samistry:Mercy Graves is an original character that isn't in the comics though. She was an animated character. The Perry White thing being Black is what I don't get. Maybe it is one of Hollywood's racist joke, in the sense that a Black man is a white. Mercy Graves being Asian is what I felt she was in the Superman Animated Series. |
itscalebmark:Hey, if you are a black person, don't follow these white supremacists who are trying to vilify a genuine course by black Americans for the right to live in a fair society that doesn't demean anyone. You can use other words but not Woke. You have no idea what the term truly means. Sure, the new SUPERMAN film is cringe and tried hard to separate itself from Zack Snyder that it ended up being very childish and looking cheap. |
BlackManta:Wasn't that Russian guy in BvS meant to be Firefly or something? |
SMUAG:Don't get me wrong, David Corenswet is a good Superman/Clark Kent. He is a better actor than Henry Cavill. I feel Cavill needs to start working on his performances, and of course choosing the roles he plays if he is interested in being an actor than an action star. However, I felt SUPERMAN underutilized Corenswet. I suggest people go watch his audition tape for the role. That script shows why the guy is good, and that script really should have been used in the actual film. In the film, Corenswet was made to overreact. And I hate what they did with Ultraman. I hate the story actually. And I feel they really should have focused on the Israel/Palestine war that was in the film, lol. That should have being the subject matter of the film. James Gunn really had the right idea but execution was the issue. I feel he should have used Lex Luthor as a brainy mastermind lol, a real threat and kept Ultraman as Bizarro instead but used Bizarro to frame Superman. Perhaps have Bizarro dressed as Superman to level the "Israeli" country thus provoking global outrage and conversation and sorts, then have the film take the tone of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Dude, there is a way the story would have been that it would have killed any comparison that anyone would want to have. He already had a talented cast bar Martha and Jonathan Kent whom I hate lol. Also, there was no need for that Eve character. Jeez. Lex Luthor should be an existential threat to Superman not some Hot fool. |
Hohenheim:Good for them lol. |
pu7pl3:Not everyone reads comics. And speaking of comics, there are issues where the character is better written. If you are talking about comics, how about the animated series and films where Superman is presented in serious light? Let's talk about the CW Superman. And that wasn't a movie mind you. James Gunn is better writing obscure characters. Listen I have no problem with the portrayal of Superman, Lois, Lex Luthor, Guy or Mister Terrific, I have issues with the story and the costumes. Sure the acting was over the top sometimes but that's not on the actors. |
SMUAG:The scene where Clark and Lois were having a real conversation was good though but I prefer the original that Corenswet auditioned with. In the actual film, the guy ended up over acting. |
SMUAG:The longer it goes, no serious actor who cares about their career will want to be in CBMs any more. SUPERMAN was an insult to one's Intelligence, and not like one is that smart. I couldn't take the film seriously neither did I find it funny. The suits itself didn't help. |
Nickshrapnel:I'm not talking about screen appearance but actually having an effect on the story. I'm not talking about the Maxwell Lord suits. Then again, why would a space cop be a hero for hire? The Superman suit is ridiculous and not aesthetically pleasing to look at. Heck, you can't take the character serious if he is dressed in that. |
How come no one is talking about the costumes or is it just me? I can't be the only one who finds the costume silly especially in contemporary times. They have to change that thing before Justice League hits. I believe James Gunn will crush it with a Justice League movie though. That's the kind of thing he excels in. Team up films. Superman would have worked better if it was not a Superman solo movie but a film that has Superman as a minor character. |
I think we are in an era where comic book movies are no longer the hype again. Marvel killed it with Infinity War and Endgame. I believe they could have ended big screen blockbuster marvel films with that and focused on Disney + to continue their Multiverse Saga with only Spiderman No Way Home, Deadpool and Wolverine and the upcoming two Avengers films being the blockbuster releases in the saga. For James Gunn DCU, he could have set up the whole thing before making a Superman movie. And with what I saw, I think he was better off not making a Superman movie. Coming from someone who loves Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad. |
My thoughts on James Gunn's SUPERMAN: The writing really could have been better. Gunn has written better stories with heart and fun,but SUPERMAN wasn't it. The movie tried to be everything at once, same mistake Zack Snyder made with BvS. The writing wasted a good cast. One issue I had with the film was pacing, tone and stake. Scenes aren't allowed to breathe. We don't know the character Dynamics, we are just thrown into scenes and with lots of exposition to explain it. The krypto character was unnecessary. Like Jesus, is this film meant for a general audience or strictly for kids? A lot of jokes don't land or felt forced. And seriously, what's it with the Lex Luthor girlfriend thing? That looks silly. I mean it really cheapened who the villain is if he was to keep around someone like that in his business space. And the way he was exposed, I mean, really? Jesus Christ, Gunn couldn't have come up with a better investigative journalist arc for both Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane than have Lois teaming up with vigilantes when she could be out looking for the scoop of the century? This is the problem I had with MOS, putting Lois Lane in places a journalist normally wouldn't be in and not having the journalist act like a journalist. Superman and Lois got Lois way better. The actress is fantastic but the story failed her just like Amy Adams. Then, let's talk about the costume. Jesus, I see nowhere it's explained why all the suits look second grade in the movie. I get that Max Lord is funding the Justice Gang but why is Green Lantern not in GLC uniform? Besides, GL is supposed to be a cop not a vigilante for hire. And the Metamorpho arc was just contrived. Why was he working for Lex? How did Lex get to kidnap his kid? I loved Nicolas Hoult's Lex Luthor. It's something I thought Jesse Eisenberg would be in BvS. However I felt he started to over-act towards the end. And the story wasn't fair to him by not giving him a motivation aside whatever it was they gave him. Again, I hated how they started the film. I get they were going for a James Bond-esque opening but jeez, there was no build up to keep tension that the stakes were high for SUPERMAN. The cinematography or the color scheme and CGI was really second rate. I mean, Superman returns had better CGI and that was 2006. SUPERMAN looked more like a CW episode than the CW series even did ironically. Lastly, they better change that suit. And recast the Kents. Jonathan Kent looks like a guy who worked with the Italian mafia and retired to live on a farm. Martha Kent looks like a racist grandma who used to own slaves back in the day. |
Xavier5:I actually doubt it will gross that. I could be wrong though. So far it underperformed internationally. The international box office hasn't been good to American films lately. |
Hello fam! Been a while. Mhen, I haven't visited Nairaland in years. What's up with you all? How's the weather treating you all? Missed this thread, mhen. How do you all see the Superman movie? |
Lh19:Nah. |
Kaycee7:My point exactly. There has to be a reason he would wear pants outside his trousers lol. |
itsADE:Trunks in the modern day? Eesh... don't know how to feel about that one, bro. |
Kaycee7:I am more excited for Nicolas Hoult. Not sure of Rachel Brosnahan. I get this innocent feel on her which isn't something I don't picture of a Lois Lane. I don't want another damsel in distress Lois Lane. More of the Erica Durance and Bitsie Tulloch Lois Lane will be appreciated. |
SMUAG:Same. I love the colors but the smooth feel of the crest is lost. I get this Batman sort of edginess to the symbol. |
SMUAG:True but bro, a lot of films have managed to flesh out characters while driving the plot. In the DCEU we really didn't get invested in the characters. So character focus isn't just for TV shows. I get that tv shows have a soft landing compared to films but the DCEU had a lot of flaws. I still don't understand what you mean by Henry was lame (as Superman) in MoS.. I guess you judging from the angle of Christopher Reeve's Superman, because from what I have come to know their are 100s of version or alteration of Superman out there and I don't think many of us have read up to 20 different versions for us to completely say he was lame in MoS... I think somebody answered this same question on MoS being lame/bad perfectly on Quora site and even gave the actual version that Henry Cavill's Superman was actually portraying. Maybe if I get hold of that excerpt (again) I will paste it here...Yea, true. I agree but a charismatic actor would have done better in MOS. I love Cavill as Supes and admit the writing wasn't that impressive but Cavill couldn't get us to connect with Clark or Superman. He was great in JL as he got more comfortable in the role. |
nani667:Omo, this is gangster. She for no talk. Then again, that's social media for you. |
SMUAG:The problem with the DCEU then was that it was too plot driven. It wasn't the dark tone or light tone. That was the misconception. It didn't have character moments that weren't reliant on just moving the plot but getting audiences to actually care about the characters. I didn't feel the love between Lois and Clark, we didn't even get to know Clark or Lex or Batman. Why Wonder Woman was liked was cause it had these moments. Same with the first Aquaman film. Look at The Boys for example, that show is dark and people love it. Cause it's character driven. Same with Gen V. Now, the mistake WB made was trying to make the Franchise like Marvel rather than correct the narrative style. Now, we have to agree that Zack Snyder's weakness is, he isn't good at fleshing a story that surrounds around characters. He is more of the aesthetic and action director. He is not strong on story. That was what killed BvS and MOS. And to be fair, Henry Cavill was lame in MOS. He got better in BvS. Or maybe it was the direction. His Clark and Superman were just robots. He barely had facial expressions to contribute to his performance. A lot of problems with the DCEU and WB was the chief architect of it. They should have had better script writers and not had Snyder build the universe. I feel they could have had a writer or two to carve out the plan and work it with directors who will then bring their own styles into the films. |
TonySpike:The franchise is already dead bro. Less interested in anything from it again. |
SMUAG:Then again, I don't think WB hired the right man to build a Cinematic universe. |
SMUAG:Lol. Maybe some of us are tired of superhero films and its enthusiasm. Or perhaps no longer logging in to Nairaland. For me, it's a bit of the two. Superhero stuff no longer excite me like before. I'm more into comedy, drama and romance flicks now sort of. And WB didn't help matters. For the James Gunn universe, give it a few projects before the superhero fatigue catches up to it. |
Happy New Year, guys. Long time, folks. How are we all doing? @Pu7pl3, @abduleez1, @thekingishere, @Bankygee, @raalsalghul, @thehulk616, @SMAUG, I know I am missing a lot of names, but happy new year, everyone. |
SMUAG:Lol, I may not like him but I don't hold this against him. And seriously I am not wishing his DCU to fail cause let's face it, WB are the real problem not Gunn. It's okay for him to not like something. |
SMUAG:I love this angle. I am not happy Gadot agreed to do this. But I am not opposed to her returning if that's what she wants. |
BlackManta:It's as if you don't know she's a Hollywood commodity now. You guys hate her cause of WW84 but forget she was good before then and could have played the role better with a better script. |
TheMaterialist:Superman Returns did that. But lots of people had issues with it. I get your point but listen you can't have a Superman film without having action. There has to be a balance. Superman fighting world hunger would take Nolan kind of writing to work. And I repeat, you need action in a Superman film. You don't need villains, true but you need a convincing story and spectacle. |
TheMaterialist:It won't work. They tried something like that with a Quest for peace, and it tanked. It will be boring and what villain symbolizes the theme? What works for comics might not work on TV. |
