Your blind and unfounded hatred for CR7 is clearly distorting your views. How can you say George Weah is better than CR7? Are you high on weed?

You are wrong. Try and remember the 90s era. Fact is, there were so many mega stars during that period and that was why it kept changing hands. C Ronaldo cannot even be compared to Ronaldo de Lima's left leg. He can't compare to George Weah's left thigh. Then came along Rivaldo and much later Ronaldinho. Even before the 90s, we had Marco van Basten. Check out Marco's scoring ratio (devoid of silly penalties). As far as I am concerned, Messi remains a standout; far above C Ronaldo. But he got himself caught up in a useless arms race with C Ronaldo (engineered by Real Madrid). It was Real Madrid's idea to TRY and prop up a "competitor" to Messi. I remember an interview Guardiola did back in 2010. He said "I feel sorry for those trying to claim Messi's throne".

I think we should move on. Take any reservation as a potential recommendation to consider in subsequent JSA awards.

2. the moderator should be exempted in some of the categories. I partially agree with olutola88 on this. I believe mods can participate in some of the categories as they also ordinary joblanders but just have administrative powers. But there are some categories they should have been exempted from as it is their job and they will invariably be the favourite to win. The categories are 'most online award' (They are expected to be online often) 'most popular' (Mods are popular by the nature of their job) and 'poster of the year'. I think they can participate in all other categories cos the others do not conflict with their core responsibilities.
Due respect to davide470

Jobs/VacanciesRe: ★ Job/vacancies Section Awards 2014 ★ by Mixty: 7:29am On Jan 11, 2015
Therealadonye has done a great job. Given the short notice and duration of the award process, I give him a pass mark. This is the first of its kind in this session, and it is expected that there will be a few lapses in the process. There is always room for improvements. I have identified a few flaws can be noted for subsequent editions. However, I think one of them NEED to be rectified IMMEDIATELY (My bad, I should have mentioned it earlier when the process started. These are my reservations are as follows:

1. Some of the award categories are ludicrous This is a major flaw in the award process and I think this needs to be rectified with immediate effect. Job/vacancies section is one of the most visited and important section of Nairaland. An annual award for the section should be taken with all sense of seriousness and purpose. Some of the award categories are a slight to the prestige of Job/vacancies section, and they tend to whittle down the prestige and value of the whole award programme, making it all look like a fanfare rather than a valuable, prestigious and purposeful award. These are the ridiculous ones:

a) Best thread derailer: What's the purpose of this category precisely? Are you trying to reward people who break Nairaland rules? An award should motivate people to do the right things, not to break rules.

b) Miss Dainty: This is job/vacancies section, not romance, dating, or family section. I see no reason why this category is here. It serves no purpose as the purpose of the section is not meant to attract guys or ladies (I am not against hooking up people here oh cheesy. We can meet people anywhere but I'm saying you shouldn't have an award for this category). Like I earlier, categories such as this tend to reduce or eliminate the prestige expected in an Job/vancancies award programme.

c) Mr Casanova: Read my note on Miss Dainty

d) Most handsome/most beautiful: This is also funny. When did Job/Vacancies section become an opportunity to show figure 8 and 6 packs? This total derails the purpose of the section and shouldn't have been a category at all. Dues respect to Ferdybaba and Jamean.

e) Most secretive joblander: So are we trying to award people who do not supply information? What's the purpose behind this? Let's not turn the whole award process to a big joke. I know we want to make it interesting but we shouldn't go to ludicrous extents.

f) Funniest Moniker: What has moniker got to do with your contribution to Nairaland Job/vacancies? Are you encouraging people to start using weird monikers just to win awards? People should be free to use whatever moniker they choose to. No one should should win an award for just choosing to use a particular moniker. To me, this is just a popularity award.

Personally, it is a slight to award winners for the above mentioned out-of-purpose categories while simultaneously awarding winners for more serious categories like most helpful Joblander, sense maker of the year, etc. IT IS A BIG SLIGHT TO SERIOUS WINNERS.

I personally suggest that these 6 categories should be cancelled with immediate effect. They serve no purpose. If at all they serve any purpose, they reduce the importance attached to the whole award process

To be continued....

EducationRe: OPINION: 8 Reasons Why Bsc Is Superior To HND by Mixty: 2:01pm On Jan 10, 2015
zebra:
Nigerian universities have been using their profs to churn out unskilled and unemployable graduates since 1914, while the polytechnics with their HND/Bsc/PGD and Msc lecturers have been churning out skillful, highly technical, and employable graduates. Which one is better? All stakeholders in the universities should accept this fact and think of how to resuscitate the system rather than claiming superiority when such does not exist.
cheesy Hogwash
If that's the case, why is it that there are far more job opportunities for university graduates? Why are more BSc holders getting more well-paying jobs than HND folks? Why are HND holders crying about the few job and scholarship opportunities available to them.
BSc remains superior to HND. If you don't like that, well,...I can't help your case.

Do you then think that Judges can be selected who have been influential enough in this section to know the right people to award and still have little or no stake in the process?

I think everyone who could be a judge is a Nominee.

How about we let everyone vote from a pool of those with the highest nominations in each category and take away campaigning?
I think Campaigning is where your issues lie, yes?
I'm just bouncing ideas around here.
I agree with adeaks. Having a contest will defeat the whole purpose. It's an award not a competition. It's not a popularity contest.

Best way to go around this is to either collate and announce result as it is OR create a poll for each category (in that case, no one knows who voted for who). That should only be done for categories where there are significant number of nominations for more than one candidate (like a run off election). In a case where there is overwhelming number of nomination for a particular candidate, a poll is not necessary.

My suggestion!

Nairaland GeneralAttention SEUN, Suggestion On Deactivation Of Account by Mixty(op): 12:54pm On Jan 06, 2015
Seun,

I think you should put in place a system to automatically delete inactive (dormant) accounts after 365 days of not logging in.

Several monikers have not logged in for years and their accounts remain active.

I know this adds up to the total number of members (currently 1291264) which may be relevant to you to market this website but that count is deceptive. Instead, you can have 2 data on that - 1) total number of active members 2)total number of members till date.

back your points up with facts, because i still cant fathom how all eight point relate or determine the quality of student in uni or poly. In my own view it is usually individual effort that counts.
For instance, while in camp, a lady had to copy out her details ( name, address etc) on a piece of paper so she can fill out a form, Same lady finished from one nasarawa state university.
If all that counts is individual effort, you don't need to go to school at all then. Just sit down at home and do home study.
Also, if individual effort is all that matters, why are people rushing to prestigious schools like Oxford, Cambridge, Havard, etc. Why is it that a Havard graduate is in a better position to get a good job than graduate of low class schools?
If all that counts in your effort, why didn't you choose to go to college of education then?

Some people just reason from their anus.

I wont even argue with anything you have written, but I saw a polytechnic graduate at a police station in Lagos today. She wrote a statement, and the I.P.O, who is an ordinary primary school leaving certificate holder, told her she wrote nonsense. She couldn't spell mother, couldn't spell simple english words. I was embarrassed.

Also, I have been to many polytechnics and interacted with some of them. While I agree that there are brilliant polytechnic students, I believe they make up just about 15 percent of the total population of the school.

if you assemble 20 students( uni and poly), you dont have to spend more than 5 minutes with them before you can single out the polytechnic students. From the way they dress, speak, behave. e.t.c . Anyway, just had to get that off my chest. My advice to anybody seeking admission, try to get a University Education at all cost.
Most sensible and unbiased comments. Take the OP's write-up for instance. Does it make any sense at all? Like you said, there are dull and bright students everywhere, but the higher population of dull and/or unenlightened strudents can be found in the polytechnics.

Very true analysis. 1000+ likes

OP, good job. I think we need an education / academic version of xfire's thread, which is more career oriented.

A FP worthy thread.

Jelani Aliyu of General Motors USA attended a polytechnic in Nigeria and graduated with ND after turning down admission to study Architecture in a university. Nigerian polytechnics train people to be technically sound.
