scott Mason, who was a former Trump campaign adviser. Disclosures filed by Mason show he lobbied Congress, the State Department and the National Security Council on “visa issues.”

https://assets.propublica.org/images/articles/_threeTwo1600w/20190227-scott-mason-2.jpg
Disclosures filed by lobbyist Scott Mason.

Mason and his lobby firm did not respond to requests for comment.

Abubakar’s party also hired another firm close to Trump: Ballard Partners, run by Brian Ballard, former finance co-chairman for Trump’s campaign in Florida and a top Trump fundraiser.

Years ago, Ballard was Trump’s lobbyist when he wanted to establish a casino in the Sunshine State. Now, Ballard is what Politico called “The Most Powerful Lobbyist in Trump’s Washington.”

Filings by the firm say only that it was working on “advocacy services relative to US-Nigeria bilateral relations.” James Rubin, a partner at the firm, said they were hired to work on “promoting free and fair elections” in Nigeria.

The visa status of individuals is confidential, but Reuters has reported that the U.S. government temporarily suspended Abubakar’s visa ban after a push by the lobbyists.

A spokesperson from the State Department declined to comment on Abubakar’s case. But the spokesperson said, “In cases where the secretary of state has credible information that officials of foreign governments have been involved in significant corruption … those individuals and their immediate family members are ineligible for entry into the United States.”

Abubakar isn’t the only foreign political figure to patronize the Trump International Hotel in Washington since the 2016 election; there’s a long list of others. Dignitaries from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Malaysia and Azerbaijan have all lodged at the Old Post Office. And this past year, the Trump Organization reported an increase in foreign profits to their hotels.

It is now crystal clear that Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress is heading for a crushing defeat of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

There had been surprises and upsets in many states as the results were announced, but not predicted was that the APC candidate, vilified on social media by PDP warriors, on the pulpits by bigoted hate preachers, would return a resounding victory against PDP.

Here are some of the lessons learnt in the February 23 election:

1. Social media power overrated: If elections are won on Twitter and Facebook, President Buhari would by now be writing his handover notes and be preparing to tend his cows on his farm in Daura. But the limitations of the social media platforms especially Twitter have just been exposed by the results of the election. The candidate of the PDP got more retweets, more likes for tweets by supporters on Twitter, but such preferences count for nothing in the real voting. For information, although there are over 92 million Nigerians using the internet, not all of them are connected to the social media platforms.

According to some verified statistics, about 25 million Nigerians use Facebook, with 16 million being active users.

Twitter users are in several millions, representing just 8.83% of social media users. At 8.29 %, users of Pinterest are surprisingly close to users of Twitter. Instagram commands just 2.0 per cent and Facebook 78.47 per cent as at 2018.

This may explain why the orchestrated campaigns of falsehood and calumny against the APC candidate did not get much traction going into the election. As past elections had shown in Nigeria, the people who vote are the ordinary people, the peasants, petty traders, artisans who are not wired to the social media platforms. And they have spoken in favour of the candidate they believe is the greatest friend of the ‘Talakawa’.

2. Elite power, pulpit power has been smashed by the results of the election. Those hate preachers who abused the pulpit to command their congregation to vote for the PDP have been put to shame. Elite in the north and south who believe Buhari has been ‘bad business’ and worked vigorously to dethrone him, now also know their powers are limited. The ordinary masses hold the master key to ‘people power’. Buhari, like in 2015, has overcome elite gang up and conspiracy of the churches. In Abuja, the votes recorded in Kubwa, Garki, Mbappe and some other places with a wide Christian population and civil servants against Buhari were to some extent offset by farmers living in the villages around the capital.

3. Politicians who put a lot of score on endorsement now should know better. The Afenifere in Yorubaland and the various political groups largely failed to mobilise the votes for Buhari in the region, despite their endorsement. The results in Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo were too close to show that the people did not heed the instructions of the groups. Ohanaeze was also rebuffed to some extent in the south east states. The Northern Elders Forum of Ango Abdullahi, the Middle Belt Forum, the Arewa Consultative Forum need some reality checks about their power as opinion moulders.

4. The fourth lesson is that Igbo appeared to have learnt some lessons from their one-basket political disposition in 2015. In 2019, they did not put all their eggs in one basket, as they gave Buhari more than 25 per cent in Ebonyi, Abia, Anambra and Imo. Only Enugu gave Buhari the snub as the opposition recorded a thumping victory here, 355,553 votes to Buhari’s 54,423. In Lagos, however, Igbo voting pattern like suspected in 2015, unsettled their Yoruba hosts, leading to threatening inter-ethnic hostility. Yoruba believe that Igbo should always support their interests, afterall ‘When in Rome, one is expected to behave like the Romans’.

5.All politics is truly local. Kwarans demonstrated this in the way they humiliated the PDP and its chief strategist, Bukola Saraki, rejecting the campaign of ‘better Nigeria’, ‘making Nigeria work again’, for home grown wild fire campaign of ‘O To ge’, which translates to “Enough is Enough’. The campaign dethroned Saraki from Kwara central senate seat and smashed the PDP into political irrelevance, with the APC recording 308,984 votes, two and a half times more than the 138,184 votes recorded by the PDP. In Daura, Katsina, voters showed the APC senatorial candidate that he needed to settle with them as they clobbered him, by voting for the Accord Party candidate, in the same polling unit, where Buhari recorded over 700 votes to three for Atiku. In Kogi state, Dino Melaye won a return ticket to the Senate despite all the controversies he generated. He will need to thank fumbling ex-police chief, Ibrahim Idris for making him popular with his people. And in Bauchi, speaker Yakubu Dogara survived his expected political demise and won fourth term ticket in his Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal constituency.

6. Buhari is the only politician in Nigeria today with a solid home base. President Buhari has proven once again that he is the Awolowo, Aminu Kano of our time, posting overwhelming victory in his home state of Katsina and other states, such asd Kano, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kaduna, Jigawa in the North West that he had consistently won since 2003, when he made the first bid for Nigeria’s presidency. Buhari also showed commanding presence in the North east. Atiku failed to show such political force in his state of Adamawa that he won with a few thousand votes. Then to show how Buhari has gathered much political traction since elected in 2015, he had a strong showing in states, such as Benue, Plateau, Taraba, Nasarawa, with high Christian population, that Atiku thought he would have won convincingly, based on the propaganda that Buhari is anti-Christian. Buhari similarly cut inroads into South South and South East states, denying Atiku any Tsunami effect from the zones.

7. Finally, lies, falsehood do get their comeuppances in the fullness of time. This election has proven this. Buhari in the run-up to the poll was the target of so many vicious lies and propaganda. The most reprehensible lie was that he was a clone from Sudan planted in Aso Rock. He was also painted as a hater of Christians, who allowed Boko Haram to seize a Christian girl Leah Sharibu. They accused him of promoting an Islamisation agenda and of being an ethnic bigot who favoured his region in appointments. Some even said he had finished Nigeria with foreign debts, a claim that was not supported by available facts. The opposition will need to invent new lies now as the President has posted a most crushing defeat of their candidate.

PoliticsPDP Agent Rejects Victory As Atiku Beats Buhari In Adamawa by midolian(op): 6:15pm On Feb 25, 2019
Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), soundly defeated President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, securing 410,266 votes to his opponent’s 378,072.

However, after the figures were announced one local government after another, the PDP agent rejected Atiku’s victory in three local governments — Numan, Michika and Madagali — arguing that since the first had been plagued by herdsmen and the other two by Boko Haram, it was impossible to get such huge population of voters with Permanent Voter cards (PVCs).

He insisted that the results were made up. However, he did not have the support of other political parties.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), meanwhile, has already accepted the result and is on the verge of making an official declaration of the winner at state level.

I am coming
PoliticsThe Death Of Bukola Abiku Mesujamba Saraki: A Funeral No One Attends by midolian(op): 5:21pm On Feb 25, 2019
It was a circus of shame. Except professional mourners, no one is mourning the political death of one of Nigeria's most detestable and controversial senate presidents.

It is my sad duty today to inform you of the political demise of Senator Bukola Abiku Mesujamba Saraki, the Patriarch of Saraki Corruption Dynasty (SCD). Mesujamba Saraki entered his political mortality at 15:20 Nigerian time Saturday, February 23, 2019. The brutal electoral defeat of Mesujamba Saraki, the Kwara native son on Saturday capped one of the longest running fraudulent career of a politician of our time.

His appearance at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in the heady days of his false assets declaration was heralded by a carnival of 50 senators of who's who in the Senate of Robbers. It was a circus of shame. Except professional mourners, no one is mourning the political death of one of Nigeria's most detestable and controversial senate presidents.

Mesujamba's die-hard loyalists, benefactors of his corruption spoils, tribes’ men and women, confused social media bloggers, professional mourners, criers, and of course the 50 thieves from the Senate have all gone crazy, mourning all day and all night, falling over themselves to get all the misery right. “Oh, what an exit!” they cried cried and pleaded “Mesujamba don't leave us yet, don't go too soon.” In howling hysterical sorrow, they asked: “Who's this Mesujamba?” “What kind of God has lived among us?” “How we will ever get by without him?” “He had his moments. He had some style. After all, he's from the famous SCD.”

Don't cry for Mesujamba. His political demise has come full circle. He's gone now. As soon as the smoke of his political funeral clears, we're all going to see the evil he did for his people over the years. He let his people and nation down. He was supposed to have been invincible like his father the erstwhile patriarch of the SCD. But in the end, he was not. He fell like a lifeless fig tree.

Sing you foolish Nigerians. But you've all got it wrong. Enjoy your mourning and cries because your tears will know no end. There are no more tears to shed for your beloved Mesujamba. Your prince is dead – politically. Your king is through. Your king is not coming back to you. For 40 years, his family kept the people of Kwara State in servitude, feeding them with crumbs and dog food. But the star of the corrupt Senate is gone. The glamour has worn thin. I know that's a pretty bad news for you.

Sing you fools, paid mourners cry your eyes out. He's not coming back to you! Don't cry for Mesujamba. Weep for yourselves. The SCD spreads far and wide. He's deceptively smart – a legacy from his dad. Mesujamba became so powerful, he also became proud. And when his final autopsy was in, power, greed, pride, arrogance and presumption led to his tragic death. He was stricken with political revenge and died a pauper. He was killed by his own passions and desires. His end proves right the saying that the alternative to discipline is disaster. His life mirrors how a useless life is as good as early death.

Don't cry for Mesujamba. As a politician, Mesujamba was heartless, cold, calculating, and arrogant. He couldn't be controlled. You fools mourning and crying for Mesujamba you have been swallowed up by Mesujamba many times. And those who are not have become mad and sick. Mesujamba was dangerous to the sociopolitical and economic health of Kwara and our nation.

Fools don't cry for Mesujamba. Truth be told, he never loved you. He never served you. He never cared for you. All his life, he lived a wild and mad existence. But he kept his promise of being the prince and the king of corruption. His eyes were larger than his stomach. He broke every political protocol and decency. Stop mourning and stop wailing and stop shaking your heads as if you’re mourning the death of your mother.

Oh you fools, let Mesujamba ride ignominiously to his political sunset. How dare you cry for him? Why are you crying for him? Mesujamba robbed you cold blind of your millions and your livelihood. You all spiraled into poverty. Seemingly, you have not learned your lessons from Mesujamba's financial slaughter of our banks. He got his fame, power, and pride through your sheepish loyalty. For 40 years the SCD engineered a feverish rampage of our common wealth. He's been a thorn in your flesh and in our flesh. Those who opposed him are stepped on, cut up, or simply disappear! Oh fools, how can you be so short-sighted and so forgetful?

Fools, you play with the bull and you get the horns! Anyone of you with half a brain should be rejoicing that Mesujamba is no more the Senate President. Under SCD, the Kwara State economy was a wreck. It was buried in gargantuan debt, and suffocated in steep poverty. Well then, Kwara people roll out the drums and dance round the state. Celebrate your liberation and freedom from oppression, poverty, slavery, and bondage. Hold a thanksgiving service and thank your creator that your dark days are over. It's passover time. Let's celebrate!

You fools crying for Mesujamba you're either deaf, dumb, or blind or suffering from an eclectic mix of the three. Oh you peons, stop shedding tears for him. No tears are needed for his political departure. That's how and that's the way Mesujamba should go. For long, he sarcastically mocked our criminal justice system. To be sure, it is the recurring desire of Nigerians to make Mesujamba a classical example of the War on Corruption to purify our body politic of toxic political leaders. But it never happened!

Leaders, be they good or bad are created by followers. You followers help created Mesujamba as a toxic leader. If you don't know, toxic leaders leave their followers worse off than they find them. Mesujamba left you in bad shape. Minions like you are the only Nigerians that opposed Mesujamba's prosecution. I tell you this: His prosecution was about asking you to fight for your children, to fight for your parents and grandparents, to fight for your livelihood and survival, and to fight for the future of our country.

Once upon a time, when wicked King Jehoram of Judah died of divinely inflicted disease no one regretted his passing. He was buried in a place apart from the “royal cemetery” with no mourners or the customary burning of spices in his honor. It was a funeral no one attended. The party is over for Mesujamba. His political end has come. Don't cry for Mesujamba. Let Mesujamba mourn Mesujamba. Like King Jehoram, no one should attend Mesujamba's political funeral!

i made that mistake voting PCP instead of PDP immediately i noticed it, i went to the corpers and requested for another ballot paper which they refused saying I've already thumbprinted (even if they tore the old sheet).

if you check your findings very well you will find out that PCP of party was created by a APC member. i wonder what PDP campaign team were doing they didn't find out about it
You are an incorrigible liar

PDP clowns now hiding their sorrows behind meaningless epistles. Saraki is a loser. Atiku is losing. Accept your defeat and stop looking for cheap excuses.

Saraki told everybody that cared to listen that he’s not just going to win Kwara, he boasted of winning Lagos for PDP and wining Nigeria for Atiku. He couldn’t even win his local government not to talk of his state. Dude is a fraudster and not any general.
