It was an improper statement by the ambassador. Insensitive also but It is true that most crimes that are publicized involve the name of a southerner unfortunately. Yet when I travel and carry the Nigerian passport nobody checks to see that I am from Kano or Katsina they see the Naija label. We must continue to speak against 419'ers and thieves that give us all a bad name southern or not.

I also think that the argument that southerners are forced to 419 or other illicit activities internationally because northerners have looted the country is absolutely ludicrous. I know for a fact that there are southerners in London and the US from privileged families (that arguably also looted) that still do credit card fraud and 419. It should be an issue the southern society should confront head on to understand why youths embark on these sorts of activities regardless of status.

Aisha, It's good to avoid heated debates like this, but I will not lay idle in this forum and watch people spread malicious lies and concoted information about my heritage. Kazaure has said it all. No Nigerian, North or South benefits in any way when fraud or 419 is done under our passports. The Foreigner does not care if we are from the North or south, he sees us the same. It is a problem we all must tackle. But I believe that like every other problem, it should start from the grassroots. 419 is a predominantly southern thing- no denial here. It's fight must therefore start from the family. People who know that such perpetrators must advise against it.
The analogy of placing the brunt of the issue on the doorstep of the North- saying years of maladmistration by successive governments has pushed people till today in commiting fraudulent acts is a biased statement and sparks no truth. i don't quite dig this your theory of "your space" being a defining factor of co-habitation. everybody has such periods where they w'anna preserve "their space"; it ain't a permanent thingy - one sec, you w'anna have people around you, the next you w'anna go solo; it happens to everybody !

but when you talk about co-habitation, which simply translates to living together (in our instance here) as spouses - the "space" thing doesn't count. why ? c'os its simply something you got without even having to ask for it.

it all boils down to how much you and your partner like each other, how much you understand each other, how much you can tolerate each other; when he/she's moving, in the last thing on your mind's g'onna be how to work-out "your space" management ! i mean, we're not talking room-mates at school or stuff like that.
