The All Progressives Congress (APC) has tasked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to publish its findings on the properties of "a current Senate presiding officer facing EFCC investigations".

The party said it is difficult to fathom how "a federal lawmaker, who before his current position was an Associate Lecturer and Local Government Chairman, owns 22 high-end properties in Nigeria and other exclusive locations across the world".

Although the party did not expressly say so, the lawmaker is believed to be Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who is being investigated and was detained on August 1 by the EFCC over his linkage to 22 properties.

In a statement by Yekini Nabena, the party’s Acting National Publicity Secretary, APC urged the EFCC and other related organisations to intensify efforts aimed at “investigating and recovering public funds and assets that have been stolen by public officials".

Commending President Muhammadu Buhari on his stance in the fight against corruption, the APC restated its commitment to ensuring that the country is run by individuals who have integrity.

The statement read: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) calls on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC); Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and other allied anti graft bodies to intensify efforts at investigating and recovering public funds and assets that have been stolen by public officials.

“Fighting corruption is one of the key election promises the Party made to Nigerians and we remain solidly committed and determined to achieve it.

“Our call to anti-graft agencies is imperative as we prepare for the 2019 general elections. We must check the use of stolen public funds to finance elections in this country. Again, it is important that the Nigerian electorate have the opportunity to choose from candidates that can pass the integrity and corruption test. We must ensure that we never again entrust the leadership of this great country to gang of thieves whose sole aim is treasury looting as brazenly displayed in past Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administrations.”

In the reference to Ekweremadu, the party said: “An example is a current Senate presiding officer facing EFCC investigations. It is difficult to fathom how a federal lawmaker, who before his current position was an Associate Lecturer and Local Government Chairman, owns 22 high-end properties in Nigeria and other exclusive locations across the world.

“It is our hope that the anti-graft agencies investigating this Senate Presiding officer makes public his and other corruption probe status reports so that Nigerians can know them for who they are.”

Ekweremadu was the pioneer Chairman of Aninri Local Government in Enugu State, a post he held between 1997 and 1998, and an Associate Lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law from the University of Abuja.

An FCT High Court has restrained Senate President Bukola Saraki from declaring the seat of former Minority Leader of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio vacant.

Justice Othman Musa on Wednesday also ordered Saraki not to impede Senator Akpabio's access to the Senate building or taking any action aimed at "overreaching his privileges and rights as a Senator pending the determination of the originating Summons of the applicant."

Justice Musa ordered service of the court papers on Saraki through the Clerk of the National Assembly, Clerk of the Senate or any other Clerk or reasonable staff of the National Assembly at the assembly complex.

The orders were made after an ex parte application by Akpabio's lawyers, Chikaosolu Ojukwu and Ebere Ahanonu seeking to stop moves to declare his seat vacant following his defection from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The suit has been adjourned to August 29 for further hearing.

The Speaker of Kaduna State House of Assembly, Hon. Aminu Shagalinku, on Wednesday declared vacant, the seats of the former Deputy Speaker of the house, John Audu Kwaturu, and another lawmaker, Junaid Yakubu, who defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Kwaturu and Yakubu who represents Kachia and Kudan state constituencies respectively had defected from the APC on Friday, giving various reasons for their action.

Declaring their seats vacant on the floor of the house, Shagalinku maintained that the defection of the lawmakers was illegal and unconstitutional as there was no faction or crisis in the APC at the state and national levels.

The speaker said the declaration was in line with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
However Kwaturu, has described the action of the speaker as undemocratic and unconstitutional, vowing to use all constitutional means to stop it.

In a telephone interview with THISDAY, Kwaturu who resigned his position as the Deputy Speaker on Tuesday, said he arrived the house when the sitting was over as he was preparing to handover the official car of the deputy speaker and other property in his possession.

“I defected from the APC on Friday and I tendered my resignation as the Deputy Speaker on Tuesday. I arrived the house late because I was sorting the official car and other property of the office of the Deputy Speaker in my possession to hand over them since I had resigned from the position.

“My defection is in accordance with the provisions of the constitution because the APC is factionalised. We have this one that is called Reformed APC.

Many people have defected from the APC as a result of the faction within the party, especially in Kaduna.

“In Kaduna we have three factions of the party, we have APC Akida, Restoration Group and Government House faction and that is the reason for my decamping.

“I am appealing to well meaning Nigerians to intervene in this matter. I have not been officially informed that my seat has been declared vacant, but as soon as I get official communication, I shall go to my people who elected me and we will take appropriate legal and constitutional steps to address the issue” Kwaturu said.

Kwaturu also accused Governor Nasir El-Rufai of allegedly masterminding the declaration.
Meanwhile, the house has unanimously elected the former chairman House Committee on Information, Hon. Nuhu Goro Shadalafiya, as the new Deputy Speaker.

Shadalafiya represents Kagarko local constituency in the assembly.

POLITICS – Latest report as Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, has accused those against the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari of fuelling the herdsmen crisis.

While speaking in an interview with Tribune, he also stated that his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), had delivered on all the promises they made.

His words: “We found out that in Benue State, in particular, some people facing corruption charges are the ones that have armed militia. Is it not interesting that Terkula that was arrested is actually a government appointee? And since his arrest, these killings have gone down.

The suspects arrested for killing those priests were not Fulani herdsmen; they are militia men from Benue State.

“Now we have politicians, who are afraid that if Buhari is reelected, they would end up in jail and they are now fuelling this herdsmen crisis, especially in Benue State.”

When asked how APC intended to convince Nigerians to reelect the party in the 2019 general election, he said: “You see, we have delivered all promises we made.”

He went on to highlight details of the present administration’s fight against insurgency, noting: “Today, there is relative peace. We have been able to recover all territories and today, no single inch of Nigerian territory is under the Boko Haram control.

“Yes, there have been suicide bombings; that is what terrorism is all about. A couple of weeks ago in the US, we saw terrorist attack. About a month or two months ago, we saw what happened in Texas. Terrorists killed many children. This is not a sign of renewed threat; rather, it is a sign of desperation and weakness.

“Look at the regularity it used to occur and now, it is all about intelligence gathering. Yes you would talk about herdsmen-farmer clashes. Was it not something we inherited? The first farmers-herders clash was in 1947,

even before Nigeria became independent, but over the years, we have been able to manage it. What has aggravated the farmers-herders clash today is the government’s position, its stand on fighting corruption.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) approved the registration of 23 new political parties.

Many Nigerians berated President Muhammadu Buhari when he publicly revealed he was unaware Inspector-General of Police Ibrahim Idris had flouted his order to relocate to Benue State at a time herdsmen were on rampage.

But it appears presidential ignorance about major cabinet happenings is not peculiar to Nigeria: a brief recording made public on Monday by NBC has shown that President Donald Trump was unaware of former White House staffer and TV celebrity Omarosa Manigault Newman’s sacking in December 2017.

Omarosa, the former ‘Apprentice’ contestant who became a White House aide, was one of Trump’s loyalists, but she has now turned round to say Trump, "doesn’t even know what’s happening in his White House”.

NBC’s ‘Today’ programme played a brief recording, released by Newman, of a private conversation with President Donald Trump after she was fired.

In it, Trump claimed to be oblivious of her dismissal by Chief of Staff, John Kelly, and expressed regrets at the news.

“Omarosa? Omarosa what’s going on? I just saw on the news that you’re thinking about leaving? What happened?” Trump had said, apparently unaware she had already been fired.

“General Kelly — General Kelly came to me and said that you guys wanted me to leave,” Omarosa replied.

“No… I. I — Nobody even told me about it,” Trump is heard saying. “You know they run a big operation, but I didn’t know it. I didn’t know that. Goddamn it. I don’t love you leaving at all.”

Trump responded to the revelation in typically vitriolic fashion, branding Omarosa “wacky” and a “lowlife”.

“Wacky Omarosa, who got fired 3 times on the Apprentice, now got fired for the last time. She never made it, never will. She begged me for a job, tears in her eyes, I said Ok. People in the White House hated her. She was vicious, but not smart. I would rarely see her but heard really bad things,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Nasty to people & would constantly miss meetings & work. When Gen. Kelly came on board he told me she was a loser & nothing but problems. I told him to try working it out, if possible, because she only said GREAT things about me - until she got fired!

I disagree with this post, it’s unfortunate that Nigerians still carry out fake news just because of the hatred they have for the president, this is a new age, news should be backed up with proof, how the president be angry at a decision that came out of his office, besides this is a matter that concern a treat to democracy every president that has respect for democracy like Buhari will do same.

The Presidency on Monday said the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, would still remain the running mate of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in an interview with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The presidential spokesman said the victories recorded by the ruling All Progressives Congress in legislative elections held in three states over the weekend were indications that victory is certain for the Buhari/Osinbajo presidential ticket in 2019.

That is what I don't understand about PDP supporters. If it isn't done, they would be the first to shout "show us just one thing Nigerians have gained from Buhari". If it is done, their cries would be "he's doing it for the sake of elections".

It pains then when their ability to complain is taken away from them through the delivery of good governance.
