Rewards for Justice - First Reward Offers for Terrorists in West Africa

For the first time, the U.S. Department of State's Rewards for Justice program is offering rewards for information on key leaders of terrorist organizations in West Africa: al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa (MUJWA);and the groups known as the Signed-in-Blood Battalion and Boko Haram.

The Secretary of State has authorized rewards of up to $5 million each for information leading to the location of AQIM leader Yahya Abu el Hammam and Signed-in-Blood Battalion leader Mokhtar Belmokhtar; rewards of up to $3 million each for information leading to the location of AQIM leader Malik Abou Abdelkarim and MUJWA spokesperson Oumar Ould Hamaha; and a reward of up to $7 million for information leading to the location of Abubakar Shekau, the leader of Boko Haram.

Yahya Abu el Hammam serves as a senior leader of AQIM, planning attacks and kidnappings in North and West Africa. Hammam reportedly was involved in the 2010 murder of an elderly French hostage in Niger.

Mokhtar Belmokhtar, previously a leader of AQIM, is the founder of the Signed-in-Blood Battalion, also known as the al-Mulathamun Battalion. It conducted the deadly January 2013 attack on a gas facility in In-Amenas, Algeria, where at least 37 hostages, including three U.S. citizens, were killed.

Malik Abou Abdelkarim is a senior leader within AQIM. Under his command, AQIM fighters have conducted kidnappings and terrorist attacks in North and West Africa.

Oumar Ould Hamaha, previously a member of AQIM, is now the spokesperson for MUJWA, an AQIM offshoot. As a member of AQIM, Hamaha participated in kidnappings of foreigners for ransom, including the kidnapping of a Canadian diplomat from Niamey, Niger, in December 2008.

Abubakar Shekau is the leader of Nigeria-based, Jama’atu Ahl as-Sunnah il-Da’awati wal-Jihad, more commonly known as Boko Haram. The group is responsible for the August 2011 vehicle-bomb attack on a United Nations facility in Abuja, Nigeria, which killed at least 23 people and injured 80.

Acting Lebanese Consul in Kano, Khallel Musliman, has revealed that the private residence that housed cache of weapons of mass destruction linked to international terrorist organisation, Hezbollah, belongs to a Sierra Leonean.

Speaking in Kano, Musliman said the property owner who is already in custody over his infamous role in the arm saga is Abdu Hassan Tahir.

The controversial property located at Gaya Road within Bompai GRA is within a striking distance to the police headquarters that was sacked by the dreaded Boko Haram members in January 20, 2012.

Heavily armed soldiers are still keeping vigil on the property thereby impeding access to the popular street off Milar Road in Kano metropolis.

The Lebanese consul who made available to Vanguard a copy of business permit granted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 2004 to the accused to conduct business activity in Nigeria further revealed that he is a nationalised Sierra Leonean.

The Brigade Commander, 3rd Motorized Brigade, Nigerian Army, Kano, Brigadier-General Ilyasu Abbah, had named three suspects in their custody as Abdallah Hassan Fadallah, Mustapher Fawaz and Abdullahi Tigani, adding that they have all been moved to Abuja for further investigations.

The army chief recalled that one of the suspects, Tahini, was once arrested at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport over undeclared $60,000 on his way to Lebanon, adding that he is an Abuja-based businessman.

A copy of the business permit ref number MIA/B 24332/T/403 and signed by one Alhassan M.Fawu for the Director Citizenship and Business for the Minister of Internal Affairs, Abuja, in 2004 allows the suspect to establish a business venture in Kano.

The Sierra Leonean suspect had obtained the business permit with a registered company named, Amfat Nigeria Limited, that specialized in manufacture of plastic products, general merchants, importer and exporter.

The Lebanese Consul was quick to differentiate the Sierra Leonean suspect from Taheer Fadhlala, owner of Taheer Guest Palace in Kano, adding that the clarification becomes imperative in the light of misrepresentation in some media.

River State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi who is involved in a tussle with Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, over who is the authentic Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) has offered to step down from the post if Jang would also step down. At this point it is not yet known how Amaechi would want a new Chairman to emerge, whether by consensus or via another election.

Barring all unforeseen circumstances, Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi and his Plateau State counterpart Jonah Jang may be asked to step down as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) for a consensus candidate that would reconcile both warring parties, LEADERSHIP investigations have revealed.

Although Amaechi was duly elected at the NGF meeting, where he scored 19 while Jang scored 16, Jang’s camp has faulted Amaechi’s emergence on the grounds that it had earlier adopted Jang as the consensus chairman. They claimed that the constitution of the Forum did not give room for a second term.

Amaechi has been suspended by the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for alleged anti-party activities. President Goodluck Jonathan, who claimed neutrality on the saga, has also turned round to recognise Jang.

LEADERSHIP checks show that some five governors from the north have begun a search for the way out of the cul-de-sac and the plan is to work out a modality where both Amaechi and Jang would be asked to step down for a consensus chairman from the north “in the interest of peace and unity of the Forum and of the country as well”.

A source close to one of the governors said, “We do not want to involve the press in what we are doing now; it is a shame that those who claim to be elected governors in the country are in this type of a mess, and, to worsen the situation, each camp is making use of the media, laying claim to be the chairman. If I may confide in you, the plan is to call for a meeting of NGF and ask both Amaechi and Jang to step down, and then a neutral person would be asked to be the chairman. Doing so would go a long way in bringing us back and restoring the lost credibility,” an insider told LEADERSHIP.

The source disclosed further, “Neither of the two camps would be asked to call the meeting when the time comes.” He also disclosed that whoever will be the new chairman “would emerge not through any election, but through consensus; since the existence of the Forum, there had never been a time when the chairman was elected. The one we held has proved us wrong.”

When asked which zone or state the consensus chairman would come from, the source refused to answer the question but said, “We would cross the bridge when we get there.”

But another source close to the Forum who corroborated him said “the north might be asked to produce the chairman for tactical reasons”.

Another source close to the five governors also disclosed that Governor Raji Fashola of Lagos would be persuaded to withdraw his suit since “as governors, they all have immunity, either to sue or to be sued, and that, aside, this is a voluntary association and asking the court to intervene could put an end to the Forum.”

Nigeria’s military on Thursday dismissed as “empty propaganda” claims by Boko Haram’s leader that soldiers have retreated during an ongoing offensive, insisting the campaign has heavily damaged the Islamist insurgents.

In a video obtained by AFP on Tuesday, Boko Haram chief Abubakar Shekau said soldiers have at times “turned and ran” when facing Islamist fighters and rejected military boasting about the success of the operation.

“We consider it as empty propoganda,” defence spokesman Brigadier General Chris Olukolade said of the video.

“To the best of our understanding, at the moment (the insurgents) are in disarray. They are on the run and so many of them have been captured,” he told AFP.

He declined to provide figures of those captured or killed in the operation launched on May 15 after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in three northeastern states considered Boko Haram strongholds.

Shekau’s whereabouts, which cannot be determined in the video, remain unknown.

“I don’t know his location but I know that intelligence is trailing him,” Olukolade said.

Shekau called on like-minded Islamists in countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq to join the fight to create an Islamic state in Nigeria.

Olukolade suggested the plea for foreign assistance implied weakness.

“If they are still firmly on ground why does he need help?”

The United States and analysts have voiced concern over the prospect of widespread civilian casualties during the operation, with Nigeria’s military having been accused of massive abuses in the past.

Olukolade told AFP he has seen no credible evidence of soldier misconduct in the offensive.

With the military having cut mobile phone service in much of the northeast and access to remote locations restricted, rivals claims about the conflict have been impossible to verify.

Olukolade said that air strikes used so far have primarily included covering fire for ground troops tasked with storming Boko Haram camps.

The military has claimed the destruction of several such camps, primarily in Borno state, Boko Haram’s traditional base.

Boko Haram has waged its insurgency since 2009, with an estimated 3,600 lives lost, including killings by the security forces.

The group has pushed for the creation of an Islamic state in Africa’s most populous nation and largest oil producer, though its demands have repeatedly shifted.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), on Wednesday described the declaration of a State of Emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States by President Goodluck Jonathan as a dangerous trend in the art of governance and a deliberate ploy to subvert constitutional democracy.
“It is now abundantly clear that President Jonathan has finally bared his fangs confirming what was widely speculated,” he said in a press statement, stressing that by the action, Mr. Jonathan has intimidated and emasculated the governors of these States.

Tinubu said that keen observers have been left with the unmistakable conclusion of the existence of a surreptitious but barely disguised intention to muzzle the elected governments of these states for what is clearly a display of unpardonable mediocrity and diabolic partisanship geared towards 2015.

“Borno and Yobe states have been literally under armies of occupation with the attendant excruciating hardship experienced daily by the indigenes and residents of these areas. This government now wants to use the excuse of the security challenges faced by the Governors to remove them from the states considered hostile to the 2015 PDP/Jonathan project.”

He warned that the administration is in effect setting in motion a chain of events the end of which nobody can predict, as actions such as this one often give root to radical ideologies and extremist tendencies that are a direct opposite of the intended outcome of unwarranted and unintelligent meddlesomeness.

“The present scenario playing out in the country reminds one of the classical case of a mediocre craftsman who continually blames the tools of his trade for his serial failure but refuses to look at his pitiable state with a view to adjusting,” he said.

Chief Tinubu further warned that Jonathan’s pronouncement, which seeks to abridge or has the potential of totally scuttling the constitutional functions of Governors and other elected representatives of the people, will be counterproductive in the long run.

“A State of Emergency already exists in the states where JTF operates,” he pointed out, noting that residents of the affected communities live in constant fear and their rights are violated with impunity under the guise of searching for terrorists in their respective domains.

“Hiding under some nebulous claims which border on the intractability of the security challenges posed by Boko Haram or some acclaimed traditionalists who have killed some policemen to render ineffective the constitutional powers vested in elected Governors and other representatives of the people, perceived as not amenable to manipulation for the 2015 project amounts to reducing serious issues bordering on the survival of the country to partisan politics,” he said.

The ACN chieftain called on all those who love Nigeria genuinely to advise the federal government not to tinker with the mandates of the governors of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa under any guise, calling it a “potentially destructive” path to take.

“If security of a society is about the protection of lives and property of the citizenry, the involvement of the people is a sine qua non to effective intelligence gathering,” the statement said. “Any measures put in place which alienate the people, in particular their elected representatives, should be considered as fundamentally defective by every right thinking person in the country.”

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has described the declaration of a state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States by President Goodluck Jonathan as lacking in original thinking, and therefore asked the National Assembly to reject it.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said if the use of force was capable of ending the Boko Haram crisis, it would have ended a long time ago.

It said while the President was right in expressing outrage over the mindless killings and wanton destruction by the insurgents, he was wrong in proposing more of the same measures that have failed to yield results.

”If the medicine given to a patient has not cured his or her illness, is it not futile to prescribe more of the same medicine for the patient? If the declaration of a state of emergency in 15 local government areas in four states in 2011 has not curbed the activities of the insurgents, why extend such measure to other areas? If the use of force in the affected states have failed to curtail the activities of the insurgents, why send in more troops?

”There is nothing new in the President’s action. It is more of the same: deployment of more troops to the affected states and the use of tougher, scorched-earth tactics against the insurgents. In the first instance, this stepped-up militarization of the states amounts to an asymmetric use of force in an environment where the insurgents operate within a civilian population, hence it will ultimately be counterproductive as the death toll will continue to mount while the civilian population – who will be caught in the cross fire – will be alienated.

”Secondly, the President should go ahead and disband the committee he recently inaugurated and saddled with reaching out to the insurgents, because by opting to flood the states with more troops under an ill-advised emergency rule, he has succeeded in pulling the carpet from under the Committee’s feet. Who negotiates genuinely with a gun
to his head? The committee’s job is over, the members can as well pack up and go home.

”Thirdly, one hopes the President’s action is not linked to the politics of 2015. With the three states militarized, there can neither be electioneering campaign nor voting there. We had warned earlier that as 2015 approaches, the Jonathan Administration will increasingly take measures that will make it impossible to hold election in many states The over militarization of some states in the north, the plan to destabilise the South-west using slush funds from the so-called oil pipeline protection contract and the infantile threats from some Niger Delta militants seem to be part of this plan

”Fourthly, what happens if and when the declaration of emergency rule fails to stem the violence, now that the President has gone for broke and played his last card?

”In view of the reasons stated above, we hereby reject the declaration of emergency rule in the three states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, and we call on the National Assembly to also reject it and not allow itself to be used to rubber stamp a declaration that is largely cosmetic.

”We reiterate our earlier statements that the Boko Haram crisis has its roots in years of bad governance that have produced an army of unemployed,
unemployable, disenchanted and demoralized youths who are now ready hands and willing tools for those seeking to perpetrate violence. The unprecedented corruption across the land, as well as injustice and extra-judicial killings are also fuelling this crisis,” ACN said.

The party said while the short-term solution to the Boko Haram crisis should be a combination of dialogue and a minimal use of force, the long term measure to deny Boko Haram of willing recruits and make the sect unattractive to anyone is to ensure that the State can adequately meet the yearnings and aspirations of its citizens. And the only way to do this is through good governance that delivers the dividends of democracy to the citizens; stamps out corruption and ensures a just and equitable society.

”Boko Haram is like a bad tree. To kill it, it must be uprooted, instead of trimming its branches. The measures announced by President Jonathan on Tuesday will not deliver the killer punch to this reprehensible sect. There is need to think out of the box,” it said.

In a recent interview with BellaNaija, one-time first runner-up of the Mr. Nigeria contest, Alex Ekubo, spoke candidly about himself – career, controversial relationship with Uti and future endeavours.

Excerpts:
It’s already four months into the year and a lot has been happening on the entertainment scene. What have you been up to this year?
We just finished shooting a movie called “Gold Digging”. It’s a Rukky Sanda movie and it has myself, Rukky, Yvonne Nelson, IK Ogbonna, Venita Akpofure, Denrele and Sexy Steel. Before that, I finished a movie titled “Keeping My Man” with Ramsey Nouah, Monalisa Chinda and Ini Edo.

Take me down memory lane. How did you get into the acting profession?
Acting is something I’ve always had a passion for. When I was young, producers and directors would use our house to shoot movies. Sometimes they gave me minor roles like asking me to cry in a movie. Years later, I moved to University of Calabar to study Law but I was still into the Arts. I presented a TV show and was part of the Dance Drama group. In 2010, I emerged first runner up at the Mr. Nigeria contest which gave me a good platform to launch my acting career. That was when I landed my first major movie role in ‘Ladies Men’. But before then, I was in some TV productions like ‘Secrets & Scandals’, ‘Hope Bay’ and ‘Happy Family’. I’ve also featured in ‘In The Cupboard’, ‘True Citizens’, ‘Weekend Getaway’, ‘Lovelorn’ and ‘AY’s Crib’. God has really been faithful to me. I’ve just had a lot to do here and there.

You’ve not been acting professionally for so long yet you’ve gotten some recognition such as the Most Promising Male Act for 2012 Best of Nollywood Awards. How does that make you feel?
I feel humbled. Like the Bible says, “The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong”. In this short time I’ve been around, there has been so much buzz. I don’t even know what I do, I am my biggest critic. But it’s humbling when I come out and people recognize my works. I believe God strongly and I hold Him close.

I get the feeling that you are quite religious.
I am very religious. My Mum is an Evangelist, my Dad is an Elder. If I go to hell, I will feel bad because of my religious background. I grew up in a strong, vibrant Christian home, the type where you join the choir as a kid and if you do something wrong, my Mum would say “I would report you to God”.

Do you exercise your religious belief in every aspect of your life and career?
Everything I do is about God. I am at a place where I don’t do anything without asking “God, is it OK if I do this?” I see a lot of young people who’ve had their lives cut short, people having plane crashes. I travel a lot, I am not holier or better than them but God protects me. It’s not by my power, it’s by His Grace that I exist.

I’m sure you must have studied hard to obtain a Law Degree from the University. Do you have any plans of working as a Lawyer?
My Law degree is in my freezer, chilling. As the saying goes “strike the iron when it is hot”, now that my market is selling in Nollywood and entertainment, let me be striking this iron now. Entertainment is my thing and Acting is a career on its own. When people ask me what I do, I say “I’m an Actor”. They expect me to say more, but I say “I am an Actor, that’s all.”

This is probably because they get the idea that you have a lot of free time. You are present at almost every red carpet and major event within and outside the country and people want to know why?
People get it twisted a lot. I’ve learnt to respect people for what they do and I think people should do the same too. As an entertainer, being seen and heard is part of your job description. If I say let me package myself out of the scene, I will package myself out of business. I have an obligation and a moral standing to be at such events.

Could you explain some of these obligations?
If you see me at a fashion show like ‘Music Meets Runway’, it’s because I am a model and I was invited as a guest of honour. If you see me at a comedy show like ‘AY Show’, I act in AY’s crib so I have to be there.

If I see you at Dubai for 2face Idibia’s wedding…
I didn’t go on my own. If 2face extends an arm and says “Come and support me,” I will oblige him like I did. So tomorrow, if I have an engagement and I invite him, he will also come. That is how we do in this business of entertainment, we support each other. I was on my own when they invited me to come and present an award at AMAA; they paid for my accommodation and flight ticket. At the end of the day, someone said “Alex what were you doing at AMAA?”. Hello? I am an actor! If you watch closely, I hardly attend music shows. But the ones that have to do with acting, modeling and movie premieres, I have to be there because I was invited.

You always seem to be paired up with your colleague and friend, Uti Nwachukwu at such events. Why?
Uti is my brother and my friend who has been there for me through thick and thin. What a lot of people don’t know is that we have a lot in common. He is a model, I am a model; he is an actor, I am an actor. Most times, we don’t even go together to events but I can’t see him outside and act as if I don’t know him. If people want to misconstrue it, then happy thinking to them.

Your relationship with him has been tagged a romantic one on several occasions with people insinuating that you are gay partners. How do you feel about this?
It’s hilarious! Back in the days, when you have a friend who you go out with often, it was cool, people called him your best friend. Now, when they see two guys together, people begin to have weird thoughts. You see, in this business of entertainment, what you need is someone that believes in you to grow. Uti is big, and he helped me a lot prior to now that I’m beginning to gather my momentum. He is a ‘Big Brother Africa All Stars’ Winner. You can hate him but you can’t take that away from him. A lot of these local celebrities, outside Victoria Island nobody knows them. Uti is someone who grandmothers and pepper sellers know. We were in Ghana recently and the President of Ghana saw Uti at the Airport and recognized him. You can’t hate on success.

Where do you think the rumours originated from?

I don’t care and I am not bothered. "NIGERIANS HAVE WHAT I CALL CRAB MENTALITY" . Have you seen a bunch of crabs in a bucket? When one is trying to come out, the others pull it down. If these insinuations were true, by now there should be a picture to prove it. Look at most successful Nigerian entertainers, they were either tagged gay or Illuminati which I find weird. You see some girls acting their lives away on TV and people tag them as “runs girls”. Almost every young, successful entertainer has a negative tag and it is disheartening.

The word on the streets is that you both live together. Is that true?
Yes we do. But is it anybody’s problem who I live with or who Uti lives with? We all know how expensive it is to live in a highbrow area in Lagos. If you have a friend who you are getting along with and you want to live with each other, is that anybody’s problem?

How does this rumour affect your career?
It doesn’t affect my career because to me, I am just living my life. I’ve never come out to refute anything because I don’t owe anybody any explanation. It’s my life.

Talking about refuting, you kinda took it hard on Twitter recently when in response to a Tweet “Are you truly Uti Nwachukwu’s gay partner?” you replied “Did your father truly molest you when you were a child?” Where did that come from?
Sometimes, people forget that even as celebrities, we are human. Sometimes you are in the mood or not in the mood when you reply tweets. It was just a spur of the moment thing. I had to do that so that he can also experience how it feels when people are asked that sort of question.

Let’s take our chat away from Uti now and talk about the lady in your life. Who is Alex dating?
So you people can bring her online and dissect her life and generation, abi?

Funny, but no. We just want to know her.
I like to keep my life private. The records are there, I don’t have to prove anything. The Igbos say “You can’t learn to be left handed in an old age” and the English people would say “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. I don’t need to tell everyone who I’m dating to prove anything. When the right time comes, you would know who the person is.

So there is a someone?
Right now, I am single. I am married to my career. That is my focus and I don’t want to be distracted. But I’m not blocking my heart out, I am open and if the right person comes along, fine.

Maybe we should match make you on BellaNaija. Tell me your specs. What do you want in a woman?
She has to be God fearing and intelligent. I like a beautiful woman; I mean I try small so let me have a hot girl so that we’ll give birth to a hot hot baby. Maybe we can give birth to the next Miss World.

Still on the topic of dating, let’s talk about your ‘records’. Who was your first crush?
I remember her very well. I schooled at Federal Government College Daura, Katsina state and my first crush was in school with me then. She was the most beautiful girl I had seen at that time and she was really really quiet which intrigued me. While the other girls were loud and everywhere, she was a very quiet girl.

Did you ever get into a relationship with her?
We hit it off much later and I regret that it was so late because it was when I was writing my final exams and we had only a few months together. After we graduated, we lost touch and I haven’t seen her since then.

How about your first kiss. Who did you share that with?
The same girl. I remember the magical night, we were outside one Valentine’s Day after night prep. I bought her some gifts and I kissed her very briefly. I was shy and she was shy and it was magical. Oh, I’m having goose bumps remembering this moment.

…And he was literally blushing. Away from the mushy stuff now, you talk a lot about acting but not modeling. What is happening to your modeling career?
It’s there. It’s something I’ve always loved to do but my career now is Acting. I did a Brand Ambassadorship for Chiviita Active a while ago; photo shoots for MTN and Mainstreet Bank. Plus I’m a runway model and I’ve done both local and international fashion shows.

A lot of models are into designers and fashion labels. Who would you readily put your money on – Nigerian or foreign designers?
I am passionate about Nigeria. I can only be a second citizen in another country but this is my first love. I love Nigerian designers, they are doing an amazing job. All my suits are made by Nigerian designers. I don’t have any English suits (and I have a lot of suits). I also wear Nigerian shoes.

Who designs your suits?
Taryor Gabriels. He cuts my suits like it’s a second skin. I also wear Yomi Casual, Mai Atafo, Rikaoto Couture and for T shirts I wear Thots on Tees. But my Mum is my number one designer. She has a fashion outfit called Jalex Creations.

It seems a lot of designers are very willing to put their clothes on you. How do you maintain your mannequin-like body?
I’m not a gym rat. I just eat right and drink lots of water. Personally, I think I am factory fitted like this. I don’t go out of my way to do anything extraordinary.

Lots of celebs these days complain of people hacking into their social media accounts and using it for mischief. Have you ever been impersonated on social media?
There are over 7 accounts in my name on Facebook and they are not mine! My personal page is already full with over 5,000 likes so I opened a fan page which is Alexx Ekubo. Most times, I use two X’s in my name. On Twitter I use @alexxekubo and on Instagram, Keek and Cinemagram I also use Alexx Ekubo. But recently, I’ve been getting complains of people using these fake accounts to dupe innocent people. A girl munched some chats and showed me on Twitter how someone impersonated me and collected money from her to meet me at a film school. People should please take not of this.

If there was any event you wish you could change that happened in this country, what would it be?
I wish I could change the Aluu 4 incident. It hurts me every time I remember that four innocent young men were brutally murdered in broad daylight and it was recorded and put on YouTube for the whole world to see. It hurt me that the dreams of Tekena, Ugo, Lloyd and Chidiaka was brutally cut short. It hurts me that in Nigeria today, people see an accident and the first thing they do is bring out their cameras and take pictures and videos. If warlords like Charles Taylor can be tried in a court of Law, I don’t see what these boys did that people had to beat and burn them on the streets. You don’t even treat animals like that.

You should probably run for a political office since you are so passionate about Nigeria.
I owe my life totally to God and the will of God. If a time comes and an opportunity presents itself, sure. I’d like an opportunity to serve and give back to my people. I am always an advocate of being the change you want to see in the world.

Is listening to Lil Wayne’s music the cause or a symptom of anti-intellectualism? That’s the question that has to be answered, according to a new study.

The study used data from Facebook to figure out the average SAT scores of fans of different artists. They found that if you listen to Lil Wayne, your SAT scores are the lowest (876), and those who listen to Beyonce and TI are slightly higher. They said that fans of Radiohead were in the 1200s and Beethoven fans were at 1376.

The study called Musicthatmakesyoudumb was done by Virgil Griffin, who graduated from the University of Alabama. He also did another study about books that people who read, concluding that those who read the bible have the lowest SAT scores. The highest SAT scores were from people who read the book “100 Years of Solitude.”

The study has gotten criticism from those who consider it to be racist. Many of the Lil Wayne fans are black and come from environments with low-performing schools and unfavorable economic conditions. Also, SAT scores are proven to be culturally-biased and are also a weak indicator of true intelligence.

So, maybe the study doesn’t have all that much merit to begin with. But if low SAT scores are also indicators of a lack of interest in academic achievement, then the “dumb” label might be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Lil Wayne doesn’t seem all that interested in getting people to better themselves through education, and his music reflects that.

They have chased away govt officials and civil servants from some LGAs.The sect members control most villages and openly organize public preaching in village market.

Many local governments areas in northern Borno and other parts of the state are gradually coming under the control of members of the Jama'atu Ahlis Sunnah Lid Da'awati Wal Jihad, also known as Boko Haram, Weekly Trust heard yesterday.

The Northern part of Borno shares international borders with Cameroon, Niger and Chad republics and comprises Marte, Magumeri, Mobbar, Gubio, Guzamala, Abadam, Kukawa, Kaga, Nganzai and Monguno Local Government Areas.

Few attacks take place in Damboa, Chibok, Biu and Gwoza Local Government Areas in the southern part of the state while Hawul, Bayo, Kwaya Kusar, Askira/Uba and Shani have remained relatively peaceful.

Most government officials and civil servants had fled most of these areas except Damasak. Bama and some parts of Konduga Local Government Area, both in the central part of the state, are also coming under the control of the sect members who had chased away government officials and civil servants, it was learnt.

The source alleged that the JTF, which has received over 200 new patrol hilux vans, in addition to the fuelling of its vehicles and allowances for its soldiers, have largely remained more active in central parts of the state. When contacted last night, officials of the Borno State Government referred our reporter to the Joint Military task Force (JTF). However, several attempts to speak with the spokesman of the JTF Lt Col Sagir Musa were not successful as calls placed to his mobile phone failed to go through.

The coming to Lagos of the President has been planned in his itinerary since last year.
