adesbaba: Hmmn...am so grateful for the reply sir....I optioned Calgary cos I felt its cheaper to settle there due to cheaper cost of living ,buying house in future n the likes...compared with Toronto where cost of living is huge.....so I felt probably one could get Finance/bank jobs too in Calgary...
As per the management trainee...I have done much work on scotiabank ,CIBC ,TDbank n RBC programs n I saw that they have something like our own graduate trainee programme here where you choose either corporate finance, wealth mgt ,n the likes with trainee fr 12-18 months ....and also internships....how do u see this My bro, to be honest the ball is in your court. Increasing your chances in your chosen career or settling for cheaper province, house etc. Dont get me wrong, calgary is a great city with opportunities. Mortgage prices in ontario is on d average 400 -700k on the average, mayne excluding Toronto. This is not dissimilar to Calgary. Please do your research and be more informed so that you can make informed decisions. Weigh the opportunity cost - alternative of higher chances in the financial sector fore gone for doing a job u may not like and/or barely making enough for your mortgage because people told you it is a cheaper city? Is it enough for this trade-off? Do the maths and then draw your priorities...career / cost of living / house in the order that best suits your interest. As per your last question, check for the location/province of such programs when they're advertised, that should give you a clue. I'm not familiar with that tbh. |

adesbaba: Hello sir,For someone with MSC Financial managemt from the U.K...and just 2 years Bank experience from Nigeria(fund transfer, teller) and would love to build a career in banking industry in CA,,,,would you advice settling in Calgary or Toronto... and most banking roles seems to be Financial advisor ,aren't they other roles someone can get n grow into a management position(e.g in Nigeria bank ww move from Grad trainee to BO to SBO to Manager to Exec Director)..Do banks like scotiabank,TDBank n co av such
@Oga Black buddy... Pls answer too
Thanks If you're not getting hired as a Management trainee in one of these banks, then you must possess a skill relevant to the bank. Easiest way to navigate this is to think about the guys that work in Bank Head offices in Nigeria, what skills do they possess? Risk management, audit, Data analysis/MIS etc. If you're selling yourself as a fund transfer or teller, then you may have to settle for Financial advisor as a means of getting in, and then rising through the ranks. PS: Banking hub + maximum opportunities in this field is Toronto... |

cc @Guitarlife The Module The Introduction to Data Science module is delivered entirely online so students can earn their certificate without disrupting their lives. Students who successfully complete Unit I earn a certificate and an invitation to enroll in Unit II. Those who successfully complete Unit II earn an overall certificate. Students have the opportunity to complete either unit of the module with honors. Scientific Computing and Python for Data Science In Unit I, students gain a comprehensive introduction to scientific computing, Python, and the related tools data scientists use to succeed in their work. Successful completion of Unit I is a required prerequisite for enrollment in Unit II. Machine Learning and Statistical Analysis In Unit II, students develop machine learning and statistical analysis skills through hands-on practice with open-ended investigations of real-world data. Students can expect to work with authentic public data sets from organizations like the NHS, or anonymized data on credit card defaults. This unit has a heavy emphasis on creative use of the tools of data science to solve problems from multiple perspectives. The Requirements This is a true introduction to data science and can accomodate beginners with the right amount of foundational knowledge. It does not require you to have any prior degrees. https://wqu.org/programs/data-science?utm_source=DS+Module+042019&utm_campaign=f8c006d570-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_03_05_09_21&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f3a823269e-f8c006d570-70775723 |

canadaman18: User support from what I know is not as strict interview wise so I wouldn’t bother with Leetcode or CTCI. Best to just focus on learning a bit about the product you’ll be supporting but I’m not an expert in the area so I can’t say for certain .
If you have any kind of technical background and some certifications I don’t think it’ll be too hard getting an entry level IT job in Ontario. might take a few months of looking though
At the end of the day it depends what you’re passionate about , if you’re passionate about it you’ll be good at it and if you’re good at it and pray and trust God ,there are jobs I would appreciate you let the guys know that it is not an easy task to come to Canada and change your field and get a job. I know a lot of Nigerians don't want to continue with the job roles/ fields they performed in Naija. I have heard this from many with Banking/branch experience. Many recruiters and hiring managers look intently at your previous experience, especially if you're foreign trained, before considering you for an interview. They wont understand why a previous "banking officer" or 5 years all of a sudden is touting expertise in Machine learning, OOP and Web frameworks. If you're self trained in programming or other IT fields, you have to show remarkable expertise and properly represent your projects and achievements in your profile/resume. Also ask why they should consider a foreign trained individual for entry level positions, when most companies have co-op/internship programs and Graduate leadership training programs that get guys straight from school. Most have student loans, and companies will prefer to give them Canadian trained individuals priority so that they can pay back and also contribute to the economy by way of taxes. PS: I'm speaking for IT and allied job roles, as this is what i know about. |

Guitarlife: hi guys Iam currently in Calgary, I came in to Canada 2 weeks ago but I have found the IT market here is not so robust for me as an application support analyst.
I have registered for the alberta health card but yet to get it, as a FSW/express entry am considering moving to Ontario, any problem with that ? MY SIN printout carries Alberta aaddress wont this be a problem ?
I am currently staying with a friend here in Calgary so if anyone has moved from Alberta to ontario or from any other province to Ontario please advise me. To make this move, you have to consider the your pocket cos you need to have enough money for rent and other sundry expenses. Moving into roles you have no previous experience in is usually a challenge, except you're coming in fresh from College as a GLP or Co-op student. I thought your plan was to take any job for now, whilst you're reading for your analytics courses. |

thebosstrevor: According to a Brookings Institution study published in 2009, if a person graduates from high school, works a fulltime job, and waits until twenty-one to get married and have children, his or her chance of succeeding in life and becoming a member of the middle class rises to 76 percent. If a person doesn’t finish high school, doesn’t marry, and has a baby before the age of twenty-one, his or her chance of becoming poor soars to 74 percent.
The Brookings researchers seem to have understood that the breakdown of the black family has been the main driver of the chronic wealth gap between whites and blacks over the past five decades. The lack of intact families among blacks leads to a lack of education and jobs, which translates into higher rates of crime and government dependency among blacks.
You don’t have to be a scientist to see that a child born to an unmarried single mother isn’t going to have a rosy future in life. Like Ben Shapiro fondly says: "Facts don't care about feelings". |

DexterousOne: All you said up there is captured in my second sentence about "some small strides made"
But it does not change the fact that Nigeria is a very misogynist and sick society
If it wasn't, a lot of women won't be embracing these ideals the way and manner they are embracing it.
If you, or you mum or your aunt has received the short end of the stick, you would understand better
The onus is on you Nigerian men to adjust and compromise, or the Nigerian society will blow in 10 years, because the women these days are not ready for crap anymore, and despite me being a man, I support it 100 % My brother read up my comment and understand. Saying a country is Misogynistic means it is systematic and ingrained in their constitution to deliberately be strongly prejudiced against women. That is not the case. Saying Nigeria is a misogynistic country is putting them on the same pedestal as Arab countries who bar women from driving, exposing their faces, travelling alone etc. As I said in my post, we have certain discriminatory cultural elements in Nigeria, but the country isn't Misogynistic. mi·sog·y·nist Dictionary /məˈsäjənəst/Submit noun 1. a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women. synonyms: woman-hater, anti-feminist, male chauvinist, male supremacist, chauvinist, sexist; |

DexterousOne: Nigeria is still a highly misogynist country
Though it has made some strides in recent decades
But I'm 2019, women.are still threatened to be thrown out of their "matrimonial home" and in some cases thrown out.
Many other despicable things done against women are still in place. I dont agree with your assertion. You can say Nigeria has many cultural components that may be discriminatory against women(which is changing fast like the ability of women to own property in some parts of the east). We don't have laws that enable gender supression/discrimination and I dare to say in civil service and private firms, there is equal opportunity employment and access to services. Let's not be a part of those "progressive leftists" who have this victimhood mentality and give labels to everyone and everything they don't agree with. Nigerians won't put their ass on the line to fight for what they know is injustice, that is the hypocrisy this thread seeks to expose -the inconvenient truth. |

I may have missed this one. Always say NO to Victim blaming... justwise: This is not a convincing argument especially when it comes to sexual harassment, you can not pick and choose the level of sexually harassment to tackle.
Was the metoo movement focused on those sex attackers on the street?
I'm even worried that you showed up to support him even when he condemned both protesting on the street and metoo movement.
So sexual harassment victims choose to be sexually abused because they did not say no?
The same way some morally bankrupted Nigerians will condemn EFCC for arresting yahoo yahoo boys rather than big political figures but these crooks steal their way to a political position. |

DexterousOne: And you feel "conservative principles" are the best principles? It is relative. Also remember i said that we should feel free to pick and choose those progressive ideologies that have been proven to work, and discard the others that are divisive. Thinking about this another way: Have you ever thought of why divorce/separation rates among Nigerians living abroad are far greater than those families from south east asia(india, pakistan, china) also living abroad? This is partly because they preserve their culture and conservative traditions. Disclaimer: This is not to say that they are in happier marriages than their African counterparts. |
Travel › Re: My Letter To Nigerians Living And Studying In Western Countries by mikkyphp(m): 11:12pm On Feb 11, 2019 |
justwise: Your choice of moniker explains why you support sexual harassment no need for the ad-hominem. He is only in support of conservative principles, without it being unduly diluted by post-modernist ideologies. I agree we should pick and choose and throw the rest of the so-called "progressive" ideologies away. I also dont think he supports sexual harassment, just that he feels the motive for the yaba march was insincere, being that a greater proportion of harassment are being perpetuated in corporate environments. My stand is in support of the Yaba march, and also in support for all injustice to both men and women |
Travel › Re: My Letter To Nigerians Living And Studying In Western Countries by mikkyphp(m): 4:56am On Feb 09, 2019 |
@wetdick I kinda get your underlying reasoning: being against the whole post-modernist 3rd wave feminism, neo-marxists ideology interwoven with racial and sexual intersectionality and identity politics currently going on in the West. I also understand the entitlement some Nigerians who schooled abroad have, as well as our nack to embrace foreign ideologies without any filter.
However, castigating the Yaba anti-sexual harassment protest will only lead you into a rabbit hole. It is a social ill that has plagued society for as long as I can remember. That and the corporate sexual harassments by big Ogas can both be tackled in parallel. |

I've been following this thread since I submitted my Permanent Residency Application.
I studied chemical engineering. I have an MSc in Chemical Engineering. But my only experience was internship in ExxonMobil. I'm currently in Banking (1 Year Experience).
I do want to find my way back into Engineering. My initial plan was to enroll into a diploma course once I land while doing any job I can lay my hands on to pay the bills.
However, I just got married and wifey is carrying. So this plan isn't very feasible anymore. I'd appreciate any suggestion and different perspective from seniors.

Guitarlife: I skipped this in my previous response, I have over 5 years of banking experience this includes exposure to banking operations, marketing, investments and IT.
I stumbled on a free course online by a professor at Georgia Tech which concentrates on a machine learning path for an investment/hedge funds specialisation and having gone through the curriculum, it seems I will be concentrating on financial services sector as a Data Analytics Scientist also because of my background in banking. I think this will count as a linear progression in career path.
If anyone needs a link to this material please PM me. It a gentle introduction to Machine learning for financial services and I think its not bad at all. Look through this: https://www.udemy.com/python-for-finance-investment-fundamentals-data-analytics/ |
