No its Yorubas that are confused..
now u saying Oba is not a title in Yoruba it just means ruler?
I'm saying its a title Yoruba kings adopted from Benin..

can you explain why Yoruba kings were not refered to as Oba till around the 20th century?

ode can u tell me one king in Yoruba that changed his title that he was using previously to the oba title u claimed they adopt cuz as far as I can see the aalafin is still called alalafin and so many more. Oba Lori ngbogbo is yoruba. Ur word for king is Ogie.

you are still confused.

any king in Yoruba land is an Oba no matter the title adopted.

Oba simply means the presiding one. it is as old as the language.

the only place where oba is specifically used as a title in Yoruba land is in Lagos. Oba of Lagos, the previous title for the king of Lagos island was Eleko of Eko. ( The owner of Eko)
oba of Lagos is English derived just like oba of Benin. His real title is eleko of Eko.

So why weren't Yoruba kings called Oba till recently? the title Oba was adopted by the Yorubas in the 20th century..
was the title otunba, oja oba, abobaku also adopted in the 20th century. Can u prove it. How can a word adopted mean something in the language but u that claimed u own the word doesn’t mean shit in ur language. Is there any word relating to oba in Benin language except the omo noba nedo.

you are the confused one here.

Oba means king.

Now kings have different titles.

you should understand now
correct one general word for king which is oba while the rest of the king have different titles. Don’t know what’s confusing about that.

Yorubas are confused.. you have many words for kings..
only one word for king which is oba. Just like ur word for king in edo is ogie. Yoruba has otunba title urs is enogie. Just accept the fact oba means nothing In ur language.

If Ilorin never had an Oba, then what was the title of the Yoruba ruler before the fulani conquest of Ilorin? or was Ilorin always Fulani?
The reason Ilorin never had an Oba title is because by the time the Yorubas adopted the Benin Oba title Ilorin was already in control of the fulanis who had introduced the emir title..
shut up ilorin doesn’t have oba title. It was a military outpost with no king under oyo empire. Ilorin has an emir but the people still refer to their king as oba cuz that’s yoruba word for king. Did the Yoruba also adopt Otunba title from Benin cuz the word has no meaning regarding leadership in Benin language. Ur word for king is ogie. Itsekiri king is ogiamen (king of the water.) while the title is olu of Warri.

Amyway too much talk

First of all there was no connection between benin and ife throughout history oba eweka 11 was the one who coined it with his name eweka

Unless you say am lieing

You can prove it to me that benin had a connection with ife in the past by citing any documents from the European arrival since 1475 till 1897

u talk too much. U said there is nothing like oba it’s just an appellation. It’s called omo noba nedo. So why do u call ur king omo noba nedo uku akpolopo then call him oba ewuare or eweka again. What does name like obaseki translates to. And am still waiting for the 30 kings that came from Benin in Yoruba land.

Nice one!

Keep giving it to thick-skulled boy.

His skull must be soft today.

I have already exposed them on that "Oba" thingy.

In the end we found that the word "Oba" does not even exist in Edo language till today.

cc: gregyboy, Edeyoung I lie?? grin
Oba is undisputed Yoruba from Nigeria to Benin to Togo. The word ba in relation to leadership is ever present. Apart from ojo oba, ojude oba. Long term title like otunba has been present in Yoruba for centuries. Yoruba names with oba attaches to them.

you are mixing history up.

Ilorin never had an Oba. it's simply an Oyo military Outpost Headed by the generalissimo Aare Afonja.

Alaafin was the supreme king.

the Fulanis took over the kingdom after Aares mutiny.

Emir is a funani titile.

Ilorin never had obas of its own.
emir is a Islamic title nothing to do with Fulani.

Oromiyan that samuel johson didnt even write that he came from ife go sit down nor be only oromiyan na orayan

You expect me to believe your myth lol

We have more than 30 kings in yoruba land who heritage are from benin tell me why the word oba wont be adopted to the yorubas lexicon

Unlike oromiyan who some authors believe never existed but was a mythical idol

In the entire Edo state show me three kings who have Yoruba ancestory

The truth is edo overlorded you guys

Oduduwa is a political canopy to escape oyo rule

So emir title in kwara is also a Yoruba title abi

Benin - ife never had connections oga go sit-down

Untill proven otherwise

tell me the name of the 30 kings in Yoruba land that are of Benin heritage cuz apart from ogoga of ikere who claimed his ancestors are from Benin no king is descendants of Benin. Meanwhile in the first place ur king is descendant of oranmiyan a Yoruba so by extension the king of ikere is also yoruba.
Dumbass emir title is not even African but Arabs and its Amir and it’s beinv used as an Islamic title in ilorin. The ilorin people still call him oba cuz that’s the Yoruba word for king. Even the market is still called oja oba.
If there is no word called oba in Benin and it’s just an appellation what does name like Obaseki and co means. Why is ur king called oba ewuare.

oh boy you don't get it.

what language do u speak.

Oba in Yoruba translates to "he who presides"

omo oba means the Scion of he who presides.

omonoba nedo.... means the prince in edo....

what does oba mean in your language. answer that.

am a linguist you know.

Obadiah or whatever you are quoting from Edom has nothing to do with this.
No linguistic correlation.

How do you even know the right pronunciation for Obadiah....
apart from oba. There is yoruba title like otunba. Even the people that get killed with the king in the Olden days of oyo are called abobaku. The only word Benin has regarding the oba is their omo noba nedo the shining one.

Sicko

Omo n'oba nedo ukwakpolopolo title

Eware11 = name

Calling just oba as the title is incorrect oba is just an abbreviations of the full name

The question should be why did the yorubas adopt the word oba to represent kingship in yoruba land was the power of power so strong among yoruba territories just like we nigerians adopted king as an English title for our king.....

You guys simply adopted the title oba into your lexicon in the early 30s
shut up and stop lying oba is yoruba word. The title otunba a very prominent title in all yoruba land means king right hand man. So tell me how yoruba copy Benin when it’s clear as day it’s the other way around. Every market in Yoruba land there is oja oba. Even the Europeans wrote about it. The truth is Benin adopted the word when oranmiyab from came to rule ur people. Cuz the word oba has no meaning regarding leadership in Benin language while it does in Yoruba.

Having said that, Ekaladerhan is the mythical personage who is not found in any history book from 1485 to 1930.
