Oh bro its nice to meet you, are you doing a diploma on an Msc ?
Are you in Canada ?

I have a background in Electrical Engineering (B.sc and M.sc) I am brushing up my statistics and probability/information theory knowledge.
I am looking at this path below, can you let me know how far you have gone and if I could learn a thing or 2 from you ?

Core Java for covering Basic Programming and OOP concepts (Concluded)
Java for Data structures and Algorithms(in Progress)
Statistics / Probability brush up(in Progress)
Intro to Data Science with Python

Do a Kaggle project at this point and document it on GIT hub

Machine learning for Data Science and Analytics
Deep Learning - www.deeplearningbook.org Part I and Part II

Do a second Kaggle project (Will start looking for junior Machine learning/ data science roles at this point)

SQL and Relational Database concepts (I Have a strong knowledge of this due to current work requirement)
NOSQL
Hadoop and Mapreduce

Do a third Kaggle project and blow from there. grin grin grin
Let me add this, I am self learning. I am teaching myself all these concepts with Udemy videos and text books .
Very impressive.

If i may ask, do you also have plans of what you will be doing for money while you're studying hard to accomplish your ambition?
Any reason why you chose Calgary?

My 2 cents to you will be to focus on learning the core stats! As for python, focus only on the data related libraries -( Numpy, Scipy, Pandas,Matplotlib, Seaborn and of course Scikit learn) for python.

Your java skills will come in handy if you plan as a data scientist to convert your Analytics models into Data products.

Analytics is the ability to use quantitative data to glean actionable insights, shape decisions and outcome, as well as forecast future variables.

Remember: Data science is the process of formulating a quantitative question that can be answered with data, collecting and cleaning the data, analyzing the data and communicating the answer to the question to a relevant audience. This audience usually are business individuals who do not understand computer jargons. Hence, domain knowledge (e.g Financial service, Healthcare, telecoms etc) and soft skills are required because you would need to be able to understand the problem in order to tackle it and formulate the answer. The answer needs to be communicated using the industry/business parlance. Consider this when choosing your kaggle projects.

Good luck in your journey.

Please as the year is almost rounding up, ignore any landlord that will want to talk you into not reporting your rent as your expense just because he or she does not want to pay income tax.

Keep your tax report straight. Moreover you may even shortchange yourself by not reporting that expense.
My landlord did this. Please tell me more

Great arguments here even though i didn't relish the name calling and ad-hominem by esteemed veterans, using anecdotal extremes as general statements e.t.c
I get @Guiterlife 's point, but i dont agree with many nuances in his argument. Also a lot of us should also be willing to leave our ideological echo-chamber and welcome new ideas.

People exist first as individuals whose values are shaped by familial experiences, culture, religious doctrines and social constructs. We as Africans always seem to be quick to adopt cultures foreign to us cos we see it as "progressive". Many of these "progressive" doctrines and post-mordernist ideologies who believe gender is a social construct, have led to the erosion of traditional values and the hike in divorce, depression and suicide rates. Lots of asians on the other hand, remain tightly knit because regardless of the society they find themselves, they always try to preserve and maintain their "culture"- way of life.

This is by no means me saying we shouldn't adapt to the nuances of our new environment - heck when the financial realities hit you, you will know that all hands(man +woman) needs to be on deck to make things on the family front work.

Value divergence is fundamental to the the cause of strife in most marriages of immigrant families.

There is no formula.

Marriage is all about constant negotiations and compromises between 2 people working towards a common vision/goal. One defers to the other and vice versa depending on who has the higher proficiency per time. Every marriage is different. Negotiate for what works for you. A recipe for discontentment and depression is agreeing to a position that goes against what you stand for - your values.

This is my 2cents for anyone coming to Canada and not sure of which province/city to settle - Please dont make your decision primarily on cost of living. You were given PPR based on your education, skills ans work experience. When you get a job that fits your skillset, you will be able to afford a decent standard of living. Remember if you move to a "so-to-speak" "cheap" city, with the downside that it has very few vacancies for your skill set, you will end up finishing the Naira you converted to CAD no matter how low the cost of living in that city is. If you now decide to take a survival job, you might get stuck in that cycle for years because it affords you little time for intensive job search, and you continue at those kind of jobs because you have bills to pay. This decision, albeit, difficult, is a fact of life. In life we make choices, and there are opportunity costs. It is human nature to always want to play safe, but be reminded that: "with great risk comes great reward".

"Man, know thyself" - Oracle of delphy

1. Skillset/ Work experience, field of study: Choose a city based on the job propensities. oil & gas and engineering =(plenty jobs in AL, NS) while IT, Finance and allied jobs =(ON - Toronto,Waterloo, GTA). For other fields, please do your research on provinces.

With No 1 above settled, things like family, schools for kids etc will be sorted easily.

Caveat: the above is my opinion, not a statement of fact

you could have said you disagree instead of saying not true. What i wrote was my experience and it was not even up to 10mins. The interview process too in Nigeria is typically less than 10mins. So i know what i am saying, its just to let whoever wants to apply not feel entitled because you are a canadian PR.
On point!
how much work experience in canada is required to show sufficient ties as a PR to apply for US Visa?

Hello house, please I have a question.
we are a family of three and we just got our passports from Ghana. my baby's passport is a US passport which was not stamped but has the COPR attached (from previous posts on this forum, I learnt that is the usual practice). my question is will it pose a problem for my infant leaving Nigeria with a US passport that contains no valid visa, especially with Nigerian and Ethiopian immigration since we plan to travel with Ethiopian Airlines.
No issues. You are good to go. US citizens can enter canada without visa

Hi Guys, thanks for all this valuable info on this thread. I’m looking to move to Canada mid next year but I’m having difficulties deciding on which city to live in. Hubby is a pharmacist and I’m an accountant and one of my criteria for a city to live in would be where pharmaceutical head offices and finance firms are situated so hubby and I can have great career prospects. Toronto seems like the easy choice but it’s quite expensive and I’d prefer another city with the same criteria I’m looking for. I’m also looking for a city that’s warm. I really don’t like the cold and will like to avoid it as much as possible.
how expensive is expensive? sometimes, you may need to make the best decision for yourself per time. You can live in Toronto or surrounding cities to maximize your opportunities...North york, Brampton, Mississauga, Scarborough...but dont make decisions solely on cost!

Thanks
Please note recruiters here like to see 3 things:

1. Work Experience in your chosen field(in your case: Big Data/ Analytics/ Data Science)
2. Relevant Industry
3. Specific skills and or Tools e.g SQL, Python, R, Machine learning, Tableau, KNIME

Recruiters will contact you based on these. When they call you they will need you to demonstrate expertise and talk about projects you worked on. Also expect more of that and technical tests in the face to face interviews.

mikkyphp thanks for this wonderful information.
-did you eventually incorporate?
-was it a better option, comparing the take-home pay with T4?
No. I got a better full time employment, so I later declined their offer.

As per negotiation, for INC, negotiate much higher because you handle your benefits, tax etc yourself. T4 is a normal contract employment where statutory deductions(tax etc) are done before you get your final pay.

Merovingian:
Please can someone explain accepting contract job as Incorporated vs T4. I heard incorporated gets paid higher but won't you be remitting same taxes and deductibles as T4, coupled with all the paperwork you will have to do yourself? Read somethings about incorporated but still not understanding the concept with terms like PSB of 44.5% tax, the salary don finish now. Which of the two is better and why? Thanks
I got this from a recruiter trying to get me on a contract engagement.

How to Incorporate

The fastest and most cost effective way to incorporate is to apply directly on the business website of Industry Canada. The fee can be charged to a credit card and the applicant will usually receive their company documents and corporation number within a couple of hours up to 24 hours.
Go to www.corporationscanada.ic.gc.ca
Select English
Next page > In the middle column first option is incorporate a business
Next page > Choose "Online" option

Please note: In the middle column you will see a link for "guide to federal incorporation"; you may use this for reference * Next page > Once you have chosen the online option you will now be on a different website (http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/cgi-bin/sc_mrksv/corpdir/corpFiling/register.cgi?lang=e)

As the next few steps you need to "Register a new user" and then "Go to Online Filing" and just follow the PROMPTS

Things you need to keep in mind while filling out the application form:
Indicate the Minimum amount of directors at 1, and maximum 10
Be sure to release Type A and B share -> Do NOT write any restrictions and simply accept the default settings
Your business address should be your home address

GST Number

You will also need a GST number, which is handled through the site, but that is not required immediately. (You'll want it in your first few weeks on the contract... its free to obtain one and not necessary until you hit 30K in revenues)

Payroll Setup

In order for us to set up the payroll you will need a business bank account from a Canadian bank. However, this you may take your time to complete; I suggest you provide me with it before you start, so you can get paid.

Once you incorporate, please take your incorporation information to your bank, and open a business account in the name of your incorporation. YOU WILL NOT BE PAID into your personal bank account, and WILL REQUIRE a business account to be opened. Once done, please ask your bank for an official 'direct deposit'; form that shows the bank address, and the bank account number associated with your account.

Incorporated Consultants, advantages:
Higher net income; no regular tax deductions
Possible tax advantages
Greater access to capital
Limited liability
Business credibility
Separate legal entity
Help legitimize business expenses
Increase success in response to current trends that see more clients selecting Incorporated consultants over non-incorporated consultants

Hello AbujaNIV / LagosNIV

I have already filled out the DS 160 form for my wife but I am wondering why it doesn't have the option of previous work / travel. It only asks the present and the next page is already security background. I was wondering if I have missed something that that page does not show up. And I have been backtracking my application here and there but even the educational background has not been asked as well. I cannot proceed unless I am sure its not important anymore. May you help me? Thank you!

For those who landed and stayed temporarily in an Airbnb apartment, i am wondering, what address did you fill at the airport for your PR card to be delivered to when ready?

thanks.
