overhypedsteve:
these are the kind of pictures that we want to see. Gentlemen there you have it, The Nigerian Backed Intervention in the Gambia have led to the removal of the Gambian Dictator Mr Yahaya Jammeh and for this reason the Gambian people cannot hold back their joy as they wave the colors of our nationhood. There is nothing anybody can say about it. Gambia is a textbook example of how to remove a dictator peacefully.
Not necessarily.

Can't be applied anywhere.

You're missing the point! Tell me why the otherwise excellent Rooivalk which has been around for almost 20 years isn't selling and the 3 year old Rudra with its Hind role is highly sought after.
Marketing was stopped until the helicopter's deployment to the DRC.

The reason the Rooivalk never received orders was because of the SANDF budget cuts and operational usage.

Btw,S Africans I have news for you. India will soon in 6 years at the latest overtake you and be a major arms exporter. Their products aren't only cost effective, top quality and indigenous but fill a very real role warfighting role.
For proof of this look no further than the Rudra. Its meant to be a combi gunship and carry a half section with a rear ramp.

Still relatively new its last tests were done in early 2013. Already its selling and an African country is seeking a coproduction agreement. You guys have a top quality gunship in a crowded field fighting for sales with Hinds,Havocs,Tigers,Apaches, Kamovs and even Apaches. Point being? The Rudra is what armies want! If you guys had gone for a Rooivalk light model like the AH 6 or Hughes 530 with greater capacity than these models but a correspondingly lesser price tag than the 25-30 mn$ a piece for the standard Rooivalk you'd have had success.
I hate to say it but I doubt you'll get anything beyond a purchase probe in this market.
The Rooivalk was developed or exists because there's was and still a need for it.

The price tag of the Rooivalk is unknown but said to be cheaper than the Apache.

Those upgraded light utility helicopters will never fill the role of heavy attack helicopters.

Nemesis you have any ideas on the main gun of a the German army Puma IFV?
It's a 30mm revolver gun.

Used on the Mantis air defence system. It is able to fire programmed ammunition such as the tungsten pellets filled AHEAD ammunition.

One of the most advanced guns mounted on an IFV currently.

wots ur led-150 system all about
It is an active protection system for vehicles combining soft and hard kill capabilities.

The hard kill capability means the system is able to counter incoming kinetic munition(Anti-tank missiles, RPGs, Tank rounds etc) by destroying them down with the Denel dynamics Mogoose missiles metres away from the vehicle.

Similar to the Trophy system on the Israeli Merkeva main battle tanks.

These systems increase the survivability of vehicles and it's crew in an operational area littered with ATGMs.

A few countries South Africa being one of them possess this technology.

off topic :ISIS has release a video of a T-90 which turret was penetrated ,after being hit with an ATGM which cause ammo cook-off.here is a screen shot
Denel like in the late 90s(when the UAV market was still dominated by a few countries) is again fast asleep!!

Proliferation of active protection systems is inevitable.

Main battle tanks can't absorb modern ATGMs hits. This should have galvanized Denel and Saab to invest massively into to the LED-150 system and marketing it more aggressively.

Either way, the term Commando would be incorrect.

Frankly, there is only one set of Commandos who still exist and they are in the service of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.

And they only just slip into the ambit of "SOF"
Not really.

Some unit is organized into "commandos".

We are well aware the Tejas should replace the MIG-21, but doesn't the AMCA signal the death of the Tejas?

With the AMCA you might get and F-16 E/F, Gripen E/F, Advanced Super-Hornet or MIG-35. So, where then does the Tejas fit in the overall force structure?
Sovereign capability over actual operational requirements.

Nemesis2u,been meaning to ask:
-what will the Rafale do the Su 30 can't or won't? The IAF wants 2 squadrons and I thought both were deep strike air superiority FSBs? Or did I miss smth?
-what's the maintenance of the Su really like? Is she as service hungry as everyone says? I saw recently the flight line availability was only 50% set to rise to 60%?!
Damnnnnn!
In short the SU-30 takes the fight deep into enemy territory.

The Rafale is a medium fighter.

Hi all.

I recently found these photos of what appears to be a Ratel with a very unusual gun-turret. Looks to be much larger than a 90mm, perhaps a 100mm or 105mm? Any relation to the iklwa?

As I have not seen this variant before I was wondering if some of you Saffer okes could shed some light on it. Apologies if it's been posted before.

I assume it's an export model by Denel or something, as the crew posing next to it in the second picture don't appear to be wearing SANDF uniforms.
It is not a Ratel.

It's the SIBMAS! They are both made from the same prototype.

Someone in the future will ask a similar question regarding the Badger and the Rosomak IFV. grin grin grin

More Rubbish!

The MI-24 is unofficially known as the Flying Tank, not a flying IFV.

Unlike an IFV, the MI-24 carries 8 troops as a secondary role, not a primary role. It is a gunship, an attack helicopter as it's primary role.

The MI-35 is the world's most heavily armed, most heavily armoured attack helicopter. It is a Tank killer, designed to support the SU-25 in combat.

I'm not referring to largeness of any helicopter. The stats show the MI-35m produces more power than the Rooivalk. The Rooivalk cannot magically have a better performance. You can't cheat physics.

The Rooivalk carries a weak 20mm gun with an effective range of only 2 Km. While the MI-35m carries a twin barrel 23mm with an over 5km effective firing range.

The MI-35m can also carry 16 Air-to-ground missiles. Has the latest navigational suite, target sight system, location range finder and the latest laser range finder.

The fact is, the MI-35m, MI-28NE and the Apache attack helicopters are currently by a long shot the most advanced helicopters in Africa. The Rooivalk comes in at a very distant 4th.
Again that's his a nickname!

It performs well at sea level conditions! Why do you think the Indians are pursuing that attack helicopter with better hot and high performance. It isn't cheating anything but you failing to comprehend things.

The F-2 round is 20×139mm this means the round is longer with flatter trajectory. 250m to beyond 5km.

The GSh-23 round is 23×115mm this means the round is bigger in diameter then the 20×139mm but shorter.

This F-2 has a higher muzzle velocity now explain to us! What does this mean?

The Hind makes strafing runs similar to fixed wing aircraft.

Again the missiles the helicopter carries exposes her to danger. Unlike missiles the Hellfire with enables Apache to fully take advantage of it's N.O.E capabilities.

Also explain to me what is "location range finder and the latest laser range finder"? grin grin grin grin Dude just say it you are augubugubu!
